Effect Of Cell Cycle On Cell Surface Expression Of Voltage-Gated Sodium Channels And Na+,K+-Atpase, Samantha Edenfield, Abigail M. Sims, Constance Porretta, Harry J. Gould, Dennis Paul
School of Graduate Studies Faculty Publications
Voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs) are the target for many therapies. Variation in membrane potential occurs throughout the cell cycle, yet little attention has been devoted to the role of VGSCs and Na+,K+-ATPases. We hypothesized that in addition to doubling DNA and cell membrane in anticipation of cell division, there should be a doubling of VGSCs and Na+,K+-ATPase compared to non-dividing cells. We tested this hypothesis in eight immortalized cell lines by correlating immunocytofluorescent labeling of VGSCs or Na+,K+-ATPase with propidium iodide or DAPI fluorescence using flow cytometry and imaging. Cell surface expression of VGSCs during phases S through M was …

Salinity has a significant negative impact on production of rice. To cope with the increased soil salinity due to climate change, we need to develop salt tolerant rice varieties that can maintain their high yield. Rice landraces indigenous to coastal Bangladesh can be a great resource to study the genetic basis of salt adaptation. In this study, we implemented a QTL analysis framework with a reciprocal mapping population developed from a salt tolerant landrace Horkuch and a high yielding rice variety IR29. Our aim was to detect genetic loci that contributes to the salt adaptive responses of the two …
Systemic Risk Of Contract, Tal Kastner
Systemic Risk Of Contract, Tal Kastner
BYU Law Review
Complexity and uncertainty define our world, now more than ever. Scholars and practitioners have celebrated modular contract design as an especially effective tool to manage these challenges. Modularity divides complex structures into relatively discrete, independent components with simple connections. The benefits of this fundamental drafting approach are intuitive. Lawyers divide contracts into sections and provisions to make them easier to understand and reduce uncertainty. Dealmakers constructing complex transactions use portable agreements as building blocks to reduce drafting costs and enable innovation. Little attention, however, has been paid to the risks introduced by modularity in contracts. This Article demonstrates how this …

Weeds have a significant impact on agricultural systems. They not only cause a loss in crop yield by competing with them for resources, but they can also serve hosts for several pests and parasties such as plant parasitic nematodes casusing additional crop loss. The aim of this study was to analyze plant-nematode feedback in two major weeds, Amaranthus palmeri S Watson and Parthenium hysterophorus L. First, a field survey was conducted to determine the rhizosphere nematode trophic groups associated with these two plants in the summer of 2020 and 2021. Then a 6-week greenhouse study was conducted where the two …

Beliefs, Identity, And An African American Cemetery: An Exploratory Study Of Difficult History Curricular Decision- Making, Shannon Peck-Bartle
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this qualitative exploratory study, I examine the influence of administrative curricular decision-makers’ beliefs and values towards race and ethnicity, heritage, and place on curricular aims for the inclusion of local difficult history associated with the erasure of a racialized cultural landscape, The Ridgewood Cemetery. I additionally examine the influence of contemporary issues on beliefs and values as administrative curricular decision-makers navigate ways to incorporate local cemetery history into secondary social studies curriculum. Through semi-structured interviews, document analysis, and research’s reflective journaling I shed light on ways beliefs, values, and contemporary issues influenced administrative curricular decision-making for local difficult history. …
Does Integrated Information Theory Make Testable Predictions About The Role Of Silent Neurons In Consciousness?, Gary Bartlett
Does Integrated Information Theory Make Testable Predictions About The Role Of Silent Neurons In Consciousness?, Gary Bartlett
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Arts and Humanities
Tononi et al. claim that their integrated information theory of consciousness makes testable predictions. This article discusses two of the more startling predictions, which follow from the theory’s claim that conscious experiences are generated by inactive as well as active neurons. The first prediction is that a subject’s conscious experience at a time can be affected by the disabling of neurons that were already inactive at that time. The second is that even if a subject’s entire brain is “silent,” meaning that all of its neurons are inactive (but not disabled), the subject can still have a conscious experience. …

Most participants (n = 1072, 20.0 ± 1.5 years) identified as heterosexual …
Black Stem Mentors Matter: A Qualitative Case Study Examining The Contextual Factors Of Mentoring Relationships In Stem At A Private Hbcu That Contribute To African American Student Persistence Within Stem Majors, Brittany Chambers
Georgia Educational Research Association Conference
As science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields continue to drive the nation forward, there remains a need for more diversified STEM minds. While there have been many interventions geared toward supporting minorities at predominately white institutions (PWIs), seldom do researchers investigate where African American STEM students experience the most success, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Therefore, this qualitative case study aimed to examine the contextual factors that make up mentoring relationships in STEM at a HBCU that contribute to African American student persistence in STEM. An exploratory, qualitative approach was utilized to focus on STEM students at a …
Racecraft And Identity In The Emergence Of Islam As A Race, Cyra Akila Choudhury
Racecraft And Identity In The Emergence Of Islam As A Race, Cyra Akila Choudhury
University of Cincinnati Law Review
Can a religion, over time and through its social and legal resignification, come to be a race? Drawing on Critical Race Theory (“CRT”), Critical Discourse Theory, the work of Karen E. and Barbara J. Fields and Cedric Robinson, this article argues that Islam has emerged as a race and Muslims as a racial group. To support the claim, Part I examines the theoretical basis for the argument. Applying the concept of “racecraft,” the article theorizes that racism produces both the racial group and race. As many have already argued, race is not based in biology; it is not a fact …

Three-Dimensional Motion Analysis For Occupational Therapy Upper Extremity Assessment And Rehabilitation: A Scoping Review, Stephen W. Hill, Samantha Mong, Quyen Vo
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Background: Three-dimensional (3D) human motion analysis provides objective, quantitative, and reliable kinematic data that are valuable in rehabilitation. Clinicians, including occupational therapists and other specialists, can apply this technology to quantify patients’ upper extremity (UE) motion during functional tasks. A better comprehension of altered body mechanics serves to guide clinical reasoning, develop evidence-based interventions, and monitor patients’ progress through follow-up. However, the scientific literature has yet to emphasize the practicality of using 3D motion analysis as a clinical measurement tool.
Method: This scoping review appraised 20 articles that used 3D motion analysis to quantify UE movements for individuals …

Evaluating Dimensionality Reduction For Genomic Prediction, Vamsi Manthena, Diego Jarquín, Rajeev K. Varshney, Manish Roorkiwal, Girish Prasad Dixit, Chellapilla Bharadwaj, Reka Howard
Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications
The development of genomic selection (GS) methods has allowed plant breeding programs to select favorable lines using genomic data before performing field trials. Improvements in genotyping technology have yielded high-dimensional genomic marker data which can be difficult to incorporate into statistical models. In this paper, we investigated the utility of applying dimensionality reduction (DR) methods as a pre-processing step for GS methods. We compared five DR methods and studied the trend in the prediction accuracies of each method as a function of the number of features retained. The effect of DR methods was studied using three models that involved the …

Coastal Wetland Area Change For Two Freshwater Diversions In The Mississippi River Delta, John R. White, Brady Couvillion, John W. Day
Coastal Wetland Area Change For Two Freshwater Diversions In The Mississippi River Delta, John R. White, Brady Couvillion, John W. Day
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Coastal systems around the globe are being re-integrated with adjacent river systems to restore the natural hydrologic connection to riparian wetlands. The Mississippi River sediment diversions or river reconnections are one such tool to combat high rates of wetland loss in coastal Louisiana, USA by providing freshwater, sediment, and nutrients. There has been some disagreement in the published literature whether re-establishing river reconnection is slowing or contributing to coastal wetland loss. This issue is due to the difficulties in the application of remote sensing in low-relief environments where water level changes could indicate either land loss or simply temporary submergence. …

Learning Styles Reconsidered, Peter Tagtmeyer
Learning Styles Reconsidered, Peter Tagtmeyer
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
Study of individual differences in learning processes has a long history across several lines of psychology inquiry. Learning style theory (LST) is arguably a broadly recognized approach to education, embraced by educators theoretically and practically. Accommodation of individual learning styles with differential instruction is supported and endorsed globally, and well-funded. Yet empirical evidence in the literature that examines augmented learning achieved via learning styles accommodation in pedagogical practices is not compelling. Learning style theories are regularly researched in psychological and educational literature, and questions about the validity of findings persist. Currently LST research gives cause for many to regard learning …

Acmaeodera Moesta Dugès, 1891 (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), A Poorly Known Species From Mexico, Richard L. Westcott, Jesus Romero-Napoles
Insecta Mundi
Two new state records are reported for the Mexican Acmaeodera moesta Dugès (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), a lectotype is designated for it, and clarifying discussion is provided.
According to Westcott (2020) there are 152 described valid species of Acmaeodera Eschscholtz in Mexico. Acmaeodera moesta Dugès (Fig. 1–3) was described from the state of Guanajuato, and it has not since been mentioned in the literature except for listings in catalogs and checklists. Herein we record it from the states of México (MEX) and San Luis Potosí (SLP), designate a lectotype, and provide a detailed discussion.

Genomics Reveals A New Genus And Species From A Single Female Specimen (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae: Hesperiinae: Hesperiini: Moncina), Ernst Brockmann, Jing Zhang, Qian Cong, Nick V. Grishin
Insecta Mundi
New taxa in Hesperiidae (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) are traditionally proposed after inspection of male genitalia, which largely form the basis for Hesperiidae taxonomy. However, with genomic DNA sequencing, even a single female specimen can be placed in a phylogenetic context of existing classification and taxonomically assigned with confidence. Genomic sequencing of an unusually patterned Hesperiidae female from San Martin, Peru, characterized by pearly spots outlining an inverted heart pattern on the rust-colored ventral hindwing, reveals that it represents an undescribed genus and species named here as Gemmia buechei Brockmann and Grishin, new genus and new species.

A Nanofiber-Embedded Microfluidic Platform For Studying Neurobiology, Donghee Lee, Navatha Shree Sharma, S. M. Shatil Shahriar, Kai Yang, Zheng Yan, Jingwei Xie
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Due to their biomimetic properties, electrospun nanofibers have been widely used in neurobiology studies. However, mechanistic understanding of cell-nanofiber interactions is challenging based on the current in vitro culture systems due to the lack of control of spatiotemporal patterning of cells and difficulty in monitoring single cell behavior. To overcome these issues, we apply microfluidic technology in combination with electrospun nanofibers for in vitro studies of interactions between neurons and nanofiber materials. We demonstrate a unique nanofiber embedded microfluidic device which contains patterned aligned or random electrospun nanofibers as a new culture system. With this device, we test how different …

Population Trajectory And Stressors Of Acropora Palmata Sites In The Florida Keys, Karen L. Neely, Kevin A. Macaulay, Kate S. Lunz
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
The decline of elkhorn coral, Acropora palmata, has been ongoing for decades, but the causes of decline and the resulting population status continue to be topics of study. Past efforts to categorize stressors have ranged from spatially and/or temporally focused efforts that detect local stressors but may miss broader patterns to meta-analyses that identify large-scale trends but may not account for finer-scale variability. We here conduct an analysis of sites surveyed across five years (2010-2015) and much of the Florida Reef Tract in order to look at large-scale patterns while also accounting for site, habitat, seasonal, and annual variability. …

Enriching University Of Rochester's Stem Collections With Resources About And By Bipoc Scientists, Susan K. Cardinal
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
You might think that the collections of a major library would be unaffected by cultural prejudices. However, even the University of Rochester's collections are sadly lacking in works by and about scientists of color. Our poster describes our work to rectify this situation in order to inspire current and future BIPOC students to go into STEM fields. One scientist who we feature is Joy Buolamwini, who recently earned her PhD from MIT’s Media Lab. She noticed that analyses of photographs are often biased, so she formed the Algorithmic Justice League to study and correct that problem. Our collections are more …

Emotional Perspectives On Existential Threat: Evaluating The Rationality Of Climate Anxiety, Rachael Lange
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
This thesis seeks to answer the following question: Is climate anxiety a rational emotion? In order to arrive at an answer, several queries embedded in the main question must be addressed. This paper will outline a theory of emotion in order to define anxiety, assess climate change as a specific emotional object, and compare the rationality of anxiety using two evaluative standards. Climate anxiety is an emerging emotional phenomenon experienced in response to the perceived detrimental effects of a warming climate. Due to the novel identification of this contemporary emotional phenomenon with the established emotion of anxiety, there has thus …
