Key Issues Generated From The Xi International Rangeland Congress 2021: Summary And Way Forward, D. L. Coppock, A. J. Ash, B. Irving
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The important issues, knowledge gaps, and evolving research approaches for the global rangelands are summarised in this review of submissions to the Joint XXIV International Grasslands and XI International Rangelands Congress (IGC/IRC). In the big picture, it is concluded that stand-alone studies of livestock production are becoming rare compared to that of the past International Rangelands Congresses (IRC). Rather, added effort is now being directed at understanding the fuller context of social-ecological systems (SESs) on rangelands in a quest to improve the prospects for sustainable resource management as well as the enhancement of human welfare. Although climate change is upon …

Joint International Grassland And International Rangeland Congress Kenya 2021: Grasslands Summary, James L. Klotz, J. H. Bouton
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
This summary used as its main sources the plenary and keynote papers and talks in Sub-theme 2: Forage Production and Utilization and Sub-theme 3: Livestock Production Systems as well as a sampling of oral talks presented at the XXIV International Grassland Congress (IGC). This IGC was held virtually and jointly with the International Rangeland Congress and hosted in Nairobi, Kenya during 23-29 October 2021. The XXIV IGC was also the first to be held on the African continent in Congress' 94-year history. The summary is further focused on that information presented under the concept "cultivated grasslands" (e.g., a small number …

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
The critical lack of racially and ethnically diverse healthcare professionals in the field of Communication Sciences & Disorders (CSD) in contrast to the increasing diversity of the U.S. population may contribute to healthcare disparities and negatively impact healthcare outcomes. It is therefore imperative for transformational programs and practices to be enacted to substantially increase the number of CSD professionals representing Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). As training institutions that graduate and contribute to the certification of CSD professionals, universities are fundamental for contributing to this change. Numerous barriers have been identified that limit the number of underrepresented minority …

Hadhramout University Journal of Natural & Applied Sciences
The continuous increase in the resistance of pathogenic Staphylococcus aureus isolated from non-hospital infected wounds to the novel chemical classes of antibiotics is of great public health importance. This problem prompted the researchers to study the antibiotic susceptibility of such strains. Twenty wound pus samples were collected and selected randomly from 20 non-hospital wound infected patients of different ages who attended different medical laboratories in Ghail-Bawazeer, Yemen, from October to December 2020, and 24 bacterial isolates were analyzed using morphological, cultural, and biochemical characterization for the isolation and identification of S. aureus. Based on the morphological and cultural characteristics, …

Stravinsky's Symphony Of Psalms Compared With Burton's Psalms Symphony, Roberto L. Burton
Stravinsky's Symphony Of Psalms Compared With Burton's Psalms Symphony, Roberto L. Burton
Masters Theses
"Stravinsky's own account of the composition of this great work follows and needs no addenda. But since composers don't always point out their greatest masterstrokes, here are a few additional comments. Listen closely to the first chord it recurs several times during the opening minutes of the first movement for although it is a simple e minor triad, in Stravinsky's hands even a conventional chord becomes distinctive. In assigning the triad's notes to the instruments of the orchestra, Stravinsky hands out twice as many G’s (minor triads) as the root of E or the fifth of B, contrary to what …

Tunable Action Potential Repolarization Governed By Kv3.4 Channels In Dorsal Root Ganglion Neurons., Tyler D. Alexander, Tanziyah Muqeem, Lianteng Zhi, Stephen R. Tymanskyj, Manuel Covarrubias
Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers
The Kv3.4 channel regulates action potential (AP) repolarization in nociceptors and excitatory synaptic transmission in the spinal cord. We hypothesize that this is a tunable role governed by protein kinase-C-dependent phosphorylation of the Kv3.4 cytoplasmic N-terminal inactivation domain (NTID) at four nonequivalent sites. However, there is a paucity of causation evidence linking the phosphorylation status of Kv3.4 to the properties of the AP. To establish this link, we used adeno-associated viral vectors to specifically manipulate the expression and the effective phosphorylation status of Kv3.4 in cultured dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons from mixed-sex rat embryos at embryonic day 18. These …

Background: Respondent Driven Sampling (RDS) is an effective sampling strategy to recruit hard-to-reach populations but the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the use of this strategy in the collection of data involving human subjects, particularly among marginalized and vulnerable populations, is not known. Based on an ongoing study using RDS to recruit and study the interactions between HIV infection, injection drug use, and the microbiome in Puerto Rico, this paper explores the eectiveness of RDS during the pandemic and provided potential strategies that could improve recruitment and data collection.
Results: RDS was employed to evaluate its effectiveness …

Developing Biblical, Community-Based Resources For Military Wives Entering The Empty Nest And Midlife Transition Period, Cynthia Louise Stumme
Developing Biblical, Community-Based Resources For Military Wives Entering The Empty Nest And Midlife Transition Period, Cynthia Louise Stumme
Masters Theses
Military wives approaching the onset of middle age and the empty nest should have access to resources that help them navigate the challenges of midlife within the context of the military lifestyle. The US military provides resources supporting successful family relationships for almost every other demographic except for military wives at the midlife and empty nest stage of life. While midlife is understudied as a life stage, the existing research does identify specific objectives for personal development and growth during middle age which lead to thriving in that stage and in old age. Using these objectives as a guide, this …

Effects Of Nitrogen Fertilizer On The Sugar And Ethanol Production Of C. Sativa, Aidan Power, Christian Mugisha, Boanerges Bamaca, Asmita Mahara, Mark Wilkins Ph.D
Annual Student Research Poster Session
With the decrease of fossil fuel-supply and increase of greenhouse gasses, biofuels are needed now more than ever. This includes bioethanol, an alternative fuel that can be made from waste materials, including C. Sativa (commonly known as hemp). The common belief in biological engineering is that the sugars from hemp can attract fermenting organisms to produce the needed ethanol. The question remains, however, of how external factors play into the ethanol production from hemp, such as fertilizer. I tested samples from three plots with different amounts of nitrogen fertilizer to see if the amount of sugar and ethanol varies or …

Level And Pattern Of Overstory Retention Shape The Abundance And Long-Term Dynamics Of Natural And Created Snags, Charles B. Halpern, Allison K. Rossman, Joan C. Hagar
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Standing dead trees, or snags, serve myriad functions in natural forests, but are often scarce in forests managed for timber production. Variable retention (VR), the retention of live and dead trees through harvest, has been adopted globally as a less intensive form of regeneration harvest. In this study, we explore how two key elements of VR systems — level (amount) and spatial pattern of live-tree retention — affect the carryover and post-harvest dynamics of natural and artificially created snags. We present nearly two decades of data from the DEMO Study, a regional-scale experiment in VR harvests of Douglas-fir-dominated forests in …
Exploring The Correlation Between Family And The Church: Integrating The Family Into A New Church By Implementing Group Psychoeducation Counseling, Korey A. Tucker
Exploring The Correlation Between Family And The Church: Integrating The Family Into A New Church By Implementing Group Psychoeducation Counseling, Korey A. Tucker
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This action research project addressed the problem of families not fully integrating into a new church community. The research used the implementation of group psychoeducation counseling to help integrate families into a new church system. Exploring the correlation between the family and church revealed that healthy families help to create a healthy church. The rationale for implementing group psychoeducation counseling is that other forms of engaging the family could not address all the needs and challenges families experience when attempting to assimilate fully into a new church system. The research method utilized was a mixed-method approach, using pre- and post-assessment …
Frederick Chopin's Life And Works And It's Influence On Applied Piano Teaching, Pablo A. Cintron
Frederick Chopin's Life And Works And It's Influence On Applied Piano Teaching, Pablo A. Cintron
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
While many aspects of Frederic Chopin piano technique have been investigated, pedagogical studies regarding his unfinished piano method are certainly lacking. This research focuses on providing first-hand information that will expand the pedagogical philosophy and widen the historical perspective of applied piano students in general. This research project will explore some of practice and historical strategies presented by the nineteenth and twentieth-century pianists in applied lessons to determine how students practice in successive lessons. Frederick Chopin’s innovations on piano technique are extraordinary and influenced succeeding generations of pianists and piano composers. Furthermore, the life and the works of Frederick Chopin …
Learning The Host Nation Language While Living Abroad As A Military Adolescent, A Transcendental Phenomenology, Simone Sweatman
Learning The Host Nation Language While Living Abroad As A Military Adolescent, A Transcendental Phenomenology, Simone Sweatman
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
High mobility in students has been shown to have a negative effect on academic achievement. Military children relocate six to nine times before graduating high school, with at least one of these moves being overseas. This transcendental phenomenology described the lived experience of military-affiliated students who learned the language of their host culture while living overseas. The theory guiding this study was Ryan and Deci's self-determination theory. This study focused on the importance of self-determination for academic attainment, which is thought to be achieved through a feeling of competence, autonomy, and relatedness. Through criterion sampling, 11 participants, ages18 to 23, …
The Moderating Role Of Positive Religious Coping And Workplace Spirituality In The Relationship Between Level Of Traditional And Covid-19 Related Stressors Encountered And Mental Health In Hospitality Workers, Danielle Grace Defacci
The Moderating Role Of Positive Religious Coping And Workplace Spirituality In The Relationship Between Level Of Traditional And Covid-19 Related Stressors Encountered And Mental Health In Hospitality Workers, Danielle Grace Defacci
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Higher levels of workplace and COVID-related stressors appear clearly linked to poorer mental health outcomes, and evidence is emerging that suggests positive religious coping (PRC) and workplace spirituality (WS) are both related to better mental health outcomes. It could be that PRC and WS buffer the impact of high stress levels on mental health. However, only one study exists that has explored the moderating effect of PRC in the stress-mental health relationship, and no studies exist exploring the moderating effect of WS in the stress-mental health relationship. Therefore, this study looked at the moderating role of PRC and WS in …

In Favor Of Bringing Game Theory Into Urban Studies And Planning Curriculum: Reintroducing An Underused Method For The Next Generation Of Urban Scholars, Brian Mcdonald Gardner
Dissertations and Theses
By looking at some historical examples of Urban Studies literature and theory (and a detailed dive into Neil Smith's "Toward a theory of gentrification…") this thesis makes the case that Game Theory has valid insights to add to the foundation of Urban Studies and Planning and should be included in Masters and Doctorate level curriculums. As a discipline Game Theory has revolutionized multiple other fields, and can be used both mathematically and/or non-mathematically. It is postulated below that the inclusion of Game Theory would help scholars and practitioners arrive at better outcomes. This case is made by reviewing various areas …

Identifying Androgens As A Protective Agent In The Allergic Immune Response To Peanut, Mckenna Vininski
Identifying Androgens As A Protective Agent In The Allergic Immune Response To Peanut, Mckenna Vininski
Biology Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
Peanut (PN) allergy is a major public health concern. Prevalence of PN allergy has been on the rise for decades due to poor prevention information and a lack of knowledge about the allergic mechanism. Recent research has brought clarity about how individuals become sensitized with routes known through the skin, as well as the airway. Factors influence the allergic immune response, however, based on a known sex difference in allergic asthma and food allergy demographics showing a sex difference, this thesis work hypothesized that a sex difference would exist in PN allergy. This study utilized a 4-week inhalation mouse model …

IMPORTANCE: The potential relationship between obesity and colorectal cancer (CRC) outcome is poorly understood in patients with late-stage disease. Increased body mass index may negate aspirin use for cancer prevention, but its role as a factor on the effectiveness of postdiagnosis aspirin use is unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate how prediagnosis obesity and postdiagnosis aspirin use may be associated with overall survival in patients with late-stage colorectal cancer.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used self-reported data from patients with metastatic or treatment-refractory disease who consented to a clinical protocol at MD Anderson Cancer Center, a large US cancer treatment …
Polyamine Enzymes As Potential Targets For Cancer Therapeutics To Mitigate Diabetic Triple Negative Breast Cancer Advancement, Hadassha Tofilau
Polyamine Enzymes As Potential Targets For Cancer Therapeutics To Mitigate Diabetic Triple Negative Breast Cancer Advancement, Hadassha Tofilau
Biology Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
Breast cancer (BC) is the second leading cause of death in women. Co-existence of diabetes and BC can be lethal, leading to higher mortality than BC alone. TNBC is highly refractive, heterogenous, and resistant to most chemotherapies. Polyamines play a role in cell growth and are elevated in cancer, though their role in diabetic TNBC has not been explored. We hypothesized that high glucose/diabetic conditions increase TNBC cell proliferation through modification of enzymes in the polyamine pathway and that miR-133a would decrease TNBC cell proliferation. For this study, MDA-MB-231 and MCF-10A cell lines were both treated with normal (5mM) and …

Culture-Building Through Online Communication: A Case Study On The Rabbit Room Nonprofit Organization, Kate Elizabeth Mead
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Communication patterns and techniques have been changed by the continuous evolution of online technology. Research has found that online communities may unify through a myriad of communication techniques. To date, however, there is limited research over the online communication patterns of faith-based organizations, particularly faith-based nonprofits that operate separately from traditional religious bodies. The purpose of this case study was to develop a deeper understanding of how communication presents itself online and thus develops culture within a Christian nonprofit organization. This qualitative case study analyzed the Rabbit Room organization and its online artifacts from November 1, 2021 through April 30, …
