The Architecture And Dynamics Of Gene Regulatory Networks Directing Cell-Fate Choice During Murine Hematopoiesis, Joanna Handzlik
The Architecture And Dynamics Of Gene Regulatory Networks Directing Cell-Fate Choice During Murine Hematopoiesis, Joanna Handzlik
Theses and Dissertations
Mammals produce hundreds of billions of new blood cells every day througha process known as hematopoiesis. Hematopoiesis starts with stem cells that develop into all the different types of cells found in blood by changing their genome-wide gene expression. The remodeling of genome-wide gene expression can be primarily attributed to a special class of proteins called transcription factors (TFs) that can activate or repress other genes, including genes encoding TFs. TFs and their targets therefore form recurrent networks called gene regulatory networks (GRNs). GRNs are crucial during physiological developmental processes, such as hematopoiesis, while abnormalities in the regulatory interactions of …
Suitability Analysis Of Snow And Ice Changes For Ice Patch Archaeology: A Case Study In The Crazy Mountains, Montana, Christine Kay Lidenberg
Suitability Analysis Of Snow And Ice Changes For Ice Patch Archaeology: A Case Study In The Crazy Mountains, Montana, Christine Kay Lidenberg
Theses and Dissertations
As technology advances over the years there has been a growing interest in the application of using remote sensing for conveying the detection of alpine archaeological sites. As climate changes and global temperatures rise across the globe perennial snow/ ice patches are melting and disappearing in alpine areas. These alpine archaeological sites are being immensely affected and, in some cases, destroyed. The research was conducted to determine if using both remote sensing imagery and suitability models could detect the extent of perennial snow/ice patch loss and determine the ice patches most vulnerable to melting in the Crazy Mountains of Montana. …
Engaging Undergraduate Students In Classroom Discussion: Exploring Impacts On Reflective Judgment Skills, Aubrey Mae Madler
Engaging Undergraduate Students In Classroom Discussion: Exploring Impacts On Reflective Judgment Skills, Aubrey Mae Madler
Theses and Dissertations
Higher education institutions are to teach advanced thinking skills that help students process information, make judgments, and justify associated beliefs. Such skills are necessary for reflective judgment according to the reflective judgment model (RJM). The purpose of this study was to explore whether engaging undergraduate students in classroom discussion surrounding ill-structured problems impacted these advanced thinking skills. It implemented a quasi-experimental, posttest-only control-group design using the validated semi-structured Reflective Judgment Interview (RJI) protocol to score reflective judgment skills of sixteen undergraduate students. The RJM and its RJI protocol, developed by King and Kitchener (1994) categorizes thinking into three main areas: …
An Examination Of The Effects Of Body Mapping Instruction On Singers’ Static Standing Posture And Posture While Singing, Amanda Moreno
An Examination Of The Effects Of Body Mapping Instruction On Singers’ Static Standing Posture And Posture While Singing, Amanda Moreno
Theses and Dissertations
Physical posture is one of the fundamental aspects of vocal technique, and voice pedagogues suggest that effective alignment is necessary for healthy vocal production. Body Mapping (BMG) is a somatic method that focuses on the understanding and correction of errors in a person’s body map to facilitate effective movement for musical activity. Because this method has balance, physical alignment, and posture as foundational, it may be an effective way to begin to instruct students. This study investigated whether the use of the BMG method, which teaches posture through movement, scientific pictures, and anatomical models, would result in a significant difference …
Systems Modeling As A Means Of Building Accuate Mental Models Of Physiology Core Concepts In Undergraduate And Graduate Health Sciences Students, Michelle Murphy
Systems Modeling As A Means Of Building Accuate Mental Models Of Physiology Core Concepts In Undergraduate And Graduate Health Sciences Students, Michelle Murphy
Theses and Dissertations
Accurate medical and health sciences problem solving relies upon a solid foundation of basic sciences content knowledge, primarily physiology. Yet, due to its nature as a dynamic system of interconnected, networked, concepts, physiology is often difficult for students to master. The three studies in this dissertation explore the use of a cognitive tool, systems modeling, to facilitate the development of an accurate mental model of physiology content knowledge in undergraduate and graduate physiology students. In the first study, undergraduate physiology student participation within online asynchronous peer group systems modeling activities was associated with progressive improvement on multiple choice question answer …
Prioritizing Gifted Pedagogy In Middle School Honors: A Delphi Study, Bailey Nafziger
Prioritizing Gifted Pedagogy In Middle School Honors: A Delphi Study, Bailey Nafziger
Theses and Dissertations
This research explores the perceptions of gifted specialists and middle school honors teachers to determine which elements from gifted pedagogy can be used to motivate gifted adolescents in an honors classroom setting. In addition, the priorities of gifted specialists and honors classroom teachers were compared to highlight key patterns. The Delphi approach was used to facilitate three rounds of anonymous collaboration between the two expert groups. Three priorities emerged through the collaboration: 1) critical thinking, 2) acceleration, and 3) goals of the class and curriculum. While social emotional issues were priorities in initial rounds, no social emotional priorities were selected …
Voice Of The Voiceless: Alumni Of A Rural North Dakota School Respond To Traditional Urban Solutions For Rural Education, Thomas Warman
Voice Of The Voiceless: Alumni Of A Rural North Dakota School Respond To Traditional Urban Solutions For Rural Education, Thomas Warman
Theses and Dissertations
Equitable school district funding is a constant challenge for state legislatures. When budgets must be trimmed, the panacea for state legislatures has traditionally been approached strictly through the lens of economic efficiency. Since small rural schools typically have a greater per pupil cost, they are often forced into consolidating with nearby districts based on size alone. This research looked at how North Dakota should approach any changes to N.D. Cent. Code § 15.1-12 (n.d.), dealing with mandatory consolidation. Two theoretical frameworks were used in this research. The first, isomorphism, examined definitions of proper school district size and have been defined …
Ice Hockey Goaltender Performance: Examining The Role Of Basic Psychological Needs And Self-Determined Motivation, Nathan Dean Speidel
Ice Hockey Goaltender Performance: Examining The Role Of Basic Psychological Needs And Self-Determined Motivation, Nathan Dean Speidel
Theses and Dissertations
Ice hockey goaltending is a physically and mentally challenging task within a complex sport. Although goaltending has been shown to contribute more to team success outcomes than any other ice hockey position, goalies are often misunderstood and either under or improperly coached. As a result, goaltenders, coaches, parents, and hockey organizations alike express a need for deeper understanding of the position, especially its mental aspects. Motivation has long been considered a foundational factor for athletic success and continues to be recognized as essential for athlete performance and overall well-being. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze fundamental psychosocial …
Phylogenetic Relationships Of Noctuoid Moths With An Examination Of Complex Characteristics, Melissa Sisson
Phylogenetic Relationships Of Noctuoid Moths With An Examination Of Complex Characteristics, Melissa Sisson
Theses and Dissertations
The tribe Noctuini comprise over 520 species; many are economically important species that impact human agriculture. Despite their diversity and relevance, relationships of the Noctuini have been difficult to resolve. There are extensive morphological revisions of these taxa (e.g., Agrotis, Euxoa); however, there are no studies that focus exclusively on the phylogenetic relationships of the Noctuini. Currently, the Noctuini are separated into two subtribes, the Agrotina and Noctuina, which each are further subdivided into two subgenera. In this study, we tested previous classification schemes using three loci. We sampled three outgroup taxa and 54 noctuine species that represent the majority …
Leveling Up To A Reasonable Woman's Expectation Of Privacy, Victoria Schwartz
Leveling Up To A Reasonable Woman's Expectation Of Privacy, Victoria Schwartz
University of Colorado Law Review
Various privacy law doctrines involve a reasonable expectation of privacy or similar analyses that take into account social privacy norms. For the most part, however, neither courts nor scholars have explicitly grappled with whether courts descriptively do or normatively should consider gender in deciding what constitutes a reasonable expectation of privacy. This is despite the fact that, in various scenarios, a reasonable woman’s expectation of privacy might vary from a man’s in light of different lived experiences, biological differences, and existing societal gendered privacy norms.
This Article addresses how courts do and should take into account a reasonable woman’s expectation …

University of Colorado Law Review
The following work contains three monologues from Motus Theater's UndocuAmerica Project, which aims to interrupt dehumanizing portrayals of immigrants by encouraging thoughtful engagement on the challenges faced by undocumented communities and the assets immigrants bring to our country. The monologues were created in a collaboration between leaders with DACA status and Motus Theater Artistic Director Kirsten Wilson during a seventeen-week autobiographical- monologue workshop. All three pieces were presented in a virtual performance on April 8, 2021, as an introduction to the 29th Annual Rothgerber Conference.
The Failures Of Good Moral Character Determinations For Naturalization, Zachary New
The Failures Of Good Moral Character Determinations For Naturalization, Zachary New
University of Colorado Law Review
This Article examines the effects of the good-moral-character requirement in naturalization proceedings. Specifically, it looks to such character requirements as a method by which a citizen polity screens out undesirable noncitizens from those who are deserving of inclusion in the "in"g roup of citizenship. The Article discusses historical methods of good-moral-character adjudication, and especially how such methods carried an undercurrent of forgiveness and redemption-an undercurrent lacking in the current method of statutory bars to showings of good moral character. By looking at specific examples of statutory bars to showings of good moral character, this Article argues that the overinclusive nature …
Synchronizing Copyright And Technology: A New Paradigm For Sync Rights, Michael P. Goodyear
Synchronizing Copyright And Technology: A New Paradigm For Sync Rights, Michael P. Goodyear
Missouri Law Review
Embedded in a copyright owner’s musical work or sound recording is the synchronization, or sync right, the exclusive right to use music in sync, or in timed-relation, with audiovisual works. Considerations about sync rights, one of the least discussed aspects of music copyright, have come to the fore as the world has increasingly moved from the real world to the virtual. The COVID-19 pandemic has spurred thousands of activities and events to go online. With many of these involving music, the shift to the virtual world has raised new questions about the extent of sync rights.
The Most Dangerous Branch Of Science? Reining In Rogue Research And Reckless Experimentation In Social Services, James G. Dwyer
The Most Dangerous Branch Of Science? Reining In Rogue Research And Reckless Experimentation In Social Services, James G. Dwyer
Missouri Law Review
Most people are unaware how much public policy is either lacking in any empirical-research support or driven by bad research. Political actors motivated by ideology or donor/constituent demands propose new government practices—in areas ranging from policing to funding of treatments for gender dysphoria in youth to welfare-qualification rules—that will greatly impact people’s lives, and if anyone asks what basis they have for thinking the impact will be good, they can readily find some study to support their case. Especially when powerless populations are put at risk, neither the legislative process nor peer review in the publication process provides a real …
Risky Business: Breakfast Sandwiches, Course Of Employment, And Revisiting Missouri Workers’ Compensation Law, Trent H. Hamoud
Risky Business: Breakfast Sandwiches, Course Of Employment, And Revisiting Missouri Workers’ Compensation Law, Trent H. Hamoud
Missouri Law Review
Since its inception, the Missouri Workers’ Compensation scheme has presented interesting and complex problems regarding workplace risk allocation. To avoid workplace injuries, employees and employers engage in significant preventative behaviors. One such action by employers is employee monitoring. Clearly, however, constant workplace monitoring is not feasible. This inherent limitation leads to this Note’s initial inquiry: at what point do the actions of employees taken out of sight of their employers create compensable claims under the existing Missouri Workers’ Compensation system, and what inefficiencies may result from requiring that employers provide compensation for the injuries that arise from such actions? Boothe …
Creating An Impossible Burden: State Ex Rel. Becker V. Wood And Prosecutorial Vindictiveness, Rachael Moore
Creating An Impossible Burden: State Ex Rel. Becker V. Wood And Prosecutorial Vindictiveness, Rachael Moore
Missouri Law Review
In the American criminal justice system, prosecutors have an enormous amount of discretion and power. With dockets growing more cramped, prosecutors often use threats of harsher charges and sentences to deter defendants from exercising their right to a jury trial or an appeal. Prosecutors can also wield this power for purely vindictive or retaliatory purposes, as one prosecutor noted when reflecting on his career: Sometimes a public defender or a defense lawyer will just try and bust your ass all the time. Frankly, you end up busting theirs back. You get irritated, but you try not to take it out …
Blown Whistle Falls On Deaf Ears: The Eighth Circuit Interprets Map-21’S Whistleblower Provision, Sarah (Walters) Porter
Blown Whistle Falls On Deaf Ears: The Eighth Circuit Interprets Map-21’S Whistleblower Provision, Sarah (Walters) Porter
Missouri Law Review
In recent years, whistleblowers have been praised as heroes by onlookers and in the media for bravely unveiling wrongdoing by their employers, but whistleblowers have not always enjoyed this white-hat status. These private employees expose themselves to serious risks of backlash and retaliation from their employers, historically without any guaranteed protection from Congress or their respective state legislatures. Decades-old social norms and corporate culture prioritized loyalty from employees. They allowed employers to fire employees who spoke out against the company and even blackball them from their respective industries. With blind loyalty or termination being the only options for employees witnessing …
The Destruction Gap: A Study Of The Unprotected Societal Interest In Privately Held Artworks, Jessica Schmitz
The Destruction Gap: A Study Of The Unprotected Societal Interest In Privately Held Artworks, Jessica Schmitz
Missouri Law Review
Imagine putting a Warhol through a washing machine, a Rembrandt in a recycling bin, or a Seurat in a shredder. If you are the lucky owner of a masterpiece by one of these artists you may take any of these actions and face no legal repercussions, thereby destroying the artwork and removing it from the cultural landscape. Our understanding of world history would be neither as beautiful, illuminated, nor as informed if artworks of cultural significance like these were destroyed. For example, little would be known of the ideologies of pre-historic civilizations but for the sculptures, wall paintings, and other …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Background. For men with intermediate-risk prostate cancer (IRPC), adding short-term androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) to external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) has shown efficacy, but men are often reluctant to accept it because of its impact on quality of life. Methods. We conducted time tradeoffs (score of 1 = perfect health and 0 = death) and probability tradeoffs with patients aged 51 to 78 y who had received EBRT for IRPC within the past 2 y. Of 40 patients, 20 had received 6 mo of ADT and 20 had declined. Utility assessments explored 4 ADT-related side effects: hot flashes, fatigue, loss …

Fracture Initiation And Propagation In Shale Formations With Anisotropic Toughness, Nourelhouda Benouadah
Fracture Initiation And Propagation In Shale Formations With Anisotropic Toughness, Nourelhouda Benouadah
Theses and Dissertations
Hydraulic Fracturing (HF) is the prime technology for enhanced production from shale plays. Due to their laminations at different scales, shales exhibit transverse isotropic (TI) properties. In most cases the lamination planes are nearly horizontal in shales setting with the symmetric axes being vertical, therefore, shales are referred to as TI vertical (TIV) rocks. This influences significantly the initiation and propagation of the induced fracture during fracturing operation. For instance, accurate estimation of the fracture initiation pressure (FIP) and fracture morphology is essential to ensure optimum hydraulic fracturing design in unconventional reservoirs. However, majority of studies of HF modelling in …
Thermal Deposition Of Tin Onto Molybdenum Disulfide, Robert Boyd
Thermal Deposition Of Tin Onto Molybdenum Disulfide, Robert Boyd
Theses and Dissertations
Since the discovery of graphene and its various unique mechanical and electrical properties, the study of 2D materials has been at the forefront of material research. Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs) are often at the epicenter of research due to their chemically inert nature. In addition, their lack of dangling bonds and reliance on van der Walls interactions ease cleaning/exfoliation. Making them ideal candidates for various applications ranging from electronics to energy storage and lubrication. Sn has two allotropes α-Sn and β-Sn. α-Sn is a low-temperature phase, a semiconductor with sp hybridized covalent bonds. On the other hand, β-Sn is metallic …
Factors Associated With New Hospital Nurses' Self-Efficacy In Providing Palliative End-Of-Life Care, Penny Marie Brriese
Factors Associated With New Hospital Nurses' Self-Efficacy In Providing Palliative End-Of-Life Care, Penny Marie Brriese
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Self-efficacy is defined as confidence in one’s competence; the ability to successfully accomplish tasks and achieve favorable outcomes (Bandura, 1997). Many nurses today say they feel their undergraduate education was inadequate for them to feel competent to provide palliative and EOL patient care. (Chiplaskey, 2016; Scherlin & Quinn, 2016; Zheng et al., 2018).). Inadequate EOL preparation also results in nurses experiencing distress, death anxiety, burnout, feeling overwhelmed and leaving practice within just a few years (Friedman et al., 2011; Gaw, 2012; Kovner et al., 2006; Parry, 2008; Silverstein, 2017, November 28; Suzuki et al., 2008; Wilson & Kirshbaum, 2013). …
Meta-Analysis For Comparing Effect Between Game-Based Learning Versus Gamification Utilized In Nutrition Education, Chia-Lin Chang
Meta-Analysis For Comparing Effect Between Game-Based Learning Versus Gamification Utilized In Nutrition Education, Chia-Lin Chang
Theses and Dissertations
The prevalence of obesity tripled from 1975 to 2016 and was declared as a global epidemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1997 (Haththotuwa et al., 2020; "Controlling the global obesity epidemic," 2022). Nutrition education that involves knowledge and behavioral change is one major component addressing the problem ("Controlling the global obesity epidemic," 2022). Therefore, the effectiveness of each learning session is essential (Sharifirad et al., 2013). Thus, many nutrition educators have used gamified nutrition education to improve teaching effectiveness to increase healthy behavior or knowledge (Chow et al., 2020.; Munguba et al., 2008; Azevedo et al., 2019). Two …
An Introduction To Numerical Relativity And Simulations Of Binary Neutron Stars, Hayden Dale Drown
An Introduction To Numerical Relativity And Simulations Of Binary Neutron Stars, Hayden Dale Drown
Theses and Dissertations
The theory of general relativity is currently the best description of gravity. However, the equations in general relativity are highly nonlinear and only the simplest of cases can hope to be solved analytically. As a result, the field of numerical relativity was created to solve some of these issues and to model more complicated dynamical situations. This thesis sets out to give the reader a basic understanding of general relativity, numerical relativity, as well as an understanding of some of the programs that are used in numerical relativity research such as Lorene and the Einstein Toolkit and concludes with a …
The Moral Foundations Of Attitudes Toward Mask Wearing, Kristen N. Leighton
The Moral Foundations Of Attitudes Toward Mask Wearing, Kristen N. Leighton
Theses and Dissertations
As COVID-19 becomes endemic it is important to understand individual differences in motivation and adherence to mask wearing policies and recommendations. Mask wearing appears to be one way to protect communities, slow the spread, and save lives when COVID-19 rates spike in communities The main study aim was to examine how Moral Foundations Theory and Theory of Planned Behavior, specifically subjective norms, may explain individual differences in mask wearing to slow the spread of COVID-19. Understanding the psychological correlates of why and how often individuals wear a mask to slow the spread of COVID-19 can help community leaders, public health …
Examining Cultural Identification And Substance Use Among American Indian And Caucasian Adults, Lynn Ruth Martell
Examining Cultural Identification And Substance Use Among American Indian And Caucasian Adults, Lynn Ruth Martell
Theses and Dissertations
Previous research suggests American Indians (AIs) demonstrate higher levels of substance use and related consequences. AIs have experienced historical trauma through colonization which has created shifts in the way AIs conceptualize their identity. However, the literature on cultural identification as an influencing factor of substance use among AIs is inconsistent. The current study examined alcohol and drug use/related consequences, collective self-esteem, and cultural identification among 213 AI (n = 44) and Caucasian (CA; n = 169) adults via online surveys. Results indicated higher scores on the American Indian Cultural Identification (AICI) scale was a predictor for increased alcohol and drug …

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy/Spectroscopy Measurements And Density Functional Theory Calculations On Cr/Si Modified Surfaces And Probing Dielectric Properties Of A Si Nanocrystal Thin Film Using Xps, Sameera Madhusanka Pathirana Pathiranage
Theses and Dissertations
CrSi2 is an important refractory metal-silicide with high thermal power and a narrow bandgap which makes it a suitable material for high-temperature thermoelectric applications. The present work investigates the early stages of the growth of Cr film on Si (110) and its electronic properties by combining Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Density Functional Theory. Cr atoms deposited on Si (110) formed grains of CrSi2 with interfacial dislocations along 1/2<1 1-1> Burgers vectors. After annealing at 1100°C, disconnected CrSi2 crystallites emerged. The crystallites had well-defined facets. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements showed that the crystallites were metallic. Simulated DOS data of the facets also …1>
The Impact Of Betrayal Trauma On Sexual Assertiveness In Women And The Examination Of Trust And Self-Esteem As Mediating Factors, Alexandra Rehovsky
The Impact Of Betrayal Trauma On Sexual Assertiveness In Women And The Examination Of Trust And Self-Esteem As Mediating Factors, Alexandra Rehovsky
Theses and Dissertations
There is a significant body of research that links sexual assault to a decrease in sexual assertiveness; however, there is a gap in research exploring how other forms of trauma that involve a violation of trust and security within close relationships (i.e., other forms of betrayal trauma) may also negatively impact sexual assertiveness. In the current study, 310 female participants were assessed for a history of betrayal trauma, as well as self-reported sexual assertiveness. In addition, three potential mediators were included in the study (relational trust, sexual self-esteem, and global self-esteem) to further explore the relationship between betrayal trauma and …
A Survey Of Research Administrators To Identify Areas Of Administrative Burden In Federal Research Grant Management, Jessica Lynn Schiller
A Survey Of Research Administrators To Identify Areas Of Administrative Burden In Federal Research Grant Management, Jessica Lynn Schiller
Theses and Dissertations
Many processes in higher education are complicated by administrative burden and proceduralinefficiencies. The federal government and research universities partner to advance science and technology, but the federal research grant process is criticized for its lack of efficient and streamlined procedures. Staff and faculty alike lament losing valuable time to bureaucratic regulations, cumbersome processes, and burgeoning reporting standards. As the cost of higher education is increasingly scrutinized, current procedures must be analyzed to identify areas of excessive administrative burden and redesigned to maximize efficiency. To address this issue, a Qualtrics survey was deployed to research administrators to identify areas of administrative …
