Black Vs. White: What Is Bipolar Disorder?, Delmy Mendoza, Kendall Childs, Maedot Aklilu, Tynise Phillips
DC Health and Academic Prep Program (DC HAPP)
This intervention will show that underdiagnosing and misdiagnosing mental health disorders can be prevented by creating more high school medical pipeline programs and encouraging POC students interested in healthcare to participate in diversifying the healthcare system. Pipeline programs have shown to be beneficial in increasing the numbers and quality of underrepresented ethnic minority applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds, and achievement motivation. For example, the pipeline program The Teen Medical Academy created in 2008 combated unrepresentative health disparity in adolescents by successfully improving interest in medical and allied health careers, confidence in their ability to accomplish a health profession, learning surgical and …
Reconstructing Regional Paleoenvironments And Geomorphic History Of High Plains Playa-Lunette Systems, Alyssa E. Sims
Reconstructing Regional Paleoenvironments And Geomorphic History Of High Plains Playa-Lunette Systems, Alyssa E. Sims
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Playas are ephemeral upland-embedded wetlands found in semiarid and arid regions worldwide. Lunettes are isolated dunes that form along the downwind margin of playas. The paleoclimatic and geomorphic history of High Plains playa-lunette systems (PLSs) are poorly understood. To address this, we characterize the stratigraphy of four PLSs in southwest Kansas, USA. Methods include: 1) collect soil-sediment cores from playa centers and windward slopes of lunettes; 2) describe cores using USDA techniques; 3) estimate age of stratigraphic units using radiocarbon (14C); and 4) reconstruct paleoenvironmental conditions using stable carbon isotopes (13C) and particle size analysis. Playa stratigraphy is relatively simple …

Disorder: The Impact Of Structure And Function On Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Treatment Response, Daniel Martin Mccalley
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is the third leading cause of preventable death in the United States. While there are several treatment options available, none of these interventions specifically target the neural circuits known to contribute to alcohol use, abstinence, and relapse. In the following chapters, this dissertation will introduce transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) as a potential neural-circuit based therapeutic tool for AUD. Following a brief introduction to the neural circuitry involved in AUD (Chapter 1), Chapter 2 reviews the results of a multimodal randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trial evaluating 10 sessions of TMS delivered to the frontal pole as a therapeutic …

Tree Root Influence On Building Foundations In Expansive Clay Soils In North Texas, Rocio Vegamartinez
2022 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Coupled with the expansive soil profile and climatic nature of Texas, trees repeatedly damage pavements and building foundations. The drying of tree roots places residential foundations at risk for soil desiccation and displacement. This research seeks to grasp a better understanding of the relationship between Texas expansive soils, tree root growth, and residential foundations in the North Texas area. This paper presents a case study of a residential house in Arlington, Texas, experiencing foundation cracking and settlement with two large trees on the property. Electrical Resistivity Imaging was done to monitor the relationship between the soil and the tree roots. …

The Negative Effects Of Cannabis On Memory Processes, Kiera Wingo
2022 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
The purpose of this review is to determine if there is a negative effect of cannabis on memory processes. Specifically, the negative effects of cannabis on short-term, working, and episodic memory were examined within acute or chronic users. Several formal databases and Google Scholar were used to find relevant literature, where key words provided search parameters and narrowed results. A final total of 29 relevant studies were used in the results. The resulting literature employed numerous study methods including N-back, Sternberg, verbal recall measures, and neuroimaging techniques. The results confirmed a negative relationship between cannabis and memory when participants were …
Comparing Prairie Management Methods’ Effects On Three Native Texan Grasses, Stephanie Howell
Comparing Prairie Management Methods’ Effects On Three Native Texan Grasses, Stephanie Howell
2022 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
The Texas Blackland Prairie habitat is under extreme threat. Currently, only 1% of the original prairie remains. Restoration efforts across the state have aimed to address these concerns. This research set out to test the efficacy of the methods used to restore prairies regarding three grasses. Big Bluestem, Andropogon gerardii, Little Bluestem, Schizachyrium scoparium, and Indiangrass, Sorghastrum nutans, were surveyed to establish their species abundance on two fields in North Texas. Based on their abundance and the history of each field, conclusions were drawn on the efficacy of the maintenance. Seeding was found to be inconsequential for A. gerardii and …
Increasing Hpv Vaccination In Elliott And Lawrence Counties, Keeghan Francis
Increasing Hpv Vaccination In Elliott And Lawrence Counties, Keeghan Francis
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Appalachian counties within Kentucky have higher rates of HPV-related cancers, including cervical cancer. HPV vaccines are effective at reducing the risk of cervical cancer, but vaccination coverage in Appalachia remains low. The proposed program relies on recommended strategies to improve vaccine uptake by increasing access and demand for HPV vaccines. This will be done through school vaccine clinics and parent education on HPV, cervical cancer, and HPV vaccines.
A Program Of Race Betterment: The Emergence And Evolution Of Eugenic Ideas In Michigan, Branden Mceuen
A Program Of Race Betterment: The Emergence And Evolution Of Eugenic Ideas In Michigan, Branden Mceuen
Wayne State University Dissertations
Contemporary concerns with technologies like CRISPR and the proliferation of state laws restricting abortion have led people to wonder if we are witnessing a return of eugenics. I analyze the development and evolution of eugenic ideas and policies throughout the 20th century, using the state of Michigan as a frame of reference. In examining the eugenic theories and policies psychiatrists and physicians endorsed, I demonstrate that eugenics was a key component of preventive public medicine in the first two decades of the 20th century. I show how they educated the public on eugenics based on both environmentalist and hereditarian ideas …

Factors Affecting The Sex Ratio Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) Fetuses In Arkansas, Jorista Garrie, Ralph Meeker
Factors Affecting The Sex Ratio Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) Fetuses In Arkansas, Jorista Garrie, Ralph Meeker
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Health of the mother is known to affect the sex-ratio of the offspring in sexually dimorphic mammals. Both density-dependent and environmental factors (conditions at present, or seasonal conditions the year before) could impact the health of the mother. There are however two opposing hypotheses for whether a mother in good health should invest more in a strong son (that can father many offspring) or in a daughter (that can stay in the same area and use good resources). Fetuses from 1,208 female white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) were collected over a 10-year period (2002-2012), across 75 counties in Arkansas. …

Seasonal Testicular Histology And Acystic Lobular Spermatogenesis In The Western Lesser Siren, Siren Intermedia Nettingi (Caudata: Sirenidae), Stanley E. Trauth
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
I investigated the seasonal testicular histology and acystic lobular spermatogenesis in the Western Lesser Siren, Siren intermedia nettingi, from periodic sampling of this salamander over a span of 21 yr (1994-2015) in northeastern Arkansas. My results include the following general findings: 1) the largest testicular lobules occurred primarily in January-February during spermiogenesis and spermatozoa maturation; 2) lobular regression and spermatogenic cell recrudescence were underway by late March; 3) proliferation of secondary spermatogonia in lobules was prominent in May; 4) transformation of secondary spermatogonia into primary spermatocytes occurred by mid-July, and these cells became larger in diameter through increased nuclear …
Distribution And Breeding Of The Black-Bellied Whistling-Duck (Dendrocygna Autumnalis) In Arkansas, With A Brief Chronology Of Distribution And Breeding In Southeastern United States, C. Renn Tumlison
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The Black-Bellied Whistling-Duck (Dendrocygna autumnalis) was a rare bird first reported from Arkansas in 1982, when it was seen in Hempstead Co. in southwestern Arkansas. Observations surged in parts of the state about 2005, then again about 2016, and the bird is now fairly common seasonally in many parts of the state. By use of online sources for citizen science, we elucidate the history of occurrence and present analysis of seasonal distribution of this bird in Arkansas. Individuals occur in Arkansas throughout the year, but observations are most common and widely distributed from March-September, after which most individuals …

Ground-dwelling species of birds, such as domestic chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus), experience difficulties sustaining flight due to high wing loading. This limited flight ability may be exacerbated by loss of flight feathers that is prevalent among egg-laying chickens. Despite this, chickens housed in aviary style systems need to use flight to access essential resources stacked in vertical tiers. To understand the impact of flight feather loss on chickens’ ability to access elevated resources, we clipped primary and secondary flight feathers for two hen strains (brown-feathered and white-feathered, n = 120), and recorded the time hens spent at elevated resources (feeders, …

Capacity And Kinetics Of Light‑Induced Cytochrome Oxidation In Intact Cells Of Photosynthetic Bacteria, Mariann Kis, James L. Smart, Péter Maróti
Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science
Light-induced oxidation of the reaction center dimer and periplasmic cytochromes was detected by fast kinetic difference absorption changes in intact cells of wild type and cytochrome mutants (cycA, cytC4 and pufC) of Rubrivivax gelatinosus and Rhodobacter sphaeroides. Constant illumination from a laser diode or trains of saturating flashes enabled the kinetic separation of acceptor and donor redox processes, and the electron contribution from the cyt bc1 complex via periplasmic cytochromes. Under continuous excitation, concentrations of oxidized cytochromes increased in three phases where light intensity, electron transfer rate and the number of reduced cytochromes were the rate liming steps, respectively. By …
Failure: A Heuristic Inquiry Of The Experience Of Failure Through A Nature Based Art Therapy Process, Lisa Manthe
Failure: A Heuristic Inquiry Of The Experience Of Failure Through A Nature Based Art Therapy Process, Lisa Manthe
Art Therapy | Doctoral Dissertations
The aim of this arts based study was to investigate the experience of failure during the dissertation process. Through a heuristic lens, its objective was to gain an understanding of the tacit experience of failure and the influence of a nature art based process on the understanding of failure. Failure is integral to the scientific method (Wang et al. 2019), enhancing understanding and teaching us valuable skills. Intentional engagement with our response to failure allows us to address and incorporate possibilities that are often unseen (Nelson et al., 2017). The art process illuminates tacit knowledge, unearthing creative solutions and untapped …

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is regarded as a versatile tool for studying the composition and structure of matter. This work has studied the preparation of a SERS substrate based on a self-assembling plasmonic nanoparticle film (SPF) in a polymer matrix. Several synthesis parameters for the SPF are investigated, including the size of the particles making up the film and the concentration and type of the self-assembling agent. The result of testing systems with different characteristics is discussed using a model substance (pseudo isocyaniniodide). These models can be useful in the study of biology and chemistry. Research results contain the optimal …

Investigating The Role Corynebacterium Matruchotii Has Within Supragingival Plaque Spatial Organization And Its Response To Oral Streptococci And Saliva, Eric Ganeto Almeida
Open Access Dissertations
Human supragingival plaque (SUPP) is a polymicrobial biofilm on the tooth surface above the gumline, comprised of ordered structures with spatial associations between specific bacterial taxa. Recent microscopy and microbiome data have suggested that some plaque structures are scaffolded by the abundant filamentous bacterium Corynebacterium matruchotii decorated with Streptococcus species. These taxa are able to make a reproducible structure known as the ‘Hedgehog’ model in vivo where Streptococcus species tend to form 'corncob' like structures around the terminal ends of C. matruchotii. As these species colocalize in vivo, we hypothesize that they also interact biochemically with one another. …
Submerged Independent Agencies, Brian D. Feinstein, Jennifer Nou
Submerged Independent Agencies, Brian D. Feinstein, Jennifer Nou
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
Independent agencies are in the judicial crosshairs. Scholars criticize their efficacy—while still puzzling over how to define the form. By and large, this attention focuses on the top of the agency hierarchy, the extent to which agency heads are insulated from presidential control. What this perspective misses, however, is that power is also exercised by tenure-protected civil servants below. This phenomenon exists not because Congress has delegated them authority, but because executive branch actors have. Consequently, there exists another species of independent agency that requires a reckoning: call them “submerged independent agencies.” These entities are “agencies” because they wield discretionary …
Nys Bar Association Annual Meeting Lecture Outline: The New Environmental Rights In Ny’S Constitutional Bill Of Rights, Nicholas A. Robinson
Nys Bar Association Annual Meeting Lecture Outline: The New Environmental Rights In Ny’S Constitutional Bill Of Rights, Nicholas A. Robinson
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
It is too easy this winter to miss the signature Human Rights event in New York, the overwhelming vote last November 4th to recognizing the Human Right to the Environment. Competition for our attention is fierce: the Pandemic, political rivalries playing out in Washington, D.C., and angst about extreme weather events and other climate change impacts. So, I welcome this opportunity to illuminate the hope and promise of Article 1, Section 19 in New York’s Bill of Rights: “Each Person shall have a right to clean air and water, and a healthful environment.” Most New York lawyers have yet …

The Power Of Reciprocity: How The Confederated Salish & Kootenai Water Compact Illuminates A Path Toward Natural Resources Reconciliation, Michelle Bryan
Water Law Review
This article chronicles the negotiation and recent passage of the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes Water Compact, which creates one of the most innovative water management regimes envisioned among sovereigns. The Compact's journey toward ratification is extraordinary, as the parties over the span of three decades worked to overcome historically entrenched racism and political opposition to craft a model that would provide enough water for all peoples and the fishery. Compounding the challenge, the Flathead Reservation itself contains vast swaths of checkerboard land held by non-Indians and a major federal irrigation project that has permanently altered the hydrograph of the …
Everything Is Bigger In Texas, Including The Need To Incentivize And Implement Innovative Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems As A Method Of Water Reuse, Haley Varnadoe
Water Law Review
Texas will need to adapt to a drier climate and reduced water supply in the 21st century as the negative hydrological effects of climate change continue. Rising temperatures will accelerate evaporation of surface water resources, which in turn both increases reliance on depletable groundwater resources and de creases the amount of surface water available for aquifer recharge. As a result, Texans who rely on either groundwater or surface water to meet their domestic water needs-particularly those in rural aid regions-may suffer as both quantities decrease in the coming decades. The practice of domestic water reuse presents one solution to a …

Comparing Trebouxia Diversity In Lichen Genera Sympatric With The Niebla Species Complex., Anthony Perugini, Louise A. Lewis, Zachary M. Muscavitch
Undergraduate Papers
Lichens are one of the most successful mutualisms on Earth. The ecology and distribution of lichen symbionts likely influences their association and genetic structure . Two sister genera of lichenized fungi Niebla and Vermilicinia are endemic to the fog deserts on the west coast of North America. Species of Trebouxia, a genus of green algae found worldwide, are the associated photobiont partners to the Niebla/Vermilicinia species complex. Recent work demonstrated that Niebla and Vermilicinia are highly specific for only a few closely related Trebouxia molecular species (OTUs). This project examines the diversity and broad specificity of algae with lichen …
Decapod Sentience: Broadening The Framework, Cecilia De Souza Valente
Decapod Sentience: Broadening The Framework, Cecilia De Souza Valente
Animal Sentience
A framework for studying sentience in decapods is of great value, but how high a cost (in suffering) to each individual decapod (or any animal) is warranted for collecting scientific evidence of sentience? The lack of evidence for some of the target article’s proposed criteria surely results from the fact that research is focused mainly on biomedical studies, ecotoxicology, and commercial production, with decapod sentience and welfare seen as only a secondary research topic. I draw attention also to the possibility of a wider framework that includes all felt experiences, from suffering to pleasure.
Sentience In Decapods: Difficulties To Surmount, Michael L. Woodruff
Sentience In Decapods: Difficulties To Surmount, Michael L. Woodruff
Animal Sentience
In the target article Crump et al. present 8 criteria to assess whether decapods experience pain. Four of these -- sensory integration, motivational trade-offs, flexible self-protection, and associative learning -- could be used to assess sentience in general. In this commentary I discuss difficulties with using these criteria to provide evidence of sentience in decapods, particularly if this evidence is to change public opinion and policies. These difficulties are lack of evidence, the potential to eventually explain the neurobiological basis of the behaviors chosen as criteria, thereby eliminating any explanatory work for sentience, and the reluctance to bring animals that …
Pain In Pleocyemata, But Not In Dendrobranchiata?, Gary Comstock
Pain In Pleocyemata, But Not In Dendrobranchiata?, Gary Comstock
Animal Sentience
Crump et al.’s contribution to assessing whether decapods feel pain raises an important question: Is pain distributed unevenly across the order? The case for pain appears stronger in Pleocyemata than in Dendrobranchiata. Some studies report pain avoidance behaviors in Dendrobranchiata (Penaeidae) shrimp, but further studies are needed to determine whether the chemicals used are acting as analgesics to relieve pain, or as soporifics to reduce overall alertness. If the latter, the most farmed shrimp species may not require the same level of protection as crabs, crayfish, and lobsters.
Sentience As Part Of Emotional Lives, Frans B. M. De Waal
Sentience As Part Of Emotional Lives, Frans B. M. De Waal
Animal Sentience
It is high time to explore the sentience of invertebrate animals, but this topic cannot be discussed without also exploring their emotional lives, including positive emotions. Sentience probably evolved to allow the regulation of emotions by endowing them with feelings.
Decapod Sentience: Promising Framework And Evidence, Jon Mallatt, Todd E. Feinberg Md
Decapod Sentience: Promising Framework And Evidence, Jon Mallatt, Todd E. Feinberg Md
Animal Sentience
Strong points of the target article by Crump et al. are that it offers clear criteria for judging whether decapods are sentient, an effective semi-quantitative grading system for this purpose, and an astute, critical review of the literature. It concludes plausibly that major subgroups of decapods are sentient. A minor problem is that it includes classical, Pavlovian learning as a marker of sentience along with the more valid marker of complex (e.g., operant) learning. Another minor problem is that it does not distinguish results that are negative because of likely absence of sentience from results that are negative because they …
