Unlocking The Functional Potential Of Polyploid Yeasts, Simone Mozzachiodi, Kristoffer Krogerus, Brian Gibson, Alain Nicolas, Gianni Liti

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Breeding and domestication have generated widely exploited crops, animals and microbes. However, many Saccharomyces cerevisiae industrial strains have complex polyploid genomes and are sterile, preventing genetic improvement strategies based on breeding. Here, we present a strain improvement approach based on the budding yeasts’ property to promote genetic recombination when meiosis is interrupted and cells return-to-mitotic-growth (RTG). We demonstrate that two unrelated sterile industrial strains with complex triploid and tetraploid genomes are RTG-competent and develop a visual screening for easy and high-throughput identification of recombined RTG clones based on colony phenotypes. Sequencing of the evolved clones reveal unprecedented levels of RTG-induced …

Background: Trauma and chronic stress are believed to induce and exacerbate psychopathology by disrupting glutamate synaptic strength. However, in vivo in human methods to estimate synaptic strength are limited. In this study, we established a novel putative biomarker of glutamatergic synaptic strength, termed energy-per-cycle (EPC). Then, we used EPC to investigate the role of prefrontal neurotransmission in trauma-related psychopathology.

Methods: Healthy controls (n = 18) and patients with posttraumatic stress (PTSD; n = 16) completed 13C-acetate magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) scans to estimate prefrontal EPC, which is the ratio of neuronal energetic needs per glutamate neurotransmission cycle (VTCA/VCycle).

Results: Patients …

Biobanks are repositories of human biological samples and data. They are an important component of clinical research in many disease areas and often represent the first step toward innovative treatments. For biobanks to operate, researchers need human participants to give their samples and associated health data. In Ireland, research participants must provide their freely given informed consent for their samples and data to be taken and used for research purposes. Biobank staff are responsible for communicating the relevant information to participants prior to obtaining their consent, and this communication process is supported by the Participant Information Leaflets and Informed Consent …

Defending Human Difference By Raising The Bar, Joe Gough Jan 2022

Defending Human Difference By Raising The Bar, Joe Gough

Animal Sentience

Chapman & Huffman (C&H) offer a theory of why we humans want to believe that we are different: to justify our cruelty to animals. This commentary offers further supporting evidence of this and examines more closely what the claim that humans are ‘different’ amounts to. It also considers some methodological issues in animal psychology closely related to C&H ‘s theory. These problems result from a common strategy for defending hypotheses about human difference.

Choosing Death, Shaping Death: Assumptions About Disabilities, Race, And Death, Janet L. Dolgin

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This article considers two legal cases and the stories that developed around them. Both the cases and their stories involved issues of significance to the larger society - death and bias. Each concern has occasioned confusion and debate in its own right. When these issues are combined, confusion and debate are intensified. This Article examines the complicated interplay between bias and decisions about death and dying in the U.S. health care system. Further, it reviews intersecting claims about the importance, respectively, of autonomy and community in resolving disputes about the topics of death and dying.

The Elephant In The Room In Clinical Scholarship: Ethical Guardrails And Case Histories, Theo Liebmann, Stefan H. Krieger

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Lawyers know how to tell a good story and are expected, encouraged, and even ethically required to use that skill on behalf of their clients. More and more, lawyers and legal academics are now using their clients' stories to advance goals that go far beyond achieving a client's objectives: exposing inequities with regard to access to justice; educating the public about the functioning and limitations of the legal system; raising the quality of lawyering; and improving our system of legal education. Unfortunately, the increase in the use of case histories to achieve such laudable goals has not been paired with …

The Thin Blue Line Between Virtue And Vice: Confronting The Moral Harms Of Policing, G. Alex Sinha Jan 2022

The Thin Blue Line Between Virtue And Vice: Confronting The Moral Harms Of Policing, G. Alex Sinha

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Scholarship on policing has exploded in recent years as bystanders increasingly record and circulate videos of police brutality, much of it directed at civilians of color. These incidents have invited significant attention on the culture of police departments and police unions, generating widespread calls for the reform or even the abolition of police forces. The traditional considerations at the center of these debates include the practical challenges to enacting reforms, the expected efficacy of proposed changes for curtailing abuses, and the possible costs of these changes (whether measured in dollars or crime rates). The moral premises that are inherently embedded …

Granulated Organoclay As A Sorbent To Protect The Allelochemical Scopoletin From Rapid Biodegradation In Soil, Jose Antonio Galán-Pérez, Beatriz Gámiz, Rafael Celis

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Allelochemicals have been proposed as environmentally friendly bioherbicides, but their short persistence in soils often limits their performance as natural weed management products. In this study, incorporation into organoclay granules was investigated as a strategy to protect the allelochemical scopoletin from rapid biodegradation and prolong its persistence in soil. The commercial organoclay Cloisite® 10A, in its raw powder form, was used to prepare the granules. A kinetic study revealed slower sorption of scopoletin on the granules than on the organoclay powder and indicated an intraparticle pore diffusion mechanism. The half-life of scopoletin in soil under laboratory conditions increased significantly by …

Post-Grant Adjudication Of Drug Patents: Agency And/Or Court?, Arti K. Rai, Saurabh Vishnubhakat, Jorge Lemus, Erik Hovenkamp

Articles

The America Invents Act of 2011 (AIA) created a robust administrative system-the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB)-that provides a route for challenging the validity of granted patents outside of district courts. Congress determined that administrative adjudication of the validity of initial patent grants could be cheaper and more scientifically accurate than district court adjudication of such validity.

For private economic value per patent, few areas of technology can match the biopharmaceutical industry. This is particularly true for small-molecule drugs. A billion-dollar drug monopoly may be protected from competition by a relatively small number of patents. Accordingly, the social cost …

Remedying Trait-Based Employment Discrimination: Lessons From The Crown Act, Tolulope Odunsi-Nelson

Faculty Scholarship

Trait discrimination is bias against people who possess traits and characteristics that are culturally, commonly, or historically associated with a particular race. Discrimination against Black people with "natural hairstyles" and anti-Black colorism are two forms of trait discrimination that stem from employers' preferences for white aesthetics. The CROWN Act is a law that expands the definition of race in discrimination laws to include an individual's hair texture or hairstyle, if that hair texture or hairstyle is commonly and/or historically associated with a particular race or national origin. The need for the CROWN Act stems from the systemic failure of United …

Machine Learning Approaches To Improve Prediction In Health Care, Sadaf Kabir Jan 2022

Machine Learning Approaches To Improve Prediction In Health Care, Sadaf Kabir

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The availability of data and advanced data analysis tools in the health care domain provide great opportunities for the discovery of unknown or hidden patterns in clinical data. However, medical data is often incomplete and has poor quality, e.g., it contains missing values or too many unnecessary features. Majority of these issues are induced by uncertainty in clinical trials and examinations, such as human error, patients’ withdrawal during studies, malfunctioning of data collection equipment, and are generally inevitable. Properly addressing these issues can lead to the development of precise predictive models and consequently more reliable clinical decision making. Accurate predictive …
