This study aimed to model adolescents’ cardiorespiratory fitness performance change trajectories longitudinally across high school years and its relation to school- and individual/student-level factors. We employed hierarchical linear modeling to examine longitudinal cardiorespiratory fitness performance changes, as measured by the progressive aerobic capacity endurance run (PACER), over the years, between sexes, and in association with the school-level variables. Participants were 76,227 adolescents from 80 high schools in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. School-level academic performance (SAP), the percent of students eligible for free and reduced-price meals (FARM), and physical education student-faculty ratio were obtained with permission from the …

Studies have found that youth are experiencing higher anxiety levels than prior to COVID-19, and youth with type 1 diabetes are at higher risk. Medical specialty camps are a type of camp that provide opportunities for youth with chronic illnesses to share common goals, increase socialization, improve camper well-being, and increase knowledge of diabetes management. The program evaluation sought to determine the impact of a campers’ outcomes of independence and perceived competence and familial impact during COVID-19. Over half the participants were at their first diabetes camp and 71% of the campers felt their perceived competence “increased a little bit” …

This study examined how students with orthopedic impairments experienced strategies identified in the literature to support ‘inclusion’. An interpretative phenomenological analysis research approach was used, and six students with orthopedic impairments (age 10–14 years) served as participants. Data sources were written prompts, semi-structured, audiotaped interviews, and reflective interview notes. Based on thematic data analysis, four themes were constructed: “It’s kind of embarrassing”: experiences with support; “I don’t want to be different”: equipment, activity, and rule modifications; “I like to be a part of the conversation”: autonomy and choice in PE; and “I would rather be like the other students”: discussing …

Background: It is increasingly recognized that children's physical activity behaviors are shaped by neighborhood environment factors and their parent's support. However, these factors have been scarcely studied among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a population at risk of inactivity.
Objective: This cross-sectional survey study was designed to examine how neighborhood environmental factors and parental support are related to physical activity levels of children with ASD. Also, this study examined if the relationship between the environment and physical activity is modified by demographic factors and COVID-19 related concerns.
Methods: An online survey was completed by parents of children with ASD …

Part of a volume about storytelling in academic library contexts, this chapter reflects on the use of case studies in a sequenced information literacy curriculum in ENGL 2010 (Intermediate Writing: Research Writing in a Persuasive Mode). In highly interactive sessions across the semester, students collaboratively researched a case study topic and co-created artifacts that reflected their shared journey as researchers. The chapter is organized into the following sections, consistent with the other chapters in the book: classroom vignette, storytelling goal, audience, delivery, theory, cultural considerations, and practical examples. Readers will learn about things to consider when using case-based problem-based learning …

The Sin Of Racism, Ray Almanza
The Sin Of Racism, Ray Almanza
LMU Theses and Dissertations
This project examines the history of racism in relation to the Catholic Church. This history amounts to an indictment of the Roman Catholic Church not only as a neutral party in the historical emergence of white supremacy, but a directly linked cause of racism. First, it describes how racism emerged in its modern manifestation in three major dimensions which include the geopolitical, economic, and social. Then, it centers on two general forms of analysis, a cultural analysis, and a philosophical analysis. Drawing on insights from Liberation Theology, various themes are highlighted as they apply to the discussion of race in …
The Application Of Poka-Yoke To Administration Functions Within An Organisation., Craig Dixon Woodward
The Application Of Poka-Yoke To Administration Functions Within An Organisation., Craig Dixon Woodward
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Poka-yoke is a quality assurance technique developed by Shigeo Shingo in the 1960s. It is based on the theory that errors and defects have a cause and effect relationship. A defect is purely the effect of an error and by employing poka-yoke devices within processes to remove errors, defects can also be eliminated. The use of poka-yoke has made a significant contribution to organisations' ability to effectively control their core manufacturing processes but little attention has been given to the mistake-proofing of the surrounding administration or support processes. This thesis provides a definition of "administration" and justifies the need for …

Access to carbocyclic C-nucleosides (CC-Ns) is currently restricted. The few methods available to make CC-Ns suffer from long syntheses and poor modularity, hindering the examination of potentially important chemical space. Here we report an approach to CC-Ns which uses an asymmetric Suzuki-Miyaura type reaction as the key C-C bond forming step. After coupling the densely functionalized racemic bicyclic allyl chloride and heterocyclic boronic acids, the trisubstituted cyclopentenyl core is elaborated to RNA analogues via a hydroborylation-homologation-oxidation sequence. We demonstrate that the approach can be used to produce a variety of enantiomerically enriched CC-Ns, including a carbocyclic derivative of Showdomycin.
Who Gets To Know? Combating Colonial Epistemic Oppression, Timothy J. Cotter
Who Gets To Know? Combating Colonial Epistemic Oppression, Timothy J. Cotter
Senior Independent Study Theses
This Independent Study thesis is divided into five chapters. In the introduction, I explain the focus of the paper. In the second chapter, “Landscapes of Epistemic Injustice,” I clarify the concept of epistemic injustice by breaking it down into hermeneutical injustice and testimonial injustice. I argue that we have obligations to each other as knowers and producers of knowledge, and the content of these obligations within a given situation depends upon the social position of both the speaker and the audience or audiences. In the third chapter, “Epistemic Oppression and Colonialism,” I contend that Western colonial projects frequently enact third-order …

Affirmed Or Delegated? Finding Inherent Tribal Civil Power To Issue Protection Orders Against All Persons In Light Of Spurr V. Pope, Kelly Gaines Stoner, Cherokee Ancestry, Lauren Van Schilfgaarde, Cochiti Pueblo
Tribal Law Journal
Federal courts have wreaked havoc on tribal jurisdiction by injecting incertitude over their most basic authority, including the authority to issue and enforce civil protection orders. This jurisdictional incertitude causes not just legal disruption, but also further compromises the safety of Native people who are disproportionately victimized, especially by gender-based forms of violence. While Congress has been slow to remedy the onslaught of judicial limitations on tribal jurisdiction, Congress has at least remedied tribal authority to issue and enforce protection orders in 18 U.S.C. § 2265(e). However, even in this remedy, jurisdictional incertitude remains.

Diffuse midline gliomas (DMG) are a highly aggressive and universally fatal subgroup of pediatric tumors responsible for the majority of childhood brain tumor deaths. Median overall survival is less than 12 months with a 90% mortality rate at 2 years from diagnosis. Research into the underlying tumor biology and numerous clinical trials have done little to change the invariably poor prognosis. Continued development of novel, efficacious therapeutic options for DMGs remains a critically important area of active investigation. Given that DMGs are not amenable to surgical resection, have only limited response to radiation, and are refractory to traditional chemotherapy, immunotherapy …

PURPOSE: In vivo, the circadian clock drives 24-h rhythms in human physiology. Isolated cells in vitro retain a functional clockwork but lack necessary timing cues resulting in the rapid loss of tissue-level circadian rhythms. This study tests the hypothesis that repeated daily mechanical stimulation acts as a timing cue for the circadian clockwork. The delineation and integration of circadian timing cues into predictive in vitro model systems, including organ-on-a-chip (OOAC) devices, represent a novel concept that introduces a key component of in vivo physiology into predictive in vitro model systems.

Background:
Compared to more prevalent arthritic conditions, ankle arthritis is complicated by an earlier age of onset. Recently published data demonstrates excellent survivorship and complication rates in short-/midterm follow-up of younger patients who received a primary total ankle arthroplasty (TAA). Additionally, older TAA patients display comparable reported outcomes relative to hip/knee arthroplasty. However, there remains a paucity of literature surrounding the reported outcomes of younger patients undergoing TAA. Thus, our aim was to assess the reported outcomes of individuals aged <50 years receiving a primary TAA.
Methods:
A retrospective cohort analysis of adult patients <50 years who received a primary total ankle replacement was conducted. Patient demographics, diagnosis, treatment, and outcome characteristics were recorded from a chart review of 41 patients with at least 1 year of postoperative clinical follow-up. Postoperative reported outcomes were obtained via telephone interviews. Primary outcomes that were measured included emotional and physical health, activity limitation, ambulation, and global health. Measures used included the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Global Health, and Sickness Impact Profile Ambulation. The functional outcomes in our study sample were compared with age- and gender-matched norms from a general US population, and 95% CIs were calculated for each functional outcome mean. Student t test was used for continuous variables, and χ2 analysis was used …50>

The 2022 Association of Pathology Chairs Annual Meeting included a live discussion session and a pre-meeting recorded panel webinar sponsored by the Senior Fellows Group (former chairs of academic departments of pathology who have remained active in the Association of Pathology Chairs). The presentation was focused on transition planning for academic health center leaders. Each of the discussion group panelists had served as a pathology department chair as well as in more senior leadership positions, and they provided perspectives based upon their personal experiences. It was noted that such positions are often "at will" appointments of indeterminate length and that …

Acute kidney injury (AKI) occurs in ~20% of patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy; however, only 2-5% will develop ICI-mediated immune nephritis. Conventional tests are nonspecific in diagnosing disease pathology and invasive procedures (i.e. kidney biopsy) may not be feasible. In other autoimmune renal diseases, urinary immune cells correlated with the pathology or were predictive of disease activity. Corresponding evidence and analysis are absent for ICI-mediated immune nephritis. We report the first investigation analyzing immune cell profiles of matched kidney biopsies and urine of patients with ICI-AKI. We demonstrated the presence of urinary T cells in patients with immune …

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) undergo functional maturation upon their migration from bone marrow and introduction to a site of injury. This inflammatory licensing leads to heightened immune regulation via cell-to-cell interaction and the secretion of immunomodulatory molecules, such as anti-inflammatory mediators and antioxidants. Pro-inflammatory cytokines are a recognized catalyst of inflammatory licensing; however, biomechanical forces, such as fluid shear stress, are a second, distinct class of stimuli that incite functional maturation. Here we show mechanotransduction, achieved by exposing MSC to various grades of wall shear stress (WSS) within a scalable conditioning platform, enhances the immunomodulatory potential of MSC independent of …

INTRODUCTION: Dysphagia is associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and resource utilization in hospitalized patients, but studies on outcomes in geriatric trauma patients with dysphagia are limited. We hypothesized that geriatric trauma patients with dysphagia would have worse clinical outcomes compared with those without dysphagia.
METHODS: Patients with and without dysphagia were compared in a single-center retrospective cohort study of trauma patients aged ≥65 years admitted in 2019. The primary outcome was mortality. Secondary outcomes included intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay (LOS), hospital LOS, discharge destination, and unplanned ICU admission. Multivariable regression analyses and Bayesian analyses adjusted for age, …

INTRODUCTION: In this article, we review research on the impact of young adult literature (YAL) on young people's sexuality-related beliefs. This research points to the potential of YAL as a tool through which schools can offer sex education that is truly "comprehensive" by providing young people an opportunity to grapple with questions about gender, sexuality, and healthy relationships in literature classes, and to complement CSE in health education classes. This broader approach addresses a potential limitation of school-based comprehensive sex education (CSE). CSE certainly promotes young people's health and well-being, but an emphasis on biological dimensions of sexual and reproductive …

In this update we present a series of papers focused on topics that have emerged in vascular disease over the prior year. The first two papers focus on the pathogenesis of vascular malformations, the first on brain arteriovenous malformations, and the second on cerebral cavernous malformations. These disorders can lead to significant brain injuries from intracerebral hemorrhage (if they rupture) or other neurological complications, including seizures. The next set of papers reflects work that has advanced our understanding of how the brain and the immune system "communicate" after brain injury, including stroke (papers 3-6). The first of these shows that …

Diabetic patients have larger infarcts, worse neurological deficits, and higher mortality rate after an ischemic stroke. Evidence shows that in diabetes, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis was dysregulated and levels of cortisol increased. Based on the role of the HPA axis in immunity, we hypothesized that diabetes-dysregulated stress response exacerbates stroke outcomes via regulation of inflammation. To test this hypothesis, we assessed the regulation of the HPA axis in diabetic mice before and after stroke and determined its relevance in the regulation of post-stroke injury and inflammation. Diabetes was induced in C57BL/6 mice by feeding a high-fat diet and intraperitoneal injection …

Asthma is phenotypically heterogeneous with several distinctive pathological mechanistic pathways. Previous studies indicate that neutrophilic asthma has a poor response to standard asthma treatments comprising inhaled corticosteroids. Therefore, it is important to identify critical factors that contribute to increased numbers of neutrophils in asthma patients whose symptoms are poorly controlled by conventional therapy. Leukocytes release chromatin fibers, referred to as extracellular traps (ETs) consisting of double-stranded (ds) DNA, histones, and granule contents. Excessive components of ETs contribute to the pathophysiology of asthma; however, it is unclear how ETs drive asthma phenotypes and whether they could be a potential therapeutic target. …

BACKGROUND: Contact athletes who experience posterior shoulder instability have a high likelihood of recurrence necessitating surgery.
INDICATIONS: Patients with posterior shoulder instability without glenoid or humeral head bone loss who have failed activity modification, bracing, and physical therapy may benefit from arthroscopic stabilization surgery.
TECHNIQUE DESCRIPTION: We describe a technique for arthroscopic labral repair with capsular plication through 4 portals in the lateral decubitus position.
RESULTS: Arthroscopic capsulolabral reconstruction is an effective and reliable treatment for posterior shoulder instability with good patient-reported outcomes, low recurrence rates, and high rate of return-to-play.
DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: Arthroscopic capsulolabral reconstruction in the lateral decubitus position …
