The Impact Of A Year-Long Professional Development On Teacher Self-Efficacy In Personal Writing And The Teaching Of Writing, Guang-Lea Lee, Terri Brodeur, Cherng-Jyh Yen, Tian Luo, Pauline Salim Muljana

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

Long-term professional development (PD) initiatives are scant in the extant literature. This study examines the impact of a year-long, face-to-face teacher PD provided for teachers from a high-need elementary school to improve their personal writing and writing instruction. A mixed-methods approach was used to collect and analyze data primarily from pre- and post-surveys and interviews. Statistical analyses suggest that teachers’ self-efficacy toward writing instruction was improved, but not self-efficacy toward their personal writing. Various means of how the year-long teacher PD influenced their self-efficacy were demonstrated through qualitative analysis. Implications of conducting teacher PD on writing instruction were discussed.

Lauder Art Collections: Two Brothers, Two Collections, One City, Carol Bradford Abruzzo

MA Theses

This thesis highlights two New Yorkers who donate a plethora of art treasures to their beloved hometown. The value of these collective materials provides a permeance to the history of civilization. Art works within these institutions provides visual history and allows for an immediacy to learn and a simple way to connect with the past. However, the art is as good as it is culled into a meaningful collective with easy accessibility for all. The Leonard A. Lauder Cubist Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of New York and the Ronald S. Lauder Neue Galerie are two of the most distinguished …

A Case Review Of G. G. V Gloucester County School Board, Jill Gross M.S.

Student Work

In education today, one theme is reoccurring, the question of where and how transgender students fit into our classrooms, our buildings, and on our athletic fields. In G. G. v Gloucester County School Board 20 U.S.C. 1681 § (a); G. G., a minor, transgender male, is attempting to use the boys' restroom at his high school. With the approval of his school administration, G. G. began to use the boys' restroom until the local school board passed a policy banning him from using said restroom. G. G. alleges the board discriminated against him and violated Title IX and the Equal …

Review Of The Duck Factory: A History Of Waterfowl In North Dakota, By Mike Jacobs And Erik Fritzell, Douglas Johnson

The Prairie Naturalist

It was by geological accident that North Dakota became the heart of duck production in the continental United States. When the Wisconsin glaciation retreated some 11,000 years ago, it left an uneven layer of glacial till over much of North Dakota and nearby states and provinces, an area termed the Prairie Pothole Region. Large blocks of ice in the glacial till eventually melted and formed depressions that became wetlands, or prairie potholes. These were embedded in a matrix of soil that, with millennia of growth by deep-rooted prairie plants, became rich topsoil. The wetlands, surrounded by luxuriant grassland, were ideal …

Zea E-Books Collection

This English translation of 坊っちゃん (1906) was published in Tokyo by Ogawa Seibundo in 1918. It is a first-person narrative of a young man’s two-month tenure as assistant mathematics teacher at a provincial middle school in 1890s Japan. A native son of Tokyo, with all its traits and prejudices, he finds life in a narrow country town unappealing — with its dull and mischievous students, scheming faculty, bland diets, stifling rules, and gossipy inhabitants. Impulsive, combative, committed to strict ideals of honesty, honor, and justice, he is quickly enmeshed in the strategems of the head teacher, “Red Shirt.” His sufferings …

Tap ‘Follow’ #Fitfam: A Process Of Social Media Microcelebrity, Dominic G. Morais, Florian Hemme, Camille Reyes

School of Business Faculty Research

The practice of microcelebrity in social media has become part of the internet’s mainstream, and has led to the rise of influencers–trusted tastemakers in an industry niche–who are playing increasingly larger cultural and economic roles. Scholars have examined this topic since Senft introduced it in 2001, shedding light on strategies and practices of popular influencers, as well as the cultural milieu contributing to microcelebrity practices. Missing from the literature, however, is an explanation of how these popular microcelebrities reached their social media influencer status. Thus, through phenomenological interviews with 24 participants in multiple areas of the fitness sector, this study …

James Sicner's "Eternal Vigilance": An Illustrated Narrative To The World's Largest Photo-Collage Mural, Karl H. Kregor

Faculty Authored and Edited Books & CDs

In the Coates Library at Trinity University in San Antonio Texas, a remarkable work of art covers its central stairwell's outer and inner walls. It is the world’s largest photo-collage mural, encompassing c.1,400 square feet, and composed of hundreds of images, many of which are themselves composed of, and integrated with, other images. It was created by the artist, James Sicner.

This is a guide to that work. It is based on primary research conducted in 1991 and an examination of primary sources, texts, and illustrations located in Sicner’s home, conducted and transcribed two subsequent interviews with James’ sister Celeste …

Inscape

I don’t remember you.

I should, shouldn’t I? I should see you in my own reflection—in my eyes, my nose, my smile. Does it make me a bad sister, a bad twin, do you think? For not remembering those moments when it was just us two, when you were my world, and I yours? When in our own unborn existence, you were the one I knew better than myself?

Mormon Studies Review

There has been no shortage of books devoted to studying the intersections of religion and politics across US history. And the interest has cut across several scholarly fields: no more is religion the possession only or even predominantly of religious studies and anthropology, nor politics sequestered within the high and inward-looking walls of political science. Social history, a guild whose members once exuded a kind of deathly allergy to religion, has perhaps seen the greatest transformation; indeed, the field of history broadly speaking has experienced an unexpected gush of attention to religion and politics. Some of the historians new to …

Review: Steven C. Harper. First Vision: Memory And Mormon Origins. New York: Oxford University Press, 2019., Stephen C. Taysom

Mormon Studies Review

Steven C. Harper’s book First Vision: Memory and Mormon Origins is, if nothing else, perfectly titled. The book is like none other of the dozens written over the years about what Latter-day Saints call “the first vision.” To this point, authors interested enough to take up the subject have done so out of a variety of motives, which in turn have predictably produced an equally various collection of writings. The most common motives, of course, were, and remain, the apologetic and critical (what used to be known as the “anti-Mormon”). Harper demonstrates, with admirable lightness of touch, the fundamental, categorical …

Review: Elisa Eastwood Pulido. The Spiritual Evolution Of Margarito Bautista: Mexican Mormon Evangelizer, Polygamist Dissident, And Utopian Founder, 1878–1961. New York: Oxford University Press, 2020., Susie S. Porter

Mormon Studies Review

Margarito Bautista was born in 1878 in Atlautla, Mexico, a small farming community tucked into the folds of the Popocatépetl volcano in the state of Mexico. Even today, the community remains small, with fewer than thirty thousand people in 2010. Bautista’s father was a farmer and respected community member, serving at one time as municipal president. Elisa Eastwood Pulido provides no occupation for his mother, whom she describes as “pure Nahua” (50). Margarito Bautista converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1901, moved to the Mormon colonies in Northern Mexico, and became a volunteer evangelizer. His …

Review: Patrick Q. Mason. Mormonism And Violence: The Battles Of Zion. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2019., David J. Howlett

Mormon Studies Review

John Krakauer’s 2003 best-seller, Under the Banner of Heaven, played upon a common narrative told in sections of American culture— a story that claimed that some religions are inherently violent. In Krakauer’s work, of course, the group under consideration was Mormonism, and his narrative was encapsulated in his pithy subtitle, “A Story of Violent Faith.”1 Patrick Mason’s new book fundamentally contradicts Krakauer’s salacious claim. Mason argues that all religious groups, including the Mormon tradition, contain “multiple and complex sources—scriptures, histories, myths, social networks, authority structures, and cosmologies that can be mobilized in the service of either violence or non-violence” (78). …
