INTRODUCTION: Diabetes has risen to one of the top American public health concerns. The hyperglycemic state of chronic diabetes leads to microvascular and macrovascular changes that predispose patients to delayed wound healing and organ fibrosis. The validation of models to specifically detect early, quantifiable fibrotic changes seen in the diabetic state is of fundamental importance for understanding the diabetic pathophysiology and exploring earlier management options. Here, we investigated if we could detect early signs of internal fibrosis in a streptozotocin (STZ) diabetic mouse model by quantifying α-SMA expression in various organs using flow cytometry.

World Health Organization (WHO) grade 4 gliomas of the cerebellum are rare entities whose understanding trails that of their supratentorial counterparts. Like supratentorial high-grade gliomas (sHGG), cerebellar high-grade gliomas (cHGG) preferentially affect males and prognosis is bleak; however, they are more common in a younger population. While current therapy for cerebellar and supratentorial HGG is the same, recent molecular analyses have identified features and subclasses of cerebellar tumors that may merit individualized targeting. BACKGROUND: Bacteriophages (phages) are a promising anti-infective option for human disease. Major gaps remain in understanding their potential utility.

METHODS: This is a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study of a single dose of intravenous phage in approximately 72 clinically stable adult cystic fibrosis volunteers recruited from up to 20 US sites with Pseudomonas aeruginosa airway colonization. BACKGROUND: Vaccination of pregnant patients with tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) and influenza vaccine during influenza season can reduce maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality; nevertheless, vaccination rates remain suboptimal in this patient population. To investigate the effect of a brief educational counseling session on maternal Tdap and influenza vaccination and determine factors influencing women's decision in regards to receiving Tdap and or influenza vaccine during their pregnancy.

High metabolic activity is a hallmark of cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the molecular features of HCC with high metabolic activity contributing to clinical outcomes and the therapeutic implications of these characteristics are poorly understood. We aimed to define the features of HCC with high metabolic activity and uncover its association with response to current therapies. By integrating gene expression data from mouse liver tissues and tumor tissues from HCC patients (n = 1038), we uncovered three metabolically distinct HCC subtypes that differ in clinical outcomes and underlying molecular biology. This article attempts to analyze love as one of the major themes in Marguerite Duras’s The Lover and to examine the writing techniques she uses in her novel. The Lover captures the protagonist narrator’s memories of her life as a French turning 16 who lived in Vietnam during the colonial period. This research evaluates the adequacy of rainfall and irrigation for economic crop cultivation in Rayong province, Thailand, in 2013, 2016, 2018 and 2020. The methodology starts with an estimation of the water demand of 23 crop types at each growth stage, based on the FAO Penman-Monteith equation for crop evapotranspiration. Next, soil water balance was calculated on a monthly basis, given components of rainfall, soil water from the previous month, percolation from the plant root zone, and crop water uptake. This research examines the character “Moen” from Prapt’s detective novel “Nirat Mahannop” with reference to the concept of ecological conscience. Results show that Prapt deploys elements of fantasy to express Moen’s supernatural appearance and vocal power. This positions Moen as a voice on Thailand’s environmental problems from 2013 to 2015, relating to the oil spill that affected the country’s marine environment. Apart from that, Moen reflects powerful relationships between humans and the environment, capitalism and nature, in conjunction with the image of humans as an environmental threat.

Death And Memory: Content Analysis Of Narratives About Experiences Of Loss, Weena Wutthichamnong

The content of narratives can indicate which topics are imprinted on the memory of the narrator. This article examines narratives about experiences of loss using a content analysis approach. Data are from seventeen experiences-of-loss stories published in an e-book called “Rueang Lao Haeng Khwam Khop Khun” (Narrative of Gratitude). Findings reveal that there are twenty narrative topics that can be classified into five groups; situations before death, the last moment of the dead, situations after death, the narrator’s opinion, and blessings from the narrator. This article explores English-to-Thai translations of conceptual metaphors in skincare advertisements on websites. Through a quantitative and qualitative analysis of 120 skincare advertisements and their translations from eight brands collected from their official websites between 2019 and 2021, this study reveals the ten most common conceptual metaphors in skincare advertisements: war metaphors, health metaphors, human-being metaphors, plant and cultivation metaphors, light metaphors, textile and clothing metaphors, machine metaphors, food and nutrition metaphors, cleaning action metaphors, and container metaphors. This article examines the relationship between linguistic strategies and ideologies of superior honor and dignity in the automobile business. These relationships are identified using critical discourse analysis based on the three-dimensional framework of Fairclough (1995). Results show that the linguistic strategies used to construct these ideologies include lexical selection, presupposition, negation, claiming and reference. This discourse also indicates that while consumers may recognize the importance of cars, as an automobile business, profits are also important. As a result, automobile companies have constructed discourses to manipulate people to recognize that cars are not just vehicles, but indicators of social status that …

Dissolved oxygen depletion in the global ocean is well documented over several decades from the surface ocean to abyssal depths. This decline is especially prevalent in the Northeast Pacific. A significant decline in dissolved oxygen has been measured over 30 years at 4,000–4,100 m depth (Station M) beneath the California Current off central California. Three principal hypotheses examined the relationship of declining oxygen with biological and physical factors over the 30-year time series. Annual resolution revealed Ekman pumping, coastal upwelling, particulate matter flux, and sediment community oxygen consumption having significant correlations with bottom water dissolved oxygen concentration. BACKGROUND: Estimates by the World Health Organization indicate that over 800,000 global neonatal deaths each year are attributed to deviations from recommended best practices in infant feeding. Identifying factors promoting ideal breastfeeding practices may facilitate efforts to decrease neonatal and infant death rates and progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals set for 2030. Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) is regarded as an attractive cathode candidate of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries for its non-dissolution mechanism and effective alleviation of polysulfides shuttling issue in Li-S batteries, displaying high utilization of cathode active material, outstanding cycle stability and structural stability. However, the relation between cyclization degree and cycle stability of SPAN is still unveiled. In this work, SPAN-C-V composites were synthesized by co-introduction of CuSO₄ and zinc n-ethyl-n-phenyldithiocarbamate (ZDB) in the co-heating of sulfur and polyacrylonitrile. Background: The growing volume and heterogeneity of next-generation sequencing (NGS) data complicate the further optimization of identifying DNA variation, especially considering that curated high-confidence variant call sets frequently used to validate these methods are generally developed from the analysis of comparatively small and homogeneous sample sets.

Findings: We have developed xAtlas, a single-sample variant caller for single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) and small insertions and deletions (indels) in NGS data. xAtlas features rapid runtimes, support for CRAM and gVCF file formats, and retraining capabilities. xAtlas reports SNVs with 99.11% recall and 98.43% precision across a reference HG002 sample at 60× whole-genome coverage …

Numerous pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions are available for the prevention and treatment of postpartum depression. To date, no attempt has been made to synthesize the evidence from comparisons of interventions both within and across these categories.
