Technology is so much more than a prosthetic. But how much more? And what else is it? In the legal realm, its role is not yet clear. Such a lack of elucidation becomes problematic, especially when technology has the ability to convert assumptions into facts, and it takes on a truth-making, rather than a mere truth-revealing mission. This Article argues that it is problematic to enable technology to stand in for reflective thinking, and calls attention to the fact that evidentiary rules enable technology to decide what can be proven, ergo what truth is.

This Article contends that an informed discussion on an Al Bill of Rights requires grappling with biometric data collection and its integration into emerging Al systems. Biometric Al systems serve a wide range of governmental purposes, including policing, border security and immigration enforcement, and biometric cyberintelligence and biometric-enabled warfare. These systems are increasingly categorized as "high-risk" when deployed in ways that may impact fundamental constitutional rights and human rights. There is growing recognition that high-risk biometric AI systems, such as facial recognition identification, can pose unprecedented challenges to criminal procedure rights. The information and propaganda activities of the US Information Agency (USIA) in South Korea from 1945 to 1960 accelerated the global dominance of the American film industry in an effort to combat communism. Succeeding the US Information Service (USIS) in Korea in the aftermath of the Pacific War, USIA did its work with the explicit approval of the US Congress and the Eisenhower administration: USIS collaborated with the US military and cooperated with the US film industry to produce, distribute, and exhibit commercial and noncommercial pro-American motion pictures. McCracken Fisher to head an office in Chongqing, the Nationalist (Guomindang) capital in the War of Resistance Against Japan (1937-1945). This Article identifies and explores a transparency guarantee that permeates the Constitution's criminal procedure provisions. This guarantee protects multiple dimensions of transparency - which I categorize as participatory, informational, and corporal--through overlapping structural safeguards and individual rights, and through protections afforded to both the public and the accused. Despite the strength and pervasiveness of the overarching transparency guarantee, the discrete provisions from which it is derived are often peripheral in today's criminal justice system, which is dominated by plea bargaining and incarceration rather than trials and public-square punishment. The COVID-19 pandemic and racial reckoning of 2020-2021 have led many faculty in higher education to see the profession and their place in it in a new light (Walton, 2022). While people are broadly engaged in a large-scale cultural re-evaluation of work, labor conditions, and equity, this awakening has posed an existential threat to many academics’ senses of identity, purpose, and community. In this essay, we address Boyle’s A Friend of the Earth (2000) and Atwood’s Oryx and Crake (2003) as climate fiction that plays out equally devastating yet realistic futuristic scenarios. In creative thought experiments, science fiction helps us to recognize humans as a collective force, a force that conquers, shapes, destroys, and rebuilds the planet in pre- and post-apocalyptic bouts not unlike the pre- and post-pandemic times we are now experiencing. Our focus on these two science fiction novels is on the intersectionality of emergent environments, extinctions, and diseases within the framework of climate change.

This research is based mainly on the Maritime Customs Decennial Report (1892-1901) to scrutinize the circumstances and development of Hankow, a typical Chinese port, in the Age of Imperialism. This essay argues that the western powers did not merely exploit the Chinese resources in the Age of Imperialism, but came hand in hand with capital, goods, and scientific knowledge, which facilitated trades and introduced technologies to China. This transformed Hankow into a global emporium with not only new constructions but also metropolitan characteristics. To this end, imperialism and modernization co-existed.

Proclaim Peace is the first full-length volume discussing nonviolent theology in Latter-day Saint thought. It seeks to provide a new understanding of Restoration texts that aligns Mormon thought with modern pacifist traditions. Unfortunately, the book suffers from methodology issues that include an overly creative reading of some scriptures to support pacifist theories and the minimization of others’ theories. The book fails to interact with just-war ethics in meaningful ways that could enhance their ethic of peace. As a result, the book is longer than other pacifist texts but suffers from the same problems as previous entries in talking past those …

Making Waves: Blackness And Transnational Racialized Self-Fashioning By South Korean Hip-Hop Artists, Gwen Roberts

This thesis examines a selection of songs by various mainstream Korean hip-hop artists to understand how they perform Blackness in a transnational context. This research employs a qualitative content analysis of song lyrics from twenty-four songs selected through both convenience and purposeful sampling. The songs examined are from thirty-nine hip-hop artists, both Korean and Korean-American/Canadian, who self-identified as Korean hip-hop artists. Along with supplemental theories, Marc D. Perry's "self-fashioning" (2008) and Geoff Harkness' "situational authenticity" (2012) are central theoretical frameworks in this thesis. The findings from the content analysis are organized into four themes: linguistics, culture/positionality, conventions, and class status. …

This thesis argues that Tanzania’s socialist policies in the 1960s were heavily influenced by foreign sources, in contrast to what President Nyerere tried to brand as a homegrown form of socialism that harkened back to a pre-colonial era before the nation-state of Tanzania ever existed. It examines how foreign aid affected the villagization scheme and the cultural programs President Nyerere enacted to turn Tanzania into a developed state.
