Physical activity is the fountain of youth, strengthening both the physical body as well as the mind, leading to better emotional stability and a general sense of well-being. The population over age 65 is nearing retirement age and are transitioning from a high paced work and family life to a slower and less active “empty nest” lifestyle. Among adults over age 65, will implementing an exercise program for 30 minutes per day increase mental well-being? The benefits of physical activity will be supported by gathering a group of older adults ages 65 and up from a local retirement community to …

Native American Boarding School Bands And Their Bandmasters: Project File 1: General Topics, Peter M. Lefferts

Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications

To establish a context for the Native American boarding school bands, we start with an important generalization. In the great Victorian era of bands, most were amateur, adult, white, male, community- or workplace-based recreational ensembles. With few exceptions, bands in the 19th century were not ensembles of children or women or family members, and they did not have a home in public primary or secondary schools. With roots in the military band tradition, civilian bands were mostly social organizations for adult males---grown men---"discoursing sweet music" as a kind of fraternal club with voluntary civic functions. Adult amateur men’s bands peppered …

PRC-Affiliated Research

The effects of film cooling hole placement location along the upper pressure side of a transonic squealer are considered. The thermal performance of four different film cooling configurations; B1, B2, B3 and B4, are considered using the University of Alabama in Huntsville's SS/TS/WT (supersonic/transonic/wind tunnel) experimental facility and a simulated turbine blade row using a linear cascade. Surface-varying results are provided for both the squealer blade tip surface, and for the upper pressure side of the squealer blade. These results are given for blowing ratios ranging from 0.42 to 3.20 in the form of spatially-resolved and spatially-averaged adiabatic film cooling …

Socio‑Economic Inequalities In Minimum Dietary Diversity Among Bangladeshi Children Aged 6–23 Months: A Decomposition Analysis, Satyajit Kundu, Pranta Das, Ashfikur Rahman, Hasan Al Banna, Kaniz Fatema, Akhtarul Islam, Shobhit Srivastava, T. Muhammad, Rakhi Dey, Ahmed Hossain

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

This study aimed to measure the socio-economic inequalities in having minimum dietary diversity (MDD) among Bangladeshi children aged 6–23 months as well as to determine the factors that potentially contribute to the inequity. The Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS) 2017–2018 data were used in this study. A sample of 2405 (weighted) children aged 6–23 months was included. The overall weighted prevalence of MDD was 37.47%. The concentration index (CIX) value for inequalities in MDD due to wealth status was positive and the concentration curve lay below the line of equality (CIX: 0.1211, p < 0.001), where 49.47% inequality was contributed by wealth status, 25.06% contributed by the education level of mother, and 20.41% contributed by the number of ante-natal care (ANC) visits. Similarly, the CIX value due to the education level of mothers was also positive and the concentration curve lay below the line of equality (CIX: 0.1341, p < 0.001), where 52.68% inequality was contributed by the education level of mother, 18.07% contributed by wealth status, and 14.69% contributed by the number of ANC visits. MDD was higher among higher socioeconomic status (SES) groups. Appropriate intervention design should prioritize minimizing socioeconomic inequities in MDD, especially targeting the contributing factors of these inequities.

Regional Anesthesia Techniques For Total Knee Arthroplasty: Reducing Post-Operative Complications And Improving Rehabilitation And Recovery, Miguel Castaneda, Curt Stilp, Julianna Castaneda, Justin Gambini

Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc)

Purpose

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is one of the most commonly performed procedures in the developed world, with several hundred thousand performed yearly in the United States alone.1 Majority of the patients will experience severe post-operation pain following TKA, limiting early mobilization and slowing the rehabilitation process. 2 Femoral nerve blocks (FNB) are often used for TKA analgesia, but cause a decrease in quadricep strength, increasing the risk of postoperative falls as well as limiting early post-operative mobilization.2 Other nerve blocks, such as femoral triangle block and adductor canal block are thought to preserve quadricep strength aiding in quicker recovery …

Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc)

INTRODUCTION

The prevalence of heart failure (HF) in the United States has been increasing for years. Many individuals, especially our older population, are ending up hospitalized, causing financial burden and worsened quality of life for our patients. HF is one of the leading causes of hospitalization and death in older adults in the United States.¹ Nearly one million patients are hospitalized due to HF every year and of those, many will be readmitted within a month of discharge.⁵ The American College of Cardiology Foundation/American Heart Association (ACCF/AHA) and Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA) guidelines define HF as “a complex …

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Seasonal snow melt dominates the hydrologic budget across a large portion of the globe. Snow accumulation and melt vary over a broad range of spatial scales, preventing accurate extrapolation of sparse in situ observations to watershed scales. The lidar onboard the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation, Satellite (ICESat-2) was designed for precise mapping of ice sheets and sea ice, and here we assess the feasibility of snow depth-mapping using ICESat-2 data in more complex and rugged mountain landscapes. We explore the utility of ATL08 Land and Vegetation Height and ATL06 Land Ice Height differencing from reference elevation datasets in two …

The Sunflower Movement Of 2014: How Commitment To Democratization Drives Activism In Taiwan, Katherine Ann Wagner

Washington Semester Program

Using the Sunflower Movement of 2014 as a case study, this research paper will seek to answer the question: “what is the primary motivator for political activism in Taiwan in the 21st century?” This paper draws on existing research, historical events, and interviews to examine 1) what causes people to mobilize a social movement or a protest, and 2) how attachment to democratic values is an important explanation for the onset of activism. The approach this paper takes is that ongoing commitment to democratization is the primary driver of activism, and that this particular movement is the latest iteration in …

Earnings Management: Are Men From Mars And Women From Venus?, Sonal Kumar, Rahul Ravi

Finance Department Faculty Journal Articles

Research on gender and finance finds that women chief executive officers (CEOs) are relatively risk-averse and more ethical than their male counterparts. These differences are often presented as reasons for lower earnings management by firms led by women. A strand of contrasting literature however finds the notions of women being risk-averse and ethical not necessarily true for women occupying top leadership positions as women successful in shattering the glass ceiling adopt behaviors like men. This study attempts to understand the differences between the ethical tendencies of the two genders by examining if CEO power impacts the relation between CEO gender …

Parents are often regarded as one of the significant social agents who are important to the participation of physical activity (PA) among children and adolescents. However, within the literature, the relationships between parental influences and child and adolescent PA have been inconclusive and discordant. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to quantify and synthesize the associations between parental social influences (positive parental influence, punishment, and discouragement) and the PA level of children and adolescents. Through a systematic literature search using PsycINFO, Web of Science, PubMed, ProQuest, and SPORTDiscus databases, we identified 112 eligible studies and subsequently extracted 741 effect sizes …

Experiential Learning: Museum Education And Social Studies Instruction, Megan Tims Dec 2022

Experiential Learning: Museum Education And Social Studies Instruction, Megan Tims

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

The process of education in the United States has been focused on the product of instruction rather than the process of instruction. Social studies instruction is typically associated with students memorizing dates, titles, and individuals. Research into various learning styles shows that some students are left behind with this method of instruction. By implementing experiential learning into the social studies curriculum, teachers can better reach all students. Social studies is a prime content area to introduce experiential learning because of the importance of contextual understanding and empathetic perspectives. Material culture is an apt addition to experiential learning that can be …
