Children’S Engineering Identity Development Within An At-Home Engineering Program During Covid-19, Amber Simpson, Peter N. Knox Dec 2022

Children’S Engineering Identity Development Within An At-Home Engineering Program During Covid-19, Amber Simpson, Peter N. Knox

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

The culture of engineering and the culture of formal learning environments often make it difficult for individuals to develop an engineering identity. Conversely, recent research points to the home environment as an alternative setting to support disciplinespecific identity development of children, while less is known regarding the identity development of children as engineers. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the development of children’s engineering identity through the co-creation of engineering concepts and engagement with engineering design thinking and processes with family members in home environments during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted interviews with nine families—nine parents and …

Imposed Food And Its Challenges To Food Security, Zachary Tobias Dec 2022

Imposed Food And Its Challenges To Food Security, Zachary Tobias

Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) declares that food security exists when all people have access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food. This is taken to understand food security in four measures: availability, access, utilization, and stability. The focus of this paper will be on access which concerns the affordability and allocation of the food supply (Ahteensuu & Siipi, 2016). I argue that social pressures on food choice, which I call food impositions, limit one's access to sufficient and safe foods by encouraging undereating in women and unhealthily high volumes of meat consumption in men. People …

Justice And Autonomy In Islamic Bioethics, Sarah Khaleefah Dec 2022

Justice And Autonomy In Islamic Bioethics, Sarah Khaleefah

Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy

Islamic bioethics acts as a normative guide to issues in the medical and scientific fields based on the religious perspective of Islam. In this paper, I will discuss one of the principles of Western biomedical ethics using this perspective. In particular, I will demonstrate how this principle should be reformulated, by Islamic understanding, into the principle of respect for justice. The principle of respect for justice can be viewed in the same way as the principle of respect for autonomy, composed of the negative obligation to refrain from actions that destabilize justice (such as causing harm to others), and the …

A Conversion To A Flourishing-Based Ethical Egoism: Discovering Morality’S Prudential Rationality, Carson Johnston Dec 2022

A Conversion To A Flourishing-Based Ethical Egoism: Discovering Morality’S Prudential Rationality, Carson Johnston

Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy

How do we live a moral life while also living a life of value to us? A life filled with passions, interests, and relationships? This paper tackles a possible reconciliation between morality and rational prudence that ensures a moral way of life is valuable for the agent that lives it. The author is motivated to build a moral theory that is “good for” the moral agent—an individual that has a capacity to understand the moral value and impact of their actions in relation to others. It is a theory that recognizes the human tendency to follow partial, self-interested, and typically …

On The Truth Values Of Definite Descriptions: Examining The Russell-Strawson Dialectic, Ibrahim Dagher Dec 2022

On The Truth Values Of Definite Descriptions: Examining The Russell-Strawson Dialectic, Ibrahim Dagher

Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy

A well-known critique of Russell’s Theory of Descriptions, offered by P.F. Strawson, is that a central tenet of Russell’s theory, the claim that any particular utterance of a sentence with a non-referring definite description will be either true or false, is mistaken. Strawson provides a similarly well-known argument in support of this claim which at least in part rests on an analysis of such utterances as implying or presupposing, rather than asserting, parts of the logically existential proposition that Russell takes such sentences to be. For Strawson, propositions such as ‘the x is p’ instead presuppose ‘there is an x’ …

Factors Influencing Motivation To Perform Mental And Physical Tasks During The Initial Lockdown Period Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Niklas Mckone, Joel R. Martin, Italia Milani, Shantanu Sur, Sumona Mondal, Nelson Cortes, Shane V. Caswell, Ali Boolani

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 15(5): 1600-1615, 2022. Drastic changes to lifestyles have occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. An unintended consequence of stay at home orders is increased isolation and less social interaction for many people. For overall wellbeing it is important to stay both physically and mentally active; however, for many individual’s motivation may be a barrier. There are non-modifiable (e.g. sex, age, personality, infection rates in the area) and modifiable factors (e.g. physical activity, diet, sleep) that may be associated with motivation to perform physical and mental tasks. We collected data from 794 subjects using an online survey …

Organizing Digital Platforms And Customer Needs For Digital Service Innovation, Gamel O. Wiredu Dec 2022

Organizing Digital Platforms And Customer Needs For Digital Service Innovation, Gamel O. Wiredu

The African Journal of Information Systems

Digital organizations have become highly dependent on digital platforms and customer needs as key resources for digital service innovation. These resources in the competitive environment are making and shaping innovation of digital services because, though external, they remain central to digital organizations’ strategic innovation and competitiveness. Yet, how and why organizing these resources influences digital service innovation is under-explained in the literature. This paper, based on an empirical study and grounded theory methodology, addresses this limitation. It explains that digital service innovation occurs through two complementary types of organizing, namely: foundational knowledge organizing by combining digital platforms and customer needs, …

Welfare In Experimental News Markets, Andrea Albertazzi, Matteo Ploner, Federico Vaccari Dec 2022

Welfare In Experimental News Markets, Andrea Albertazzi, Matteo Ploner, Federico Vaccari

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We perform a controlled experiment to study the welfare effects of competition in a strategic communication environment. Two equally informed senders with conflicting interests can misreport information at a cost. We compare a treatment where only one sender communicates to a treatment where both senders privately communicate with a decision-maker. Data show that competition between senders does not increase the amount of information decision-makers obtain. We find evidence of under-communication, as the information transmitted is lower than what theory predicts in the most informative equilibrium. Senders are worse off under competition because their relative gains from persuasion are more than …

Mentoring Infection Preventionists: An Infection Prevention Practice Fellowship Program, Sejal Naik Dec 2022

Mentoring Infection Preventionists: An Infection Prevention Practice Fellowship Program, Sejal Naik

DNP Qualifying Manuscripts

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic created enormous demands on infection preventionists (IPs). It seriously taxed IPs and required hiring new IPs to support these demands. It is highly competitive to hire experienced IPs, and it can take up to two years for new IPs to demonstrate proficiency before pursuing their certification. A gap analysis revealed that current infection prevention (IP) programs did not provide formal training or mentoring.

Methods: The fellowship program will use the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) competency model to train and build IP competency. The APIC accelerated training program will provide training to …

Influential News And Policy-Making, Federico Vaccari Dec 2022

Influential News And Policy-Making, Federico Vaccari

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper analyzes the implications of those types of interventions that affect misreporting costs. I study a model of communication between an uninformed voter and a media outlet that knows the quality of two competing candidates. The alternatives available to the voter are endogenously championed by the two candidates. I show that higher costs may lead to more misreporting and persuasion, whereas low costs result in full revelation. Yet, interventions that increase misreporting costs never directly harm the voter, but those that do so slightly can be wasteful of public resources. Regulation produced by politicians leads to suboptimal interventions.

The Spectral Features And Detectability Of Small, Cyclic Silicon Carbide Clusters, Christopher M. Sehring, C. Zachary Palmer, Brent R. Westbrook, Ryan C. Fortenberry Dec 2022

The Spectral Features And Detectability Of Small, Cyclic Silicon Carbide Clusters, Christopher M. Sehring, C. Zachary Palmer, Brent R. Westbrook, Ryan C. Fortenberry

Faculty and Student Publications

Rovibrational spectral data for several tetra-atomic silicon carbide clusters (TASCCs) are computed in this work using a CCSD(T)-F12b/cc-pCVTZ-F12 quartic force field. Accurate theoretical spectroscopic data may facilitate the observation of TASCCs in the interstellar medium which may lead to a more complete understanding of how the smallest silicon carbide (SiC) solids are formed. Such processes are essential for understanding SiC dust grain formation. Due to SiC dust prevalence in the interstellar medium, this may also shed light on subsequent planetary formation. Rhomboidal Si2C2 is shown here to have a notably intense (247 km mol−1) anharmonic vibrational frequency at 988.1 cm−1 …

Towards High-Rate Thermoplastic Composites, Chris Croshaw

Dissertations

This dissertation attempts to identify and address the problems associated with high-rate thermoplastic composites. Herein, three primary research thrusts were investigated; the first two chapters focus on the melt-state degradation mechanism of PEKK copolymers and its role on downstream crystallization and thermomechanical properties, the third chapter examines the role of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) on the crystallization and melting behavior of PEKK 70/30, and the final chapter focused on radio frequency and induction heating of PEKK nanocomposites.

The melt-state degradation mechanism was identified using a combination of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), molecular dynamics (MD), and quantum mechanics (QM) simulations. Melt-state degradation …
