The present study aimed to evaluate the biomechanical behavior of PEEK abutments with different heights on single titanium implants. To investigate the implant surface, different tests (scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray, and X-ray diffraction) were adopted. Herein, 20 implants received the 4.5 × 4.0 mm PEEK short abutment (SA) and 20 received the 4.5 × 5.5 mm PEEK long abutment (LA). The abutments were installed using dual-cure resin cement. To determine the fatigue test, two specimens from each group were submitted to the single load fracture test. For this, the samples were submitted to a compressive load of (0.5 mm/min; …

Not all patients with cancer and severe neutropenia develop fever, and the fecal microbiome may play a role. In a single-center study of patients undergoing hematopoietic cell transplant (n = 119), the fecal microbiome was characterized at onset of severe neutropenia. A total of 63 patients (53%) developed a subsequent fever, and their fecal microbiome displayed increased relative abundances of Akkermansia muciniphila, a species of mucin-degrading bacteria (P = 0.006, corrected for multiple comparisons). Two therapies that induce neutropenia, irradiation and melphalan, similarly expanded A. muciniphila and additionally thinned the colonic mucus layer in mice. Caloric restriction …

People living with HIV (PLWH) represent a vulnerable population to adverse musculoskeletal outcomes due to HIV infection, antiretroviral therapy (ART), and at-risk alcohol use. Developing measures to prevent skeletal degeneration in this group requires a grasp of the relationship between alcohol use and low bone mass in both the PLWH population and its constituents as defined by sex, age, and race. We examined the association of alcohol use with serum biochemical markers of bone health in a diverse cohort of PLWH enrolled in the New Orleans Alcohol Use in HIV (NOAH) study. To explore the effects of alcohol on bone …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Zooplankton are fundamental to aquatic ecosystem services such as carbon and nutrient cycling. Therefore, a robust evidence base of how zooplankton respond to changes in anthropogenic pressures, such as climate change and nutrient loading, is key to implementing effective policy-making and management measures. Currently, the data on which to base this evidence, such as long time-series and large-scale datasets of zooplankton distribution and community composition, are too sparse owing to practical limitations in traditional collection and analysis methods. The advance of in situ imaging technologies that can be deployed at large scales on autonomous platforms, coupled with artificial intelligence and …

Acute cardiorespiratory breathlessness accounts for one in eight of all emergency hospitalizations. Early, noninvasive diagnostic testing is a clinical priority that allows rapid triage and treatment. Here, we sought to find and replicate diagnostic breath volatile organic compound (VOC) biomarkers of acute cardiorespiratory disease and understand breath metabolite network enrichment in acute disease, with a view to gaining mechanistic insight of breath biochemical derangements. We collected and analyzed exhaled breath samples from 277 participants presenting acute cardiorespiratory exacerbations and aged-matched healthy volunteers. Topological data analysis phenotypes differentiated acute disease from health and acute cardiorespiratory exacerbation subtypes (acute heart failure, acute …

Aeroponic System Optimization For Future Sustainability, Taylor J. Johnson
Aeroponic System Optimization For Future Sustainability, Taylor J. Johnson
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
The global population is approaching 8 billion people. Agriculture accounts for 70% of global fresh water usage. Agricultural technologies must be developed to accommodate for the increase to meet the demand of the growing global population and the resultant increase of water used in agriculture. Aeroponic systems, which reduce water usage by over 90%, can supply an increasing quantity of crops while demanding less water.
The objective of this study is to determine the optimal droplet size for absorption of the nutrient solution to the roots of lettuce in an aeroponic system and how effectively the optimal conditions for one …

Student Research Symposium (SRS)
With the expansion of human space exploration, there is a growing demand to better understand the impacts of space stressors. These stressors include microgravity (µG), space radiation, extreme temperatures, and extreme isolation.
Ongoing research has demonstrated that the space environment alters the physiology of bacteria. The changes observed have included increases in biofilm formation, antibiotic resistance, and growth rate. Understanding the effects on bacteria in these conditions is vital as they can affect astronaut health, spacecraft life support systems, and space crops used for food.
The ERAU Space Microbiology Lab (SML) is working to identify how microbial communities are impacted …

Investigating The Magnetic Actuation Of Dynamic Cell Culture, Ashlyn Thorpe, Aeson Coen
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Currently there are various ways to model cell behavior in a lab setting for testing and simulation. As more methods are developed, more is discovered about how dynamic cell culture reacts to different stimuli and environments. This proposal discusses the prospects of magnetic actuation as a method of dynamic cell culture manipulation and simulation. This proposal seeks to use a biocompatible, tunable magnetic-poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (magnetic PLGA) porous composite scaffold that is interfaced with a magnetic actuation system. This new system would act as an easier method of observing cell culture in various magnetically developed environments. In all, magnetic actuation …
Gene-Poor Y-Chromosomes Substantially Impact Male Trait Heritabilities And May Help Shape Sexually Dimorphic Evolution, Ken Fedorka
Research Data and Datasets
How natural selection facilitates sexually dimorphic evolution despite a shared genome is unclear. The patrilineal inheritance of Y-chromosomes makes them an appealing solution. However, they have largely been dismissed due to their gene-poor, heterochromatic nature and because the additive genetic variation necessary for adaptive evolution is theoretically difficult to maintain. Further, previous empirical work has revealed only Y-linked sign epistatic variance segregating within populations, which can often impede adaptive evolution. To assess the evolutionary impact of Y-linked variation, we established replicate populations in Drosophila simulans containing multiple Y-chromosomes (YN populations) or a single Y-chromosome variant (Y1 populations) drawn from a …

An In Silico Study Of The Delta Opioid Receptor Using Small Molecules, Emily Dean
An In Silico Study Of The Delta Opioid Receptor Using Small Molecules, Emily Dean
Theses and Dissertations
The DOR is the least studied out of the three opioid receptors (Mu, Kappa, and Delta). The most is known of the Mu Opioid receptor (MOR) and the drugs that target it have led to the global opioid epidemic due to their adverse effects of tolerance and addiction. The DOR is not known for the same adverse effects and therefore, is a promising pharmacological target for the development of new opioid ligands. In this thesis, molecular modeling, simulations and other computational methods are introduced in Chapter 1 where these methods are used to study the activation mechanism of DOR (Chapter …

Theoretical Studies Of Molecule-Surface Interactions And Dynamics, Yingqi Wang
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Gas-surface scattering involves the conversion of energy in different forms in the impinging molecule, possible bond breaking and forming, and the energy transfer across gas-solid interface. Possible energy dissipation channels include adiabatic energy transfer to the motion of surface phonons and non-adiabatic interactions with surface electron-hole pairs. A complete understanding of the interplay of energy dissipation and physical/chemical changes in the molecule is vital for many important applications such as materials fabrication and heterogenous catalysis.
Gas-surface encounters may occur where non-adiabatic effects are negligible. Two such systems were investigated, both with ample experimental data. One is concerned with the scattering …

Quantifying the flow of energy and nutrients through food webs is foundational to understanding the structure and function of ecosystems. Here, I utilize the stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis of individual amino acids to trace the movement of essential amino acids through terrestrial and freshwater food webs in New Mexico, USA. I first explore isotopic patterns among co-occurring terrestrial plants and aquatic algae. I then combine this molecular isotopic approach with 16S and 18S rRNA sequencing to demonstrate the importance of gut microbiota as sources of essential amino acids to wild mammalian hosts. Next, I explore the roles of …

Background: Daily rhythms are observed in humans and almost all other organisms. Most of these observed rhythms reflect both underlying endogenous circadian rhythms and evoked responses from behaviours such as sleep/wake, eating/fasting, rest/activity, posture changes and exercise. For many research and clinical purposes, it is important to understand the contribution of the endogenous circadian component to these observed rhythms. Content: The goal of this manuscript is to provide guidance on best practices in measuring metrics of endogenous circadian rhythms in humans and promote the inclusion of circadian rhythms assessments in studies of health and disease. Circadian rhythms affect all aspects …
