A 23 year-old male came with chief complaint of lower anterior crowding and protrusive lower lip. Dental examination revealed missing teeth 14, 24 and 34 and horizontally impacted 38 and 48. Poor prognosis of tooth 36 was found after evaluation. Anterior cross bite and open bite at his left side occlusion were also seen. In this case, removal of teeth 36 and 38 were selected instead of 44 extraction. Thus the timing and proper sequence of tooth extraction become critical. The biomechanics of tooth movement was designed to ensure that all teeth are in functional occlusion and the lower left …

Relationship Between Orthodontic Treatment And Root Resorption – A Literature Review, Yu-Tnig Wu, Wen-Ken Tai, Hoi-Shing Luk, Chih-Chen Chou, Heng-Ming Mark Chang, Chia-Tze Kao
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
Shorting of tooth or external root resorption that happen during or after completion of orthodontic treatment are troublesome. The root resorption could affect treatment outcome, unstable orthodontic tooth movement and even cause medical dispute. The etiologies of external root resorption could be systemic problems or local factors. The mechanism of external root resorption is still unclear and under investigation. This article reviewed the factors and possible causes on the orthodontic root resorption and discussed the possible role of light emitted diode (LED) biophotostimualtion effects to inhibit the root resorption. The information was provided for orthodontists in daily practice.

With the advances of dental implants, temporary skeletal anchorage devices have now become established orthodontic anchorage aids and launched a new era for clinical orthodontic therapy. Nowadays, orthodontic miniscrews are commonly used in daily practice and demand great stability and high predictability for therapeutic needs. In recent years, numerous publications have investigated multiple factors affecting success rates of orthodontic mini-screws. The aims of this review were to investigate the relationships between timing of loading and implant stability, and the impact of osseointegration on orthodontic mini-screws.
Literature Review: Corticotomy-Assisted Orthodontic Treatment, Lei Kang, Shou-Hsin Kuang, Tzu-Ying Wu
Literature Review: Corticotomy-Assisted Orthodontic Treatment, Lei Kang, Shou-Hsin Kuang, Tzu-Ying Wu
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
Corticotomy-assisted orthodontics (CAOT) can shorten orthodontic treatment time by increasing regional acceleratory phenomenon. The periodontal wound healing caused by corticotomy are similar to the periodontal tissue reaction induced by orthodontic force; if the two phenomena could be accumulated and both enhancing bone remodeling, orthodontic tooth movement should be accelerated theoretically. There are many different kinds of procedures and strategies in the clinical application of corticotomy-assisted orthodontics, but when the cost and benefit ratio for the patients are thoroughly considered, using minimal invasive corticotomy to assist orthodontic treatment may be more practical. As for the clinical efficacy of minimal invasive corticotomy, …

Literature Review: Low Level Laser Therapy In Orthodontics, Meng-Huan Tsai, Hsuan-Yu Shih, Hui-Chen Tsai, Hsuan-Yi Hsiao, Chung-Chen Jane Yao
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
Treatment duration is one of the major determinants for patients receiving orthodontic treatment. To avoid long treatment time, orthodontists have to design sound mechanics meeting the anchorage demands and delivering appropriate force system to the tooth and its supporting tissues. However, the more crucial factors related to the treatment efficiency may lie in the individual biological response which is still largely unknown, to the force system which orthodontists regularly delivered. Low level laser with specific power setting has been shown as a non-invasive adjunctive treatment without obvious side effect for facilitating orthodontic movement in some clinical studies. This article reviews …

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
At present, even if the orthognathic surgical procedure had been improved and the acceptance of surgery increased, the patients and dentists could not be satisfied with simply the recovery of masticatory function. Facial esthetics has become a marked issue. However, everything has its own limitation. There is no single treatment could fulfill all the facial esthetics requirements, not even the orthognathic surgery. If the orthognathic surgery could be combined with other cosmetic surgical procedure, the patients would be more likely to receive relatively compre-hensive treatment. First, this article reviewed the fundamental definition of facial esthetic in psychology. In addition, we …

This work demonstrates that the card shuffling procedure commonly performed in casino poker rooms is insufficient for randomizing a deck of cards. We explore this in the context of Texas Hold’em, which has established itself as the most popular form of poker worldwide over the past few decades. We show the degree to which the resulting distribution of the orderings of all 52 cards in the deck after shuffling is not uniform. Rather, any given card may be substantially more (or less) likely to show up as an important card in the subsequent hand. Additionally, we find that the shuffling …

Ovarian aging is a natural process in females, and it occurs due to an elevated ROS-induced inflammation caused by oxidative stress. SIRT-1 is a metabolic sensor that tightly regulates oxidative and inflammatory responses. However, this regulative function is antagonized by NFκB. Therefore, the objective of this study was to explore the pathways involved in aging and identify the flavonoid compounds from Marsilea crenata that might be useful as SIRT1 activators and NFκB inhibitors. The screening began with exploring the protein-protein interaction in the experimental process using BioGrid, and the role of the flavonoid was evaluated using STITCH. The interaction between …

The envelope protein (E) is a fusion class II protein that is essential for DENV fusion. We use two active compounds derived from commonly used plants in Indonesia: galangin and kaempferide. We ran a docking and 1000 ps molecular dynamic analysis with normal physiological parameters. During the simulation, galangin and kaempferide binding sites fluctuated. But chloroquine has lesser ligand mobility, hence keeping contact with fusion loops, whereas both drugs lose contact with hydrophobic pockets. However, the two active compounds have a more stable ligand configuration. Less than 2 Å alterations were seen in the RMSF simulation of the protein E …

Sewage released from lakeside development can reshape ecological communities. Nearshore periphyton can rapidly assimilate sewage-associated nutrients, leading to increases of filamentous algal abundance, thus altering both food abundance and quality for grazers. In Lake Baikal, a large, ultra-oligotrophic, remote lake in Siberia, filamentous algal abundance has increased near lakeside developments, and localized sewage input is the suspected cause. These shifts are of particular interest in Lake Baikal, where endemic littoral biodiversity is high, lakeside settlements are mostly small, tourism is relatively high (~1.2 million visitors annually), and settlements are separated by large tracts of undisturbed shoreline, enabling investigation of heterogeneity …

Cross-modal approaches to the study of sensory perception, social recognition, cognition, and mental representation have proved fruitful in humans as well as in a variety of other species including toothed whales in revealing equivalencies that suggest that different sensory stimuli associated with objects or individuals may effectively evoke mental representations that are, respectively, object based or individual based. Building on established findings of structural equivalence in the form of spontaneous recognition of complex shapes across the modalities of echolocation and vision and behavior favoring identity echoic–visual cross-modal relationships over associative echoic–visual cross-modal relationships, examinations of transitive inference equivalencies from initially …

This study investigates the relationship between victims of intimate partner violence and legal actors within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Qualitative interviews were conducted with nine participants, eight were advocates for victims and one was an attorney for victims at an advocacy center. Interviewees recall their experience aiding victims both in and out of the courtroom, noting differences depending on how the victim’s race, gender, or sexuality interact with social structures and legal actors. Narratives provided by advocates reveal a difference in treatment for victims of domestic abuse depending on their social categories, including race, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, etc. My analysis …

What play-based learning looks like depends on the subject it is being used in. Overall, it involves hands-on activities and children learning through these activities. These activities can be used to teach/introduce the lesson, or they can be used as a reinforcement. In science, it might be experimenting with cardboard and cars to understand ramps. For math, it might be using manipulatives to learn about shapes. In social studies it could be putting on a puppet show, while in English it might be playing Ispy to find words that begin with the letter p. Three research questions were created to …

The Haunting Of Wright Manor, Katherine Holzman
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The Haunting of Wright Manor explores the fear of the unknown, and more specifically, the hereditary nature of evil. “The phrase ‘nature versus nurture’ was first coined in the mid-1800s by the English Victorian polymath Francis Galton in discussion about the influence of heredity and environment on social advancement”(Serpell 2013), writes Mick Serpell in the British Journal of Pain. Essentially, “Nature versus Nurture” boils down to a debate of which character traits are inherited and which are the result of external environmental factors. Wright Manor’s protagonist, Victoria Mariano, finds herself struggling with the aforementioned debate. At the age of 12, …
“I’M Not Just Made For Men”: How Online Sex Workers Manage Misogyny, Sarah Dellner
“I’M Not Just Made For Men”: How Online Sex Workers Manage Misogyny, Sarah Dellner
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Online sex work, or erotic labor, refers to sexual services that are provided via the Internet for compensation. Views of sex work range from empowering and agentic for sex workers, rife with violence and victimization. Various frameworks (Jones, 2016 Vance, 1984; Weitzer, 2010) examine the balance between these extremes; but often lacks nuance. I examined female and non-binary online sex workers’ experiences with misogyny and how they cope with it. Zoom interviews were conducted with 15 participants ranging from 18 to 33 years old. Using an intersectional feminist lens and thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2020), two overarching themes were …

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a devastating form of dementia with 5 million people suffering from the disease in the United States alone. Thus, there is a need to understand the cause of AD so that therapeutics can be developed to treat it. The greatest risk factor for AD is the APOE gene, which encodes the apolipoprotein Eprotein. Three predominant APOE alleles exist humans, which give rise to three isoforms, called apoE2, E3, and E4. Individuals with apoE4 are ten times more likely to develop AD. In contrast, the apoE2 isoform has a neuroprotective effect and is associated with a 2-fold …
Characterization Of Exosomes And Their Role In Cellular Migration In Chemosensitive And Chemoresistant Ovarian Cancer Cells, Courtney Mceneaney
Characterization Of Exosomes And Their Role In Cellular Migration In Chemosensitive And Chemoresistant Ovarian Cancer Cells, Courtney Mceneaney
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Chemotherapy-resistant cells that remain after primary cancer treatment lead to recurrence and metastasis, resulting in a poor prognosis for patients. Chemoresistant cells were created by our collaborators using the human ovarian cancer cell line, OVCAR8, by selection of cells that survived serial culture with cisplatin, a platinum-based chemotherapeutic. The cisplatin-resistant cells (OVCAR8R) demonstrate a morphology unique from the original cisplatin-sensitive cells (OVCAR8) which could correlate with their difference in aggressiveness. My research goal is to isolate and characterize exosomes from the OVCAR8 and OVCAR8Rlines. Exosomes are small vesicles secreted from cells and contribute to the tumor microenvironment(TME). It has been …
