Geographic Range Size As A Predictor Of Dispersal-Dependent Behavioral Traits In Two Clades Of A Terrestrial Salamander, Teah Evers
Masters Theses
Animal movement has the potential to affect diverse processes within ecology and evolution including range expansion, gene flow, adaptation, and speciation. Two aspects of animal personality that are germane to dispersal are exploratory and aggressive behavior. These behavioral categories may represent a trade-off such that energy invested in territorial defense leaves little energy for movement and dispersal. The Eastern Red-backed Salamander (Plethodon cinereus) is a wide ranging, dispersal limited, terrestrial salamander with well documented phylogeographic divisions. I examined dispersal-relevant behavioral traits within two clades of P. cinereus with disparate geographic ranges. The Northern Clade (NC) has a range extending from …

Frailty in Older Adults
● Frailty is a health condition that effects increasing numbers of the population past the age of 65
● The modified Physical Performance Test (mPPT) is a test that assesses multiple dimensions of physical function with different levels of difficulty. It has been shown to assess frailty in an older adult population.
● Due to health care barriers, it may be advantageous to assess individuals via telehealth.
● It is critical to determine the concurrent validity of telehealth delivery of mPPT with that of a clinical setting to determine if it can increase access to care

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
Black/African American students account for 6.5% of the enrollment in entry-level occupational therapy (OT) and occupational therapy assistant (OTA) programs (AOTA, 2019). OT and OTA programs serve as the entry point to increasing diversity in the profession and contribute to a diverse healthcare workforce. Limited research exists that offers insight into the experiences of minority students enrolled in OT and OTA programs. The purpose of this study was to explore the academic experiences of Black/African American students enrolled in entry-level OT and OTA programs to identify supports and barriers in the educational experience. Eligible participants were asked to complete an …
Group Action Planning To Promote Well-Being Of Non-Traditional Students In A Hybrid Program, Elena W. Espiritu
Group Action Planning To Promote Well-Being Of Non-Traditional Students In A Hybrid Program, Elena W. Espiritu
Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
Non-traditional occupational therapy students experience stress and occupational imbalance during their educational experience due to academic and non-academic factors, which decreases their well-being. Throughout the occupational therapy literature, participation in a variety of occupations is known to positively impact well-being. However, there are limited interventions available to foster occupational therapy students’ overall well-being through occupational engagement. Furthermore, there is a scarcity of interventions specifically designed to meet the unique needs of non-traditional occupational therapy students. Action planning is a structured goal setting format by which a person develops specific strategies to achieve desirable outcomes. This qualitative descriptive study described the …

Short-Term Program On Three-Dimensional Printed Self-Help Devices For Occupational Therapy Students: A Pre-Post Intervention Study, Yusuke Harada, Yuki Sawada, Jun Suzurikawa, Rie Takeshima, Tomoko Kondo
Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
Despite the increasing importance of digital fabrication, of which three-dimensional printing is an important aspect, educational programs in this area have not been fully developed. To utilize three-dimensional printing optimally, occupational therapists need to be familiar with this new technology, understand its scope of application, and possess certain levels of skills for producing. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a short-term program for occupational therapy students to increase the acceptance of three-dimensional printed devices by acquiring the basic knowledge and skills of making three-dimensional printed self-help devices. The research involved an intervention study with a …

Exploration Of A Short-Term Learning Community Focused On Evidence-Based Occupational Therapy Interventions For Children And Youth With Autism, Christine T. Myers, Sandra Brown, Ashley Parigian
Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
Continuing education (CE) for occupational therapists typically takes place in workshops, seminars, or webinars with little support for practice change after the event concludes. Continuing education that occurs over an extended time with opportunities for social learning and competence assessment may improve knowledge translation. This study explored how pediatric occupational therapists who participated in a short-term, online learning community acquired new knowledge about evidence-based interventions from learning activities and how they applied this new knowledge to practice. Weekly modules with facilitated discussions, competency self-assessment, and peer-reviewed journal article readings occurred over a six-week period. An exploratory design included content analysis …

Development And Content Validity Of The Personal-Professional Development Tool For Occupational Therapy Students During Community-Based Service Learning, Michaela Fraser, Pat Precin
Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
As community-based service-learning becomes more widely used in occupational therapy (OT) education, valid and reliable outcome measures are needed to ensure that student learning outcomes are meaningfully and consistently measured. Currently, educators may use instructor-developed questionnaires that have not been validated or employ narrowly focused or overly prescriptive surveys borrowed from other disciplines that may not fully capture the skills that are necessary for competent entry-level practice. Grounded in the Occupational Adaptation Model, the Personal-Professional Development Tool (PPDT) was developed to meet this need. The PPDT was designed as a non-normative, self-referential rating scale that OT students use to set …

The Science Of Pebax Shoes And Carbon Fiber Plates: What We Know Now, Matthew Klein
The Science Of Pebax Shoes And Carbon Fiber Plates: What We Know Now, Matthew Klein
Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy
In April of 2020, we posted a critical review diving into the research and evidence around the quickly emerging carbon fiber-plated and/or PEBAX-based footwear. We discussed several things including early thoughts on carbon plates, newer foams, geometries, interactions between them, and most importantly how much we do not know about what was truly going on. In a short two years, there has been a large amount of research into these topics. While there are still significant holes in our understanding due to research being so far behind current industry trends and development, we decided to create an update to address …

A Means For Tuning Primary Frequency Event Detection Algorithms, Sean Keene, Landon Hanks, Robert B. Bass
A Means For Tuning Primary Frequency Event Detection Algorithms, Sean Keene, Landon Hanks, Robert B. Bass
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Power system balancing authorities are routinely affected by sudden frequency fluctuations. These frequency events can precipitate cascading outages and cause damage to both customer-owned and utility equipment. In this document, we describe an Algorithm Evaluation Environment that uses a suite of metrics to evaluate an algorithm and quantify its efficacy. Using the Algorithm Evaluation Environment, a detection algorithm can be tuned to best match the definition of a frequency event as defined by experts within the context of their own balancing area. We demonstrate the utility of the Algorithm Evaluation Environment using a regression-based frequency event detection algorithm. This algorithm …
Automatic Assessment Of The Design Quality Of Student Python And Java Programs, J. Walker Orr
Automatic Assessment Of The Design Quality Of Student Python And Java Programs, J. Walker Orr
Faculty Publications - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
Programs are a kind of communication to both computers and people, hence as students are trained to write programs they need to learn to write well-designed, readable code rather than code that simply functions correctly. The difficulty in teaching good design practices that promote readability is the labor intensiveness of assessing student programs. Typically assessing design quality involves a careful reading of student programs in order to give personalized feedback which naturally is time consuming for instructors. We propose a rule-based system that assesses student programs for quality of design of and provides personalized, precise feedback on how to improve …

(Wp 2022-01) Economics As A Normative Discipline: Value Disentanglement In An ‘Objective’ Economics, John B. Davis
Economics Working Papers
This chapter critically evaluates standard economics’ treatment of positive and normative, drawing on Putnam’s (2002) fact-value entanglement argument. It argues that economics is an inherently value-laden discipline but may still be an ‘objective’ one. The means of achieving this is to carry out a programme of value disentanglement that evaluates research approaches according to whether their different value structures are consistent. The method employed assumes that economics and social science disciplines are built around anchor values or normative ideals and additional sets of values concerning what most people in those disciplines see as most valuable and good about human society …

Early Elementary Students' Use Of Shape And Location Schemas When Embedding And Disembedding, Laura Bofferding, Lizhen Chen, Sezai Kocabas, Mahtob Aqazade
Faculty Publications – Mathematics
Elementary students’ early development of embedding and disembedding is complex and paves the way for later STEM learning. The purpose of this study was to clarify the factors that support students’ embedding (i.e., overlapping shapes to form a new shape) and disembedding (i.e., identifying discrete shapes within another shape) through the use of filled shapes as opposed to shape frames. We recruited 26 Grade 1 students (~6–7 years old) and 23 Grade 3 students (~8–9 years old), asked them to work on two layered puzzle designs from the Color Code puzzle game, and interviewed them about their thinking processes. The …

Mathematics Faculty Publications
Frequent mental distress (FMD) is a measure of poor mental health days for at least 14 days out of 30 days. It is one of the important dimensions of the health-related quality of life. The underlying causes of FMD are diverse. However, the issue has not been explored extensively due to the lack of reliable data on mental health. The aim of this study was to examine the level and trends of FMD among the adults of the United States (US) and identify the socio-demographic, lifestyles, and chronic health outcomes related correlates of FMD. The data for the study was …
