Expanding The Conceptualization And Applied Role Of Shame, Nathaniel Michael Burrow
Expanding The Conceptualization And Applied Role Of Shame, Nathaniel Michael Burrow
Dissertations
Prior research has shown shame to be a key component of a variety of mental health issues, symptoms, and disorders; however, a growing body of research also found it to be integral in the process of seeking to atone, ameliorate, or repair a prior transgression. This study sought to further explore what factors influenced this process. By utilizing a posttest-only control group experimental design and the Gausel and Leach (2011) model as a framework, this study was able to operationalize and investigate the role shame had in motivating a prosocial versus self-defensive response. Additionally, this study advanced this model by …
Integrated Grating Couplers On-A-Chip: Characterizations And Applications, Xuemei Wang
Integrated Grating Couplers On-A-Chip: Characterizations And Applications, Xuemei Wang
Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
We demonstrate two applications based on grating coupled phase matching to a slab waveguide: lab-on-a-chip spectrometer using a transversely chirped grating and indoor lidar plenoptic sensor array for Time of flight (ToF) position mapping system. In the first application, a chirped grating waveguide coupler serves as a spatially dependent narrow-band filter. The transversely-chirped-input grating is fabricated on a SiO2-Si3N4-SiO2 waveguide atop a Si substrate by interferometric lithography. Light with wavelength from 400- nm to 700 nm couples into Si3N4 waveguide through transversely chirped grating incident at a 33.5⁰ angle and …

The degree of changes and effects reaches severe levels that become urgent to figure out the impacts and find solutions to stop or mitigate the negative consequences. …
Eluication Of Lipid Metabolic Pathways In Differentiating Giardia Lamblia Using High Resolution Mass Spectrometry, Cameron Ellis
Eluication Of Lipid Metabolic Pathways In Differentiating Giardia Lamblia Using High Resolution Mass Spectrometry, Cameron Ellis
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Giardia lamblia is an intestinal protozoan found worldwide, including the U.S. This parasite exists in two morphologic stages - a replicative trophozoite and a relatively dormant yet viable cyst. While exposures of cysts to gastric acid during passage through the human stomach induces excystation, factors in the small intestine, where trophozoites colonize trigger encystation or cyst formation. Transformation into cyst stage is essential for Giardia to survive in the environment for months before infecting new hosts. Because of its small genome size (11.7 Mb), metabolic pathways in Giardia are highly reduced. As far as lipid metabolism is concerned, only limited …

Characterization Of 3d Stereolithography (Sla) Printed Polymer For Autonomous-Flow Microfluidic Devices, Michelle Gamboa
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
3D Stereolithography (SLA) printing is a high-throughput, precise and reproducible manufacturing platform which makes it a desirable technique to develop microfluidic devices for bioanalytical applications. However, limited information exists regarding the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the polymer resins used in 3D SLA printing. This project demonstrates the characterization of a commercially available 3D SLA printed resin polymer used to develop an autonomous-flow (self-driven) microfluidic device. In this investigation, time-dependent materials characterization was done on the Formlabs clear V4 resin to observe changes in mechanical and surface properties. The clear, printed polymer was analyzed with attenuated total reflectance (ATR), …
Neoglycoproteins As Potential Biomarkers And Vaccines For Chagas Disease, Elisa Garcia Carvajal
Neoglycoproteins As Potential Biomarkers And Vaccines For Chagas Disease, Elisa Garcia Carvajal
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Trypanosoma cruzi, the causal agent of Chagas disease (CD), currently affects 6-8 million people worldwide, predominantly in Latin America, where the parasite is endemic. The treatment of CD is based on two drugs, benznidazole (BZN) and nifurtimox (NFX). These drugs cause adverse effects and are more effective in the acute phase of the disease. Conventional serology assays can be used for diagnosis, but they are not suitable for determining chemotherapy effectiveness because patients take approximately 10-20 years to exhibit negative seroconversion. Although CD has become a global health problem, specific biomarkers are still needed for the follow-up of chemotherapy and …

Tools To Advance Environmental Monitoring, Wetland Restoration And Education In The Desert Southwest, Anna Elisa Pina
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The relatively rare freshwater ecosystems in the southwestern United States serve as biodiversity hotspots, yet they are among the most threatened systems in the world due to human impacts and climate change. Despite their importance to this arid landscape, the aquatic communities of desert wetlands remain relatively understudied. To restore and create new wetland habitats, effluent is becoming a more commonly used water source for these habitats. However, the effects of byproducts within the treated wastewater on these unique systems have not been well studied. In this study, we aim to better understand the factors that drive water quality and …

Faunal Comparison And Analysis Of The Blufftown Formation-Cusseta Sand Contact At Hannahatchee Creek, Georgia, Seth Fradella
Honors Theses
The origin of fossil material in the highly fossiliferous bed above the Upper Cretaceous (Campanian) Blufftown Formation-Cusseta Sand contact at Hannahatchee Creek, Georgia, has long been a subject of scientific curiosity; however, no research has yet been conducted to specifically investigate discrepancies between the fossil assemblages of the upper Blufftown Formation and the basal Cusseta Sand, which overlies it unconformably. In the most recent published hypothesis, Case and Schwimmer (1988) propose that the basal Cusseta Sand contains a mixture of original fauna as well as material reworked and redeposited from the underlying Blufftown Formation, resulting in a lag deposit above …

Tuberculosis (TB) is a communicable disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). It was the leading cause of human death generated by a single infectious agent before the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Mtb has a special mechanism to evade the hostâ??s immune system and utilize macrophages as reservoirs. Latent TB infections have been a threat to public health. Liposome has been widely used for drug delivery. Immunoliposomes are special liposome carriers coated with ligands, such as antigens, targeting certain cells or organs to regulate the uptake of liposome. By constructing the liposome components, or surface modification, cargo release of liposome can be …

Ready Player?: Sex And Race In Video Games, Matthew Michael Espino
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
As a child, I had always been fascinated with video games. Sure, I used video games as a way to relieve stress mainly, but I found myself drawn into the worlds that I was immersing myself in. These worlds are filled with social structures, cultures, governments, even religions. Once I started doing research in college, I took a bit of a step back from the games I loved and took a broader look at what I was playing. Specifically, I wanted to see what these worlds had to offer in terms of representation of races, gender, and non-human characters. These …

Design Of A Hemi-Anechoic Chamber For Acoustic Testing Of Hearing Devices And Development Of Custom-Designed 3d Printed Pinnae For Accurate Representation Of The Anatomical Frequency Response, Hector Hugo Estrada Medinilla
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Sound localization is the capacity to identify the general location from which a sound is originating. The primary anatomical feature responsible for the ability to localize sound is the external portion of the ear, also known as the auricle or pinna. This faculty is significantly hindered when the ear is obstructed, as is the case with hearing protection devices (HPD), which act as a barrier between sound waves and the ear canal. In the case of electronic HPDs, certain frequencies are entirely filtered out by a digital sound processor (DSP) while the remaining frequencies are delivered directly into the ear …

Our group has shown that reduction of titanium complexes supported by the sterically encumbering N-donor ligands 1,3â??bis(Dipp)imidazolinâ??2â??iminato (ImDippNâ??) and ketimine guanidinate (ketGuan = [(tBuC=N)C(NDipp)2]-) gives access to electron rich platforms featuring a metal coordinated, reduced, dearomatized arene substituent, which act as an electronic reservoir capable of facilitating multi-electron transfer chemistry driven by the rearomatization driving force. For instance, the arene-masked Ti(II) synthon (DippketGuan)(η6-ImDippN)Ti (Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) (TiDipp) is a versatile and potent one- and two-electron reductant capable of distinctive late-metal type reactivity such as transfer hydrogenation and catalytic olefin hydrogenation. Interestingly, TiDipp can mediate the reversible cleavage of thiophene and, …
Chihuahuan Desert Rock Pool Community Assemblages: Patterns Of Taxonomic Diversity, Joseph Lee Mcdaniel
Chihuahuan Desert Rock Pool Community Assemblages: Patterns Of Taxonomic Diversity, Joseph Lee Mcdaniel
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
As climate change continues to become more prevalent, increasing temperatures and altering precipitation patterns will disrupt the environmental balance of ecosystems and spark the imminent threat of a 6th mass extinction event. Many researchers believe this has already begun, as losses for numerous taxonomic clades have been well documented; however, the loss of invertebrates is still unknown and may be much more severe than those of other animal clades. A significant factor contributing to the shortfall of invertebrate biodiversity loss is rooted in the lack of understanding of the diversity and distribution of these animals. There is still much to …

Characterization Of Esxa/Esxb Heterodimer Membrane Interaction With A Novel Popc/Popg Liposome Model, Salvador Vazquez Vazquez Reyes
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
EsxA and EsxB are co-secreted as a heterodimer and have been shown to play critical roles in phagosome rupture and translocation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis into the cytosol. Current in vitro studies support a model in which the EsxA:EsxB heterodimer is dissociated upon acidification, which might allow EsxA insertion into liposome membranes. While the membrane permeabilizing activity (MPA) of EsxA has been well characterized in liposomes composed of di-oleoyl-phosphatidylcholine (DOPC), the MPA of EsxA:EsxB heterodimer has not been detected with the DOPC liposome. In this study, we established a new in vitro membrane assay to test the MPA of EsxA and …

Biological Interaction Of Mn-Based Nanomaterials With Capsicum Annuum L. Under Salinity Stress, Yuqing Ye
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The foliar application of nanomaterials as a method to overcome abiotic stress is relatively new compared to their use as fertilizers or pesticides in agricultural practice. It is also vital to understand the interface between leaf and nanomaterials, as nanomaterials might translocate into crop edible tissues, thus, causing potential toxicity in living beings during food consumption. In this dissertation, salt-stressed Capsicum annuum L was exposed to manganese (Mn) -based nanomaterials (Mn2O3 nanoparticles (MnNPs) and graphene quantum dots doped with Mn (GQD-Mn)) at different stages (seed germination and full life cycle). The dissertation focuses on investigating the mechanism of how Mn-based …

Quantitative measurement of the degree of hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is crucial for developing therapeutic strategies for its treatment. We hypothesized that clearance of fluorescent dye through bile metabolism may reflect the degree of hepatic IRI. In this study, we investigated sodium fluorescein clearance kinetics in blood and bile for quantifying the degree of hepatic IRI. Warm ischemia times (WITs) of 0, 30, or 60 min followed by 1 h or 4 h of reperfusion, were applied to the median and lateral lobes of the liver in Sprague-Dawley rats. Subsequently, 2 mg/kg of sodium fluorescein was injected intravenously, and blood …

Reflections On The Adaptation Of A Postgraduate Degree In Water Management From In-Person To Remote Delivery, Murray Clamen, Emma Anderson, Johanna Dipple, Jan Adamowski
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
In early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic spurred the rapid adaptation of university course delivery to an online format. Though in-person delivery partially resumed in the Fall of 2021, future conditions may favor a return to, or addition of, remote delivery. It is therefore important for instructors, program directors, and institutions to capitalize on this learning opportunity and reflect on adaptation measures’ successes (and failures) to inform future online course design. The reworking of McGill University's Master of Science Program in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) provides a case study to evaluate the adaptation of remote teaching of water resource management. …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The invasive mustard species Sahara mustard (Brassica tournefortii), garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) and elongated mustard (Brassica elongata) negatively impact a variety of ecological systems across the state of Utah. The distribution of these species in Utah is relatively limited at the current time. If prompt action is taken, it may be possible to contain and manage these species before irreparable ecological and agricultural damage occurs. For this reason, all three mustards are listed by the State of Utah as weeds of high priority for management.
This project tested multiple strategies to determine effective species-specific …
High-Isolation Antenna Technique For Cubesat-Borne, Continuous-Waveform Radar, Logan E. Voigt
High-Isolation Antenna Technique For Cubesat-Borne, Continuous-Waveform Radar, Logan E. Voigt
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Radar is important in target tracking, imaging, and weather prediction applications. As technology is increasingly miniaturized, there is a push for smaller radar. Research and exploration in outer space also benefit from small, low-power technologies. The NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s RainCube was the first successful CubeSat-borne radar. A CubeSat is a type of small satellite that conforms to specific size and weight standards. Radar technology benefits from additional research on how to further miniaturize radar payloads.
Integrating the transmit and receive antennas on the solar panels removes the need for antenna-deployment mechanisms, preserving space on the CubeSat. This thesis also …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Knowledge of both soil quality and contamination has become increasingly important with the growth of urban agriculture in Utah and the United States as whole. Land is also a common limiting factor in urban agriculture, so it is important to maximize yield and net returns. In order to meet these demands, three studies were conducted across key urban agriculture sites along the Wasatch Front: 1) an urban soil survey to assess soil contamination, 2) an urban soil survey to evaluate macronutrient and salinity levels, and 3) a nitrogen fertilizer management trial for dahlia (Dahlia pinnata), a cut flower …
An Evaluation Of Landscape, Climate, And Management Impacts On Bumble Bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Bombus) In Agroecosystems, Morgan Elizabeth Christman
An Evaluation Of Landscape, Climate, And Management Impacts On Bumble Bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Bombus) In Agroecosystems, Morgan Elizabeth Christman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Bumble bees play pivotal roles in pollinating wild and cultivated plant communities. Unfortunately, bumble bee populations are declining due to disturbances such as landscape conversion and climate change. Additionally, traps used to monitor pest insect populations often capture bumble bees, leading to a concern that trap captures increase bumble bee mortality. First, I studied bumble bee communities based on land cover and weather variables in agricultural fields in Utah. Bumble bee communities were more diverse in agricultural fields with more agricultural land in the surrounding area, low temperatures, and high humidity during the growing season, and less diverse in fields …
