Fully Probabilistic Reliability And Resilience Analysis Of Coastal Structures Based On Damage Evolution Simulation, D Malliouri, N Martzikos, V Tsoukala
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
An integrated methodology is presented to ensure coastal structures’ resilience to extreme wave conditions i.e. their ability to withstand further wave actions without reaching their ultimate limit state. Specifically, a fully probabilistic reliability analysis of a rubble mound breakwater is performed here, in combination with a prediction analysis of the expected time of the structure’s maintenance. The methodology combines information on the joint probability density function of significant wave height, spectral peak wave period, and storms’ duration and calculates the probability of occurrence of different levels of damage in the structure’s lifetime via the use of a fully probabilistic reliability …

Neurofilament light is a well-established marker of both acute and chronic neuronal damage and is increased in multiple neurodegenerative diseases. However, the protein is not well characterized in brain tissue or body fluids, and it is unknown what neurofilament light species are detected by commercial assays and whether additional species exist. We developed an immunoprecipitation-mass spectrometry assay using custom antibodies targeting various neurofilament light domains, including antibodies targeting Coil 1A/1B of the rod domain (HJ30.13), Coil 2B of the rod domain (HJ30.4) and the tail region (HJ30.11). We utilized our assay to characterize neurofilament light in brain tissue and CSF …

Amyloid-beta deposition is one of the hallmark pathologies in both sporadic Alzheimer's disease and autosomal-dominant Alzheimer's disease, the latter of which is caused by mutations in genes involved in amyloid-beta processing. Despite amyloid-beta deposition being a centrepiece to both sporadic Alzheimer's disease and autosomal-dominant Alzheimer's disease, some differences between these Alzheimer's disease subtypes have been observed with respect to the spatial pattern of amyloid-beta. Previous work has shown that the spatial pattern of amyloid-beta in individuals spanning the sporadic Alzheimer's disease spectrum can be reproduced with high accuracy using an epidemic spreading model which simulates the diffusion of amyloid-beta across …

Impact Of Fast-Track Regulatory Designations On Strategic Commercialization Decisions For Autologous Cell Therapies, Ching Lam, Edward Meinert, Aidong Yang, Zhanfeng Cui
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Background: Regulatory authorities around the world have introduced incentives to improve the speed-to-market of innovative therapies. Aim & methods: To better understand the capacity and portfolio planning decisions of autologous cell therapies and particularly the impact of fast-tracking designations, this paper describes a mixed-integer linear programming approach for the optimization of capacity investment and portfolio selection decisions to maximize the net present value of a candidate portfolio of therapies under different regulatory programs. Results: The illustrative example shows that fast-track designations allow a 25% earlier breakeven, 42–86% higher net present value over a 20-year horizon with earlier upfront capital and …
'Mercy, Tenderness, And Compassion': A Study Into The Inclusion Of Acts Of Communal And Familial Support Within Seventeenth-Century Quaker Records Of Sufferings, Toni Wadman
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
This thesis explores the inclusion of encounters of communal and familial compassion and support within seventeenth century Quaker records of sufferings. Whilst previous academic works have used these accounts of communal support to highlight the social integration of Friends within their local communities, little focus has been placed upon the purpose or reasoning behind their presence within Quaker suffering records. This thesis, therefore, examines how Friends perceived and understood these encounters as well as the reasoning and motivation behind their inclusion in their accounts of sufferings. To help answer these questions, this project consults the Original Records of Sufferings, handwritten …
Painting, Playing, Personas: Inserting Change In An Established Painting Practice, Robyn Jean Thomas
Painting, Playing, Personas: Inserting Change In An Established Painting Practice, Robyn Jean Thomas
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
This doctoral research project explores the impact and changes alternative identities —personas— and a play-based method have on my established painting practice while disentangling it from the belief that a single identity authentically makes a painting art. Its methodology provides a path to answering how using personas with 'play' within a painting practice form strategies meeting this project's aims. Three personas were created and applied across the first two stages of the studio inquiry using my painting practice's methods, including reiteration. In the third stage, continuing to paint independent of the personas, their impact and that of the infinite play …

Rethinking Liveness: An Exploration Of Phenomenological Liveness, Documentation, And Audience, Samantha Sully
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
This paper explores experiential liveness discourse through the lens of phenomenology, semiotics, and auto-ethnographical research. This thesis examined previous experiential liveness studies and discourses and how these ideologies build a discourse centred around audience/performer relationships, communitas and virtual communities. It explores the interactions between experiential and ontological liveness through documentation, digital archiving and Descartesian dualism. Further, this thesis re-frames core ontological terms within the phenomenological liveness context. It examines event and ritual as experiences and explores my experiences of liveness with reference to previous experiential liveness studies. Finally, this paper examines the importance of experiential liveness as its own discourse …

Development And Validation Of The Short Version Of The Sense Of Humor Scale (Shs-S), Sonja Heintz, Willibald Ruch, Chloe Lau, Donald H. Saklofske, Paul Mcghee
School of Psychology
Abstract. Humor training has become increasingly popular to enhance the “sense of humor” and well-being and to decrease depressive symptoms. Despite the wide applications of these training programs, the assessment of training efficacy has attracted less attention. The Sense of Humor Scale (SHS; McGhee, 1996 , 1999 ) recently was expanded to a long version (SHS-L) to enhance its internal consistency ( Ruch & Heintz, 2018 ). At the same time, there is also the need for a brief version of this scale. The purpose of the present study is to develop a short version (SHS-S) in both German- and …

A Meeting Of Positive Behaviors: The Relations Of Three Aspects Of Flexibility With Character Strengths., Valentina Vylobkova, Sonja Heintz
School of Psychology
INTRODUCTION: The adaptation of own plans and behaviors to new circumstances seems to be a desirable personal quality in the modern world. it has been assumed that adaptability cannot be transferred to a single character strength. METHODS: The present research examines this assumption using typical and daily behaviors of three aspects of flexibility (predictability, adaptability and orderliness) and 24 character strengths across two studies (N1 = 283, N2 = 188). RESULTS: Flexibility showed a consistent and large overlap with character strengths. Adaptability was positively related to most of the strengths. Predictability was positively related to humility and prudence, and orderliness …

Black cumin (Nigella sativa) is an important medicinal plant in the pharmacological industry. It is cultivated on a commercial scale, but its seeds have a slow, unsynchronized germination rate. Enhancing seed germination is crucial for improving the production of black cumin. The influence of presowing treatments [gibberellic acid (GA3), potassium nitrate, salicylic acid, and stratification at 4 °C] on seed germination was assessed. Seed germination was determined daily for 30 days, and germination parameters, including final germination percentage (FGP), corrected germination rate, number of days to reach 50% of FGP, and seedling length vigor index, were evaluated. Endogenous contents of …

Life In The Freezer: Protein Metabolism In Antarctic Fish, Keiron P.P. Fraser, Lloyd S. Peck, Melody S. Clark, Andrew Clarke, Simeon L. Hill
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Whole-animal, in vivo protein metabolism rates have been reported in temperate and tropical, but not Antarctic fish. Growth in Antarctic species is generally slower than lower latitude species. Protein metabolism data for Antarctic invertebrates show low rates of protein synthesis and unusually high rates of protein degradation. Additionally, in Antarctic fish, increasing evidence suggests a lower frequency of successful folding of nascent proteins and reduced protein stability. This study reports the first whole-animal protein metabolism data for an Antarctic fish. Groups of Antarctic, Harpagifer antarcticus, and temperate, Lipophrys pholis, fish were acclimatized to a range of overlapping water temperatures and …

Breaking’ The Magician’S Code: The Problem With Exposure Rules, Gustav Kuhn
School of Psychology
As the director of the MAGIC Lab, at Goldsmiths University of London, I oversee projects that combine psychological research methods with performance magic. For instance, we study misdirection and forcing tolearn more about consciousness and free will. We alsoseek to apply many of these principles to non-magicalcontexts. For example, we are currently exploring waysof implementing forcing principles in computergames, and we are even ‘teaching’ artificial agentsmagic deception, as part of a project to develop newcyber security technologies. By mixing magic trickswith science, we aim to uncover the secrets of the human mind (see Experiencing the Impossible [1]).

BACKGROUND: Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a progressive genetic disease that causes organ damage and reduces longevity. Hydroxyurea is an underutilized evidence-based medication that reduces complications and improves survival in SCD. In a multi-site clinical trial, part of the NIH-funded Sickle Cell Disease Implementation Consortium (SCDIC), we evaluate the implementation of a multi-level and multi-component mobile health (mHealth) patient and provider intervention to target the determinants and context of low hydroxyurea use. Given the complexity of the intervention and contextual variability in its implementation, we combined different behavioral and implementation theories, models, and frameworks to facilitate the evaluation of the …
Fea Modelling And Environmental Assessment Of A Thin-Walled Composite Drive Shaft, Joseph Searle, Maozhou Meng, John Summerscales
Fea Modelling And Environmental Assessment Of A Thin-Walled Composite Drive Shaft, Joseph Searle, Maozhou Meng, John Summerscales
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Fibre reinforced plastics (FRP) composites have been widely used in the automotive industry with the primary focus on reduced mass. However, there are relatively few reports on their application on power transmission components, such as drive shafts. This paper explores the feasibility of replacing the traditional structural steel by light weight FRP composites in a drive shaft. Three FRP composites are considered against a steel drive shaft; basalt/epoxy, carbon/epoxy, and CNT (carbon nanotubes) reinforced carbon/epoxy composites. The mechanical performance was analysed by finite element analysis (FEA) tool and classical laminate theory (CLT), while the environmental performance was evaluated by life …

Transports across the continental shelf edge enhance shelf-sea production, remove atmospheric carbon and imply an active boundary to ocean circulation. We estimate relatively large overall transport across three contrasted sectors of north-west European shelf edge: the Celtic Sea south-west of Britain, the Malin-Hebrides shelf west of Scotland, the West Shetland shelf north of Scotland. The estimates derive from measurements in the project FASTNEt (Fluxes across sloping topography of the North East Atlantic): drifters, moored current meters, effective “diffusivity” from drifter dispersion and salinity surveys, other estimates of velocity variance contributing to exchange. Process contributions include transport by along-slope flow, internal …
