Red Imported Fire Ants (Solenopsis Invicta) Infesting American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis) Nests, Ashley Osuna
Red Imported Fire Ants (Solenopsis Invicta) Infesting American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis) Nests, Ashley Osuna
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present
The red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) is known for its impacts on Florida wildlife; hatchlings of ground-nesting herpetofauna are particularly vulnerable. This study examined factors correlated with fire ant infestation of American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) nests. We were particularly interested in determining whether having floating nests afforded any protection from these ants. We surveyed ants on 24 alligator nests at Orange Lake located in Alachua County, Florida, using tuna baits left for ~2h. We found S. invicta was the most commonly observed species at nests, present at 12 of the 24 nests. There was no significant difference in the …

An Indefinite Punishment After Justice Has Been Served: Jones V. Governor Of Florida Is A Fundamentally Flawed Decision, Alexandra Russo
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present
The right to vote is a fundamental part of a representative democracy. As of 2020, 48 states have laws limiting a felon’s participation in the franchise, resulting in 5.2 million United States citizens being unable to vote. In 2018, Florida passed Amendment 4 with a 65% popular vote, allowing felons to be re-enfranchised after the terms of their sentence are completed. In 2019, the state enacted a law defining “terms of the sentence” to include court costs and fees, barring indigent felons from regaining their constitutional right. In Jones v. Governor of Florida, Judge Pryor upheld this law. I critically …

Targeting Health Care Inequalities Among Racial And Ethnic Minorities In The United States, Rami Radwan
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present
Statistics within different modes of health care suggest that inequalities exist between differing racial and ethnic subgroups, with some groups experiencing higher rates of positive health care outcomes as opposed to others. This thesis is a review of different sectors of health care and focuses to determine rates of inequalities between treatment of patients, rates of incidence among disseminating groups and focuses on representation of ethnic and racial minorities and to better illuminate how these problems affect people’s lives. It was found that discrepancies exist between the health care outcomes and incidence between Non-Hispanic White and Asian populations versus Non-Hispanic …
Altruistic Behavior Amoung Captive Chimpanzees, Esha Ranaweera
Altruistic Behavior Amoung Captive Chimpanzees, Esha Ranaweera
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present
Altruism plays an essential role in maintaining cooperative societies. From September 2021 to January 2022, I studied a group of seven chimpanzees (two males and five females) living in Lion Country Safari, recording acts of altruism related to grooming, food and water sharing, and border patrol. I found males on average both gave and received more grooming sessions. Among the few food and water sharing events I observed, males-males sharing was the most common. The two males performed almost all the border patrol. Altruistic behaviors among chimpanzees help bind their social groups in ways analogous to the human behaviors.
The Science Of Food Addiction, Prisca Sanford
The Science Of Food Addiction, Prisca Sanford
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present
Food addiction has become a critical concern that has reached pandemic proportions throughout the entire world and especially in America. Due to this condition, many diseases and deaths have occurred; however, this issue does not garner as much attention as necessary despite its seriousness and impact on individuals. This is due to how the condition is viewed, diagnosed, and treated. The mechanism of action of food addiction is homogenous with other forms of addiction, but differences in treatment options remain at issue. Diagnosis and treatment for food addiction, a psychological disorder must fall in line with treatment protocols of other …
The Genetics Of Atherosclerosis And Coronary Artery Disease, Craig Stridinger
The Genetics Of Atherosclerosis And Coronary Artery Disease, Craig Stridinger
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present
Atherosclerosis is a disease characterized by plaque lesion formation in arteries resulting in the narrowing and hardening of the vessel. This process causes a restriction in blood flow and can lead to further complications including the development of coronary artery disease, heart disease, and myocardial infarction. For many years, atherosclerosis was thought to be a disease resulting from hypercholesterolemia, but it is now known that the inflammatory process is a greater contributor to the pathogenesis of the disease. Numerous genes have been identified that play a role in the development of atherosclerosis, and novel therapeutics are being developed to treat …

The Influence Of Athlete Protests In American Society, Corey Sturgis
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present
On September 1st, 2016, 49ers star Quarterback, Colin Kaepernick made the decision to kneel during the national anthem. His actions immediately sparked political polarization as many NFL executives, along with US President Donald Trump, viewed his demonstration as a complete betrayal to his country, while others felt that his actions were strongly needed to help bring national attention to continued racial injustices in America. Many people were appalled by his actions and believe it was a new response intended to promote the Black Lives Matter Movement, failing to realize the historical significance of how athletes and activism intersect. This thesis …

The Focus Of Non-Military Threats: Biodefense And The Redefining Of National Security, Javier Suarez
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present
National security is not an easily defined concept. Over time, technological advances, globalization, and climate change have changed our perceptions of national security and how we approach policies to effectively contain potential hazards. This work aims to examine the emergence of zoonotic disease and the implications climate change has on humans and animals, the theories of international relations and their usefulness in formulating strategy, and why biodefense measures should be made priority in national security policy.

An Analytical Study And Description Of Coloboma And Charge Syndrome, Ana Toledo
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present
Coloboma and CHARGE Syndrome are rare congenital conditions that arise in about 1 in 10,000 children. Coloboma is a defect in the eyes. CHARGE Syndrome involves Coloboma, Heart defects, Atresia choanae (also known as choanal atresia), Restricted growth and development, Genital abnormalities, and Ear abnormalities. This thesis aims to spread awareness about the medical and physical complications that come with these conditions and the impacts they have on individuals. This thesis not only meticulously studies and characterizes the mutations and symptoms involved in Coloboma and CHARGE Syndrome, but also provides insight on treatment and possibilities of a cure.
On Humility In Medicine, Frida Zavala
On Humility In Medicine, Frida Zavala
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present
The importance of medical virtues has allowed physicians to flourish within their fields as they interact and form relationships with their co-workers, themselves, and, most importantly, their patients. Though much attention has been paid to virtues like compassion and integrity, the virtue of humility has been overlooked. This is unfortunate because humility, I will argue, is deeply important to being a virtuous physician. The humble physician collaboratively works with their patients to understand their concerns and find a solution in the patient’s best interest. In addition, I will argue that humility can indeed be taught and offer how it can …
Emotional Villages In The Medieval Mediterranean: Territorial Language Of Emotional Expression, 644–1508 C.E., Eden Vigil
History ETDs
This thesis examines the concept of an emotional village as one that embodies territorial emotions. The emotions themselves are categorically defined based on modern conventions, but utilizes the author’s words to expose the fluidity of emotion language amongst cultures and traditions. My research presents emotional villages in four sections to expose these modalities of feeling amongst cultures. The first section looks at devotion, wonder, and reverence; the second, loss, grief, and nostalgia; the third, fear and anger; the fourth, disgust and hatred. The fifth section is dedicated to the emotional village that is medieval Jerusalem. Emotions are merely the language …

Pathology Research and Scholarship
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common after trauma, but contributory factors are incompletely understood. Increases in plasma von Willebrand Factor (vWF) with concurrent decreases in ADAMTS13 are associated with renal microvascular thrombosis in other disease states, but similar findings have not been shown in trauma. We hypothesized that molecular changes in circulating vWF and ADAMTS13 promote AKI following traumatic injury. VWF antigen, vWF multimer composition and ADAMTS13 levels were compared in plasma samples from 16 trauma patients with and without trauma-induced AKI, obtained from the Prehospital Air Medical Plasma (PAMPer) biorepository. Renal histopathology and function, vWF and ADAMTS13 levels were …
Competing For Seafaring Labour: Social Security And Agency Employment In Chinese Shipping, Gang Chen, Lijun Tang
Competing For Seafaring Labour: Social Security And Agency Employment In Chinese Shipping, Gang Chen, Lijun Tang
Plymouth Business School
This paper discusses one strategy that Chinese crewing agencies adopt to compete with eachother in the global seafarer labour supplying market. This strategy is related to Chineseseafarers’ social insurance participation. It shows that crewing agencies utilised a dualworkforce – ‘company-owned seafarers’ and ‘externally hired seafarers’. Externally hiredseafarers, though in precarious employment, are offered higher salaries in place of socialinsurance coverage. By contrast, company-owned seafarers are paid less, though enjoy socialinsurance arranged by agencies. This strategy serves to segment the seafarer labour market, conceal the level playing field, and help agencies recruit seafarers cost-effectively, though inviolation of labour rights. This paper argues …

Revisiting The Innovation–Export Entry Link Through A Configuration Approach, Carmen Lopez, Haddoud M Yacine, Dulekha Kasturiratne
Plymouth Business School
Findings on the innovation–export entry nexus remain inconclusive, which may be attributable to methodological issues. Most research has focused on the separate effects of single predictors and has investigated only one or two types of innovation. However, firms’ exporting behavior is complex, and is likely to be determined by interactions between innovation types. Drawing on resource orchestration theory, we adopt a configuration approach to uncover combinations of innovation types (considered here as resources) associated with exporting, rather than investigating them in isolation. The study incorporates four types of innovation: product, process, organizational and marketing innovation. The findings from a sample …

Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) is a neurodegenerative condition where speech and language deficits are the initial and most prominent symptoms. There are three recognized PPA variants with distinctive speech-language features, areas of atrophy, and underlying neuropathology. In the early stages of all variants, language symptoms may be very mild, such that they can only be seen on more complex and generative tasks (e.g., discourse production) rather than naming, repetition, etc. Previous work by Dalton et al. (2020) focused on MCA and Core Lexicon demonstrated that, compared to HCs, PWPPAs produced discourse that was less informative and efficient, with fewer typical …

Introduction: Social isolation impairs physical and mental health, particularly among the elderly. As Parkinson’s disease (PD) usually affects the elderly, we hypothesized that social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic could exacerbate non-motor symptoms of PD. This survey aimed to assess the impact of social isolation on self- or proxy-reported symptoms PD during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: The survey was distributed online between 01/06/21 and 02/27/21 among 7,109 subscribers of the Parkinson and Movement Disorders Alliance (PMD Alliance) newsletter. It was open only to people with PD (PwP) and Care Partners (CP, defined as main caregivers of PwP, and serving as …

: In this paper we prove that Neutrosophic Statistics is an extension of the Interval Statistics, since it may deal with all types of indeterminacies (with respect to the data, inferential procedures, probability distributions, graphical representations, etc.), it allows the reduction of indeterminacy, and it uses the neutrosophic probability that is more general than imprecise and classical probabilities, and has more detailed corresponding probability density functions. While Interval Statistics only deals with indeterminacy that can be represented by intervals. And we respond to the arguments by Woodall et al. [1]. We show that not all indeterminacies (uncertainties) may be represented …

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
In this paper, Neutrosophic definitions and properties of some special number sequences which are frequently found in the science literature, called Neutrosophic Number Sequences (NNSq) via Horadam sequence are studied for the first time. Especially for Neutrosophic Fibonacci (NFNq) and Neutrosophic Lucas (NLNq) number sequences, fundamental properties and identities such as Ruggles, Honsberger, Cassini, Catalan, d’Ocagne, and Tagiuri are given. In addition, Neutrosophic definitions of the sequences of Pell (NPNq), Pell-Lucas (NPLNq), Jacobsthal (NJNq), Jacobsthal-Lucas (NJLNq), Mersenne (NMNq), Mersenne-Lucas (NMLNq), Balancing (NBNq), and Lucas-Balancing (NLBNq) numbers are introduced. Besides defining these numbers and their sequences, since fuzzy and intuitionistic fuzzy …

This book is inspired by a German theoretical physicist, Sabine Hossenfelder’s publication: “Lost in Mathematics”. Her book seems to question highly mathematical and a lot of abstraction in the development of physics and cosmology studies nowadays. There is clear tendency that in recent decades, the physics science has been predominated by such an advanced mathematics, which at times sounding more like acrobatics approach to a reality. Through books by senior mathematical-physicists like Unzicker and Peter Woit, we know that the answer of TOE is not in superstring theories or other variations of such 26 dimensional bosonic string theory, of which …

This collection of published papers at International Journal of Neutrosophic Science actually began with just a simple request by Dr. Broumi Said, the editor of IJNS, to us, to submit an article for his new journal. Then we submitted a series of new articles discussing various applications of Neutrosophic Logic, a new kind of logic as developed by one of us (FS). We explore a wide range of subject, from Godel’s incompleteness theorem, to possible technocalypse and neutro-futurology, and also additional sections. Hopefully you will find these articles interesting for better understanding of nature.
