Rocketry As Testing Platforms For Payloads, Pedro Llanos, Sathya Gangadharan
Faculty Research Projects
Design, assemble and launch small rockets as testing platforms to test small payloads which are flown aboard suborbital flight vehicles. We have successfully launched Level 1, Level 2 rockets, and we are in the process of finalizing the Level 3 rocket.
Practical experience for students in rockets and payloads is very valuable in the space industry, and it is something that would give them an advantage over other applicants. Students in Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Payload and Integration class were given the opportunity to build Level 1 and Level 2 rockets and gain experience developing, testing, and integrating payloads into a …

Faculty Research Projects
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Carthage College proposed a technology demonstration that has several advantages over passive slosh control. Relative to slosh baffles, the proposed MAPMD technology has a lower total mass, a much higher degree of surface wave suppression, and less volumetric intrusion into the tank. The MAPMD concept also is optimized for cylindrical tanks (unlike elastomeric diaphragms, which work only in spherical pressure vessels), and currently requires no structural design changes to existing cylindrical propellant tanks.
The objective of the current research project under PI Kevin Crosby (Carthage College and University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio) …

Faculty Research Projects
The following studies were conducted with Co-PIs Dr. Sathya Gangadharan (ERAU) and Kristina Andrijauskaite (University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio [UTHSCSA]).
MESSI Summary: This project was ERAU's second suborbital payload aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard launched May 2, 2019. We analyzed the effects of suborbital flight stressors and various light conditions (red, white, no light) on the Arthrospira platensis, commonly known as Spirulina, aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard launch vehicle. Commercially available cyanobacterium species were cultivated and closely monitored in mother colonies several months before the flight. The aim was to estimate biomass production and growth as …

Worldwide Distribution Of Cave-Dwelling Chelodesmidae (Diplopoda, Polydesmida), Rodrigo Salvador Bouzan, Jackson C. Means, Kaloyan Ivanov, Rodrigo L. Ferreira, Antonio Domingos Brescovit, Luiz Felipe Moretti Iniesta
International Journal of Speleology
Chelodesmidae is one of the most species rich families within the Myriapoda. However, little is known regarding their association with caves. We provide a list of all Chelodesmidae taxa reported from caves, map their worldwide distribution, and discuss the troglomorphic features of the group. A total of 25 species and subspecies from 20 genera and 2 subfamilies have been recorded from 59 caves and cave systems in 11 countries. These numbers represent a surprisingly modest proportion (~3%) of the approximately 800 described species in the family. Records of cave-dwelling chelodesmids appear to be geographically biased with most taxa reported from …

Criminal Law Policy In The Field Of Fishery Based On Indonesia’S International Obligation, Marimin Marimin, Lazarus Tri Setyawan, Rb Sularto
Indonesian Journal of International Law
The Indonesian Fisheries Law has determined criminal threats for perpetrators of illegal fishing in the ZEEI. In practice, there are differences in the application of imprisonment instead of fines for Indonesian citizens and foreign nationals who do illegal fishing. Such differences create injustice for Indonesian citizens. The results of the study indicate that criminal law policies in the field of fisheries need to be based on justice, in the sense of equality before the law. Foreign nationals who catch illegal fishing in the ZEEI are subject to imprisonment instead of a fine, while foreign nationals are not. Therefore, the Fisheries …

Simulated Problem-Based Learning: Teaching International Law In Exciting Way, Nik Nor Suhaida Ali
Indonesian Journal of International Law
This research aimed to discuss the methods for teaching International Law to non-law students. The subject was offered to second and third-year students of the International Affairs Management program at the School of International Studies, Universiti Utara Malaysia. Since the subject required higher-order thinking skills, it was introduced with Simulated Problem-Based Learning (SPBL), which combines role-playing simulation and problem-based learning (PBL). In western universities, simulations, PBL, and role-playing were popular methods in teaching International Law and International Relations. The methods were shown to improve learning skills but were rarely used in teaching International Law in International Relations programs in Malaysia. …
The Pedagogical Reformulation Of International Human Rights Law Education In Asia: Where Tradition Meets Innovation, Si Chen
Indonesian Journal of International Law
This article explores the feasibility, challenges, and directions for pedagogical reformulation to make international human rights law compelling for Asian law students. Pedagogies are crucial for improving students’ learning effectiveness, achieving the goal of legal education, and supporting students in their career plans. The article underlines that traditional lecture-based pedagogy is insufficient to prepare law students for human rights-related international professional careers. This article argues that pedagogies in international human rights law education need to be reformulated for a better future for legal education in Asia. It builds on three sets of sources concerning teaching, researching, and practicing international law …

The Influence Of Incorporating Modern Technologies Into The Legal Curriculum As Effective Teaching Approach In Higher Education, Tripti Bhushan
The Influence Of Incorporating Modern Technologies Into The Legal Curriculum As Effective Teaching Approach In Higher Education, Tripti Bhushan
Indonesian Journal of International Law
Higher education has seen a tremendous increase in the use of technology in teaching and learning. In this context, technology would play an important part in the law school curriculum inside and outside the classroom. This would allow students to explore various aspects of the legal world beyond the classroom, and the integration provides law schools with a potent weapon. Therefore, this research focused on using technology in teaching and learning, which would significantly aid in addressing law students’ learning requirements. By examining successful technology, it uncovered the gaps between the usage and understanding of International Law. The curriculum offered …

Understanding The Failure Of Police Reform In Nigeria: A Case For Legal History Through Literature, Olaoluwa Folasade Oni
Understanding The Failure Of Police Reform In Nigeria: A Case For Legal History Through Literature, Olaoluwa Folasade Oni
LLM Theses
On the 21st of October 2020, the world woke to images and video clips of the bloodied, broken bodies of Nigerians shared across social and traditional media. The night before, young Nigerians protesting police brutality were met with a government-sanctioned, combined police and military onslaught; Nigerias decades-long struggle with police dysfunction was brought to a head with the massacre of its citizens at the Lekki toll gate on the evening of October 20, 2020. This work problematizes the cycle of attempts at, and ultimate failure of, police reform in Nigeria. I argue that the colonial nature of policing is retained …

Hate-Clipper: Multimodal Hateful Meme Classification Based On Cross-Modal Interaction Of Clip Features, Gokul Karthik Kumar, Karthik Nandakumar

Hateful memes are a growing menace on social media. While the image and its corresponding text in a meme are related, they do not necessarily convey the same meaning when viewed individually. Hence, detecting hateful memes requires careful consideration of both visual and textual information. Multimodal pretraining can be beneficial for this task because it effectively captures the relationship between the image and the text by representing them in a similar feature space. Furthermore, it is essential to model the interactions between the image and text features through intermediate fusion. Most existing methods either employ multimodal pre-training or intermediate fusion, …

Yeutter Institute International Trade Policy Review
The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) recently released its report on the distributional effects of trade and trade policy on U.S. workers and “underrepresented and underserved communities.” The report catalogs a host of information gathered from a literature review and several roundtables on the adverse effects of U.S. manufacturing imports. But the report’s laser focus on manufacturing imports leaves a huge gap for readers interested in the distributional effects of trade.
Manufacturing imports are an important part of trade, but they aren’t all of trade. Trade is imports and exports, goods and services, inputs and final goods. Trade is manufacturing, …

Herein we report the first molecular assessment of intra-species genetic variation and interrelationships within the Rio Grande Chirping frog, Eleutherodactylus campi. We analyzed 548 base pairs of 16S rRNA gene for 71 ingroup individuals belonging to the genus Eleutherodactylus (including 42 E. campi sampled from 15 localities in the United States and Mexico) and four outgroup samples. By unveiling two highly divergent and geographically structured clades within E. campi this study provides a novel phylogenetic placement of E. campi populations north and south of the Rio Grande Valley as sister groups to each other. The observed level of genetic …
