A Qualitative Study Of Senior Adults’ Perceptions Of Connectedness After Bibliotherapy, Rebecca E. Fisher
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of bibliotherapy on senior adults’ perceptions of social connectedness. The research question was “What are senior adults’ perceptions of connectedness after bibliotherapy?” To explore the research question, a virtual book study was conducted via Zoom. Seven retired adults took part in the virtual book study and were interviewed at the end of the study. A qualitative phenomenological approach was used to examine the lived experiences of connectedness among participants of the virtual book study; interview responses were distilled to core meanings. Analysis of the interview data resulted in three major …
The Relationship Between Introverted Student Behavior And Teacher Perception Of Student Engagement, Megan M. Dubee
The Relationship Between Introverted Student Behavior And Teacher Perception Of Student Engagement, Megan M. Dubee
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
The purpose of this quantitative survey study was to investigate if a relationship exists between introverted student behavior and teacher perception of student engagement. The purposive sample was composed of high school teachers in the United States. Using the Engagement Rating Scale, teachers scored student engagement across four domains when considering two descriptions of students. One student was described using characteristics of an introvert; teachers then completed an identical version of the scale for a second student who was described using characteristics of an extravert. Independent samples t-tests were used to analysis differences in scores by personality type and revealed …

Active particles convert external energy into motility, displaying a variety of dynamical features. Recent progress in the field has marked a shift in focus from understanding the origin and sources of active motion to controlling the dynamics and trajectory of individual microswimmers. This review explores the advancements made in a two-fold perspective—the role of particle design and that of external factors. Our main goal is to highlight the guiding principles, which determine active particle trajectory. These include, on the one hand, the role of the morphology of active particles and their assemblies in driving translation, rotation, and corresponding coupling between …

The Rise Of Machines: Patenting Inventions Generated By Artificial Intelligence In Canada, Morris Odeh
The Rise Of Machines: Patenting Inventions Generated By Artificial Intelligence In Canada, Morris Odeh
LLM Theses
“The rise of machines is here,” but they did not come as “rogue robots” to terminate humankind as some fictional writers predicted. Rather, they have come as inventors of human-like creativity. Therefore, this thesis examines the question of the patentability of inventions generated by artificial intelligence (AI) machines within the context of the Canadian patent system. Applying the modern principle of statutory interpretation, utilitarianism, and economic theoretical framework, this research determines whether AI-generated inventions can constitute patentable subject matter, AI systems can be inventors, and AI technology can own and exercise patent rights under the Canadian Patent Act. The thesis …

The carbon dioxide (CO2) injection in oil reservoirs is a promising enhanced oil recovery method to reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere. The CO2 injection simulation and optimization require a large computation time, especially in real large-scale oil reservoirs. This paper integrates experimental design and machine learning to construct a reduced-physics surrogate model alternative to the complex reservoir simulator. This surrogate model was used to evaluate and optimize the CO2-assisted gravity drainage (CO2-GAGD) process, applied to a clastic reservoir in the Rumaila oil field. In the GAGD process optimization, five operational decision parameters controlling the production and injection activities were …

Pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML) remains a fatal disease for at least 30% of patients, stressing the need for improved therapies and better risk stratification. As proteins are the unifying feature of (epi)genetic and environmental alterations, and are often targeted by novel chemotherapeutic agents, we studied the proteomic landscape of pediatric AML. Protein expression and activation levels were measured in 500 bulk leukemic patients' samples and 30 control CD34+ cell samples, using reverse phase protein arrays with 296 strictly validated antibodies. The multistep MetaGalaxy analysis methodology was applied and identified nine protein expression signatures (PrSIG), based on strong recurrent protein …
Citizen Science As Experiential Education In The Modern Classroom, Peter Swan
Citizen Science As Experiential Education In The Modern Classroom, Peter Swan
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Secondary education has grown increasingly dependent on delivering instruction and materials via mobile devices and computers in the 21st century. Research has long shown the effectiveness of “student-centered”, experiential and “place based” learning in the classroom. Citizen science initiatives have been demonstrated to be meaningful ways to teach the nature - and practice - of scientific inquiry. This paper explores the current trends in secondary science education in light of recent societal transformations and investigates the body of literature regarding environmental, outdoor and experiential education. The project then proposes a solution to integrate experiential, citizen science into a modern, digital …

This project connects the topics and goals of dual language immersion education to a website that can be used as a source of practice for students that are no longer directly in an immersion program by investigating the question, “What supports can teachers put in place that students can use when they are not directly in a dual language immersion program?” The research intends to illustrate the importance of continued practice and …
A Podcast And Website For Informal Educators And How It Can Disseminate Best Teaching Practices, Graham Charles
A Podcast And Website For Informal Educators And How It Can Disseminate Best Teaching Practices, Graham Charles
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Informal educators face barriers in delivering high-quality educational experiences. As they are not formally connected with teacher training programs, they frequently receive more content-area knowledge than pedagogical instruction. Thus, informal educators are challenged to discover and master best practices in their field on their own. Economic and learning theorists indicate that professionals share best practices through various socially mediated structures, such as peer learning, culminating in a spontaneous intragroup support structure which Wegner termed a community of practice. Many informal educators, however, cannot participate in such communities because they are physically located in different sites from colleagues performing similar work. …

The Impact Of Nature Deficit On Creating Learning Spaces For Children, Kirsten Bergren
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Nature deficit disorder is a problem because it causes a disconnect between people and the environment. Adults have their own experiences with nature deficit disorder and that is impacting their ability to design nature rich environments for children. Recognizing their own experiences can help them to create and enrich the learning environment of their students. This project aims to decrease nature deficit disorder and stress and increase overall health and wellness.

Reversible Dioxygen Binding To Co(Ii) Complexes With Noninnocent Ligands, Praveen Kumar, Laxmi Devkota, Maximilian C. Casey, Anne A. Fischer, Sergey V. Lindeman, Adam T. Fiedler
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
A series of mononuclear Co(II) complexes with noninnocent (redox-active) ligands are prepared that exhibit metal–ligand cooperativity during the reversible binding of O2. The complexes have the general formula, [CoII(LS,N)(TpR2)] (R = Me, Ph), where LS,N is a bidentate o-aminothiophenolate and TpR2 is a hydrotris(pyrazol-1-yl)borate scorpionate with R-substituents at the 3- and 5-positions. Exposure to O2 at room temperature results in one-electron oxidation and deprotonation of LS,N. The oxidized derivatives possess substantial “singlet diradical” character arising from antiferromagnetic coupling between an iminothiosemiquinonate (ITSQ•–) …

Abstract
Volatile compounds in fruits are responsible for their aroma. Among fruits, berries contain many volatile compounds, mainly esters, alcohols, terpenoids, aldehydes, ketones, and lactones. Studies for volatile compounds in berries have increased extensively as the consumption of berry products rapidly increased. In this paper, we reviewed biosynthesis and profiles of volatiles in some berries (strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, blackberry, and cranberry) and their bioavailability and health benefits, including anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-obesity, and anti-diabetic effects in vitro and in vivo. Each berry had different major volatiles, but monoterpene had an important role in all berries as aroma-active components. Volatile compounds were …Ultraviolet Light Exposure Decreases Thyroid Cancer Risk: A National Perspective, Tessa R. Lavorgna, Mohammad Hussein, Peter P. Issa, Eman Toraih, Emad Kandil
