Coating nanoparticles with stealth epilayers increases circulation time by evading opsonization, macrophage phagocytosis, and reticuloendothelial sequestration. However, this also reduces internalization by cancer cells upon reaching the tumor. We designed gold nanorods (GNRs) with an epilayer that retains stealth properties in circulation but transforms spontaneously in the acidotic tumor microenvironment to a cell-penetrating particle. We used a customized stoichiometric ratio of l-glutamic acid and l-lysine within an amphiphilic polymer of poly(l-glutamic acid-co-l-lysine), or P(Glu-co-Lys), to effect this transformation in acidotic environments. P(Glu-co-Lys)-GNRs were internalized by cancer cells to facilitate potent in vitro radiosensitization. When administered intravenously in mice, they accumulate …

INTRODUCTION Tobacco smokers are at high risk of developing severe COVID-19. Lockdown was a chosen strategy to deal with the spread of infectious diseases; nonetheless, it influenced people's eating and smoking behaviors. The main objective of this study is to determine the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on smoking (waterpipe and cigarette) behavior and its associations with sociodemographic characteristics and body mass index. METHODS The data were derived from a large-scale retrospective cross-sectional study using a validated online international survey from 38 countries (n=37207) conducted between 17 April and 25 June 2020. The Eastern Mediterranean Region (WHO-EMR countries) data related …

Helicobacter pylori lives in the human stomach and has a population structure resembling that of its host. However, H. pylori from Europe and the Middle East trace substantially more ancestry from modern African populations than the humans that carry them. Here, we use a collection of Afro-Eurasian H. pylori genomes to show that this African ancestry is due to at least three distinct admixture events. H. pylori from East Asia, which have undergone little admixture, have accumulated many more non-synonymous mutations than African strains. European and Middle Eastern bacteria have elevated African ancestry at the sites of these mutations, implying …
Energy Management In Migrating Hummingbirds, Shayne Halter
Energy Management In Migrating Hummingbirds, Shayne Halter
Shared Knowledge Conference
Hummingbirds are the smallest of migratory birds. Their use of hovering flight to feed on nectar results in prodigious rates of energy consumption. At night, when birds are unable to feed, body fat must be used to stay warm. These characteristics make migratory flights to and from northern breeding areas very expensive. To offset these costs, hummingbirds alternate long flights with stopover periods of refueling along the way. Body fat stores, which may account for as much as 40% of a bird's body weight, also provide a buffer if birds find themselves in a nectar "desert" when the need to …
Assessing The Effects Of Climate Change On Piñon Pine And Its Associated Fungi, Matthew Taylor
Assessing The Effects Of Climate Change On Piñon Pine And Its Associated Fungi, Matthew Taylor
Shared Knowledge Conference
Precipitation patterns are a well understood driver of biological processes across the globe, with the frequency and amount determining where, when, and how plants and other organisms grow and interact. Weather patterns, however, are becoming unpredictable, as climate change is driving an increase in extreme events, such as drought. The importance of rainfall is no more apparent than in global drylands. One critical and widespread ecosystem type, covering 18 million hectares of land throughout the Southwestern U.S., is piñon-juniper (P-J) woodlands. Pinus edulis (piñon pine) is a dominant tree species in P-J woodlands and is both ecologically and culturally important …

Going Back To Nature For Finding New Antibiotic To Fight Against The Mutated Bacteria (The Superbug), Md Rafiqul Islam Rupam
Shared Knowledge Conference
Living a healthy life is a well-desired thing for all human beings. But sometimes our health is affected by the pathogen specially by the bacteria and we get sick. In the event of sickness, we need medicine that can fight against pathogens and make our life back on the track that we always desire. Medicine, to be specific antibiotics has a great role in the treatment of diseases that are caused by bacteria. Right now, antibiotics are getting registrant due to the bacteria's own ability to mutate by itself. The antibiotic that is effective against the specific bacteria may not …

Rational Design Of Silica-Based Nanoparticles For Overcoming Barriers Of Sirna Delivery In Relapsed Prostate Cancer Applications, Angelea Maestas-Olguin
Shared Knowledge Conference
The use of exogenous siRNA technology to modulate aberrant protein expression resulting from genetic mutations is a promising therapeutic approach for treatment of diseases such as prostate cancer (PC). The promise of siRNA-based therapeutics is dependent on the development of platforms that effectively protect siRNA from nuclease degradation and deliver the siRNA to the cytosol of target cells. The establishment of nanoparticle-based siRNA delivery platforms have been investigated to mitigate the cost and safety issues associated with viral delivery platforms. In this work, we present the development and characterization of a lipid coated mesoporous silica nanoparticle (LC-MSN) to address the …
Rhizosphere Fungal Assemblages Differentiate By Host Ploidy Level In Mixed-Ploidy Larrea Tridentata Populations, Benjamin Gerstner
Rhizosphere Fungal Assemblages Differentiate By Host Ploidy Level In Mixed-Ploidy Larrea Tridentata Populations, Benjamin Gerstner
Shared Knowledge Conference
Polyploidy-whole genome duplication-is common in plants. Studies over the last several decades have documented numerous mixed-ploidy populations. Whether arising from secondary contact or via whole genome duplication events, the persistence of mixed populations depends on the ability of the minority cytotype to overcome the negative frequency dependent effects of outcrossing with other ploidies, known as Minority Cytotype Exclusion. One mechanism of overcoming Minority Cytotype Exclusion is microbially-mediated niche differentiation (MMND), wherein cytotypes occupy different niches via interactions with different sets of microbes. Inherently cryptic, MMND is underexplored in polyploid plant populations. Here, we search for evidence of MMND in creosotebush …
The Interplay Between Acute Stress And Antimicrobial Peptide Modulation In The Fish Skin, Yago Santos
The Interplay Between Acute Stress And Antimicrobial Peptide Modulation In The Fish Skin, Yago Santos
Shared Knowledge Conference
The fish skin is a crucial first line of defense against different external threats. Among these dangers, several sources of stress, such as overcrowding and transportation, are often associated to intensive aquaculture. Thus, fish requires efficient mechanisms to sense and respond to those danger signals. In fish, the skin produces a large amount of mucus, that covers and protects the whole body. Within the mucus layer, several molecules can directly interact and kill pathogens, one of them are beta-defensins. Beta-defensins are antimicrobial peptides present in almost all animals, including fish. As in humans, beta-defensins are highly expressed in the fish …

Examining The Use Of Naturally Occurring Free Radical Scavengers Against Uv Light Damage In Cancer Prevention, Tanner Justice
Examining The Use Of Naturally Occurring Free Radical Scavengers Against Uv Light Damage In Cancer Prevention, Tanner Justice
Honors Theses
A strong association has been found between mutated p53 tumor suppressor genes and cancers in humans. Cancers arise from a culmination of genetic and environmental factors, including exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun. Prolonged exposure to UV has proven negative effects on cell homeostasis. Much of the damage caused by UV light exposure is through generation of free radicals. Zeaxanthin and melatonin are known antioxidant/free radical scavengers which protect cells by neutralizing damage causing free radical molecules. This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of zeaxanthin and melatonin in preventing the negative effects of UV light on …
Resource Availability Affects Seasonal Trajectories Of Population-Level Learning, Matthew W. Austin, Aimee S. Dunlap
Resource Availability Affects Seasonal Trajectories Of Population-Level Learning, Matthew W. Austin, Aimee S. Dunlap
Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works
Environmental effects on learning are well known, such as cognition that is mediated by nutritional consumption. Less known is how seasonally variable environments affect phenological trajectories of learning. Here, we test the hypothesis that nutritional availability affects seasonal trajectories of population-level learning in species with developmentally plastic cognition. We test this in bumble bees (Apidae: Bombus), a clade of eusocial insects that produce individuals at different time points across their reproductive season and exhibit organ developmental plasticity in response to nutritional consumption. To accomplish this, we develop a theoretical model that simulates learning development across a reproductive season for …

Veteran–Novice Pairing For Tutors’ Professional Development, Xuan Jiang, Jennifer Peña, Feng Li
Veteran–Novice Pairing For Tutors’ Professional Development, Xuan Jiang, Jennifer Peña, Feng Li
The Writing Center Journal
This mixed methods study examines whether veteran–novice mentorship between tutors, as part of continuous in-service professional development, would have a positive effect on either party’s transferable skills (e.g., communication, collaboration, and professionalism). Quantitative findings from pre- and postsurveys about the veteran–novice mentorship suggest that tutors have significant gains in some transferable skills, such as oral/written communication skills, teamwork/collaboration skills, digital technology skills, and career management skills, after attending the continuous in-service professional development. Quantitative findings from the pre- and postsurveys further indicate that novice tutors improve more, compared to veteran tutors, in their self-perceived oral/written communication skill levels. Qualitative findings …

The Influence Of Audio And Video Quality On Perceptions Of The Psychotherapist, Olivia Glasgow
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The recent Coronavirus pandemic made remote means of conducting psychotherapy more common, and although there is a large amount of research on the mode of therapy, little research exists on the effects of video and audio quality on perceptions of the therapist. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the evaluation of a therapist changes when viewing different audiovisual qualities of recorded in-person therapy interactions. Participants were randomly assigned to view audio or video therapy interactions with differing levels of audiovisual quality. Analyses revealed a statistically significant difference in observer perceptions of interpersonal characteristics, such as empathy and …

Investigating The Rat Grimace Scale As A Potential Indicator Of Chronic Pain Following Forelimb Deafferentation, Nasreen Nemati
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Reorganization of the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) that follows deafferentation may play a role in phantom limb pain (PLP). An animal model of forelimb amputation and subsequent S1 reorganization, like the rat, could advance research in the underlying mechanisms of PLP. The rat grimace scale (RGS) is a method of behavioral analysis used to quantify the affective state. In this study, 8 amputee and 4 sham-operated rats were observed for a minimum of one week pre-surgery and up to 11 weeks post-surgery to score the facial behaviors using RGS. The change in overall average pre-surgery and post-surgery RGS score was …

Numerous safe and effective coronavirus disease 2019 vaccines have been developed worldwide that use various delivery technologies and engineering strategies. We show here that vaccines containing prefusion-stabilizing S mutations elicit antibody responses in humans with enhanced recognition of S and the S1 subunit relative to postfusion S as compared with vaccines lacking these mutations or natural infection. Prefusion S and S1 antibody binding titers positively and equivalently correlated with neutralizing activity, and depletion of S1-directed antibodies completely abrogated plasma neutralizing activity. We show that neutralizing activity is almost entirely directed to the S1 subunit and that variant cross-neutralization is mediated …
