Although “fake news” is as old as mass media itself, concerns over disinformation have reached a fever pitch in our current media environment. Online media outlets’ heavy reliance on user-generated content has altered the traditional gatekeeping functions and professional standards associated with traditional news organizations. The idea of objectivity-focused informational content has primarily been substituted for a realist acceptance of the power and popularity of opinion-driven “news.” This shift is starkly visible now: mainstream news media outlets knowingly spread hoaxes, conspiracy theories, and the like.
This current state of affairs is not some freak accident. The Supreme Court’s First Amendment …

Representation Learning On Heterogeneous Spatiotemporal Networks, Dakshak Keerthi Chandra
Representation Learning On Heterogeneous Spatiotemporal Networks, Dakshak Keerthi Chandra
Doctoral Dissertations
“The problem of learning latent representations of heterogeneous networks with spatial and temporal attributes has been gaining traction in recent years, given its myriad of real-world applications. Most systems with applications in the field of transportation, urban economics, medical information, online e-commerce, etc., handle big data that can be structured into Spatiotemporal Heterogeneous Networks (SHNs), thereby making efficient analysis of these networks extremely vital. In recent years, representation learning models have proven to be quite efficient in capturing effective lower-dimensional representations of data. But, capturing efficient representations of SHNs continues to pose a challenge for the following reasons: (i) Spatiotemporal …

Mechanical Properties Of Boride Based Ceramics, Alec Murchie
Doctoral Dissertations
“This research focuses on the elevated mechanical properties of diboride based materials at room and elevated temperatures. These materials include a ZrB2 ceramic, a ZrB2-WC-SiC ceramic, and a (Hf,Mo,Nb,Ta,W,Zr)B2 high entropy boride (HEB). The room temperature flexural strength for the ZrB2 ceramic was 447 MPa and the fracture toughness was 2.3 MPa·m1/2. The strength decreased to 196 MPa at 1800°C, and then increased to 360 MPa at 2300°C. The fracture toughness increased to 3.1 MPa·m1/2 at 2200°C. The strength up to 1800°C was likely controlled by a combination of effects: surface damage …
Peritectic Behavior Detection And Prediction In Fe-C-Si-Mn-Al System, Damilola Balogun
Peritectic Behavior Detection And Prediction In Fe-C-Si-Mn-Al System, Damilola Balogun
Doctoral Dissertations
"The non-uniformity of shell growth in the continuous casting of peritectic steels constitutes a major barrier to the commercial production of many steel grades such as Advanced high strength steels (AHSS), transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) steels, abrasion-resistant steels, advanced armor plate steels, and many newly proposed steel grades that contain high levels of silicon, manganese, and aluminum.
The shell growth non-uniformity experienced in the continuous casting of peritectic steels results in the formation of defects in the as-cast slab and therefore increases the operating risk from cast aborts and breakouts. The ability to predict and avoid peritectic behavior at the …

Sustainable Face Milling Of Inconel 718 Using Mql And Nanofluids Mql With Vegetable Oil As Base Fluid, Theodore Obumselu Nwoguh
Doctoral Dissertations
"Extreme heat and friction are generated in machining difficult-to-cut metals used in aerospace and nuclear industries leading to poor machinability (high cutting forces, rapid tool wear, shorter tool life, and poor surface integrity). Conventional flood coolant (CEC) used in industry is environmentally unfriendly, hazardous to operators, and unsustainable. These problems motivated this research, which can be mitigated with the use of effective biodegradable cutting fluids, appropriate cutting conditions, and lubrication/cooling strategies. This research provides a sustainable and environmentally friendly replacement to CEC. Firstly, the research characterized three vegetable oils (High Oleic Soybean Oil (HOSO), Low Oleic Soybean Oil (LOSO), and …
Design And Synthesis Of Purine Based Neuroprotectors And Novel Synthetic Methods For The Trifluoromethylation Of Aldehyde Hydrazones, Puspa Aryal
Doctoral Dissertations
"Purine-derived compounds are widely investigated as cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors that have broad applications in the design of pharmaceuticals for treating diseases, such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, and cancers. Towards the goal of effective AGE-inhibitors, and neuroprotector compounds we have synthesized a series of novel purine-based triazoles and investigated their neuroprotective effects, using SHSY-3Y human neuroblastoma cell line. Through these studies, we have identified purine-based neuroprotector compounds that favorably modulate oxidative stress induced by the Fenton reaction-generated reactive oxygen species (ROS).
The C(sp2−H)-trifluoromethylation of hydrazones would give access to the αtrifluoromethylated hydrazones that can serve as intermediates in the synthesis …

Femininity Reclaiming Chivalry In The Harry Potter Series, Ashley M. Watson
Femininity Reclaiming Chivalry In The Harry Potter Series, Ashley M. Watson
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This paper focuses on the reclaiming of chivalric values by female characters in the Harry Potter series by comparing them to Arthurian characters. Scholars have extensively compared the narrative of the Knights of the Round Table to the global phenomenon of the Harry Potter series, but in this paper I explore, through a feminist lens, a character comparison of the Harry Potter novels and Sir Thomas Malory’s Le Morte D’Arthur. I will show how female characters in modern literature reclaim chivalry. This is important because it exemplifies a shift in the position of women into a more active role. I …

Known internationally for novels such as The House of Mirth (1905) and The Age of Innocence (1921), New York-born Edith Wharton (1862-1937) began her writing career as a poet in 1878 with a self-published volume of Verses. She equated the work of architects and garden designers to that of poets in travel essays from the 1890s and early 1900s, many of which were collected and republished under the titles Italian Villas and their Gardens (1904), Italian Backgrounds (1905), and A Motor-Flight Through France (1908). The present article explores the aesthetics of writing, architecture, and home design in the earliest part …
Disentangling Mtor Complexes Underlying Pten-Loss-Associated Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kamran Tariq
Disentangling Mtor Complexes Underlying Pten-Loss-Associated Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kamran Tariq
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome 10 (PTEN) protein is a negative regulator of the AKT serine threonine kinases (Protein Kinase B) in the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway. Mutations in PTEN are found in patients with autism, epilepsy, or macrocephaly. In mouse models, Pten-loss results in neuronal hypertrophy, hyperexcitability, seizures, and social deficits. The underlying molecular mechanisms of these phenotypes are not well-delineated. I aimed to disentangle the role of the downstream mTOR complex 1 (mTORC1) and mTOR complex 2 (mTORC2) in orchestrating aberrations in neuronal form and function resulting from Pten-loss. First, we found that …

Communicating Clinic Visit Information To Family Caregivers, Reed Wr Bratches
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Statement of the Problem: Information from clinic visits is critical to family caregivers, who are the family members or friends who provide at-home care for their loved ones. However, patient’s clinic visits are infrequently attended by caregivers. While methods exist to communicate information from visits to patients, little is known about the methods used to communicate with caregivers, or their effects on caregiver outcomes. I address this gap in this dissertation through three studies.
Methods: A systematic review was used synthesize the methods used to communicate information to family caregivers and their impact on caregivers. A national survey of family …

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)
Computational–experimental analysis has allowed determining that the stereochemistry of the Staudinger reaction between ketenes and imines is strongly associated with the nature of the imine, which affects the two steps of the reaction. The first step, namely the nucleophilic attack of the sp2-hybridized nitrogen atom of the imine on the sp-hybridized carbon atom of the ketene, is affected by the energetically accessible in situ isomerization patterns of the imine. The second step consists of a conrotatory electrocyclization of the zwitterionic intermediate formed in the previous step. This latter pericyclic step depends on the inward/outward torquoelectronic effects generated by the substituents …

This study intends to explore the neuroprotective and memory-enhancing properties of Myristica malabarica (MM) leaf extracts on diabetic-induced cognitive decline rats. The models of Y maze and Morris water maze were selected for nootropic activity and neuroprotective properties were deliberate by assessing the levels of Ach, malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), nitric oxide (NO), catalase (CAT) and glutathione hormone (GSH) in diabetic rat brains. Significantly improved memory and learning with 100 mg/kg (P < 0.01) and 200 mg/kg (P < 0.001) of EAMM (L) and MAMM (L) in Y maze and Morris water maze models. Significant effect was observed in all the extracts with two doses when compared with diabetic control on day 75. The levels of AChE (P < 0.001), MDA (P < 0.01), and NO (P < 0.05) were decreased significantly and significantly raised (P < 0.01) levels of SOD, CAT, and GSH with MAMM (100 and 200 mg/kg) compared with disease control. Further studies on MM leaf are needed as evidence of cognitive impairment in defense against diabetes has been shown to expose its mode of action.

The Thai Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences
Objectives: The pharmacological basis of anti-inflammatory agents is geared toward maintaining body homeostasis. This study investigated the scientific underpinning and mechanisms of anti-inflammatory activity of root bark of Brenania brieyi. Material and Methods: The plant material was extracted with a mixture of methanol and chloroform (2:1) and fractionated with 0.2 volume water. Egg albumin-induced edema and cotton pellet-induced granuloma models were used to investigate anti-inflammatory activity while the possible mechanisms of actions were evaluated using standard methods. Results: Significant (P < 0.05) reduction in edema and granuloma tissue formation were recorded in fractions treated groups compared with the normal control. There was a significant (P < 0.05) inhibition of membrane hemolysis and phospholipase A2 (PLA2) activity by the fractions compared with the standard drugs, indomethacin, and prednisolone, respectively. Both fractions significantly (P < 0.05) inhibited prostaglandin (PG) synthase and nitric oxide radical activities compared with the control. However, varying doses of both fractions did not inhibit leukocyte migration compared with rats in indomethacin and control groups. The methanol fraction was found to be more potent in most of the tests. Conclusion: These results show that B. brieyi root bark has anti-inflammatory activity, and the potential underlying mechanisms of its action are inhibition of PLA2 and PG involved in inflammatory responses.
