Craig Santos Perez's poetic series from Unincorporated Territory describes and decries the U.S. militarization, colonization, and environmental degradation of Guam in the Western Pacific through multilingual, excerpted, and series-long poems. Perez's writing style requires slow, careful reading with translations sometimes appearing on the same page, various pages later, or not at all. I describe this kind of elongated translation as slow translation, recalling translation theorist Michael Cronin's "Slow Language" movement. This thesis invites readers, especially multispecies ethnographers, to slow down the translation of nonhuman species and their stories by paying attention to moments of untranslatability in multispecies literature and interactions. …

This research focuses on machine (and deep) learning applications (including clustering,anomaly detection and signal classification) for self-organizing and next generation mobile networks in wireless communications. Specifically, this dissertation document will address the three different topics.

First, in the study titled “Performance analysis of neural network topologies and hyperparameters for deep clustering”, we explore the relationship between the clustering performance and network complexity. As the Second Seminole War drew to a close in the spring of 1842, Lieutenant James Willoughby Anderson prepared to leave territorial Florida for a post in the Old Northwest. Pondering his experiences and life changes since entering the territory in 1837, Anderson would have looked back on many significant accomplishments. On the evening of March 22, 1836, Capt. Mervine P. Mix, U.S.N., brought the USS Concord to anchor in Key West harbor. The island was a good place to repair several damaged sails and to rest after the long voyage from the Portsmouth Navy Yard in New Hampshire. The Concord, 127 feet long with a 17-foot draft and mounting 18 guns, was one of the navy's finest sloops-of-war. Under its first commander, Matthew C. In 1599, Garcilaso de la Vega published his account of Hernando de Soto's journey through what is today the southeastern United State. Based on th author's romantie perceptions of North America and dubious evidence provided by expedition members, the work's factual validity is questionable in many regards.1 Nevertheless, Garcilaso's interpretation provides valuable information pertaining to the imagee of the Florida created and perpetuated by European visitors during the sixteenth century.2 In particular, one passage attributed to Hernando de Soto encapsulated general colonist opinions regarding native peoples. Also labeled the Billy Bowlegs War, this final uprising of the Seminole tribe occurred in South Florida between 1855 and 1858. This article critically examines the current discourse on the legal status and substance of the international law concept of "sovereignty" in cyberspace against the backdrop of conflicting political-ideological attitudes. It first traces the origins of the interpretation of "respect for sovereignty" as a primary rule of international law, and then discusses two approaches to cyberspace that challenge the emerging consensus: "cyber imperialism," embodied by the US and the other Five Eyes members on the one hand, and "cyber-Westphalia," represented by China, Russia, and Iran on the other. Zirconium hydroxide’s adsorption properties make it useful for the decomposition of chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals. In the current study, isopropanol is used to examine the adsorption behavior of the zirconium hydroxide surface sites through a series of microreactor experiments. Initially, the mass delivery of isopropanol is calibrated as a function of temperature and gas flow rate. Separate experiments can then be done by flowing the isopropanol mixture through a sample of zirconium hydroxide to quantitatively determine the amount of isopropanol that can adsorb onto a sample of zirconium hydroxide. A traditional relativistic magnetron is an efficient, high-power source of cm-wave radiation. Typically, a cathode sits inside the interaction region and produces a quickly expanding cathode plasma. However, rapid radial expansion leads to unwanted frequency drift and pulse shortening. Recently, researchers at Technion, in collaboration with the University of New Mexico, proposed to use a split cathode to form a low-energy “squeezed” state by injecting electrons externally into a potential well and squeezing them with a sufficiently strong magnetic field. The International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) provides the Executive with emergency authority to act in the realm of foreign affairs and national security. As global power struggles increasingly play out in financial markets as opposed to battle fields, the United States is leveraging global capital markets, banking, and financial systems to effectuate national security goals – and is relying on IEEPA to do so. Building upon French philosopher Michel Foucault’s analysis of Jeremy Bentham’s Panopticon, I argue that throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, the news media and resulting culture nurtured and reinforced the postcolonial narratives that associated Blackness with criminality. I analyze the national newspaper coverage for their narrative portrayal of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense (BPP). The national media and U.S. government targeted the BPP and Black Power politics to discredit them and the overall movement for Black Liberation. Since 2011, approximately 200,000 service members transitioned from military service to the civilian sector each year (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2016). , 2014). According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ 2018 Employment Situation of Veterans Summary report, 8.9% of veterans were disadvantaged as they have little to no higher education. Without a financial support system to fall back on, transitioning veterans face the inevitable issue of homelessness. Research by Tsai, Hoff, and Harpaz- Rotem (2017) found the rate of homelessness among veterans has increased over the past decade with female veterans more likely than their male counterparts to …
