Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Each year, about 14,000 Chicago Public Schools (CPS) students graduate with one year of high school computer science (CS) in fulfillment of the district’s CS graduation requirement. This accomplishment was the culmination of a decade of work by the Chicago Alliance for Equity in Computer Science (CAFÉCS), which includes CPS teachers and administrators, university CS faculty, and educational researchers. CAFÉCS research indicates that CPS significantly increased the capacity of schools to offer the Exploring Computer Science (ECS) introductory course, resulting in a rapid, equitable increase in students’ participation in CS. Making CS mandatory did not negatively impact performance in ECS. …

Color Resolved Cherenkov Imaging Allows For Differential Signal Detection In Blood And Melanin Content, Vihan A. Wickramasinghe Dec 2022

Color Resolved Cherenkov Imaging Allows For Differential Signal Detection In Blood And Melanin Content, Vihan A. Wickramasinghe

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Cherenkov imaging in radiation therapy allows a video display of the irradiation beam on the patient’s tissue, for visualization of the treatment. High energy radiation from a linear accelerator (Linac) results in the production of spectrally-continuous broadband light inside tissue due to the Cherenkov effect; this light is then attenuated by tissue features from transport and exits from the delivery site. Progress with the development of color Cherenkov imaging has opened the possibility for some level of spectroscopic imaging of the light-tissue interaction and interpretation of the specific nature of the tissue being irradiated. Generally, there is a linear relationship …

Characterizing Climb And Propeller Performance For A Fixed Pitch, Single-Engine, Electric Aircraft, Austin Lawrence Andwan

Theses and Dissertations

Electric aircraft are on the horizon. Both industry and regulators have an abundance of flight tests ahead to ensure safe operation of these new aircraft. Conventional performance standards regaurding edurance, climb performance and cruise conditions are largely not applicable to assessing an electrically propulsed aircraft. While battery technologies are the current barrier for electric aircraft, there also hasn’t been much flight testing to reveal their unique performance trends. This experiment focus’s on characterizing some of these performance trends obtained through a level flight and climb test in the Pipistrel Velis Electro. The rate-of-climb did not exhibit a decrease when the …

Theses and Dissertations

This document finds the stability and control affects of electric powerplant conversion on a pre-existing internal combustion powered Pipistrel Virus SW through comparison with the Pipistrel Velis Electro. Testing included analysis of both static and dynamic stability on the longitudinal and lateral-directional axes of the airplane. Due to the light sport airplane being used in testing, some of the intedended tests were unable to be performed, however, conclusions were still capable of being made. The primary conclusion is that electric conversion of an airframe has no significant negative consequences, with the airplane still exhibiting positive stability on all three axes. …

Every day in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during school days, more than 1,000,000 students are transported throughout the country by more than 15,000 school buses. Everything is dependent on the human element. During school transportation around the world, many children are forgotten inside the school bus and with many of them eventually going missing or even dying. The bus driver is usually busy and tired due to the focus on the road, which may make him lose focus on those on …

Addressing Mexico City’S Water Crisis Via Wastewater Reclamation In The Mezquital Valley, Holden Nicholas Moore, Duncan Drapeau Dec 2022

Addressing Mexico City’S Water Crisis Via Wastewater Reclamation In The Mezquital Valley, Holden Nicholas Moore, Duncan Drapeau

Sustainability and Social Justice

Urbanization and climate change are resulting in extensive water scarcity across the globe. Mexico City is a prime example of this relationship. Due to neoliberal water policy reform and exponential urbanization along with inadequate water infrastructure and wastewater management systems, Mexico City is already experiencing issues in terms of water quality and equitable distribution. Climate change is projected to exacerbate these issues due to increasing temperatures and changes in annual precipitation trends resulting in water becoming more scarce or even hazardous through droughts and flooding events. For there to be effective adaptation methods, factors that result in vulnerability need to …

Braiding Properties Of Worldline Configurations In Hardcore Lattice Bosons, Fabio Lingua, Wei Wang, Liana Shpani, Barbara Capogrosso-Sansone Dec 2022

Braiding Properties Of Worldline Configurations In Hardcore Lattice Bosons, Fabio Lingua, Wei Wang, Liana Shpani, Barbara Capogrosso-Sansone

Physics

In this manuscript, we study braiding properties of worldline configurations for a variety of ground-states of hardcore Bose–Hubbard models in two dimensions. Configurations are collections of particle paths and result from the path-integral formulation of statistical mechanics. For hard-core bosons, configurations can be seen as geometric braids and therefore can be assigned a certain topological structure, i.e. a way to classify braiding events among worldlines. By means of Monte Carlo calculations, we study superfluid phase and a variety of insulating phases and observe that ground-states of different quantum phases correspond to different probability distributions of braiding properties.

Biomolecular Effects Of Dance And Dance/Movement Therapy: A Review, Ivana Lopez-Nieves, Charles E. Jakobsche

Chemistry

The positive health impacts of dance and dance/movement therapy can be seen all the way down to the molecular level. This narrative-style review illustrates this connection by presenting a collection of clinical and preclinical studies that evaluate the effects of dance activities on hormones and other small-molecule metabolites within the human body. The results of these studies show that dance activities can increase levels of nitric oxide, serotonin, estrogen hormones, and HDL cholesterol, while they can decrease levels of dopamine, serum glucose, serum triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol. Levels of cortisol can either be increased or decreased, depending on the type …

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (FAW), first invaded Africa in 2016 and has since become established in many areas across the continent where it poses a serious threat to food and nutrition security. We re-parameterized the existing CLIMEX model to assess the FAW global invasion threat, emphasizing the risk of transient and permanent population establishment in Africa under current and projected future climates, considering irrigation patterns. FAW can establish itself in almost all countries in eastern and central Africa and a large part of western Africa under the current climate. Climatic barriers, such as heat and dry stresses, may limit …
