Abolition Is Not Abstract: Zines And The Transmission Of Revolutionary Cultural Capital, Austin Wonder Jan 2022

Abolition Is Not Abstract: Zines And The Transmission Of Revolutionary Cultural Capital, Austin Wonder

Master's Theses

Abolition as a theory and practice-whether in relation to the institution of the prison, systems of policing, or the carceral state as a whole-has received relatively little attention or serious appreciation within the discipline of Sociology. Calls for the abolition of policing and prisons are often taken for granted as naïve and radical demands, perceived as being disassociated from the material conditions of reality. Nonetheless, abolitionist analyses provide a unique and critical perspective from which to explore alternatives to addressing pervasive police violence and mass incarceration through strategies which do not rely upon, or increase the power of, the criminal …

Experiencing Dyslexia Through The Prism Of Difference, Keith Murphy Jan 2022

Experiencing Dyslexia Through The Prism Of Difference, Keith Murphy

Doctoral

According to research by AHEAD (2021), students with specific learning difficulties are accessing third level education in greater numbers than ever before. My research has shown this to be the case also, however, my research, alongside a larger body of research (Clouder 2020; O’Brien, 2019; McCullagh, 2018) have highlighted that student with dyslexia tend not to access the support services. Within the body of research conducted in third level education in Ireland, few have focused on the overall experiences of students with dyslexia studying in third level education. My study addresses this gap in knowledge as it provides an insight …

Inhumane, Jordan Brown

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

My Goal is to bring awareness to the plight of wild creatures who have lost their habitats due to pollution and urban sprawl. I will be making porcelain vessels that influence people to think about their role on the environment. Both terrestrial and aquatic life has been impacted by humans through poaching, non-traditional medical practices, and human activity in the ocean. By making impressionable clay urns, I hope to bring light to these issues that affect animals. Through research I have been enthused by the steep historical forms from Greece, China, and Europe. Their exceptional skill and knowledge of the …

The Daughters Of Remington Taylor, Latoya Faulk Jan 2022

The Daughters Of Remington Taylor, Latoya Faulk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Synopsis

Feminine hygiene is a billion-dollar industry and women of color are the largest consumers of feminine hygiene products—particularly vaginal douching; studies link this frequent use of douching to high levels of harmful chemical compounds and adverse health effects. In researching hygiene rituals, the phrase “fresh and clean” came up repeatedly when Black women expressed feelings that came with their use or purchase of tampons, powders, soaps, sprays, douches, wipes, lotions, suppositories, napkins, and creams guaranteed to tame the odorous, fluid draining, and menstruating vagina.

FRESH AND CLEAN is a novel interested in the cultural obsession of vaginal cleanliness. The …

Carnivalizing The Nation: Reassessing The Trinidad And Tobago Carnival As An Inclusive Platform For Local And Diaspora Cultural Identity, Shari Bissoondatt Jan 2022

Carnivalizing The Nation: Reassessing The Trinidad And Tobago Carnival As An Inclusive Platform For Local And Diaspora Cultural Identity, Shari Bissoondatt

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Trinidad and Tobago's 2020 National Cultural policy ostensibly seeks to build the twin islands’ cultural confidence through the development of a unifying and empowering national cultural identity. However, this research asserts that the current policy undermines these national goals by approaching its community through problematic colonial, nationalist frameworks and through centralizing the annual carnival festival. This positioning poses several key problems. First, it reinscribes the colonial cultural identity of the island. Second, this nationalist, Christian colonial approach reinforces a binary of belonging and non-belonging that excludes minoritized, diasporic, and non-conforming gender communities. Third, by centralizing carnival in cultural policy, the …

Exploring Social Identity Complexity And The Possible Impact On Stereotype Threat, Lindsay Quarles Jan 2022

Exploring Social Identity Complexity And The Possible Impact On Stereotype Threat, Lindsay Quarles

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Stereotype threat is the fear of confirming as self-characteristic, a negative stereotype associated with a specific social identity that can hinder performance (Steele & Aronson, 1995). It is hypothesized that one way to protect against stereotype threat is to increase the availability of salient non-threatened identities (Croizet et al., 2001). Social identity complexity (SIC) is a theoretical construct that refers to the nature of the subjective representation of multiple ingroup identities (Brewer, 2008; Roccas & Brewer, 2002). The main hypothesis was that possessing a more complex social identity will provide protection against stereotype threat by providing increased availability of salient …

Mieczysław Weinberg: Music Transcending Tragedy, Ilana Shapiro Jan 2022

Mieczysław Weinberg: Music Transcending Tragedy, Ilana Shapiro

Pomona Senior Theses

This thesis examines the music of Mieczysław Weinberg, a prolific Jewish Holocaust-era composer whose compositions remain in relative obscurity through the present day. I begin by investigating the musical expression of Weinberg’s Polish and Jewish identity under Soviet state persecution via close analysis of selected works: the Cello Fantasia, Op. 52 and Cello Concertino, Op. 43bis. Through context of composition and allusions to Jewish music and Polish folksong, these works reveal Weinberg’s identity as a Jew and a Pole, his connection to his homeland and youth, and his musical expression beyond the demands of the state. Subsequently, I explore qualities …

Surviving Festival Disruptions : The Transformation Of The New Life | Performance Cultural Ecosystem In Contemporary Bangkok Due To The 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic, Pornrat Damrhung

Journal of Urban Culture Research

This article examines how COVID-19 disrupted the Life | Performance festival in Bangkok in 2020; focusing on changes in three festival components. Viewing the festival as a cultural ecosystem interrupted by the 2020 novel coronavirus, the article will focus on the disruptions forced on three pieces: Eko Supriyanto’s Urban Movement Laboratory, Gecko Parade’s Lindbergh’s Flight and Pichet Klunchun’s No. 60: Exhibition, Lecture | Demonstration. The pandemic-induced disruptions in these performances highlight several important ways that the COVID-19 pandemic transformed the Life | Performance urban festival. Changes occurred in the timing/scheduling, spacing/location, relationship with audiences/viewers and their mode of performance for …

Manual Culture, Women’S Medical Practice, And English Health In Spenser, Shakespeare, And Wroth, Melissa L. Kleinschmidt Jan 2022

Manual Culture, Women’S Medical Practice, And English Health In Spenser, Shakespeare, And Wroth, Melissa L. Kleinschmidt

Doctoral Dissertations

As England’s boundaries became increasingly permeable due to expanding intercultural interactions in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth centuries, defining what it meant to be “English” became increasingly vital. The English housewife was integral to shaping a national English identity. The creation of a distinctly English housewife, I argue, manifested itself most clearly in what I term “manual culture,” a phenomenon in which manuals were imbued with authority to dictate acceptable behaviors, beliefs, and knowledge for women to have and follow. These domestic and conduct manuals provided instruction on not only how to behave, but also how to maintain healthy minds, bodies, …

Different Versions Of Myself, Anya Smith Jan 2022

Different Versions Of Myself, Anya Smith

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

This is a research-informed screenplay exploring the relationship between religion and recreational pole dancing. While the popularity of recreational pole dancing has grown over the last two decades, it remains a controversial topic in some circles. This study employed interviews, autoethnography, and a literature review to examine the tensions between pole dancing and religion. Creative Analytic Practice was employed as a method of evaluating and presenting the research, which culminated in a fictional screenplay.

The story is about Louise, a young woman caught between two worlds. She feels pressured to conceal her recreational pole dancing activities in order to retain …

Disablist Propaganda: Evil On One Hand, And A Hook For The Other, Lauren Reitz, Richard Murphy Jan 2022

Disablist Propaganda: Evil On One Hand, And A Hook For The Other, Lauren Reitz, Richard Murphy

University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal

Despite its publication by J.M. Barrie in 1904, Peter and Wendy has attracted very little critical attention. Perhaps the story is so beloved for its adventure-packed plot, and sweet message about a boy who never grows old, that even scholars have trouble criticizing it—despite its obvious calls for analysis as film and literary adaptations continue to appear.

However, most concerning is an apparent gap in the analysis of the story’s disabled villain, Captain Hook, through a modern Disability Studies lens. The following textual analysis of Captain Hook will serve to call attention to the way his disability plays into his …

A Pop Culture Guide To Antitrust, Spencer Weber Waller Jan 2022

A Pop Culture Guide To Antitrust, Spencer Weber Waller

Faculty Publications & Other Works

Antitrust is having quite a moment. New competition cases and investigations abound in the United States and around the world, challenging the dominance of tech platforms and other powerful firms. There are numerous legislative changes under consideration. The new Presidential Order on competition1 and other proposals for change all indicate additional changes are coming. But is antitrust also being depicted in popular culture in a way that fairly reflects the law and its current relevance?

More importantly, where can you go for a good movie, TV show, book, or Broadway show about the area of law that has been called …

Huddle Implementation In The Perioperative Setting, Tina Thomas Jan 2022

Huddle Implementation In The Perioperative Setting, Tina Thomas

DNP Projects

Background: Communication is essential for safe and effective patient care. In the perioperative setting, information sharing is critical to care coordination. Lack of communication between caregivers can lead to medical errors. Evidence shows that huddles lead to increased communication, satisfaction, and engagement between team members resulting in better patient outcomes. Huddles are short, less than 10-minute gatherings that focus on the daily schedule, identify potential obstacles, explain unique needs, and discuss preceding day issues.

Objectives: This project aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of huddles on employee satisfaction, engagement, and communication of healthcare workers while also determining if huddles were …

Being The Bigger Ram: Arable Vs Pastoral Masculinities In The Towneley Mactacio Abel, Daisy E. Black Jan 2022

Being The Bigger Ram: Arable Vs Pastoral Masculinities In The Towneley Mactacio Abel, Daisy E. Black

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

This article addresses the construction of rural masculine identities through a study of the Towneley manuscript play Mactacio Abel (The Killing of Abel) and the relationships the play stages between human, animal, and land. It argues that the Mactacio Abel places pastoral and arable agricultural labor in competition through the play’s two brothers, and that this competition takes the form of a gendered attack on the masculinity of each. The article begins with Cain’s arable farming and how the character’s antagonistic relationship with the earth hints at his failures as laborer and as a man. It examines Cain’s …

Propuestas De Autoría Y Datación En El Teatro De Lope De Vega A La Luz De La Inteligencia Artificial, Álvaro Cuéllar

Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies

The purpose of this thesis is to shed light on the numerous authorship and dating problems presented by the Spanish Golden Age theatre. Specifically, it focuses on Lope de Vega (1562-1635), a notable and highly successful playwright of this period. Through the compilation of a wide set of texts and the application of Artificial Intelligence techniques (machine learning), a control corpus is evaluated to find the best systems and parameters. Once this evaluation has been undertaken, a large group of plays is analyzed to try to obtain results that can illuminate some real problems of authorship and dating in relation …
