Scamazon?: Antitrust Concerns In An Incorporated E-Commerce Marketplace, Aidan Macsweeney
Honors Projects in Accounting
The purpose of this Honors Thesis is to develop an understanding of how Amazon Inc. operates and competes in its own e-commerce marketplace. The paper seeks to answer the research question: Is the relationship between Amazon seller type and list price consistent with regulator antitrust concerns? The goal is to analyze Amazon listings in 27 product categories and how their price/sales effects vary by seller type: Amazon, Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA), and Fulfilled by Merchant (FBM). Special attention will be given to identifying price trends by category, the impact of the "Buy Box", and competing offers on the same listings. …

No. 04: Pandemic Precarity And Food Insecurity: Zimbabwean Migrants In South Africa During Covid-19, Godfrey Tawodzera, Jonathan Crush
Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network
A notable silence in the emerging literature on migrant precarity is any consideration of the relationship between precarity and food insecurity. The links between migrant precarity and sudden economic, political or environmental shocks are relatively untheorized. Researchers were thus conceptually under-prepared to understand how and in what ways the COVID-19 pandemic intersected with general forms of precarity and food insecurity. More recently, the concept of pandemic precarity has been proposed as a corrective. At its most basic, pandemic precarity refers to the increased incidence and severity of pre-pandemic conditions of poverty, inequality and economic insecurity during COVID-19. In relation to …

Faculty Research 2022
Peroxisome Biogenesis Disorders (PBD) and Zellweger syndrome spectrum disorders (ZSD) are rare genetic multisystem disorders that include hearing impairment and are associated with defects in peroxisome assembly, function, or both. Mutations in 13 peroxin (PEX) genes have been found to cause PBD-ZSD with ~70% of patients harboring mutations in PEX1. Limited research has focused on the impact of peroxisomal disorders on auditory function. As sensory hair cells are particularly vulnerable to metabolic changes, we hypothesize that mutations in PEX1 lead to oxidative stress affecting hair cells of the inner ear, subsequently resulting in hair cell degeneration and hearing loss. Global …

Western Libraries Publications
Universities are attempting to ensure that all of their research is publicly accessible because of funding mandates. Many universities have established campus open access (OA) repositories but are struggling with how to upload millions of manuscripts under numerous license agreements while also linking metadata to make them discoverable. To do this manually requires around 15 minutes per manuscript from an experienced librarian. The time and cost to do this campus-wide is prohibitive. To radically reduce the time and costs of this process and to harvest all past work, this article reports on the development and testing of a free and …

Vimentin intermediate !laments form part of the cytoskeleton
of mesenchymal cells, but under pathological conditions often
associatedwith in"ammation, vimentin !laments depolymerize as
the result of phosphorylation or citrullination, and vimentin
oligomers are secreted or released into the extracellular environment.
In the extracellular space, vimentin can bind surfaces of cells
and the extracellular matrix, and the interaction between extracellular
vimentin and cells can trigger changes in cellular functions,
such as activation of !broblasts to a !brotic phenotype. The
mechanism by which extracellular vimentin binds external cell
membranes and whether vimentin alone can act as an adhesive
anchor for cells is largely …

Same As It Ever Was: An Exploration And Demonstration Of Techniques For Repurposing And Modernizing Advanced Musical Vocabulary In Mainstream Commercial Music, Aidan Scrivens
Composition/Recording Projects
In the market for tertiary level commercial music education, educators find themselves pulled between students' commercial stylistic interests and the seemingly incommensurable genres better suited to exploring advanced theoretical concepts and vocabulary. This divide can lead to a motivational deficiency in a student that, in turn, can hinder their development and render their collegiate experience less worth the expense. In the interest of combating this potential motivational deficiency, this recording project and accompanying paper explores and demonstrates the process of modernizing and recontextualizing material found in these less commercially mainstream genres. By adapting vocabulary and approaches learned from the transcription …

While autonomous vehicles accounted for about 31.4 million vehicles on the road in 2019 (Placek). They have continued to flood the market and have a projected growth to 58 million in just 8 years from now (Placek) As well as a market cap in the billions of dollars. Even the comparatively new AV company Tesla has over 3 times the market cap value of the leading non AV brand Toyota (Market Cap) who are also working toward AVs as well, like their level 2 teammate driver assistance. Following Moore’s Law, as technology continues to improve, their social impact and ethical …

Investigating Privacy Policies Using Policylint Tool, Tricia Camaya
Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase
Organizations essentially inform clients about data collection and sharing practices through privacy policies. Recent research has proposed tools to help users better comprehend these lengthy and intricate legal documents that summarize collection and sharing. However, these instruments have a significant flaw. They overlook the possibility of contradictions within a particular policy. This paper introduces PolicyLint, a tool for analyzing privacy policies that simultaneously considers negation and varying semantic levels of data objects and entities. PolicyLint accomplishes this by using sentence-level natural language processing to automatically create ontologies from a large corpus of privacy policies and capturing both positive and negative …

Ethical Concerns In Self-Driving Cars, Victoria Shand
Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase
Automobiles have been in existence since 1672 and only went up from there. Self-driving cars are a fantastic piece of technology; they can self-park, laser ranger finder, and near vision; they can map the road in advance, understand road signs, and, in some cases, handle certain variables on the road.
When talking about any form of technology, the possibilities are endless technology is a continuously evolving idea. When discussing self-driving cars, they have some fantastic and encouraging benefits and ideas. Some ideas would be that vehicles could communicate with each other, we could eliminate the need for traffic lights, and …

Comparative Intellectual Property Protection For Marijuana: United States Vs. The European Union, Jillian Gosser
Comparative Intellectual Property Protection For Marijuana: United States Vs. The European Union, Jillian Gosser
Global Business Law Review
Protecting intellectual property relating to marijuana is a complicated endeavor. The federal ban on marijuana renders trademark protection difficult at best, and patent protection, while available, still rife with complications. In Europe, the laws pose similar challenges in the protection and enforcement of marijuana related intellectual property. This Note presents a comparative law analysis of the various ways marijuana related intellectual property may be protected in the United States and Europe. Different types of intellectual property protection explored include utility patents, design patents, trademarks, plant patents, Plant Variety Protection Act coverage, and Community Plant Variety Act coverage. This Note explores …
Who’S The Fairest Of Them All: Circuit Split Over Landlord Liability For Tenant-On-Tenant Discrimination Under The Fair Housing Act, Kelli Conway
Brooklyn Law Review
This note explores a circuit split between the Second and Seventh Circuits regarding whether landlords and property owners can be held liable for postacquisition, tenant-on-tenant discrimination. This issue is one of first impression in recent years, resulting in divergent holdings. To address conflicting judicial approaches to an increasingly prevalent civil claim, this note argues for the necessity of a Congressional amendment to the Fair Housing Act (FHA), the law which generally governs housing discrimination. Specifically, the proposed amendment would recognize postacquisition discrimination as an actionable claim and append a test to the FHA for postacquisition liability as employed by the …
Social Media And The Common Law, Leslie Y. Garfield Tenzer
Social Media And The Common Law, Leslie Y. Garfield Tenzer
Brooklyn Law Review
The framers of the United States Constitution and those who developed the early common law were no strangers to printed media. They could not, however, have anticipated the widespread ability of average people to communicate instantaneously with large audiences via platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Despite this new technology, courts have primarily relied on pre-social media precedent, rules of law, and the Constitution for guidance when confronted with civil and criminal social media misconduct. On the one hand, relying on existing law is a good thing; it reaffirms the judiciary's commitment to precedent and stare decisis. On the other …
Regulating The Autonomous Ocean, Annie Brett
Regulating The Autonomous Ocean, Annie Brett
Brooklyn Law Review
The rapid rise in aerial drone use and the future deployment of self-driving cars have both spurred extensive legal and social debate. Autonomous vessels on the ocean, on the other hand, have largely escaped detailed scrutiny, even as they are reshaping the landscape of human interactions with the ocean and creating novel challenges for national and international legal regimes. Autonomous vessels are being captured while spying on other countries, raising concerns about national security and surveillance regimes. The Coast Guard is using enforcement loopholes to justify abandoning many of their autonomous vessels at sea, in flagrant violation of national and …
