Ancient Andean Archipelagos: Human Interaction And Social Innovation At Chawin Punta And Kunturay In The East-Central Highlands Of Pasco, Peru, Nicholas E. Brown

This dissertation studies the dynamic relationship between interaction and innovation in ancient Peru, where archipelagos of social movement developed among groups of people living in distant regions of the Central Andes and Amazon. The earliest development of these archipelagic societies can be traced to the rise of the Chavín phenomenon in the 2nd and 1st millennia B.C.E., when monumental platforms and plazas were built across the Andes to accommodate large gatherings of people for new kinds of civic and ceremonial events. Metabolic abnormalities – including overweight/obesity, glucose dysregulation and insulin resistance (IR) – are an emerging health concern in military Veterans of the United States (US) who served since the 2001 terrorist attacks (post-9/11 Veterans). There are unique risk factors for overweight/obesity in this young Veteran population, including military-service related exposures (such as blast exposure [BE] and combat trauma), changes in lifestyle after military service, and the presence of psychological (e.g., posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD] and mood disorders) or somatic (e.g., sleep disorders and pain) conditions that can impact metabolic health overtime. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have exceptional electronic properties that give rise to promising use as sensors, interconnects, and semiconductor materials. However, functionalizing carbon nanotubes with covalent modifications to enable sensing applications, or selecting desirable semiconductive tubes via liquid treatment, both dominates the environmental impact of CNTs and suffers limitations in control and product quality. In this thesis, I explored alternative approaches to functionalization and chirality direction that leverage exotic gas-phase precursors or vapor-phase treatments. It is not uncommon to have dreams with familiar characters who appear to exhibit independent agency and personhood, whether the actual persons are alive or dead. Discerning the ontological nature of dream characters presents a challenge in contemporary dreamwork, especially if one wishes to adopt an inclusive approach that allows for dream characters to be derived from intrapsychic or transpersonal sources. An inclusive model avoids two possible errors inherent in an either-or approach: 1) Believing that a dream character is a “real” person, a dreamer may disavow ownership over unacknowledged or rejected aspects of self; or, 2) Believing that the …

The right to a fair trial is not just protected by a state’s domestic statute but also by international law under the 1949 Geneva Convention. In the most basic sense, a fair trial theoretically requires competent courts, penalty proportionality, proper notification, right of defense, right of appeal, and restrictions on the issuance of the death penalty. However, the requirements set by international law often fail to account for the desire of justice that may diminish the true fairness of a trial even though all requirements are present. Since about 2008, the rise of autocracy and the decline of democracy has threatened the modern liberal international order. To counter the threat of authoritarian international law, the United States should collaborate with liberal democracies from Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America to develop new plurilateral institutions and treaties to create a “liberal plurilateral order.” This Essay shows that states are planting the seeds of a future liberal plurilateral order in their response to Russian aggression in Ukraine.

Political scientists increasingly use supervised machine learning to code multiple relevant labels from a single set of texts. The current “best practice” of individually applying supervised machine learning to each label ignores information on inter-label association(s), and is likely to under-perform as a result. We introduce multi-label prediction as a solution to this problem. After reviewing the multi-label prediction framework, we apply it to code multiple features of (i) access to information requests made to the Mexican government and (ii) country-year human rights reports. When United States commanders want to attack lawful targets, they must decide if the attack is proportional under the Law of Armed Conflict ("LOAC'). The attack cannot cause excessive harm to civilians compared to the strike's military benefit. To help commanders decide if the strike is proportional, intelligence analysts forecast the number of men, women, and children who may be injured or killed as collateral damage. Yet because civilians are not equal for the purpose of targeting, commanders have no viable standard for evaluating the limited, homogenous data they receive on civilians. Outer space, long the province of peaceful competition and international cooperation, is being rapidly militarized. We stand today at a rare inflection point in history that deserves careful thought as humanity moves forward. In short, we face the following choice: we can either protect and build on the special nature of space norms and customs to preserve space as a “laboratory of peace,” or we can militarize space as the new “highest ground” under largely the same rules that govern terrestrial warfare. Alankrita Shrivastava is a filmmaker in Bollywood whose sensibilities as a feminist auteur have been prominent in her work since her very first film. Her oeuvre consists of three feature films (Turning 30, 2011; Lipstick Under My Burkha, 2017; Dolly, Kitty Aur Who Chamakte Sitaare, 2020), a short anthology film (My Beautiful Wrinkles, 2020), the Amazon Prime series Made in Heaven (2019), and the Netflix Series, Bombay Begums (2021). She wrote and directed all her films and collaborated with other female writers and directors for the Amazon Prime and Netflix series.

In the modern United States, the military is respected and honored by the public and military leaders alike. However, during the American Revolution, society was not yet convinced that having a standing army was necessary or beneficial to the Republic. The Continental Army was heavily contested during the war and conflicted with the civilians and its commanders alike. This paper follows the trend of other social histories by investigating just how these conflicts played out and how the common soldier navigated them.

Accurate characterization of fragment fly-out properties from high-speed warhead detonations is essential for estimation of collateral damage and lethality for a given weapon. Real warhead dynamic detonation tests are rare, costly, and often unrealizable with current technology, leaving fragmentation experiments limited to static arena tests and numerical simulations. Stereoscopic imaging techniques can now provide static arena tests with time-dependent tracks of individual fragments, each with characteristics such as fragment IDs and their respective position vector. Simulation methods can account for the dynamic case but can exclude relevant dynamics experienced in real-life warhead detonations. This research leverages machine learning methodologies to …

This is an analysis of three pieces that contribute to solo violin and string quartet repertoire through the lens of intervallic relationships, rhythmic and gestural motifs, and instrumental technique. Briefly delving into the Aboriginal history of Taiwan and illuminating aural concepts inherent within each tribe, the research blends musicological research, theoretical analysis, and intuitive performance-based interpretations to meld and expand the technical and musical possibilities of the violin with the essence and impact of these songs.

Historically, common property is one of the dominant forms of ownership through which natural resources-e.g., forests, pastures, and fisheries-are managed. However, their decline across societies due to marketization and privatization has prompted intense debates. This Article seeks to answer the following questions: (1) Why did some common property regimes dissipate quickly, while others resisted the forces of privatization for generations? (2) What explains the divergent trajectories that societies took in governing common resources? When the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) commissioned its first Type 075 class Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) in April 2021, it represented an important advance in power projection capability for China’s maritime forces. For the first time, the PLAN had an amphibious warship capable of hosting significant rotary wing forces while acting as the flagship for an amphibious task force. Now with three Type 075 class ships either in or soon to be in service, the PLAN has expanded its amphibious capability even further. The City-Sin: Collective Responsibility For The Plague In Early Modern London, Andrew Fleck

The epidemic of bubonic plague that struck London in 1603 created its own culture of collectivity. Instead of seeking to place blame on others, the writers responding to the epidemic understood the disease to be divine punishment and a call to collective moral reform. Analyzing the plague pamphlets of Thomas Dekker, William Muggins, Thomas Middleton, and a Dutch refugee residing in London, Jacob Cool, this article argues that the focus on personal moral responsibility for the plague and the need for collective reform created an unexpected culture of collectivity in early modern London.

On May 24, 2022, the Washington Post carried front-page news that a court in Ukraine had sentenced a 21-year-old Russian soldier, Vadim Shishimarin, to life imprisonment for the war crime of premeditated murder of a civilian, 62-year-old Oleksandr Shelipov. The session was the first war crimes trial in Ukraine since Russia's invasion three months earlier.
