Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The study aimed to validate two-step procedure PRP protocol and assess the effect on skin healing process in rats treated with PRP and/or HA nanogel. A total of 46 Wistar rats were enrolled in the study. PRPwas produced and its hematological parameters were examined. Six skin defects were created and topicals (control, PRP, HA, PRP/HA, PRP/HA cream, and cream) were applied to the wounds. The progression of wound reduction was photographed daily, and calcutated to wound area. Skin samples were collected according to sampling timepoints: day 0, 3, 7,10, and 14, and stained for histological grading. The platelet (2457.15 $ …
Sustainable Energy Transition In Thailand: Drivers, Barriers And Challenges Of Waste-To-Energy At Krabi Province, Chariya Senpong, Dawan Wiwattanadate
Sustainable Energy Transition In Thailand: Drivers, Barriers And Challenges Of Waste-To-Energy At Krabi Province, Chariya Senpong, Dawan Wiwattanadate
Applied Environmental Research
Waste-to-Energy (WtE) has been considered as an option to eliminate Krabi’s problems of municipal solid waste (MSW) management. A survey on WtE potential as well as key drivers, barriers, and challenges to overcome the barriers was conducted in this study. The study found high WtE potential due to huge amount of many years accumulated MSW in couple with the increasing trend of new daily waste generation. Meanwhile, Krabi is an island having land limitation for landfill. The urgent need to eliminate the huge amount of MSW has become a key driver for WtE implementation. One more key driver of WtE …

“Only As Strong As We All Make It:” The Limitations Of Fargo’S Civil Defense During The Early Cold War (1950-1964), Aaron Rudebusch
History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies
In this thesis, I argue that civil defense failed to take hold in the United States because it required local communities to take responsibility for protective measures. Fargo, North Dakota provides a case study for this analysis. The first section examines how Fargo adopted many practices from federal, state, and municipal civil defense organizations in the early 1950s, but struggled to implement them due to volunteer shortages. The second section explains how the hydrogen bomb forced officials to revise civil defense policies. It also details efforts by congressional and private bodies to increase federal responsibility for civil defense. The third …
Empowering Biosemiotics, Charles Lassiter
Empowering Biosemiotics, Charles Lassiter
Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
One way to understand the basic semiotic relation is that a sign-vehicle signifies an object to an interpretant. Biosemioticians sometimes talk about this relationship in terms of “codes”. When thinking about this relationship in the context of language, a natural move is to conceptualize semiotic relationships among speakers, meanings, and utterances as codes: speakers encode messages in sentences, which are then decoded by an interpreter. This view of communication is inconsistent with core tenets of a distributed approach to language, which holds that language is an embodied and encultured activity taking place across multiple timescales. I argue that a neo-Aristotelian …
Exploratory Analysis Of Mass Shooting Offenders In U.S. Journalism, Dominic Davis
Exploratory Analysis Of Mass Shooting Offenders In U.S. Journalism, Dominic Davis
Criminal Justice and Political Science
Mass shootings are commonplace in media. The media reports as to why the events happened, often within days or hours. These reasons attributed often lead to political debates on how to deter future mass casualty events. The portrayal by the media is important because their perceptions influence the perceptions of their audience. As of beginning this thesis, there is a lack of research utilizing qualitative analysis to analyze the offender reports using large datasets from the media. This thesis is an exploratory analysis and examines the number of times the offender's name is mentioned to determine whether there are sufficient …
The Circle Of Life: The Role Of Architecture In The Embodiment Of Grief, Ashton Barta
The Circle Of Life: The Role Of Architecture In The Embodiment Of Grief, Ashton Barta
Architecture Theses
If it is true that we understand ourselves through the other, is it possible that a piece of ourselves is therefore within the other? How has distancing ourselves from the death of others impacted the understanding of the self? Once an essential part of the public realm, death has been increasingly reduced to an efficient process in our modern economic lives. With it has faded away our participation in the symbolic and ritualistic acts that ensured the reciprocal influence of the dead on the living. In their absence, we have gained an aversion which has generated a distance in the …
The Old Soul Of Design, Riley Longnecker
The Old Soul Of Design, Riley Longnecker
Architecture Theses
Can the critique of modern dwelling be resolved through the restoration and integration of old architecture and the stories it carries? And can these pieces of historic architecture be reshaped to bridge time and place? Following the critique given by several philosophers and cultural critics, there is a distinct neglect for the stories of historic architecture which contributes to the disconcerting attempt to dwell within our modern cities. Considering the German philosopher, Martin Heidegger’s, critique in his essay Building Dwelling Thinking, is it possible that our technology has advanced so far that we have forgotten what came before us, that …
Emergency Response Architecture: Upgrading The National Guard Response Infrastructure, Adam Reynolds
Emergency Response Architecture: Upgrading The National Guard Response Infrastructure, Adam Reynolds
Architecture Theses
Military conflict and natural disasters are sometimes unavoidable leading to human casualties and damage to building infrastructure. Military conflicts are human nature, they are a part of our history and will continue to happen in our future. Natural disasters destroy lives and homes across the world and have been increasingly more common due to climate change. We are often out of control when these tragedies strike leading us to panic in need of emergency response. Our emergency response is one of the only things we can control during military conflict and natural disasters. When we respond we attempt to save …
Reservoir Recreation Analysis: The Effect Of Reservoir Management Agency On Recreation Participation, Mary Mena Boateng
Reservoir Recreation Analysis: The Effect Of Reservoir Management Agency On Recreation Participation, Mary Mena Boateng
Agribusiness and Applied Economics
Dams and reservoirs are created to provide flood control, water storage for irrigation and water supply, recreation, and hydroelectric generation. Most US reservoirs provide recreation in some form. However, there are concerns that certain reservoir/dam managers do a better job in providing recreation than others. Some agencies that manage land riparian to US reservoirs, such as the National Park Service (NPS), are dedicated to recreation development. Other agencies such as the Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) might not be interested in catering to the additional demands of recreators as a stakeholder group. Management actions such as boat access, waterfront land, …
Kisspeptins: Airway Remodeling In Asthma, Niyati Borkar
Kisspeptins: Airway Remodeling In Asthma, Niyati Borkar
Pharmacy
Asthma is a chronic respiratory disorder that affects people of all ages. Sex and gender disparity in asthma is recognized and suggests a modulatory role for sex steroids, particularly estrogen. However, there is a dichotomous role of estrogen in airway remodeling, making it unclear whether sex hormones are protective or detrimental in asthma and suggesting a need to explore mechanisms upstream or independent of estrogen. Kisspeptins (Kp) are a novel peptide existing upstream of sex steroids and function as a crucial regulator of puberty. Kp via KISS1R are further implicated in the sex steroid biogenesis via action on the gonadotrophins. …
Molecular Mapping Of Qtl For Genetic Transformation-Related Trait And Crispr/Cas9-Mediated Gene Editing In Wheat, Anil Karmacharya
Molecular Mapping Of Qtl For Genetic Transformation-Related Trait And Crispr/Cas9-Mediated Gene Editing In Wheat, Anil Karmacharya
Plant Pathology
Plant transformation is a valuable tool for gene characterization and crop improvement. However, wheat transformation is greatly impacted by genotype dependency for successful regeneration of the transgenic plants. For improving disease resistance in wheat, targeting host genes for disease susceptibility has become one of the most attractive strategies. This study aimed to 1) identify the QTL associated with a genetic transformation-related trait (plant regeneration capability from calli derived from immature embryos); 2) targeting the wheat Tsn1 gene for susceptibility to tan spot disease, using CRISPR/Cas9 vector cassette delivered by Agrobacterium and particle bombardment mediated transformation; 3) targeting wheat TaHRC gene …
Understanding The Mode Of Action Of Essential Oil Nanoemulsions To Inhibit Fusarium Growth And Mycotoxin Production In Cereal, Haiyang Jiang
Understanding The Mode Of Action Of Essential Oil Nanoemulsions To Inhibit Fusarium Growth And Mycotoxin Production In Cereal, Haiyang Jiang
Plant Sciences
Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a commonly occurred mycotoxin in cereal-based food, which is mainly produced by Fusarium spp. in the field. It is unfeasible to entirely avoid DON contamination in cereal grains with good agricultural practices. Therefore, it is of great importance to have a strategy for preventing DON contamination in our final food products. In recent years, utilization of plant extracts such as essential oils (EOs) as antifungal and mycotoxin inhibitory agents in foods have gained popularity. Depending on the EO type and chemical composition of EOs, the antifungal and mycotoxin inhibitory efficacies of different EOs might be varied. In …
Optimal Resource Allocation To Minimize Last Mile Delivery Costs, Raghavan Srinivasan
Optimal Resource Allocation To Minimize Last Mile Delivery Costs, Raghavan Srinivasan
Transportation Logistics and Finance
This study focusses on a decision-making tool to assist an organization in planning for capacity needed for the Last Mile Delivery (LMD) services which is the most expensive part of the entire supply chain. Considering the use of Crowdsourcing for Logistics (CSL), the decision-making tool’s objective is to provide an optimal combination of fulltime, seasonal and CSL resources that lead to minimum operational LMD costs and meet the variable demand. To achieve this, a three phased approach is used, where in the first analytical phase an expected cost model is numerically validated. In the second stochastic program phase, the capacity …

Where Have All The Children Gone? A Review Of The Presence Of Children Under 6 Years In Leisure Publication Outlets, Rachel A. Mcgovern, Ericka J. Olschewski, Camilla Hodge
Faculty Publications
We conducted a focused search of nine pre-determined leisure journals to (1) determine the prevalence and scope of research on children younger than 6 years (i.e., young children) published in leisure- focused outlets, (2) describe study designs and research methods used to study this age group, (3) tabulate definitions of child leisure, and (4) provide an overview of the studies’ findings. Overall, findings indicate a marked absence of young children from leisure research. Only 28 articles in almost half a century of leisure journal publications met inclusion criteria. Eight studies focused on children as the subject or participant, five articles …
Back From The Future: Mediation And Prediction Of Events Uncertainty Through Event-Driven Models (Edms), Samuel Ogbeibu, James Gaskin
Back From The Future: Mediation And Prediction Of Events Uncertainty Through Event-Driven Models (Edms), Samuel Ogbeibu, James Gaskin
Faculty Publications
The event-driven model (EDM) is an emerging concept in human behavioural research, and understanding how EDMs can promote theory development remains a fundamental quest of predictive science. Traditionally, researchers have heavily depended upon theory confirmation and the inclusion of mediating constructs to clarify uncertainty associated with plausible events (e.g. political, socio-economic, technological, environmental). Though this approach has pushed the field forward, it has also steered mediation research towards largely ignoring the fundamental role of prediction as a key for better understanding future events represented by EDMs. Additionally, emerging research using partial least squares structural equation modelling to execute prediction-oriented analysis …
Transformational It Leaders And Digital Innovation: The Moderating Effect Of Formal It Governance, Linda M. Pittenger, Nicholas Berente, James Gaskin
Transformational It Leaders And Digital Innovation: The Moderating Effect Of Formal It Governance, Linda M. Pittenger, Nicholas Berente, James Gaskin
Faculty Publications
Does formal IT governance encourage innovation in the traditional domains of the IT function at the expense of new forms of “digital” innovation? We report on a study of 158 IT managers and leaders to understand the conditions under which transformational IT leadership can drive innovation in traditional forms of IT, as well as in the emerging “digital” domain. We find that highly formal IT governance practices can reduce ability of transformational IT managers and leaders to innovate in both domains, and this effect is greater for digital innovation. In stable cultures the moderation effect was strengthened, while insignificant in …

Information Filtering In Electronic Networks Of Practice: An Fmri Investigation Of Expectation (Dis)Confirmation, Kelly J. Fadel, Thomas O. Meservy, C. Brock Kirwan
Faculty Publications
Online forums sponsored by electronic networks of practice (ENPs) have become an important platform for technology-mediated knowledge exchange, yet relatively little is known about how ENP participants filter and evaluate the information they encounter on these forums. This study integrates perspectives from expectation confirmation theory, prospect theory, and neuroscience research to explore how ENP forum filtering judgments are influenced when expectations formed on the basis of contextual cues are confirmed or disconfirmed by the examination of solution quality. We summarize six different models of expectation confirmation explored in previous IS literature and report the results of a neuroimaging experiment using …
Providing Postpartum Depression Resources At A Local Wic Agency, Katie Marie Casey
Providing Postpartum Depression Resources At A Local Wic Agency, Katie Marie Casey
Nursing
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant mental illness that impacts 12.5% of all postpartum women. In women with low-income, the prevalence increases to 25% and 40-60% of low-income, adolescent mothers report depressive symptoms. Postpartum depression also presents a significant early risk to healthy child development and the bond between mother and child. Symptoms of PPD can present as soon as 2 weeks postpartum and as late as 3 years postpartum. Unfortunately, once delivered, women are typically not assessed by a medical provider until 6 weeks postpartum. Therefore, targeting additional opportunities for PPD education in low-income women may play a role …

Signals From On High And The Power Of Growth Mindset: A Natural Field Experiment In Attracting Minorities To High-Profile Position, Jeffrey A. Flory, Andreas Leibbrandt, Christina Rott, Olga B. Stoddard
Faculty Publications
We conduct a large-scale natural field experiment with a Fortune 500 company to test several approaches to attract minorities to high-profile positions. 5,000 prospective applicants were randomized into treatments varying a portion of recruiting materials. We find that self-selection at two early-career stages exhibits a substantial race gap. Importantly, we show that this gap can be strongly influenced by several treatments, with some increasing application rates by minorities by 40 percent and others being particularly effective for minority women. The heterogeneities we find by gender, race, and career stage shed light on the underlying drivers of self-selection barriers among minorities.
“It’S Like Bluetooth. I Felt Like I Was In Rhythm With Him:” An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (Ipa) Of The Lived Experiences Of Commercially Sexually Exploited Youth (Csey) In A Residential Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (Eap) Program, Jenna Hershberger
Education
Human sex trafficking is a grave human rights violation that impacts the dignity of millions both globally and in the United States. The International Labor Organization estimates 4.5 million children are trafficked around the global at any given time (International Labour Organization [ILO], 2017). Within the United States, approximately two in five human trafficking offenses reported to federally funded human trafficking task forces from 2008 to 2010 involved the sex trafficking of minors (Banks & Kyckelhahn, 2011). Childhood traumas, including childhood sexual abuse and rape, emotional abuse, running away from home, and family members’ involvement in sex work or friends …

“I Am A Priest”: The Construction And Adaptability Of Identity In The Last Report On The Miracles At Little No Horse, Majalisa Rose Sarkar
English
The following paper investigates the construction and adaptability of identity, especially in regard to gender, religion, and culture in Louise Erdrich’s novel The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse. The goal of this paper is to explore how a broader understanding of one aspect of identity, can lead to a more complex understanding of other aspects of identity. This work performs textual analysis to examine how the character Agnes/Father Damien’s gender and their religious persona are constructed in the novel as they blend their religious beliefs and their masculinity/femininity as well as how this causes them to …
Technological Self-Sufficiency And The Role Of Novelty Traps, Rochelle C. Dreyfuss, Daniel Benoliel
Technological Self-Sufficiency And The Role Of Novelty Traps, Rochelle C. Dreyfuss, Daniel Benoliel
Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law
The COVID pandemic has demonstrated the tragic consequences of technological dependency. Unable to manufacture vaccines for themselves, developing countries must rely on obtaining supplies from other nations. While strong arguments have been made to waive international obligations under the TRIPS Agreement to permit these countries to freely use COVID-related patented inventions, it is not clear that this move would produce sufficient vaccines to meet global demand. Considerable scholarship has been devoted to the question of how to help these countries reach the technological frontier and become technologically independent. In this Article, we identify a novel source of their problem: a …
A Modern Reconceptualization Of Copyrights As Public Rights, Matthew L. Pangle
A Modern Reconceptualization Of Copyrights As Public Rights, Matthew L. Pangle
Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law
Copyright law is at a crossroads. In the wake of Oil States Energy Servs., LLC v. Greene’s Energy Grp., LLC, the patent, copyright, and intellectual property regimes as a whole, are primed for a modern reconceptualization. At the heart of this reconceptualization is the distinction between public rights, those vindicated by public offices for the public good, and private rights, those vindicated by private citizens for their exclusive government-granted monopolies. Thanks to Oil States, patent rights now exist in two separate bundles-—a public bundle including the patent grant itself and a private bundle consisting of a patent owner’s exclusivity rights. …

Gambling On The Blockchain: How The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act Has Opened The Door For Offshore Crypto Casinos, Samuel H. Brown Vii
Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law
Online cryptocurrency casinos have seen a dramatic rise in popularity over the past thirty years as the rate of ownership of cryptocurrencies has risen almost as quickly as the US monetary value of a single Bitcoin. Current US laws and regulations are outdated; the only piece of federal legislation that provides oversight in the area of virtual gambling originated in 2006, more than fifteen years before the publication of this Note. Previous scholarship suggests that a lack of federal action has resulted in a surge of criminal activity, such as money laundering and tax evasion, as well as significant missed …

Grey State, Blue City: Defending Local Control Against Confederate “Historical Preservation”, Sage Snider
Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law
Confederate monuments have become lightning rods across the American landscape. While these ubiquitous symbols have spread Lost Cause propaganda for over one hundred years, they have also instigated unprecedented protest and violence since the 2015 Charleston massacre, 2017 Charlottesville rally, and 2020 George Floyd murder. In response, southern state legislatures have passed preemptory “statue statutes,” laws that obstruct left-leaning cities from removing Confederate monuments. This Note compares the political and legal strategies cities and citizens have used to overcome these legal barriers, both in opposition to individual monuments and statue statutes themselves. Using Tennessee’s Historical Commission waiver process as a …
Big Brother Is Scanning: The Widespread Implementation Of Alpr Technology In America’S Police Forces, Yash Dattani
Big Brother Is Scanning: The Widespread Implementation Of Alpr Technology In America’S Police Forces, Yash Dattani
Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law
Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPRs) are an increasingly popular tool in police departments across the United States. At its core, ALPR technology functions in a relatively simple manner. The technology has two major components: the actual scanners, which record license plates, and the databases which collect, compile, and analyze this information for officers to access at the click of a button. Although this technology first came to the United States in 1998 as a form of rudimentary border security, its purpose and capabilities have rapidly grown. Now, in 2022, ALPR has evolved into a frighteningly powerful piece of technology, potentially …

Street Protests In Thailand During 2019 To 2022, Wending Zhang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The Covid-19 pandemic was adversely affecting Thailand amidst strong attacks especially by the youth groups on the government. The main force of Thai youth protests has made street protests in Thailand different from those of the past. By problematizing this emerging phenomenon, this paper proposes to tackle two research questions. How are the protests in Thailand during the Covid-19 pandemic different from those the past? How does the massive outbreak of protests generate implications for present and future Thailand? Therefore, this paper combines the theories of Radical Politics, Digital Activism and Contentious Politics, adopts qualitative research and quantitative research, mainly …
The Emergence Of The Non-Aligned Foreign Policy Of Burma From The End Of The Second World War To Bandung Conference, Aung Kyaw Min
The Emergence Of The Non-Aligned Foreign Policy Of Burma From The End Of The Second World War To Bandung Conference, Aung Kyaw Min
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Burma has been practicing non-aligned foreign policy since its independence. Most of the literature studied on Burma's foreign policy argued that Burma's non-aligned foreign policy was initiated around 1950. As Burma became a colony under the British Empire from 1886 to 1948, the experience of colonialism might also play an essential role in foreign relations in Burma. After independence, Burma also faced numerous challenges, such as insurgency problems. Therefore, the primary objective of this study is to examine the emergence of the ideological foundation of the non-aligned foreign policy of Burma after the Second World War. Moreover, this study will …
The Chinese Association In Thailand And Its Development From 1907 To 1963, Daniel Jiang
The Chinese Association In Thailand And Its Development From 1907 To 1963, Daniel Jiang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This research argues the history of the Chinese Association in Thailand (CAT) is strongly connected to the transformation of self-identity among the pro-Republic of China Thai Chinese. Since the foundation of CAT in 1907 by the Tongmenghui members, the association itself represents the rise of Chinese nationalism amongst ethnic Chinese in Siam. The Chinese nationalism in Thailand was challenged by several major factors during the following periods: first was the rise of Siamese nationalism that clashed with the Chinese nationalism since the reign of Rama VI in the 1910s; second was the anti-Chinese policies during the second World War, as …

A Comparison Of Imbalanced Data Handling Methods For Pre-Trained Model In Multi-Label Classification Of Stack Overflow, Arisa Umparat
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Tag classification is essential in Stack Overflow. Instead of combining through pages or replies of irrelevant information, users can easily and quickly pinpoint relevant posts and answers using tags. Since User-submitted posts can have multiple tags, classifying tags in Stack Overflow can be challenging. This results in an imbalance problem between labels in the whole labelset. Pretrained deep learning models with small datasets can improve tag classification accuracy. Common multi-label resampling techniques with machine learning classifiers can also fix this issue. Still, few studies have explored which resampling technique can improve the performance of pre-trained deep models for predicting tags. …
