A Cell Culture Model To Study Tobacco Associated Oral Cancer Progression And Treatment Resistance, Amanda Busch
A Cell Culture Model To Study Tobacco Associated Oral Cancer Progression And Treatment Resistance, Amanda Busch
Theses & Dissertations
Head and Neck Squamous cell carcinoma is the 6th most common cancer in the world. Risk factors for HNSCC include alcohol and tobacco consumption, infection with Human Papilloma Virus, and exposure to environmental toxins. Unlike many other cancers, the incidence of HNSCC is growing, yet the treatment options and outcomes have not been significantly improved for decades. An increased understanding of the molecular mechanisms of these cancers is needed for improvement in early diagnosis, enhanced treatment effectiveness, and cancer prevention. 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4NQO) is a well-tested, tobacco mimicking, carcinogen. 4NQO produces similar histological and chemical changes found in human …
Teaching Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder Self-Protection Skills In Response To Bullying Situations, Maya J. Fallon
Teaching Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder Self-Protection Skills In Response To Bullying Situations, Maya J. Fallon
Theses & Dissertations
Children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are at high risk of being bullied but research on teaching children with ASD self-protection skills for bullying situations is scant. We assessed the generality of teaching procedures used in Stannis et al. (2019) to teach adults self-protection skills with autistic children. We taught five children self-protection skills for two types of bullying (threats and unkind remarks) in a one-on-one format. In addition, we taught children a self-protection skill for repeated bullying occurrences. We first evaluated behavioral skills training to teach children to report threats of physical or material harm, provide a disapproving …

The Effects Of Active Shootings On 4-H Youth And Families, Melinda Garcia, Elizabeth Gangwer
The Effects Of Active Shootings On 4-H Youth And Families, Melinda Garcia, Elizabeth Gangwer
Journal of Extension
The effects of active shootings should be a priority to provide needed assistance to 4-H youth and families in coping with their social-emotional well-being. Exposure to such violence can lead to lasting impacts on youth that can affect behavior. Addressing this sensitive topic is crucial in ensuring that Extension professionals are prepared to meet the needs of youth and families. Higher rates of depression, aggression, to name a few, are a result of having witnessed such events as a shooting. Providing training for Extension personnel can aid in reducing the amount of PTSD and other social-emotional trauma.
Curating The Agenda: A Review Of The Tenement Museum’S Twitter, Taylor Carpenter
Curating The Agenda: A Review Of The Tenement Museum’S Twitter, Taylor Carpenter
Theses
Most museums have established strong online presences, due in part to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. To stay relevant in the social media sphere, museums must keep up with the speed at which the internet operates. One way of doing this is to follow the current trends and events that are already piquing the interest of those on the internet. However, is it the museum account that follows the current events, or are current events influenced by the museum’s presence? By examining the Tenement Museum’s Twitter account through the agenda-setting and agenda-melding theories, this paper seeks to answer the …
The Process Of Growing In Small Firms: Exploring Dialectic Adjustments To Nonroutine Disruption, Ivana Milosevic, A. Erin Bass, Mary Uhl-Bien
The Process Of Growing In Small Firms: Exploring Dialectic Adjustments To Nonroutine Disruption, Ivana Milosevic, A. Erin Bass, Mary Uhl-Bien
Management Faculty Publications
Studies examining small firm growth have suggested that growth is complex due to the multitude of internal and external factors that disrupt it. However, in focusing mainly on external factors and paying less attention to internal factors, the process of growing – or what is happening inside a small firm as it grows – remains undertheorized. Using findings from a real-time case study of a small firm and insights from the dialectical perspective, we develop a theoretical model that illustrates growth as a dynamic process occurring through dialectic adjustments in response to disruptions that cannot be resolved with routine practices. …
Addressing The Educational And Interventional Needs Of Wiskott Aldrich Syndrome (Was) Patients And Families, Naomi Tesfaiohannes
Addressing The Educational And Interventional Needs Of Wiskott Aldrich Syndrome (Was) Patients And Families, Naomi Tesfaiohannes
Master's Projects and Capstones
Wiskott Aldrich Syndrome (WAS) is an immune system (immunodeficiency) and blood disorder that increases the risk of severe infections and bleeding. A patient with WAS has a significant reduction in the size and number of platelets (micro thrombocytopenia), meaning there is a reduced ability to form blood clots and stop bleeding. WAS affects approximately 1 in 250,000 males in the United States. Public information on WAS is predominantly scientifically based, which makes it difficult for families to fully understand the syndrome, the impacts of severe bleedings on patients’ daily activity, and how to improve the patients’ quality of life. This …

Powers And The Metaphysics Of Fundamentality, Benjamin Cook
Powers And The Metaphysics Of Fundamentality, Benjamin Cook
Dissertations - ALL
In this dissertation, I address the question of whether ground, the relation that obtains between entities e1...en and a further entity e when e ontologically depends on, and is metaphysically explained by, e1...en, should be understood causally and, if so, whether this has any substantive implications. I answer both in the affirmative. I argue that ground and causation are similar enough to motivate characterizing ground as a special kind of causation, and that this can be done if we adopt a powers-theoretic account of causation. Moreover, I argue that the resultant view of ground, what I call “powerful, existential causation,” …
Assessing The Mental Health Of Women At The Intersection Of Intimate Partner Violence And Animal Cruelty: Personal And Population Level Risk Factors For Co-Victimization, Alaina M. Beauchamp
Assessing The Mental Health Of Women At The Intersection Of Intimate Partner Violence And Animal Cruelty: Personal And Population Level Risk Factors For Co-Victimization, Alaina M. Beauchamp
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
One predictor of intimate partner violence (IPV) occurring in the home is pet abuse. The high prevalence of pet cruelty among IPV relationship can create a significant barrier to seeking help due to the inability to bring the pet or concern for the pet’s wellbeing. This human-animal bond is a more common source of emotional support among victims with experiences of pet abuse, as opposed to women whose pets had not been abused. This study 1) explored the relationship between victims of IPV and their pets, the dynamics and characteristics of situations of co-victimization (i.e., abuse of both a human …
Penalty Default Rules In Quebec Contract Law, Zackary Goldford
Penalty Default Rules In Quebec Contract Law, Zackary Goldford
Journal of Civil Law Studies
Few would deny that contract law is filled with default rules, but there has been a great deal of scholarly debate about their purposes and functions. Some American scholars have argued that there are default rules that do not align with most parties’ expectations; indeed, they impose a burden on one or both parties if they are not departed from. Departing from these default rules typically requires one or both parties to share information that they might have otherwise kept to themselves. These have been called “penalty default rules.” While there is a significant amount of scholarship on penalty default …
An Essay On Ideology And Legal Education In Micro Jurisdictions: The Example Of Jersey, David Marrani
An Essay On Ideology And Legal Education In Micro Jurisdictions: The Example Of Jersey, David Marrani
Journal of Civil Law Studies
This article explores the question of legal education in micro jurisdictions using the case of Jersey, a British Crown Dependency, positioned geographically, historically and culturally between two larger jurisdictions, France and the UK. It analyses how Jersey’s legal training is pulled towards those large “big neighbours,” rather than focusing on what makes its specificity and attraction. It questions how legal education in micro-jurisdiction is actually linked to ideology. The article starts with the following question: are we taking micro jurisdictions seriously? It then considers the routes to legal qualification in micro jurisdictions, before focusing specifically on the case of Jersey …

Conversations About Book Challenges And Bans: Civil Discourse Through Talking Frames And Sentence Stems, Alonna Lynn Liabenow
Masters Projects
Book challenges and bans are more prevalent than ever in the year 2022. The conversations surrounding the challenge of a book are often very stressful for the librarian, teacher, or administrator involved. This project seeks to ease some of that stress by giving the parties involved in conversation a talking frame. These talking frames are based on the norms of civil discourse and make use of sentence stems to guide potentially tense and awkward conversations.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to explore the influence of contextual factors and caregiving process characteristics on proximal outcomes of the patient and caregiver after discharge from the hospital. The long-term goal of this research is to reduce caregiver burden and improve patient outcomes. Heart failure (HF) is an increasingly common chronic illness with unique caregiving needs and a high rate of hospital readmissions. Caregiver burden has been researched extensively in other areas of medicine such as oncology and dementia and has been reported for stable chronic HF patients in an outpatient setting. However, there is little research …
The Role Of Parkin In Mitochondrial Dna, Eliezer Lichter
The Role Of Parkin In Mitochondrial Dna, Eliezer Lichter
Theses & Dissertations
Mitochondria are at the center of biological phenomena such as aging and diseases, especially neurodegenerative diseases. While the discovery of mitochondria only came approximately 200 years after the cell was discovered, a lot of progress has been made since. The mitochondrial genome encodes proteins vital for mitochondrial function. These proteins are only a subset of the proteins present in mitochondria; the rest are nuclear encoded. The nucleus also encodes cytosolic proteins vital for mitochondrial maintenance. One of these is Parkin, an E3 ubiquitin ligase that ubiquitinates mitochondrial proteins as mitochondria become depolarized. Its activity has been shown to be involved …
