In this thesis, I address the lack of professional development and the absence of resources provided for student affairs professionals. By utilizing critical action research, I propose an intervention of creating a professional development mandate for all student affairs professionals called the Sadie Alexander Project. The Sadie Alexander Project uses holistic and collaborative division efforts with a focus on supporting and advocating for student affairs professionals. How does the political environment that a group operates affect whether they engage in terrorism? My research is concerned with how political opportunities, which I conceptualize in terms of political decentralization, affect how groups engage with the state, and whether they will engage in terrorism. Previous research has indicated that decentralization can reduce violence but can pose stability problems in other countries. I hypothesize that states with higher levels of decentralization will have lower levels of violence. I believe this works by allowing minority groups more access to power. Because they have access to political power, there is less incentive …

Sharp force trauma (SFT) is a mechanism of traumatic injury in which a tool with a pointed or slanted edge impacts the skin and/or bone, producing a penetrating cut mark. Current assessment of forensic and bioarchaeological contexts typically focuses on evaluating and interpreting traumatic injuries to bone due to cutting and stabbing using small, bladed tools, primarily knives and saws. Minimal research focuses on the damage inflicted by a larger class of chopping/hacking tools. When Native Hawaiians and haole (foreigners) first met, both participants belonged to fashion systems unknown to the other, composed of different materials, styles, tastes, standards, and construction techniques. As the outside world was introduced to the cultural heritage of Hawaiian hulu manu (featherwork), kūkaulani (chiefly fashion), and European skewed conceptions of Hawaiian indigeneity; the ali‘i (chiefs) and kama‘āina (commoners) received and adapted to incoming materials, technologies, and information. When these encounters transitioned into “prolonged contact” and settlement, dress and adornment proliferated in new ways. Hydrochloric acid (HCl) exposure causes asthma-like conditions, reactive airways dysfunction syndrome, and pulmonary fibrosis. Heat Shock Protein 90 (HSP90) is a molecular chaperone that regulates multiple cellular processes. HSP90 inhibitors are undergoing clinical trials for cancer and are also being studied in various pre-clinical settings for their anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects. Here we investigated the ability of the heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) inhibitor AT13387 to prevent chronic lung injury induced by exposure to HCl in vivo and its protective role in the endothelial barrier in vitro. Contrary to popular belief, this paper argues that cyber whistleblowing can contribute to a greater cyber security posture. However, this requires the development of clearer legal obligations and protections for cyber whistleblowers. This paper will explore the psychology behind whistleblowing, the effectiveness of whistleblowing in a cybersecurity context, how to create a safer and more transparent environment for whistleblowers and companies, and how current laws contribute to cyber whistleblowing.

Harry E. Miller was a self-styled historian, writer, lecturer, archeologist, sideshow impresario, zookeeper, and Route 66 curio shop owner who spent most of his adult life promoting himself as an Apache known as Indian Miller, Chief Crazy Thunder. Miller insisted on his Native American heritage despite the fact that he was born to a European-American family of pioneers, and for most of the early twentieth century, his audiences and customers apparently accepted the ruse. Privately owned water is the primary source of drinking water for 43 million Americans. Although residential or private wells are susceptible to a variety of contaminants, the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974 positions individuals as responsible for the testing, remediation, and management of this water. Despite the elevated presence of arsenic in Maine, which is linked to various cancers, cardiovascular disease, and neurological damage, little is known about how private well owners perceive the safety and quality of their own water.

This study focuses on the stabilization and revitalization of two Historic Districts, in the City of Hopewell, Virginia. With artists as first stage revitalizers, an emphasis was put on bringing the arts to the area. Four vacant buildings in these districts were reinvented rather than removed. Three of the buildings are located in close proximity in the historic neighborhood of City Point. These vacant buildings, a church, a school, and a tavern, are destabilizing factors in a residential area. Focus was placed on the repurposing and modernization of the three buildings for today’s living, as artists' homes. Reuse of the …

As the number of available cybersecurity jobs continues to grow, colleges strive to offer to their cybersecurity students an environment which will make them sufficiently prepared to enter the workforce after graduation. This paper explores the academic and professional needs of STEM-students in various higher education institutions across Virginia and how cybersecurity programs can cater to these needs. It also seeks to propose an evidence-based approach for improving the existing cybersecurity programs so that they can become more inclusive and student-ready. At present, the main catalysts used in the synthesis of PET are antimony, titanium, and aluminum metal compounds. Among them, antimony-based catalysts are poisonous and the titanium-based catalyst products are relatively yellow in hue. การศึกษาเรื่อง ผู้ก่อการร้ายหญิง : ปัญหาและแนวทางการแก้ไข เป็นการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษามูลเหตุ จูงใจ บทบาท และกระบวนการในการที่ผู้หญิงเข้าไปมีส่วนร่วมในการก่อการร้าย ตลอดจนแสวงหาแนวทางในการป้องกันและแก้ไขปัญหา ผลจากการวิจัยพบว่า มูลเหตุจูงใจในการก่อการร้ายของผู้หญิงสามารถแบ่งเป็นสองส่วนหลัก ได้แก่ ส่วนที่เป็นปัจจัยดึงดูด อันเป็นปัจจัยจากฝั่งกลุ่มก่อการร้าย ได้แก่ กระบวนการชักชวนและจัดหาที่มีประสิทธิภาพ ประกอบกับความมีบารมีและความดึงดูดของผู้นำกลุ่มก่อการร้ายและส่วนที่เป็นปัจจัยผลักดัน อันเป็นปัจจัยที่มาจากแรงกระตุ้นของฝั่งผู้หญิงเอง ได้แก่ อารมณ์ส่วนตัว ศาสนา และการเมือง จนนำไปสู่การเข้าสู่กระบวนการโดยสมัครใจเพื่อไปมีส่วนร่วมในการก่อการร้าย โดยในต่างประเทศผู้หญิงมีทั้งบทบาทหลักในการก่อเหตุ และบทบาทสนับสนุน อาทิ การทำหน้าที่เป็นแม่ ภรรยา และจัดหาสมาชิก เป็นต้น ซึ่งมักถูกชักจูงผ่านช่องทางออนไลน์เป็นหลัก ขณะที่บางส่วนที่ไม่สมัครใจก็จะตกเป็นเหยื่อเพื่อแสวงประโยชน์ของกลุ่มก่อการร้าย ในส่วนของประเทศไทยนั้น การก่อการร้ายถูกชี้นำไปในพื้นที่จังหวัดชายแดนภาคใต้ ซึ่งผู้หญิงจะมีบทบาทในการสนับสนุนกลุ่มก่อความไม่สงบ อาทิ การทำหน้าที่ปฐมพยาบาล และการหารายได้ เป็นต้น โดยถูกชักจูงจากคนในครอบครัวและคนใกล้ตัว ประกอบกับการซึมซับข้อมูลและเรื่องเล่าต่าง ๆ ผ่านประสบการณ์จากการอาศัยอยู่ในพื้นที่เป็นเวลานาน และเนื่องจากผู้หญิงเข้าไปมีส่วนร่วมในการก่อการร้ายในบทบาทต่าง ๆ อันเป็นฟันเฟืองหนึ่งที่ขับเคลื่อนให้เกิดการก่อการร้ายในหลายพื้นที่ทั่วโลก ประชาคมระหว่างประเทศรวมทั้งประเทศไทยจึงได้มีการกำหนดนโยบายที่เกี่ยวข้องในการต่อต้านการก่อการร้ายทั้งในภาพรวมและในมิติของผู้หญิงในการก่อการร้ายเป็นการเฉพาะ อย่างไรก็ดี ยังพบว่าหลายประเทศทั่วโลกยังคงเผชิญกับภัยคุกคามจากการก่อการร้ายจวบจนปัจจุบัน เช่นเดียวกับประเทศไทยที่ปัญหาการก่อความไม่สงบในจังหวัดชายแดนภาคใต้ยังคงดำเนินต่อเนื่องเรื่อยมาหลายทศวรรษ ผู้วิจัยจึงได้เสนอแนะให้มีการปรับปรุงนโยบาย การเพิ่มมาตรการป้องกันในระดับปฏิบัติ ตลอดจนการนำทฤษฎีทางอาชญาวิทยาและแนวทางการป้องกันจากต่างประเทศที่ได้ศึกษาไว้ มาเป็นกรอบในการจัดทำแนวทางในการป้องกันและแก้ไขทั้งในระดับนโยบายและระดับปฏิบัติการที่สอดคล้องกับบริบทของไทย

This is what has been at the root of their survival against the anti-Blackness and heterosexism that permeates the nation. The Page Act of 1875 excluded Asian women immigrants from entering the United States, presuming they were prostitutes. This presumption was tragically replicated in the 2021 Atlanta Massacre of six Asian and Asian American women, reinforcing the same harmful prejudices. This Article seeks to illuminate how the Atlanta Massacre is symbolic of larger forms of discrimination, including the harms of decitizenship. These harms include limited access to full citizenship rights due to legal barriers, restricted cultural and political power, and a lack of belonging. Since the founding of the United States, the U.S. Government has dealt with national security threats, both external and internal. While there are federal laws in place to protect the nation against external actors, these instruments cannot be turned directly inward to address the rising threat of domestic terrorism. This Comment explains the issues with that approach and concludes by proposing specific solutions, focusing on the need for a coordinated response from the agencies and departments tasked with the investigation, intelligence, and prevention of domestic violent extremism and terrorism.

Beginning in 2012, South Africa decided to unilaterally terminate many Bilateral Investment Treaties (BITs) with European countries—this represented a departure from the 1990s, where South Africa, like many other developing countries, entered into BITs with wealthy, capital-exporting states in the hopes of attracting foreign direct investment. In 2015, South Africa enacted, in place of the BITs, the Protection of Investment Act, designed to protect foreign investors while also providing the state more freedom to regulate in the public interest. This study presents an overview and analysis of refugee entrepreneurship in the United States' Mid-Atlantic region for refugee entrepreneurship by interviewing three refugee entrepreneurs and two professional individuals who actively work with refugee entrepreneurs. Joseph Beilein Jr. reviewed Lorien Foote’s Rites of Retaliation: Civilization, Soldiers, and Campaigns in the American Civil War, and came away from reading it convinced it is a “well-executed contribution to Civil War history.” Foote shows that both U.S. and Confederate leaders tried to wage a war based on commonly held concepts of civilization and honor. Still, both sides often diverted from their civilized, honor-bound scheme, and behaved in decidedly uncivilized and dishonorable ways. Beilein writes that “This is a great book” that will appeal to a diverse audience.

Yarbough’s Choctaw Confederates: The American Civil War in Indian Country, excels in demonstrating that Choctaws’ decision to align with the Confederacy was based on self-interests. Indeed, Yarbough shows that “increasingly close interaction with white Americans shifted Choctaw culture” in the antebellum era, so that by the eve of the Civil War, they were, in many ways, “’more ‘southern’” than many white southerners. Elliott finishes by praising Yarbough’s work as an “immensely valuable and illuminating” work.
