Financial Feasibility Study Of Incremental Modified Drugs Development By Domestic Pharmaceutical Industry, Manthana Laichapis
Financial Feasibility Study Of Incremental Modified Drugs Development By Domestic Pharmaceutical Industry, Manthana Laichapis
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The Thai pharmaceutical industry aims to achieve self-reliance in vaccines, drugs, and biologics as per the National Strategic Master Plan. Challenges include low research capacity and higher drug imports compared to domestic production. To promote self-reliance, more research on incrementally modified drugs (IMDs) is essential. This study analyzes the financial feasibility of developing IMD dosage forms for policy and investment decisions. A mixed-method approach, including type selection, investment models, cost structures, and financial analysis, was employed. Results favor sustained release, oro-dispersible tablet, and nasal spray formulations. IMD research and development took 7 to 13 years due to formulation complexity and …

Public-Private Partnerships For Implementing Sponge City Development : A Case Study Of Xiamen City, China, Ting Su
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
To mitigate the disasters caused by extreme weather induced by climate change in cities, the Chinese government has proposed the implementation of sponge cities in recent years. However, the construction of sponge cities is characterized by significant investments, long project cycles, and many risks. It is difficult to implement the project only by relying on government investment. Therefore, Public-private Partnership (PPP) model is gradually applied to sponge cities' implementation. As a model of urban infrastructure implementation, PPP can significantly reduce stakeholders' risks in some respects and accelerate infrastructure implementation in sponge cities. However, the PPP model has some disadvantages. Therefore, …

Production Of Pd-L1 Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor In Nicotiana Benthamiana, Thareeya Phetphoung
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Immune checkpoint antibodies disrupt the binding of receptor-ligand pairs which regulate immune response in cancer treatment. PD-1/PD-L1 pathway has become one target of the cancer immunotherapy approaches. Atezolizumab, the first FDA-approved antibody to PD-L1 in the treatment of metastatic urothelial, non-small cell lung, small cell lung, and hepatocellular cancers, is expressed in Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cell lines with several limitations, i.e., high costs of production, limited-capacity yields, and pathogen risks. To overcome these drawbacks, the transient expression in Nicotiana benthamiana leaves, which provide expandable scalability and inexpensive costs, was investigated by co-infiltration of Agrobacterium tumefaciens GV3101 cultures harboring Atezolizumab …

The “magic spot” alarmones (pp)pGpp, previously implicated in Clostridioides difficile antibiotic survival, are synthesized by the RelA-SpoT homolog (RSH) of C. difficile (RSHCd) and RelQCd. These enzymes are transcriptionally activated by diverse environmental stresses. RSHCd has previously been reported to synthesize ppGpp, but in this study, we found that both clostridial enzymes exclusively synthesize pGpp. While direct synthesis of pGpp from a GMP substrate, and (p)ppGpp hydrolysis into pGpp by NUDIX hydrolases, have previously been reported, there is no precedent for a bacterium synthesizing pGpp exclusively. Hydrolysis of the 5′ phosphate or pyrophosphate from GDP …

With the increased occurrence of wildfires around the world, interest in the chemistry of pyrogenic organic matter (pyOM) and its fate in the environment has increased. Upon leaching from soils by rain events, significant amounts of dissolved pyOM (pyDOM) enter the aquatic environment and interact with microbial communities that are essential for cycling organic matter within the different biogeochemical cycles. To evaluate the biodegradability of pyDOM, aqueous extracts of laboratory-produced biochars were incubated with soil microbes, and the molecular changes to the composition of pyDOM were probed using ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry (Fourier transform–ion cyclotron resonance–mass spectrometry). Given that solar irradiation …
Deciphering The Role Of Mitochondrial Physiology And Thermal Acclimation In Shaping Whole Organismal Performance Of An Invasive Forest Pest, Essa Alrashdi
Masters Theses
Environmental factors such as temperature are substantial determinants of the spongy moth, L. dispar, distribution, reproduction, and growth. Accumulating energy reserves at the larval stage is particularly important to L. dispar, since the larvae metamorphose into a fully-grown, non-feeding adult. As non-feeding adults, the energy balance of the pupae must be adequate, to ensure enough energy reserves for adult dispersal, egg maturation and overall persistence of the species in the region. At this stage, environmental temperature also determines daily metabolic demands, and the overall cost of sustaining ecologically relevant activities. Various hypotheses describing a mismatched growth and metabolic …

Does Social Support Mediate The Relationship Between Locus Of Control And Activity Levels?, Leah L. Oglesby
Masters Theses
The aim of the present study is to examine the mediating effect of social support on the relationship between internal locus of control (LOC) and engagement in activity, treating general physical activity and deliberate exercise as specific and separate domains. Two models will be investigated: a domain-general model and an exercise-specific model, the former examining the mediating effect of general social support on the relationship between health locus of control and general physical activity and the latter examining the mediating effect of exercise-specific social support on the relationship between exercise LOC and deliberate exercise engagement. Survey responses from 279 college-aged …
Pd-Based Photocatalysts For Heck C-C Cross-Coupling Reactions, Suha Ali Alshehri
Pd-Based Photocatalysts For Heck C-C Cross-Coupling Reactions, Suha Ali Alshehri
Masters Theses
Heck C-C cross-coupling reaction has been widely employed in synthetic organic chemistry because of its high efficiency and simplicity, however the conventional Heck C-C cross-coupling reaction conditions involve the use of an expensive toxicant phosphine-ligated palladium complexes, and high temperature. To address these drawbacks, a highly efficient, homogeneous photocatalyst based on BODIPY for the Heck C-C cross-coupling reactions of aryl iodide and methyl acrylate in DMF solvent under inert conditions has been developed. The 4-Py-BDP-Pd, 3-Py-BDP-Pd and, 2-Py-BOD-Pd catalysts were synthesized and purified using column chromatography. The optical properties of products and intermediates were studied by UV/vis absorption and fluorescence …
Comparison Of Bigheaded Carp Reproduction In Tributaries Of The Illinois And Wabash Rivers, David J. Yff
Comparison Of Bigheaded Carp Reproduction In Tributaries Of The Illinois And Wabash Rivers, David J. Yff
Masters Theses
Understanding environmental conditions that support bigheaded carp (Hypophthalmichthys sp.) reproduction in tributary rivers provides key predictions of their invasion throughout the United States. Past research, primarily in larger order rivers, identified factors such as discharge, temperature, and turbidity as main environmental drivers of bigheaded carp reproduction. I used the variable hydrologic conditions between the Illinois and Wabash Rivers to compare environmental conditions between tributaries of each basin, determine which conditions influence bigheaded carp reproduction in tributaries, and predict tributaries likely to support bigheaded carp reproduction. Three tributaries of the Illinois and Wabash Rivers were sampled for ichthyoplankton from …
Differences In The Growth And Bioenergetics Between Centrarchids In A Midwestern Power Plant Lake, Kyle Joseph Rempe
Differences In The Growth And Bioenergetics Between Centrarchids In A Midwestern Power Plant Lake, Kyle Joseph Rempe
Masters Theses
Black Crappie Pomoxis nigromaculatus and Bluegill Lepomis macrochirus are popular sportfishes that co-occur in similar bodies of water throughout most of the Central and Eastern United States but have distinct thermal physiologies. L. macrochirus is often found in warmer regions of freshwater reservoirs, where P. nigromaculatus tends to exploit cooler regions, especially in power plant cooling reservoirs. The coal-fired Coffeen Power Station ceased energy production in October 2019, providing an ideal scenario to study the organismal effects of the sudden shift in thermal regime. Previous studies showed that P. nigromaculatus inhabited the less thermally-impacted areas of Coffeen Lake, whereas L. …

The Role Of Irf-1 In Spontaneous Mouse Glioma, Aakash B. Vaidya
The Role Of Irf-1 In Spontaneous Mouse Glioma, Aakash B. Vaidya
Theses and Dissertations
Glioblastoma Multiforme has been shown to be one of the deadliest primary brain cancers. One of the reasons why GBM is so deadly, is a unique immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment that promotes GBM growth and progression. Both astrocyte and microglia have been implicated in immunosuppression. In this study, we explored the role of Interferon Regulatory Factor 1 (IRF-1) in astrocytes and glioma cells on the growth of spontaneous glioma tumors. IRF-1 is regulated by the JAK/STAT pathway and induces expression of Programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1). PD-L1 downregulates immune responses to glioma. We found that IRF-1 had no effect on spontaneous …

A Study On Developing Novel Methods For Relation Extraction, Darshini Mahendran
Theses and Dissertations
Relation Extraction (RE) is a task of Natural Language Processing (NLP) to detect and classify the relations between two entities. Relation extraction in the biomedical and scientific literature domain is challenging as text can contain multiple pairs of entities in the same instance. During the course of this research, we developed an RE framework (RelEx), which consists of five main RE paradigms: rule-based, machine learning-based, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based, Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT)-based, and Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs)-based approaches. RelEx's rule-based approach uses co-location information of the entities to determine whether a relation exists between a selected entity …

Characteristics Of Posterior Permanent Teeth With A Periradicular Diagnosis Of Symptomatic Apical Periodontitis: A Retrospective Study, Christina A. Martin
Theses and Dissertations
The diagnosis of apical periodontitis is based on radiographic manifestations and the results of the various clinical tests that can be performed as part of a routine dental examination. Apical periodontitis producing clinical symptoms involving a painful response to biting and/or percussion or palpation is given the diagnosis of symptomatic apical periodontitis (SAP). This study aimed to determine associations of SAP with gender, age, radiographic findings, diagnostic testing, pulpal diagnosis, and location of the tooth in the arch. Data for this study were obtained from patients of record treated at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry in the Department of …
Budget Impact Analysis Of Upadacitinib For The Management Of Moderate-To-Severe Atopic Dermatitis In Patients Treated With Systemic Therapies In The United States, Haya O. Alobaid
Theses and Dissertations
Objective: This study evaluated the budget impact of introducing upadacitinib for patients with uncontrolled moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD) from a United States (U.S.) private payer perspective.
Methods: The model estimated costs before and after the adoption of upadacitinib for a hypothetical one million covered lives over 3 years. The model included immunosuppressant agents and dupilumab. Market uptake was assumed to be 2% per year. Treatments incur a cost for drug acquisition, and the costs associated with drug administration, laboratory testing, and clinic visits. The model calculated the impact on the budget in 2022 U.S. dollars. Various assumptions on market …
Progress Towards Next Generation Modulators Of Ctbp's Oncogenic Effects, Jacqueline L. West
Progress Towards Next Generation Modulators Of Ctbp's Oncogenic Effects, Jacqueline L. West
Theses and Dissertations
Human C-terminal binding proteins (CtBP1 and CtBP2) are transcriptional coregulators of multiple genes in the human genome, including tumor suppressor genes (e.g., Bik, PTEN, BRCA1, and E-cadherin) as well as oncogenes (e.g. MDR1 and Tiam1). Both homologues of CtBP are overexpressed in many types of cancer, including breast cancer (92%), ovarian cancer (83%), colorectal cancer (64%), hepatocellular carcinoma (60%), gastric cancer, prostate cancer, and pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Further, expression levels of CtBP correlate with worse prognostic outcomes and more aggressive tumor features because it promotes proliferation, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and cancer stem cell self-renewal activity.

The Influence Of Salinity On The Structure And Function Of Soil Prokaryotic Communities In Coastal Freshwater Wetlands, Joseph C. Morina Ii
The Influence Of Salinity On The Structure And Function Of Soil Prokaryotic Communities In Coastal Freshwater Wetlands, Joseph C. Morina Ii
Theses and Dissertations
Microbial communities are critical biological components of the world’s ecosystems, and their respiratory pathways are directly involved in the biogeochemical cycling of essential nutrients. As genomic technologies advance, allowing for more detailed profiling of microbial communities, efforts have successfully linked microbial community composition to ecosystem-level functions and have shown microbial communities are susceptible and resistant to disturbance events. The goal of this dissertation is to address the temporal scales in which microbial communities respond to the disturbance of salinization, and the repercussions this has on microbially-meditated carbon and nitrogen cycling. Coastal freshwater wetlands are an excellent study system to investigate …
A Gun For Every Woman, Gentë Retkoceri
A Gun For Every Woman, Gentë Retkoceri
Theses and Dissertations
Six centuries ago in Kosova, my home country, unmarried women known as sworn virgins, were forced to adopt a male persona and carry a gun to protect themselves. But today, guns have become tools of oppression and violence against women. And while the legal system carries penalties for domestic violence, marital rape is excluded. To shine a light on, and expose the topic of hidden violence, my thesis uses artivism to address a sensitive but provocative issue, exhibiting a large-scale sculpture of a gun, designed to provoke raw emotions; to challenge visitors to consider the terror felt by women threatened …
Rational Design Of Flexible And Stretchable Electronics Based On 3d Printing, Yuanhang Yang
Rational Design Of Flexible And Stretchable Electronics Based On 3d Printing, Yuanhang Yang
Theses and Dissertations
Flexible and stretchable electronics have been considered as the key component for the next generation of flexible devices. There are many approaches to prepare the devices, such as dip coating, spin coating, Mayer bar coating, filtration and transfer, and printing, etc. The effectiveness of these methods has been proven, but some drawbacks cannot be ignored, such as lacking pattern control, labor consuming, requiring complex pretreatment, wasting conductive materials, etc.
In this investigation, we propose to adopt 3D printing technology to design flexible and stretchable electronics. The objective is to rationally design flexible and stretchable sensors, simplify the preparation process, form …
Innovative Techniques Of Neuromodulation And Neuromodeling Based On Focal Non-Invasive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation For Neurological Disorders, Ivan C. Carmona-Tortolero
Innovative Techniques Of Neuromodulation And Neuromodeling Based On Focal Non-Invasive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation For Neurological Disorders, Ivan C. Carmona-Tortolero
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation aims to develop alternative technology that improves the current range of application of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), on a scale that would permit defining specific non-invasive treatments for Parkinson’s disease and other neurological disorders. This is accomplished through three specific objectives. 1) The design of a neurostimulation system that increases the focality in TMS to regions of narrow target areas and variable depths in the brain cortex. 2) The assessment of the feasibility of novel high-frequency neuromodulation techniques that would allow increasing the focality in deeper areas beyond the cortical surface. 3) The development of a computational model …
Improving The Early Detection Of Cardiovascular Toxicity Secondary To Radiotherapy For Lung Cancer Via Patient-Specific Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Alireza Omidi
Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: To assess the cardiopulmonary-induced dose variation on the left ventricle (LV) and evaluate the spatiotemporal evolution of cardiac/aortic function following radiotherapy (RT).
Methods: 8 lung cancer patients who were scheduled to receive RT were recruited for this study. Each patient underwent one 4D-CT at baseline. MRI scans including cine GRE, T1/T2, LGE, and 4D-flow were acquired at baseline, 3-months and 6-months post-RT to evaluate the cardiac/aortic function. Finally, image registration was used to assess the cardiopulmonary-induced dose variation on the LV.
Results: Mean RT-dose was minimum during inspiration and systole (at expiration). No significant differences were found in the …
