Conner's James Montgomery: Abolitionist Warrior is, as reviewer John Daley notes, only the second full-length biography of Montgomery, the “least known or written about of those inconvenient heroes” who killed proslavery forces in prewar Kansas. “Conner’s stated mission in this more broadly focused work is to help the reader understand rather than forgive,” Daley writes. He concludes that, “In this [Conner] succeeds.”

Historians have long focused on violence’s permeation of the postwar South. However, in The War After the War: A New History of Reconstruction, John Patrick Daly argues that the violence was so elemental to, so pervasive and organized in the postbellum South that it constituted a new war—a Southern Civil War. Reviewer Xiaoxiao Li writes that Daly’s “lively military history” reveals that White southerners waged a war of violent terror to control the former-Confederate states’ governments. Further, Daly finds resonances between the war after the war in the U.S. and the aftermath of other civil wars in world history.

The United States government attempted to eliminate Native Americans through outright physical extermination and later by the eradication of Indian identity through a boarding school system and other "paper genocide" mechanisms. One of those mechanisms is the recognition of some Natives but not the majority, including those who ancestors were enslaved. The assistance provided to recognized tribes by the government is inadequate to compensate for the historical and continuing suffering these people endure. And yet the problem is compounded for those unrecognized Natives whose ancestors were enslaved and whose tribal identity was erased. They are subjected to a double-barreled discrimination. …

งานวิจัยชิ้นนี้ศึกษาความแตกต่างของความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างรัฐกับมุสลิมชนกลุ่มน้อยในประเทศเมียนมาและไทย โดยใช้กรณีของโรฮีนจาในรัฐยะไข่เทียบเคียงกับกรณีของมลายูมุสลิมในจังหวัดชายแดนใต้ แม้ว่าเมียนมาและไทยเป็นประเทศที่มีผู้นับถือศาสนาพุทธนิกายเถรวาทเป็นชนส่วนใหญ่ แต่ผลลัพธ์ของความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างรัฐและมุสลิมชนกลุ่มน้อยของทั้งสองประเทศก็มีความแตกต่างกันอย่างชัดเจน กล่าวคือ ในกรณีของโรฮีนจาปรากฏความรุนแรงสุดโต่ง ส่วนในกรณีของมลายูมุสลิมเกิดความรุนแรงต่ำที่กระทำโดยรัฐ นัยยะของการเทียบเคียงของทั้งสองกรณีคือการค้นหาปัจจัยที่ทำให้เกิดและไม่เกิดความรุนแรงที่กระทำโดยรัฐต่อชนกลุ่มน้อยมุสลิม ผลการศึกษาพบว่าปัจจัยสำคัญที่ทำให้ทั้งสองกรณีแตกต่างกันคือ ‘เงื่อนไขไตรลักษณ์’ ซึ่งประกอบด้วยมุมมองของรัฐต่อมุสลิมชนกลุ่มน้อย อิทธิพลของขบวนการพุทธชาตินิยม และความอ่อนแอของมุสลิมชนกลุ่มน้อย ฉะนั้น เมื่อรัฐมีมุมมองที่ปิดกั้นต่อชนกลุ่มน้อยประกอบกับขบวนการพุทธชาตินิยมมีอิทธิพลสูงและสถานะของมุสลิมชนกลุ่มน้อยมีความอ่อนแอแล้ว โอกาสที่จะเกิดการใช้ความรุนแรงสุดโต่งก็มีสูงตามไปด้วย ด้วยเหตุนี้ ผู้วิจัยเสนอว่าการปรากฏหรือไม่ปรากฏของเงื่อนไขไตรลักษณ์สามารถใช้เป็นเครื่องมือในการเฝ้าระวังการใช้ความรุนแรงสุดโต่งที่กระทำโดยรัฐต่อมลายูมุสลิมในประเทศไทย และต่อชนกลุ่มน้อยทางศาสนาและชาติพันธุ์ในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้

บทความเรื่องนี้ศึกษาปัญหาอาชญากรรมลูกผสมที่เป็นปัญหาสำคัญในสังคมไทย โดยวิเคราะห์ปัญหาจากการสังเคราะห์เอกสาร พบว่าปัญหาอาชญากรรมในสังคมไทยในศตวรรษที่ 21 ถูกปรับเปลี่ยนจากการเป็นรูปแบบเดี่ยวมาเป็น “อาชญากรรมลูกผสม” ซึ่งเป็นการผสมผสานกันระหว่างอาชญากรรมรูปแบบต่าง ๆ ทั้งอาชญากรรมรูปแบบเดิม อาชญากรรมรูปแบบใหม่ อาชญากรรมรูปแบบอื่น ๆ และที่อาจจะเกิดขึ้นในอนาคต ทำให้เป็นอาชญากรรมแบบเบ็ดเสร็จ มีความซับซ้อน เชื่อมโยงสาเหตุจากปัจจัยการเปลี่ยนแปลงสังคมโดยเทคโนโลยี ปัจจัยด้านสภาพแวดล้อมทางสังคมในระดับมหภาค ปัจจัยด้านสภาพแวดล้อมทางสังคมในระดับจุลภาค ปัจจัยด้านกายภาพ/ชีวภาพ และปัจจัยด้านจิตวิทยา ที่ประสานสอดคล้องกับวิธีการก่ออาชญากรรม ทำให้ไม่สามารถเข้าใจรูปแบบที่แท้จริงของอาชญากรรมที่เกิดขึ้นได้โดยง่าย นอกจากนี้แล้วอาชญากรรมลูกผสมจะแตกต่างกันขึ้นอยู่กับอาชญากรผู้วางแผนเพื่อให้บรรลุเป้าหมายของการก่ออาชญากรรมนั้น โดยมีลักษณะสำคัญ ได้แก่ ผู้กระทำผิดหรืออาชญากรมีการรวมตัวกันเป็นเครือข่าย/องค์กรมากขึ้น กระทำการข้ามรัฐ/ไร้พรมแดน พึ่งพาเทคโนโลยี และใช้วิธีการที่หลากหลายซึ่งส่งผลกระทบในวงกว้าง ไม่จำกัดช่วงเวลาและสถานที่ สร้างการเลียนแบบ เข้าถึงเป้าหมายได้ง่าย ไม่จำเป็นต้องเผชิญหน้ากับเป้าหมาย คุ้มค่ามากที่สุดในการก่อเหตุต่อครั้ง เกี่ยวข้องกับการใช้ชีวิตประจำวัน ติดตามตัวผู้กระทำผิดมาลงโทษได้ยาก ทำให้ต้องใช้บุคลากรและงบประมาณจำนวนมากในการปราบปราม ป้องกันและแก้ไข

This thesis explores the ways that the nonprofit Native Seeds/SEARCH, of Tucson, Arizona interfaces with Indigenous communities and the local seed and food systems in the Southwest United States. The thesis argues that Native seed and food sovereignty have different meanings for different Indigenous people, and that nonprofits working with Indigenous communities need to consider input from them when deciding how to catalogue, regenerate and sustain healthy grow outs for the future, especially in the light of climate change and drought.

Historians have debated the role of stereotypes and hostile language in the diversion of the Fourth Crusade to Constantinople mostly through the outdated "Clash of Civilizations" lens. This work investigates the role of hostile stereotypes in both Western and Byzantine narrative histories discussing the first four crusades through a deep textual and literary analysis. This work argues that contemporary narrative histories from the first four crusades demonstrate that virulently hostile attitudes abounded in both Byzantine and Western sources, and that these attitudes greatly affected diplomatic and political decision making during Byzantine-Crusader interactions from 1096-1204. In this study, we examined the interplay between protein intrinsic disorder, hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, and signaling pathways induced by Toll-like receptors (TLRs). To this end, 10 HCV proteins, 10 human TLRs, and 41 proteins from the TLR-induced downstream pathways were considered from the prevalence of intrinsic disorder. Mapping of the intrinsic disorder to the HCV-TLR interactome and to the TLR-based pathways of human innate immune response to the HCV infection demonstrates that substantial levels of intrinsic disorder are characteristic for proteins involved in the regulation and execution of these innate immunity pathways and in HCV-TLR interaction. Transnational rhetorical scholarship has yet to enact solidarity with the subaltern. “Inclusionary” efforts have actively excluded what I term the “radical subject,” the subject revolting against repressive hegemonic forces to achieve liberatory change in society. As an intervention, this dissertation conceptualizes the Syrian revolution as a rhetorical performance which enacts a theory of its own agency and possibilities, an expression of a liberatory moment where radical subjects rose from under an authoritarian regime’s historic rule. Adherence of complex bacterial biofilm communities to burned tissue creates a challenge for treatment, with infection causing 51% of burn victim deaths. This study evaluated release of therapeutics from wound care biomaterials and their antimicrobial activity against pathogens Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Electrospun chitosan membranes (ESCMs) were fabricated and acylated with chain lengths ranging from 6-10 carbons then loaded with anti-biofilm cis-2-decenoic acid (C2DA) (0.15 mg/membrane with average weight of 4.68 mg) and local anesthetic bupivacaine (0.5 mg/membrane). Egyptian New Kingdom triumph scenes, perhaps one of the most recognizable motifs in Egyptian art, adorned the exteriors of temple complexes and depicted the king smiting his enemies and receiving lines of bound toponyms representing subjugated foreign peoples and places. The research established a common definition of parent engagement as an intentional active work parents and schools undertake together to support student achievement.
