Are High Levels Of Educator Bias Associated With The Disproportionate Discipline Of Black Students?, Melissa Ann Ramos Jan 2022

Are High Levels Of Educator Bias Associated With The Disproportionate Discipline Of Black Students?, Melissa Ann Ramos

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Data on school discipline inequities have shown disproportionate numbers of Black students suspended and expelled compared to their non-Black counterparts. Despite the implementation of evidence-based solutions such as positive behavior supports and intervention, educator professional development, and restorative practices aimed at closing the racial discipline gap, little to no change has occurred. Critical Race Theory is used as a lens for viewing racial hierarchies as a socially constructed tool to oppress people of color. This oppression can be seen in various aspects of society and in education, especially in school discipline. It is fueled by biases, both implicit and explicit. …

A Quasi-Experimental Correlational Study Of Knowledge, Attitude, Behavior Of Nutrition Paraprofessionals Receiving An Online Nutrition Education Training. A Framework For Training Nutrition Paraprofessionals In Northwest Georgia Wic, Cicely Clarisse Thomas Jan 2022

A Quasi-Experimental Correlational Study Of Knowledge, Attitude, Behavior Of Nutrition Paraprofessionals Receiving An Online Nutrition Education Training. A Framework For Training Nutrition Paraprofessionals In Northwest Georgia Wic, Cicely Clarisse Thomas

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Background In 1998, Georgia Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) adopted the Florida Department of Public Health WIC Nutrition Training Guide. The purpose of adopting the course was to use it as a resource to properly educate and train nutrition paraprofessionals to conduct low risk education to Georgia WIC participants.1 The Georgia WIC policy requires that each nutrition paraprofessional complete the approved nutrition training prior to educating WIC participants. The current resource for training nutrition paraprofessionals in Georgia WIC is outdated. Last updated in 2007, the formal training no longer accurately trains paraprofessional staff to …

Hosting A Community-Based Local Electricity Market In A Residential Network, Aziz Saif, Shafi K. Khadem, Michael Conlon, Brian Norton

Articles

This paper presents the potential of building a local electricity market (LEM) to boost the deployment of the local energy communities, centred around active customers with distributed energy resources (DERs). To conduct a comprehensive and detailed study on different cases with reduced computational burdens, this paper adopts a simplified modelling approach where the market and network model simulations are performed in a cascaded, decoupled fashion. This allows achieving the optimal LEM output for the energy community with different DER assets that are not bounded by the network constraints. The investigation involves quantifying the benefits brought by LEM to energy communities …

Two Mechanisms For Formation Of Ferronematic Phase Studied By Dielectric Spectroscopy, Neelam Yadav, Yuri Panarin, J.K. Vij, Wanhe Jiang, Georg H. Mehl

Articles

A non-chiral ferroelectric nematic compound DIO was studied by dielectric spectroscopy in the frequency range 0.01 Hz to 10 MHz over a wide range of temperatures. The compound exhibits three nematic phases on cooling from the isotropic phase, viz. the ordinary paraelectric nematic N; intermediate nematic NX and ferroelectric NF phases. The lower frequency relaxation process P1 is similar to those observed in other ferronematic compounds. It is a continuation of the molecular flip-flop mode in the isotropic phase and corresponds to the collective movement of dipoles which are strongly coupled with splay fluctuations in the nematic phases. In addition …

Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking And Linear Electrooptic Response In The Achiral Ferronematic Compound, Neelam Yadav, Yuri Panarin, Wanhe Jiang, Georg H. Mehl, J.K. Vij

Articles

A compound with the constituent non-chiral molecules, DIO, known to exhibit three nematic subphases namely N, Nx and NF, is studied by polarizing microscopy as function of the alignment layers on one of the substrates, no alignment on any of the substrates, alignment layer on both substrates with parallel and antiparallel rubbing, different cell spacings. The cell with one alignment layer is also studied by electro-optics. N is found to be a conventional nematic phase, but it shows two additional unusual features: chiral domains of opposite chirality and the linear EO response to the applied signal under certain experimental conditions. …

A Hybrid Machine Learning Technique For Feature Optimization In Object-Based Classification Of Debris-Covered Glaciers, Shikha Sharda, Mohit Srivastava, Hemendra Singh Gusain, Naveen Kumar Sharma, Kamaljit Singh Bhatia, Mohit Bajaj, Harsimrat Kaur, Hossam Zawbaa, Salah Kamel

Articles

Object-based features like spectral, topographic, and textural are supportive to determine debris-covered glacier classes. The original feature space includes relevant and irrelevant features. The inclusion of all these features increases the complexity and renders the classifier’s performance. Therefore, feature space optimization is requisite for the classification process. Previous studies have shown a rigorous exercise in manually selecting the best combination of features to define the target class and proven to be a time consuming task. The present study proposed a hybrid feature selection technique to automate the selection of the best suitable features. This study aimed to reduce the classifier’s …

Articles

The thermoelectric generator (TEG) system has attracted extensive attention because of its applications in centralized solar heat utilization and recoverable heat energy. The operating efficiency of the TEG system is highly affected by operating conditions. In a series-parallel structure, due to diverse temperature differences, the TEG modules show non-linear performance. Due to the non-uniform temperature distribution (NUTD) condition, several maximum power points (MPPs) appear on the P/V curve. In multiple MPPs, the true global maximum power points (GMPP) are very important for optimum action. The existing conventional technologies have slow tracking speed, low productivity, and unwanted fluctuations in voltage curves. …

Optimal Allocation Of Distributed Generation With The Presence Of Photovoltaic And Battery Energy Storage System Using Improved Barnacles Mating Optimizer, Ali Selim, Salah Kamel, Hossam Zawbaa, Baseem Khan, Francisco Jurado

Articles

This paper proposes an improved version of Barnacles mating optimizer (BMO) for solving the optimal allocation problem of distribution generator (DGs) in radial distribution systems (RDSs). BMO is a recent bioinspired optimization algorithm that mimics the intelligence behavior of Barnacles' mating. However, like with any metaheuristic optimization approach, it may face issues such as local optima trapping and low convergence rate. Hence, an improved BMO is adopted based on the quasi oppositional (QOBMO) and the chaos maps theories (CQOBMO). The two improvement methods are applied to increase the convergence performance of the conventional BMO. To prove the efficiency of the …

Enhanced Chaotic Manta Ray Foraging Algorithm For Function Optimization And Optimal Wind Farm Layout Problem, Fatima Dadqaq, Rachid Ellaia, Mohammed Ouassaid, Hossam Zawbaa, Salah Kamel

Articles

Manta ray foraging optimization (MRFO) algorithm is relatively a novel bio-inspired optimization technique directed to given real-world engineering problems. In this present work, wind turbines layout (WTs) inside a wind farm is considered a real nonlinear optimization problem. In spite of the better convergence of MRFO, it gets stuck into local optima for large problems. The chaotic sequences are among the performed techniques used to tackle this shortcoming and improve the global search ability. Therefore, ten chaotic maps have been embedded into MRFO. To affirm the performance of the suggested chaotic approach CMRFO, it was First assessed using the IEEE …

The Environmental Aspects Of Renewable Energy Consumption And Structural Change In Sweden: A New Perspective From Wavelet-Based Granger Causality Approach, Tomiwa Sunday Adebayo, Ridwan Lanre Ibrahim, Ephraim Bonah Agyekum, Hossam Zawbaa, Salah Kamel Jan 2022

The Environmental Aspects Of Renewable Energy Consumption And Structural Change In Sweden: A New Perspective From Wavelet-Based Granger Causality Approach, Tomiwa Sunday Adebayo, Ridwan Lanre Ibrahim, Ephraim Bonah Agyekum, Hossam Zawbaa, Salah Kamel

Articles

The current paper assessed the time-frequency analysis interrelationship between CO2 emissions and financial development, economic growth, renewable energy use, structural change, and non-renewable energy use in Sweden. We utilized a quarterly dataset stretching from 1980-2019. In order to unlock these interrelationships, we leverage wavelet tools (wavelet-based Granger causality and wavelet coherence). The wavelet-based Granger causality (WGC) test accounts for the issue of multiple time scales in a time series analysis. Another uniqueness of the WGC lies in its resistance to distribution assumption and misspecification in a time series model. Additionally, the wavelet coherence estimator instantaneously evaluates correlation and causality among …

The Institutions Of Family Law, Clare Huntington Jan 2022

The Institutions Of Family Law, Clare Huntington

Faculty Scholarship

Family law scholarship is thriving, with scholars using varied methodologies to analyze intimate partner violence, cohabitation, child maltreatment, juvenile misconduct, and child custody, to name but a few areas of study. Despite the richness of this discourse, however, most family law scholars ignore a key tool deployed in virtually every other legal-academic domain: institutional analysis. This methodology, which plays a foundational role in legal scholarship, focuses on four basic questions. Scholars often begin empirically, identifying the specific legal, social, and economic institutions that shape an area of legal regulation. Beyond descriptive accounts, scholars analyze how authority is and should be …

Toward A Fair And Sustainable Corporate Governance System: Reflections On Leo Strine, Jr.'S Writing On Institutional Investors, Dorothy S. Lund

Faculty Scholarship

It is a privilege to contribute to this Festschrift for my friend, mentor, and co-author, Leo Strine, Jr. It is also a pleasure to revisit his vast body of work and to re-experience the breadth and depth of his scholarship, as well as reflect on his unparalleled influence on the development of corporate law that he brought about while presiding over its most influential courts for twenty-one years.

In thinking about this essay, I recalled a conversation that I had with “CJS” when I was serving as his law clerk. In this conversation, he decried (with James Taylor blasting in …

In Search Of Good Corporate Governance, Dorothy S. Lund

Faculty Scholarship

In this Forum Response, Dorothy Lund considers whether the “corporate governance gap” between large and small public companies is the product of harmful or beneficial forces, and in so doing, rejects the idea that there is a single governance framework that is optimal for all public companies.

Asset Managers As Regulators, Dorothy S. Lund Jan 2022

Asset Managers As Regulators, Dorothy S. Lund

Faculty Scholarship

The conventional view of regulation is that it exists to constrain corporate activity that harms the public. But amid perceptions of government failure, many now call on corporations to tackle social problems themselves. And in this moment of dissatisfaction with government, powerful asset managers have stepped in to serve as regulators of last resort, adopting rules that bind corporate America on issues of great social importance, including climate change and workplace diversity. This Article describes this dynamic — where shareholders have become regulators — which has been made possible by the rise of institutional shareholding (and index investing in particular) …

A Time For Triage, Michael B. Gerrard Jan 2022

A Time For Triage, Michael B. Gerrard

Faculty Scholarship

The world is desperately behind in the energy transformation needed to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Catching up requires a massive buildout of wind and solar power and associated infrastructure, but in the United States many impediments stand in the way. Among them, ironically enough, are environmental laws. Here I argue that we must accept difficult tradeoffs, sacrificing some of what we consider precious in order to avoid far worse impacts.

Illiberalism And Administrative Government, Jeremy K. Kessler Jan 2022

Illiberalism And Administrative Government, Jeremy K. Kessler

Faculty Scholarship

Driven by the perception that liberal democracy is in a state of crisis across the developed world, political and legal commentators have taken to contrasting two alternatives: “illiberal democracy” (or populism) and “undemocratic liberalism” (or technocracy). According to the logic of this antinomy, once an erstwhile liberal-democratic nation-state becomes too populist, it is on the path toward illiberal democracy; once it becomes too technocratic, it is on the path toward undemocratic liberalism.

While the meanings of liberalism and democracy are historically and conceptually fraught, the contemporary discourse of liberal democratic crisis assumes a few minimal definitions. Within this discourse, liberalism …

Crime And The Corporation: Making The Punishment Fit The Corporation, John C. Coffee Jr. Jan 2022

Crime And The Corporation: Making The Punishment Fit The Corporation, John C. Coffee Jr.

Faculty Scholarship

The debate over corporate criminal liability has long involved a fight between proponents who argue that corporate liability is necessary for effective deterrence and opponents who claim that it “punishes the innocent.” This Article agrees and disagrees with both sides. Corporate criminal liability could play a critical role in establishing an effective deterrent to organizational misconduct, but today it largely fails. Currently, we have a system that combines Deferred Prosecution Agreements, Non-Prosecution Agreements, and extraordinarily generous sentencing credits for compliance plans that have failed, and the result is a system that is more carrots than sticks. The evidence seems clear …

Floors And Ceilings In International Copyright Treaties: Berne/Trips/Wct Minima And Maxima, Jane C. Ginsburg

Faculty Scholarship

This paper addresses “floors” – minimum substantive international protections, and “ceilings” – maximum substantive international protections, set out in the Berne Convention and subsequent multilateral copyright accords. While much scholarship has addressed Berne minima, the “maxima” have generally received less attention. This Comment first describes the general structure of the Berne Convention, TRIPS and WCT regarding these contours, and then analyzes their application to the recent “press publishers’ right” promulgated in the 2019 EU Digital Single Market Directive. Within the universe of multilateral copyright obligations, the Berne maxima (prohibition of protection for facts and news of the day), buttressed by …

Faculty Scholarship

New formulations of prescription drugs can improve convenience and tolerability for patients, but they also constitute manufacturer strategies to extend brand-name drug market exclusivity periods. We examined whether new formulations of brand-name novel drugs were associated with novel drugs’ sales and/or therapeutic value, as well as characterized first new formulations’ approval timing relative to the novel drug’s generic approval. We found that manufacturers are several times more likely to secure Food and Drug Administration approval for a new formulation for existing drugs that have reached blockbuster status. (Blockbuster drugs are the most profitable drugs with more than $1 billion in …

Russia, Ukraine, And The Future World Order, Ingrid (Wuerth) Brunk, Monica Hakimi

Faculty Scholarship

Russia's invasion of Ukraine, initiated on February 24, 2022, is among the most — if not the most — significant shocks to the global order since World War II. This piece assesses the stakes of the invasion for the core principles that lie at the heart of contemporary international law and the world order that it has helped to create. We argue, relying in part on the other contributions to the October 2022 agora on Ukraine in the American Journal of International Law, that however this war ends, it will reshape, in ways large and small, the world we …

Barbarians Inside The Gates: Raiders, Activists, And The Risk Of Mistargeting, Zohar Goshen, Reilly S. Steel

Faculty Scholarship

This Article argues that the conventional wisdom about corporate raiders and activist hedge funds — raiders break things and activists fix them — is wrong. Because activists have a higher risk of mistargeting — mistakenly shaking things up at firms that only appear to be underperforming — they are much more likely than raiders to destroy value and, ultimately, social wealth.

As corporate outsiders who challenge the incompetence or disloyalty of incumbent management, raiders and activists play similar roles in reducing “agency costs” at target firms. The difference between them comes down to a simple observation about their business models: …

International Bureaucracies: Extraterritorial Reach Of The European Commission’S Legal Expertise, Anu Bradford

Faculty Scholarship

The EU exercises significant influence over global regulatory standards, whether as a result of its ability to unilaterally export its rules to foreign markets via market mechanisms – a phenomenon that I have elsewhere described as ‘the Brussels Effect’ – or by entrenching them globally through bilateral or multilateral negotiations. In all cases, the legal expertise of the Commission is central. It either pro-actively supplies its expertise to their foreign counterparts or responds to the demand to offer technical expertise to create a rule-based order that closely imitates the regulatory state in Europe. Companies also resort to the Commission as …
