Coral reefs species represent one-third of all marine species described in the ocean. They are also responsible for providing habitat and support to different species. Recently, Caribbean coral reefs ecosystems have suffered an alarming decrease in their populations as a result of overexploitation. Madracis auretenra in particular, is a widespread shallow coral in marine protected areas (MPAs) of the Caribbean. Due to the important role of MPAs as a biodiversity conservation tool, this species can be used as a model to estimate its dispersion/migration among Caribbean reefs through the use of informative genetic markers (microsatellites) specifically designed for it. Seventeen …

Background: With conventional coral reef conservation methods proving ineffective against intensifying climate change, efforts have focussed on augmenting coral tolerance to warmer water—the primary driver of coral declines. We document coral cover and composition in relation to sea surface temperature (SST) over 25-years, of six marginal reefs in an upwelling area of Costa Rica’s Eastern Tropical Pacific. Methods: Using reef survey data and sea surface temperature (SST) dating back over 25-years, we document coral cover and composition of six marginal reefs in an upwelling area of Costa Rica’s Eastern Tropical Pacific in relation to thermal highs and lows. Results.: A …

Mapping Natural Genetic Variants Associated With Nutrient Response, Kenneth Wilson
Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Biological Sciences Master's Theses
Phenotypic responses to dietary intake affect every individual, yet individuals consuming similar diets frequently display a myriad of different responses. As diet-related disorders are abundant in humans, understanding the means by which an individual’s genetics dictate these physiological responses is essential. Furthermore, dietary restriction has been shown to dramatically increase the length of lifespan in Drosophila melanogaster, but the exact genetic mechanisms governing this response are still not fully understood. In this study, I have used the Drosophila melanogaster Genetic Reference Panel (DGRP) to pinpoint specific quantitative trait loci associated with a number of diet-induced complex traits so as to …

Richter Transformation In Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia With Hypercalcemia And Acute Kidney Injury Presenting As Altered Mental Status: A Case Report, Gersham J. Rainone, Oleg E. Reznik, Yumna Hamid, Alina Popa, Robert Pargament
Transformative Medicine
Introduction: Richter’s transformation is a deadly complication of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) associated with high mortality. This transformation involves the development of an aggressive, diffuse large B cell lymphoma in the setting of a chronic, underlying case of CLL. Although it is rare, Richter’s transformation is important to identify in patients with a history of CLL because of its significant mortality if left untreated. In the setting of CLL, there are many ways in which patients can present if they are currently undergoing a Richter’s transformation. Case Description: Patients may present with symptoms common to CLL which include but …

The role of intellectual property in the pharmaceutical industry has been controversial for decades. On one hand, evidence suggests that patents and monopolies on drug sales for limited periods are necessary to fund costly R&D required to produce life-saving therapies. On the other, there is concern that patent rights have gone too far in favour of innovation, limiting access to lower-income populations who cannot afford exorbitant drug prices. This tension plays out at a grander scale in the international context, as drug prices can vary drastically between countries, as has happened in the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2017, the United States …

Water Banking Can Help Great Salt Lake, Sarah E. Null
Water Banking Can Help Great Salt Lake, Sarah E. Null
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
Utah’s Great Salt Lake is a treasured resource, yet dedicated flows have not been established to preserve the economic, ecological, and cultural values that the lake provides. Utah’s prior appropriation law allocates water rights based on time of first use, meaning agricultural water uses typically have senior rights. Utah’s Water Banking Act, which was adopted in 2020, presents an opportunity to reallocate some water to the environment within existing appropriative rights water law.
Under the act, water users can create local water banks to temporarily lease water. Leased water can be used for various purposes, including environmental or agricultural uses. …

The Miocene Climatic Optimum (MCO) provides important insights into how the climate system operates under elevated temperatures and atmospheric CO2 levels. Few western North Atlantic paleotemperature or paleoecological records exist from the MCO, despite their importance for understanding both regional and global climate dynamics. Here we present quantitative MCO paleoecological data from the western North Atlantic, specifically from the Baltimore Gas & Electric (BG&E) marine sediment core from southern Maryland, USA. We examine alkenones and planktic foraminifera and document the first sea surface temperature (SST) and productivity estimates for the MCO and the Middle Miocene Climate Transition (MMCT) from …

Coupled physical-biogeochemical models can fill the spatial and temporal gap in ocean carbon observations. Challenges of applying a coupled physical-biogeochemical model in the regional ocean include the reasonable prescription of carbon model boundary conditions, lack of in situ observations, and the oversimplification of certain biogeochemical processes. In this study, we applied a coupled physical-biogeochemical model (Regional Ocean Modelling System, ROMS) to the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) and achieved an unprecedented 20-year high-resolution (5 km, 1/22°) hindcast covering the period of 2000 to 2019. The biogeochemical model incorporated the dynamics of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) pools and the formation and dissolution …

The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is one of the most important drivers of interannual variations of marine ecosystems, especially monsoonal ecosystems. The channel effect in a strait amplifies the impact of monsoons and may be an ideal area to study ecosystem responses to ENSO events. Previous studies have shown that physical processes in the Taiwan Strait (TWS) vary during the different ENSO phases, but the biological responses are still unclear. In this study, we found clear differences in the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the TWS between different ENSO phases based on data from satellites and field cruises …

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is at present an incurable disease with a 5-year survival rate of 5.5%, despite improvements in treatment modalities such as surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy [e.g., temozolomide (TMZ)], and targeted therapy [e.g., the antiangiogenic agent bevacizumab (BEV)]. Diffusing alpha-emitters radiation therapy (DaRT) is a new modality that employs radium-224-loaded seeds that disperse alpha-emitting atoms inside the tumor. This treatment was shown to be effective in mice bearing human-derived GBM tumors. Here, the effect of DaRT in combination with standard-of-care therapies such as TMZ or BEV was investigated. In a viability assay, the combination of alpha radiation with TMZ …

Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) harbor rich assemblages of malaria parasites, including three species closely related to P. falciparum (sub-genus Laverania), the most malignant human malaria parasite. Here, we characterize the ecology and epidemiology of malaria infection in wild chimpanzee reservoirs. We used molecular assays to screen chimpanzee fecal samples, collected longitudinally and cross-sectionally from wild populations, for malaria parasite mitochondrial DNA. We found that chimpanzee malaria parasitism has an early age of onset and varies seasonally in prevalence. A subset of samples revealed Hepatocystis mitochondrial DNA, with phylogenetic analyses suggesting that Hepatocystis appears to cross species barriers more easily than Laverania. …

This paper investigates the optimal design of water distribution networks without storage capacity using mathematical optimization. Both micro-genetic algorithm and hydraulic simulation of water network are used to find the optimal diameters of pipes of the network. The single-objective function of the optimization problem is the total cost of the capital costs of the piping network and the pump, and the operating cost of the pump, under the fulfillment of minimum nodal pressure requirements. An optimization methodology, Genetic Algorithm for Pumps (GAPUMPS), is used to minimize energy consumption. The described procedure is demonstrated in four case studies for water distribution …

Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) has spilled over to many species, including humans, where the host range variant coronavirus OC43 is endemic. The balance of the opposing activities of the surface spike (S) and hemagglutinin-esterase (HE) glycoproteins controls BCoV avidity, which is critical for interspecies transmission and host adaptation. Here, 78 genomes were sequenced directly from clinical samples collected between 2013 and 2022 from cattle in 12 states, primarily in the Midwestern U.S. Relatively little genetic diversity was observed, with genomes having >98% nucleotide identity. Eleven isolates collected between 2020 and 2022 from four states (Nebraska, Colorado, California, and Wisconsin) contained a …

Morphogenetic events during the development of the fetal ovary are crucial to the establishment of female fertility. However, the effects of structural rearrangements of the ovary and surrounding reproductive tissues on ovary morphogenesis remain largely uncharacterized. Using tissue clearing and lightsheet microscopy, we found that ovary folding correlated with regionalization into cortex and medulla. Relocation of the oviduct to the ventral aspect of the ovary led to ovary encapsulation, and mutual attachment of the ovary and oviduct to the cranial suspensory ligament likely triggered ovary folding. During this process, the rete ovarii (RO) elaborated into a convoluted tubular structure extending …
