Research On Iterative Calculation And Optimization Methods Of Aero-Engine On-Board Model, Xinghua Luo, Jia Geng, Ming Li, Bei Liu, Lei Wang, Zhiping Song

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Aeroengine is a complex and time-varying multivariable thermophysical system. The research on the convergence accuracy and rate of the component-level model is of great significance to the model-based engine health management, performance and fault-tolerant control. The existing engine component-level models are generally based on the traditional quasi-Newton method to solve the equilibrium equations simultaneously. Compared with the traditional Newton-Raphson method (N-R method), the convergence speed is optimized, but it is difficult to meet accuracy and real-time requirements of the dynamic model airborne applications within the full envelope. An adaptive variable step factor quasi-Newton method is proposed, which can reduce …

Reliability Parameter Optimization Complex System Simulation Based On R-Vikor Method, Zhiguang Wang, Baiting Liu, Xiaolei Wang, Tao Liu, Zhaowei Yang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: The operation of complex simulation system is not isolated, and always affected by multiple external factors and its own performance. In simulation reliability calculation, parameters need to be chosen, and different performance indexes need to be taken into account when comparing with the reference model. The research is transformed into the multi-attribute decision. An system simulation trusted parameter optimization method based on R-VIKOR(resist rank reversal of visekriterijumska optimizacija | kompromisno resenje) is proposed. Multiple sets of aerodynamic parameters of the new model are obtained through model migration theory, and similarity calculation is carried out with the optimal parameters of …

Environmental cues and internal states such as mood, reward, or aversion directly influence feeding behaviors beyond homeostatic necessity. The hypothalamus has been extensively investigated for its role in homeostatic feeding. However, many of the neural circuits that drive more complex, non-homeostatic feeding that integrate valence and sensory cues (such as taste and smell) remain unknown. Here, we describe a basal forebrain (BF)-to-lateral habenula (LHb) circuit that directly modulates non-homeostatic feeding behavior. Using viral-mediated circuit mapping, we identified a population of glutamatergic neurons within the BF that project to the LHb, which responds to diverse sensory cues, including aversive and food-related …

Cell-cell communications are vital for biological signalling and play important roles in complex diseases. Recent advances in single-cell spatial transcriptomics (SCST) technologies allow examining the spatial cell communication landscapes and hold the promise for disentangling the complex ligand-receptor (L-R) interactions across cells. However, due to frequent dropout events and noisy signals in SCST data, it is challenging and lack of effective and tailored methods to accurately infer cellular communications. Herein, to decipher the cell-to-cell communications from SCST profiles, we propose a novel adaptive graph model with attention mechanisms named spaCI. spaCI incorporates both spatial locations and gene expression profiles of …

Physical Model Of Cilia Motion, Toby Utterback

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

The motion of cilia could be further understood by creating and analysing a large scale model with similar stiffness and property values. Varying amounts of vibrating HEXBUG robots, representing motion and active particles, were placed in series with different segment lengths connecting them. The oscillating motion of a ciliium was able to be replicated and analyzed using autotracing and autotracking programs. The amplitude of the model increased with increasing length, while increasing length had an inconclusive effect on period. Furthermore, the visual path of a marked end segment repeated with each oscillation recorded.

MANTER: Journal of Parasite Biodiversity

One Health programs and trajectories are now the apparent standard for exploring the occurrence and distribution of emerging pathogens and disease. By definition, One Health has been characterized as a broadly inclusive, collaborative, and transdisciplinary approach with connectivity across local to global scales, which integrates the medical and veterinary community to recognize health outcomes emerging at the environmental nexus for people, animals, plants, and their shared landscapes. One Health has been an incomplete model, conceptually and operationally, focused on reactive and response-based foundations, to limit the impact of emerging pathogens and emerging infectious diseases and, as such, lacks a powerful …

Living Tree Doctrines Of The Canadian Constitution And Indigenous Law, Emma C. Howes Dec 2022

Living Tree Doctrines Of The Canadian Constitution And Indigenous Law, Emma C. Howes

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

The living tree doctrine of the Canadian Constitution uses the metaphor of a tree to present the Constitution as a dynamic organism which can evolve over time to accommodate new influences. This essay examines the history of this doctrine along with its possible Indigenous counterparts. In this examination, both the arboreal imagery of such doctrines and their dynamic approach to law are considered. The essay explores the benefits and disadvantages of employing a living tree approach to accommodate Indigenous legal traditions within the Canadian formal legal system.

Gatekeeping Admissions: Access To Justice And Inclusive Admissions Processes, Sarah Kriekle Dec 2022

Gatekeeping Admissions: Access To Justice And Inclusive Admissions Processes, Sarah Kriekle

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Law schools are the gatekeepers to the legal profession, and there are multiple social barriers that impact access to a legal education across a proportionally diverse range of people. This article will first rely on existing literature to demonstrate why diversity in the legal profession is an access to justice issue and to illustrate the current homogeneity that exists within the profession. This article will then argue that two primary factors prevent law schools from attracting a more diverse student body. The first factor is the over-reliance on numerical statistics like grade point average (GPA) and Law School Admissions Test …

Mental Age V Chronological Age: Rethinking Our Approach To Criminal Responsibility For Developmentally Delayed Young Persons Under The Youth Criminal Justice Act, Michael Michel Dec 2022

Mental Age V Chronological Age: Rethinking Our Approach To Criminal Responsibility For Developmentally Delayed Young Persons Under The Youth Criminal Justice Act, Michael Michel

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

The Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) is meant to ensure that only the most serious cases warrant imprisonment. Both in the pre- and post-trial stages of a criminal proceeding, the YCJA contains safeguards designed to divert youth away from correctional institutions and encourage the use of community-based services. Yet, for youth suffering from mental disorders or injuries that cause significant cognitive impairment, these safeguards can be inadequate, detrimental, or simply unavailable. To resolve this shortcoming, this article advocates using mental age, rather than chronological age, as the benchmark for determining criminal responsibility under the YCJA.

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

As a crucial food crop, potatoes are highly consumed worldwide, while they are also susceptible to being infected by diverse diseases. Early detection and diagnosis can prevent the epidemic of plant diseases and raise crop yields. To this end, this study proposed a weakly-supervised learning approach for the identification of potato plant diseases. The foundation network was applied with the lightweight MobileNet V2, and to enhance the learning ability for minute lesion features, we modified the existing MobileNet-V2 architecture using the fine-tuning approach conducted by transfer learning. Then, the atrous convolution along with the SPP module was embedded into the …

The U.S. Supreme Court And Democratic Backsliding, Thomas Keck Dec 2022

The U.S. Supreme Court And Democratic Backsliding, Thomas Keck

Political Science - All Scholarship

This paper assesses the performance of the Supreme Court as democratic guardrail during five prior periods of democratic crisis in the United States. It finds that most such periods witnessed efforts by the governing regime to entrench themselves in power, and that the Court has rarely provided an effective check on such democratic abuses. Rather than serving as a reliable democratic guardrail, the Court has regularly exercised what Dixon and Landau call “weak-form abusive judicial review”; that is, it has declined to check attacks on democracy emerging from other centers of power. On one occasion, the Court has undermined democracy …

Creating And Sustaining Democratic Spaces In Education, Joanna Haynes, Judith Suissa Dec 2022

Creating And Sustaining Democratic Spaces In Education, Joanna Haynes, Judith Suissa

Plymouth Institute of Education

This article explores the context for the accompanying suite of papers on creating and sustaining democratic spaces in education. Prompted by the centenary of Summerhill, the internationally famous democratic school founded in Suffolk, England, in 1921, by A.S. Neill, this collection of papers explores and broadens out the central questions at the heart of experiments in democratic education. We suggest that, at a time of distrust in and questioning of the central institutions of democratic government, and in the wake of challenges to the mainstream system of state schooling, these questions are more relevant than ever. We argue that detailed …

Prenatal alcohol exposure can cause developmental abnormalities (fetal alcohol spectrum disorders; FASD), including small eyes, face and brain, and neurobehavioral deficits. These cannot be detected early in pregnancy with available imaging techniques. Early diagnosis could facilitate development of therapeutic interventions. Banked human fetal brains and eyes at 9−22 weeks’ gestation were paired with maternal blood samples, analyzed for morphometry, protein, and RNA expression, and apoptotic signaling. Alcohol (EtOH)-exposed (maternal self-report) fetuses were compared with unexposed controls matched for fetal age, sex, and maternal race. Fetal brain-derived exosomes (FB-E) were isolated from maternal blood and analyzed for protein, RNA, and apoptotic …

Dissecting The Recruitment And Self-Organization Of Αsma-Positive Fibroblasts In The Foreign Body Response, Maria Parlani, Matthew L Bedell, Antonios G Mikos, Peter Friedl, Eleonora Dondossola

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The foreign body response (FBR) is a clinically relevant issue that can cause malfunction of implanted medical devices by fibrotic encapsulation. Whereas inflammatory aspects of the FBR have been established, underlying fibroblast-dependent mechanisms remain unclear. We here combine multiphoton microscopy with ad hoc reporter mice expressing α-smooth muscle actin (αSMA) protein to determine the locoregional fibroblast dynamics, activation, and fibrotic encapsulation of polymeric materials. Fibroblasts invaded as individual cells and established a multicellular network, which transited to a two-compartment fibrotic response displaying an αSMA cold external capsule and a long-lasting, inner αSMA hot environment. The recruitment of fibroblasts and extent …

Systemic Delivery Of Divalent Europium From Ligand Screening With Implications To Direct Imaging Of Hypoxia, Md Mamunur Rashid, Brooke A Corbin, Pavan Jella, Caitlyn J Ortiz, Md Abul Hassan Samee, Robia G Pautler, Matthew J Allen

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Hypoxia is a hallmark of many diseases, including cancer, arthritis, heart and kidney diseases, and diabetes, and it is often associated with disease aggressiveness and poor prognosis. Consequently, there is a critical need for imaging hypoxia in a noninvasive and direct way to diagnose, stage, and monitor the treatment and development of new therapies for these diseases. Eu-containing contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging have demonstrated potential for in vivo imaging of hypoxia via changes in metal oxidation state from +2 to +3, but rapid oxidation in blood limits EuII-containing complexes to only studies compatible with direct injection to sites. …

Ototoxicity Of Topical Antibiotic Ear Drops In Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media In Humans: A Review Of The Literature, Syed Zohaib Maroof Hussain, Syed S Hashmi, Asad Qayyum

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

An electronic search of the literature was performed for reported cases of ototoxicity associated with the use of topical antibiotic ear drops in humans. The dosage, duration, and type of ototoxic preparations involved were recorded. Due to the scant quantity of low-quality information that is currently available, there was uncertainty about the usefulness of topical antibiotics in enhancing the resolution of ear discharge in patients with chronic suppurative otitis media. However, despite this uncertainty, there are some data to show that using topical antibiotics in comparison to a placebo or in conjunction with a systemic antibiotic may be useful. Additionally, …
