Why Does The Federal Government Get A Pass? Applying Best Practices In Child Protection To The Circumstances Of Migrant Children And Families, Randi Mandelbaum
Why Does The Federal Government Get A Pass? Applying Best Practices In Child Protection To The Circumstances Of Migrant Children And Families, Randi Mandelbaum
American University Law Review
For too long, the United States has had a separate child-caring system for migrant children and families that operates alongside our domestic child welfare systems. The latter is a robust system focused on the principles of safety, wellbeing, and permanency; while the former flouts constitutional protections, separates children from parents, and perpetuates a system that is detaining children, warehousing them in large jail-like settings at worst, and sheltering them in large congregate care facilities at best. Children are being harmed, some irreparably.
Yet, if our child welfare laws reflect what we know to be proper standards for caring for vulnerable …

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly: Black Lives Matter Protests, The January 6th Insurrection, And Facial Recognition Technology As Admissible Evidence, Laura C. Powell
American University Law Review
The debate surrounding law enforcement’s use of facial recognition technology (FRT) continues to raise concerns about accuracy, reliability, and equity. Nonetheless, law enforcement agencies continue to purchase, implement, and use FRT as an investigative tool to identify suspects and make arrests. Yet, its ability to enter the courtroom remains untested. Consequently, this Comment seeks to answer the question if FRT was presented as evidence, would it be admissible? To answer that question, this Comment uses the arrests following Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests and the January 6th insurrection. These two events provide contrasting FRT software algorithms, racial compositions, and law …
Framework For The Evaluation Of Perturbations In The Systems Biology Landscape And Inter-Sample Similarity From Transcriptomic Datasets — A Digital Twin Perspective, Mariah Marie Hoffman
Framework For The Evaluation Of Perturbations In The Systems Biology Landscape And Inter-Sample Similarity From Transcriptomic Datasets — A Digital Twin Perspective, Mariah Marie Hoffman
Dissertations and Theses
One approach to interrogating the complexities of human systems in their well-regulated and dysregulated states is through the use of digital twins. Digital twins are virtual representations of physical systems that are descriptive of an individual's state of health, an object fundamentally related to precision medicine. A key element for building a functional digital twin type for a disease or predicting the therapeutic efficacy of a potential treatment is harmonized, machine-parsable domain knowledge. Hypothesis-driven investigations are the gold standard for representing subsystems, but their results encompass a limited knowledge of the full biosystem. Multi-omics data is one rich source of …

Effects Of Snake Fungal Disease On The Survival And Growth Of The Queensnake (Regina Septemvittata), Andrew Jerome Ibach
Effects Of Snake Fungal Disease On The Survival And Growth Of The Queensnake (Regina Septemvittata), Andrew Jerome Ibach
Theses and Dissertations--Forestry and Natural Resources
Having only emerged as a threat to snakes in 2006, relatively little is known of snake fungal disease’s (SFD) impacts on demographic processes, particularly survival and growth. I used data from an extensive capture-mark-recapture study to examine survival and growth in central Kentucky Queensnake (Regina septemivittata) populations. I found that diseased snakes and healthy snakes possessed similar monthly survival estimates (SFD positive 0.9687, 95% CI 0.8444 to 0.9944; SFD negative 0.8735, 95% CI 0.7518 to 0.9402) and that disease state transition probability from SFD negative to SFD positive, and SFD positive to SFD negative were also similar (N-P …
Nondestructive Multivariate Classification Of Codling Moth Infested Apples Using Machine Learning And Sensor Fusion, Nader Ekramirad
Nondestructive Multivariate Classification Of Codling Moth Infested Apples Using Machine Learning And Sensor Fusion, Nader Ekramirad
Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering
Apple is the number one on the list of the most consumed fruits in the United States. The increasing market demand for high quality apples and the need for fast, and effective quality evaluation techniques have prompted research into the development of nondestructive evaluation methods. Codling moth (CM), Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), is the most devastating pest of apples. Therefore, this dissertation is focused on the development of nondestructive methods for the detection and classification of CM-infested apples. The objective one in this study was aimed to identify and characterize the source of detectable vibro-acoustic signals coming from CM-infested …
Using Stream Restoration To Mitigate Stormwater Runoff In An Urban Watershed: A Case Study, Jonathan M. Brantley
Using Stream Restoration To Mitigate Stormwater Runoff In An Urban Watershed: A Case Study, Jonathan M. Brantley
Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering
The goal of this case study was to evaluate the effectiveness a 275 m regenerative stream restoration design to mitigate stormwater runoff in a highly urbanized watershed. The restoration resulted in a wide, wetland-like floodplain, comprised of a rock base that was overtopped with a filtration media (approximately 30% woodchips and 70% topsoil). The creation of the floodplain-wetland complex in tandem with filtration media lead to increased storage capacity and an increase in hyporheic exchange within the system. Significant reductions were found for the storm hydrograph parameters volume, peak discharge, and time to peak. Reductions in baseflows were also noted …
Non-Destructive Characterization Of Bio-Cemented Soils Via Seismic Wave Measurement, Kyle Best
Non-Destructive Characterization Of Bio-Cemented Soils Via Seismic Wave Measurement, Kyle Best
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The final outcome of this project is to examine the mechanical and resulting physical properties of bio-treated soil through microbial activity via non-destructive testing by seismic waves. The proposed bio-treatment strategy is through supplying specific nutrients for indigenous microbes within a soil specimen which in return produce calcium carbonates. The bio-minerals produced during these biogeochemical activities will improve the mechanical properties of soil by making cementation between soil grains. Additionally, a theoretical laboratory experimentational description will be provided to explain any associative effects on a specimen's water permeability or mechanical strength due to bio-mineralization within the samples. The characterization of …
Changes In The Zooplankton Community In Barren River Lake (South Central Ky) Between 2008 And 2020, Laurel Philpott
Changes In The Zooplankton Community In Barren River Lake (South Central Ky) Between 2008 And 2020, Laurel Philpott
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Zooplankton are small aquatic animals that serve an important role in transferring energy from phytoplankton to higher trophic levels. The zooplankton community composition in Barren River Lake from 2008 and 2020 was compared. A field study was conducted to not only describe the seasonal population dynamics of zooplankton in Barren River Lake, but also to determine if an invasive zooplankton, Daphnia lumholtzi, was present. While D. lumholtzi was found throughout Barren River Lake in 2008, it was absent from both resampled sites in 2019 and 2020. This, along with erratic patterns of emergence in several other zooplankton species, indicates …
Effects Of Melatonin Implantation On The Activity Levels Of Captive Snow Buntings (Plectrophenax Nivalis), Zoë Ward
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
In vertebrates, melatonin regulates many components of the circadian rhythm; depending on the organism’s location and time of year, the pineal gland will produce melatonin accordingly, controlling the sleep-wake cycle and breeding physiologies. However, locations at the poles in which the sun is above the horizon for multiple days at a time pose unique challenges for the organisms living there. The goal of this study was to examine how the implantation of melatonin in an arctic-breeding songbird affects its activity levels and circadian rhythm. The subject of this study, the snow bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis), is a small songbird …
A Descriptive Study: Perceptions Of Family Court Judges And Attorneys Regarding Parents Involved With Child Welfare Services As A Result Of Substance Misuse And/Or Mental Health Issues, Nathan Terrell
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
For three consecutive years, Kentucky has dealt with the worst rates of child maltreatment in the United States. Kentucky has implemented numerous measures to address this crisis. While many research efforts have focused on perceptions of children involved with child welfare services, there are few efforts researching the perception of judges and lawyers about parents involved with family court services.
This study used a mixed-methods approach to explore the perceptions of Kentucky Family Court Judges and family law attorneys about parental involvement with child welfare services as a result of substance misuse and/or mental health issues. The qualitative component of …
The Rite Of Becoming, Pilar Von Hummel
The Rite Of Becoming, Pilar Von Hummel
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The body is a term that has been vastly manipulated but never fully trapped. The body is in constant transformation and movement, always becoming. Catherine Malabou claims that our bodies are plastic, meaning they have the capacity to give and receive form as well as to explode. Plasticity which has an element of temporality is resistance, it is multiple and transformational. What are the conditions of possibility for the body to transform? Art resists and dance as art resists with the body: its main medium is the body. I claim that dance as art is a site to put plasticity …
The Carceral Death Machine: Savagery, Contamination And Sacrifice In The Contemporary Prison, Timothy Malone
The Carceral Death Machine: Savagery, Contamination And Sacrifice In The Contemporary Prison, Timothy Malone
CGU Theses & Dissertations
In this dissertation, I develop a convict epistemology that interweaves two elements: 1) a deep engagement with the works of particular philosophers and scholars investigating questions of punishment, violence, biopolitics and political philosophy 2) with some specific, publicly-reported incidents within California prisons in the late 20th and 21st centuries and my own detailed narration of events and the structural and quotidian dynamics of the prison yard as I experienced them as inmate #K73299 from 1997 to 2005. Diverging from Foucauldian theories of disciplinarity, I argue that under neoliberalism, the primary punishments that any inmate is subjected to within the carceral …

Sequencing The Mitochondrial Dna Of Lagenidium Juracyae, Kunal Kanwar
Sequencing The Mitochondrial Dna Of Lagenidium Juracyae, Kunal Kanwar
Honors Theses
Lagenidium oomycetes are fungus-like eukaryotic microorganisms that are closely related to diatoms and brown algae. One defining characteristic of Lagenidium oomycetes is their ability to act as a parasite during the larval stage of mosquitoes. Thus, over the past few decades, mosquito infecting Lagenidium oomycetes have been considered to serve as pesticides in various industries. However, some Lagenidium oomycetes have been linked to new mammalian skin conditions, particularly in dogs. As more research has been conducted about these skin conditions, there has been new data showing the presence of new species of Lagenidium oomycetes aside from the most popular Lagenidium …

B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (B-NHL) encompasses multiple clinically and phenotypically distinct subtypes of malignancy with unique molecular etiologies. Common subtypes of B-NHL, such as diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, have been comprehensively interrogated at the genomic level, but rarer subtypes, such as mantle cell lymphoma, remain less extensively characterized. Furthermore, multiple B-NHL subtypes have thus far not been comprehensively compared using the same methodology to identify conserved or subtype-specific patterns of genomic alterations. Here, we employed a large targeted hybrid-capture sequencing approach encompassing 380 genes to interrogate the genomic landscapes of 685 B-NHL tumors at high depth, including diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, …

Foreign language anxiety (FLA), the pervasive feeling of mild to severe apprehension when faced with communicating in a foreign language, is universally quite common. The manifestation of FLA in Thailand, where English is taught as a foreign language in secondary schools, is no exception. By employing descriptive phenomenology, this study sought to corroborate the existence of FLA at some stage during Thai secondary EFL classes and discover if FLA continues to trouble Thai adults working in international organizations. The population of this study is 12 Thai adults who are working as office workers, management, and administrative staff in an international …
What’S The Beef? The Fda, Usda, And Cell-Cultured Meat, Tammi S. Etheridge
What’S The Beef? The Fda, Usda, And Cell-Cultured Meat, Tammi S. Etheridge
Washington and Lee Law Review
Over the past ten years, administrative law scholarship has increasingly focused on interactions between multiple agencies. As part of this trend, most scholars have called for policymakers to combine multiple agencies, rather than rely on a single agency, to solve policy problems. The literature in this area espouses the benefits of shared regulatory space. But very little of this scholarship addresses when shared jurisdiction is problematic. This is particularly concerning when an agency opts into or cedes oversight authority to another agency at will, with little regard for whether the second agency is an appropriate regulator. The case of cell-cultured …

Patent Eligibility And Cancer Therapy, Christopher B. Seaman
Washington and Lee Law Review
As an empirical legal scholar, I am pleased to report that Sasha Hoyt has done what very few law students—and even many law professors—could achieve. She successfully conducted a novel empirical study to assess the real-world impact of a U.S. Supreme Court decision, Mayo Collaborative Services v. Prometheus Laboratories, Inc., on venture capital (VC) investment in startups and other companies that develop medical diagnostic technology.
As Ms. Hoyt notes, patent protection is particularly important for startup companies, as it can help protect their innovations from unauthorized use, attract funding and other investments, and foster collaboration with third parties. In …

The Impact Of Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase 1b On Impaired Insulin Signaling And Cognitive Impairment, Alexus S. Williams
The Impact Of Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase 1b On Impaired Insulin Signaling And Cognitive Impairment, Alexus S. Williams
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
High-fat diet (HFD) in mice, a mouse model of diet-induced obesity, display cognitive deficits, which correlate with hyperinsulinemia and reduced levels of brain insulin. The binding of insulin to the insulin receptor leads to tyrosine auto-phosphorylation of the receptor, which is a necessary step for the initiation of insulin transport. Protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) dephosphorylates tyrosine residues on the Insulin receptor. We hypothesize that diet-induced increases in PTP1B levels inhibits insulin receptor signaling contributing to cognitive impairment. To accomplish this, PTP1B levels, tyrosine phosphorylation, and cognition was assessed in mice placed on either a standard diet (STD) or HFD …
Examining Bias Against Women In Professional Settings Through Bifurcation Theory, Lauren Cashdan
Examining Bias Against Women In Professional Settings Through Bifurcation Theory, Lauren Cashdan
CMC Senior Theses
When it comes to women in professional hierarchies, it is important to recognize the lack of representation at the higher levels. By modeling these situations we hope to draw attention to the issues currently plaguing professional atmospheres. In a paper by Clifton et. al. (2019), they model the fraction of women at any level in a professional hierarchy using the parameters of hiring gender bias and internal homophily on behalf of the applicant. This thesis will focus on a key theory in Clifton et. al.’s analysis and explain its role in the model, specifically bifrucation analysis. In order to analyze …
Role Of Perirhinal To Prefrontal Cortex Reciprocal Connection In Methamphetamine-Induced Memory Deficits, Jordan Hopkins
Role Of Perirhinal To Prefrontal Cortex Reciprocal Connection In Methamphetamine-Induced Memory Deficits, Jordan Hopkins
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Chronic use of methamphetamine (meth) disrupts cortical processing across multiple cognitive domains including impulsivity, decision making and memory. Our laboratory has consistently shown that extended access to contingent meth self-administration reliably produces memory deficits in novel object recognition (NOR) tasks designed to test the “what” component of episodic memory in a rodent model. This type of memory is dependent on an intact function of the perirhinal cortex (PRH). However, the ongoing role of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in this task and the directionality of communication between the PRH and the PFC is not entirely understood. A set of four experiments …

Magnetic And Mechanical Properties Of Ultrasoft Magnetorheological Elastomers, Andy T. Clark
Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses
Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs), composite materials consisting of magnetic particles embedded in a non-magnetic elastomeric matrix, can reversibly modulate their mechanical and magnetic properties through tuning the applied magnetic field H. Recently, ultrasoft MREs have received tremendous attention due to their great potential in biomedical applications. However, the effects of the polymer stiffness and magnetic particle concentration on the magnetic and mechanical properties of ultrasoft MREs still need to be better understood. In this dissertation, the author presents a comprehensive investigation of the magnetic and mechanical properties of ultrasoft MREs as well as their biomedical applications.
The effect of polymer …

Understanding And Harnessing The Structural Features That Govern Hmg-Coa Reductase Activity, Edwin Ragwan
Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses
The enzyme 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme-A reductase (HMGR), which catalyzes the reduction of HMG-CoA to mevalonate using two equivalents of the cofactor NAD(P)H, is part of the mevalonate pathway, found in all kingdoms of life. This pathway is at the heart of natural product biosynthesis constituting one of the obligate routes to producing the building blocks for isoprenoids, which represent the largest and most diverse class of natural products. Natural products and its derivatives continue to provide important compounds in the fields of drug development, biomedical engineering, and commercially-driven products. Therefore, HMGR, which performs the rate-limiting step of the mevalonate pathway garners …

Design, Development And Benchmarking Of Machine Learning Algorithms In Biomedical Applications, Qi Sun
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
Machine learning algorithms are becoming the most effective methods for knowledge discovery from high dimensional datasets. Machine learning seeks to construct predictive models through the analysis of large-scale heterogeneous data. While machine learning has been widely used in many domains including computer vision, natural language processing, product recommendation, its application in biomedical science for clinical diagnosis and treatment is only emerging. However, the wealthy amount of data in the biomedical domain offers not only challenges but also opportunities for machine learning. In this dissertation, we focus on three biomedical applications from vastly different domains to understand the opportunities and challenges …
Further Investigation Of The Initiating Mechanism Of The Type I Collagen Glomerulopathy, Matthew James Freese
Further Investigation Of The Initiating Mechanism Of The Type I Collagen Glomerulopathy, Matthew James Freese
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The progressive accumulation of collagen and other extracellular matrix proteins in the renal mesangium results in fibrosis, glomerulosclerosis, and eventual renal failure. Mice deficient in integrating α2(I) collagen into the type I collagen structure, termed Col1a2-deficient mice, model kidney fibrosis through the condition Type I Collagen Glomerulopathy, because homotrimeric type I collagen accumulates extracellularly in the mesangium of renal glomeruli. Accumulation of homotrimeric type I collagen compresses blood vessels in glomeruli, which reduces filtration, increases pressure, and results in fibrosis. Picrosirius red (PSR) staining was used on Col1a2 deficient and wildtype mice to evaluate collagen deposition. Histological evaluation and …
