The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is set in a narrative atemporality that functions outside the bounds of time, hinting at all of the feminist protests that used the term witch as a way to empower women, and using the genre of horror to aid in the feminist protests. As Sabrina becomes a champion for other students in her patriarchal schools (one witch and one mortal) she becomes a transgenerational feminist in the show.

This special issue explores the intersections of diversity and decolonisation within the field of Italian Studies. By engaging with postcolonial theory, migration, and critical race studies, the contributors reframe traditional narratives of Italian culture and history. The issue investigates the legacies of colonialism, the experiences of racialized communities in Italy, and the role of Italian Studies in fostering inclusive and equitable academic practices. Through interdisciplinary approaches, the essays call for a critical re-evaluation of the field, advocating for a more diverse, decolonial, and globally conscious understanding of Italy's past and present.

21% of U.S adults experienced mental illnesses in 2020. Nearly 1 in 4 active- duty military personnel showed signs of mental health conditions in 2014 [89]. Mental health can be identified in the body by different biomarkers. These biomarkers potentially could be controlled by riboswitches, which could help mental illnesses and regulate diseases. Riboswitches are desirable in these cases due to responding without affecting vital functions. Riboswitches are located in mRNA and switch “ON” or “OFF” depending on the concentration of a biomarker [13]. In this research, riboswitches were re-engineered to take a known riboswitch and control its response in …
The Effect Of Fractal Dimensionality On Behavioral Judgments Of Built Environments, William Andrew Stalker

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
This research examines the effects of fractal dimensionality on ratings of beauty, relaxation, and interest, when these patterns are incorporated in a built space. Previous findings suggest that fractal patterns can be used to mimic the beneficial psychological and physiological effects that arise from viewing nature. This research focuses on studying the impact of fractal patterns when presented within urban environments. The findings here are primarily consistent with previous research. Medium D patterns are preferred over the other pattern complexities. Low D patterns are consistently rated as more relaxing. High D patterns are rated as being more interesting over low …

Tropical Materialisms concur on at least three things: humans are always entangled with non-human/material agents; such entanglement is necessary for any creative act to take place; and these same entanglements allow us to interrogate and re-evaluate preconceived notions about the world. This Special Issue aligns itself with the fields of new materialism and posthumanism. What is particularly exciting is the opportunity to rearticulate these fields in tropical terms, that is, with scholarly and creative practices from and about the tropical world. This focus is crucial given that current scholarship in new materialism and posthumanism predominantly comes from European temperate contexts …
Directed Evolution Studies On A Firefly Luciferase Variant To Improve Signal Intensity For In Vivo Bioluminescence Imaging, Allison Racela
Directed Evolution Studies On A Firefly Luciferase Variant To Improve Signal Intensity For In Vivo Bioluminescence Imaging, Allison Racela
Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology Honors Papers
In previous research, bioluminescence proteins have been used for in vivo bioluminescence deep tissue imaging. A familiar organism that produces bioluminescent light, is a firefly. Firefly luciferase normally produces yellow-green light (λmax ~ 560 nm) with LH2. There are several reasons for improving bioluminescent light to emit in the near-infrared window (nIR) between 650 nm and 900 nm. The main reasons for improving nIR detectability include that the light transmits more efficiently through mammalian tissues due to less light scattering, nIR light is also less likely to be absorbed by hemoglobin, and water. Overall this provides better resolution for deep …
Characterization Of The Northern Star Coral, (Astrangia Poculata) Behavioral And Physiological Response To Microplastics, Alice Ball
Biology Honors Papers
Preliminary studies have shown that corals ingest microplastics mistaken as food or co-ingested as food, and that ingestion can have effects on physiology. Coral plastic feeding preferences and egestion times are still not well understood. In a series of experiments, I investigated how exposure to microplastics impacts Astrangia poculata, the Northern Star coral, behavior in response to microplastics (feeding and egestion), and whether microplastic exposure and ingestion has any physiology effects. In the first behavioral experiment, I exposed corals to either brine shrimp eggs, or 500 μm polyethylene spheres, and did not find a significant difference in feeding rates. In …

The Influence Of The Environmental Quality Incentives Program On Local Water Quality, Pengfei Liu, Yu Wang, Wei Zhang
The Influence Of The Environmental Quality Incentives Program On Local Water Quality, Pengfei Liu, Yu Wang, Wei Zhang
Environmental and Natural Resource Economics Faculty Publications
The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) is the primary conservation program on working agricultural land. The United States Department of Agriculture obligated over $15 billion through EQIP cost-sharing contracts during the fiscal years 2009–2019. The voluntary nature of the program and the lack of performance assessment have led to speculations regarding the effectiveness of the program in delivering environmental benefits, in particular for improving water quality. This study provides quantitative estimates of the influence of EQIP payments on local water quality at a national scale. We link monitoring station level water quality readings with EQIP contract data and exploit the …

Expanding Knowledge On Occupations, One Harmful Occupation At A Time, Taylor Dingus
OCCUPATION: A Medium of Inquiry about Health through Occupation
Humans are both natural doers and occupational beings, but in order to consider them as such, one must understand all occupational choices, the meanings and human behavior behind the choices, and the environment in which the choices take place (Helbig & McKay, 2003). Considering self-harm, substance abuse, and addiction as occupations advances this understanding of humans as occupational in nature who are molded by their occupational choices and factors surrounding them (Wasmuth, Brandon-Friedman, & Olesek, 2016). This study aimed to gain an understanding of the occupational nature of humans that engage in occupations defined as harmful by society in order …

We examine fossil foraminiferal assemblages from 20 sediment cores to assess sudden relative sea-level (RSL) changes across three mud-over-peat contacts at three salt marshes in northern Humboldt Bay, California (~44.8°N, −124.2°W). We use a validated foraminiferal-based Bayesian transfer function to evaluate the variability of subsidence stratigraphy at a range of 30-6000 m across an estuary. We use the consistency in RSL reconstructions to support estimates of coseismic subsidence from megathrust earthquakes. To assess the variability of subsidence estimates, we analyzed: nine examples of the 1700 CE earthquake (average of 0.64 ±0.14 m subsidence; range of 0.24 ± 0.27 to 1.00 …
Passive-Aggressive Intervention: The Impact Of Mandated Paid Parental Leave On Childcare Labor, Justin Fiume
Passive-Aggressive Intervention: The Impact Of Mandated Paid Parental Leave On Childcare Labor, Justin Fiume
Theses - Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy
Gender inequality is one of the few fundamentally persistent inequalities within society, especially in the United States. This thesis will use a Marxist-feminist approach to explore the impact of the United States’ capitalist market economy on gender-specific public and private life structures. Specifically, how inequality is exacerbated as women transition to motherhood. This paper hypothesizes that a mandated paid parental leave would alleviate some of this ‘second burden’ by encompassing fathers in its eligibility. We formulate a difference-in- difference model to estimate the causal effects of two current states who mandate paid parental leave and evaluate the average treatment effect …
Parallel State Currency: A Mechanism To Expand Sovereignty For Countries With Foreign Debt And Trade Deficits, Angelica Huerta Ojeda
Parallel State Currency: A Mechanism To Expand Sovereignty For Countries With Foreign Debt And Trade Deficits, Angelica Huerta Ojeda
Theses - Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy
Some countries, due to historical events, are within a creditor-debtor relationship and are unable to make full use of their currency. Debtor countries tend to not be fully sovereign -are either dependent on food, energy, or technology- which results in them being reliant on capital inflows. Foreign debt and lack of sovereignty feed each other into a debt trap and create an endless chain of dependency. This essay attempts to explore the possibility that governments with foreign debt and lack of sovereignty, like Mexico, should create another unit of account while keeping the current one. The parallel currency would not …

In the United States (US), limited English proficiency is associated with a higher risk of obesity and diabetes. “Intersectionality”, or the interconnected nature of social categorizations, such as race/ethnicity and gender, creates interdependent systems of disadvantage, which impact health and create complex health inequities. How these patterns are associated with language-based health inequities is not well understood. The study objective was to assess the potential for race/ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status to jointly moderate the association between primary language (English/Spanish) and having obesity and diabetes. Using the 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (n = 431,045), weighted generalized linear …

The Relative Potency Of Two Drugs Using The Confidence Interval For Ratio Of Means Of Two Normal Populations With Unknown Coefficients Of Variation, Warisa Thangjai, Sa-Aat Niwitpong
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
In the paper, the relative potency of two drugs using confidence intervals for the ratio of two means of normal distributions with unknown coefficients of variation is considered. The new confidence intervals were constructed using the large sample approach, the method of variance estimates recovery (MOVER) approach, and then compared with the existing approach: the generalized confidence interval (GCI) approach of Lee and Lin [1]. A simulation study showed that the large sample approach can be used to estimate the confidence interval for the ratio of normal means with unknown coefficients of variation when the value of σY /σX is …

In this paper, we investigate the probabilistic characteristics for the new better than renewal used in laplace transform order class, the closure properties under various reliability operations such as convolution, mixture, mixing, homogeneous Poisson shock model are studied. Moreover, a new hypothesis test is constructed to test exponentiality against the new better than renewal used in laplace transform order based on Laplace transform technique. Pitman’s asymptptic efficiency of the test are studied and compared with other tests. Furthermore, the powers of these test are calculated for some commonly used distributions in reliability such as Linear Failure Rate, Gamma and Weibull …

Stress-Strength Reliability From Odd Generalized Exponential-Exponential Distribution With Censored Data, M. O. Mohamed, Ahmed H. A. Reda
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
Reliability and survival analysis is important in lifetimes of the units in an experiment which depend on modeling of events which depend on time, systems, components, or random variables. This paper proposes an inferences model for a simple stress-strength model with Type-II censored sample. This case is studied in our paper with Odd Generalize Exponential-Exponential distribution (OGEE), by using the point and interval estimation parameters of (OGEE) distribution for type-II censored . have been studied and compared with Mean square errors to decide which method is more suitable for studying the reliability with the model of stress-strength. The data were …

Generalization Of The Ratio Of Minimized Kullback- Leibler Divergence Discrimination Technique To Bivariate Marshall-Olkin Family, Hanan. M. Aly, Ola. A. Abuelamayem
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
Different bivariate lifetime distributions are used to analyze lifetime data and study the reliability of the products. Sometimes, we find more than one distribution that fit the data well. In this case, we should select the best one. That is why the discriminant analysis is used. In literature, there is only one method used for bivariate lifetime distributions, which is the likelihood ratio test. In this paper, we try to generalize the ratio of minimized Kullback-Leibler divergence to be used as a discrimination method in the bivariate case and it could be applied on the bivariate Marsall-Olkin family. we will …

Bayesian Parameter Estimation And Model Selection For Gallbladder Cancer Data Of Two Countries, Richa Srivastava, Rakesh Ranjan, Himanshu Misra
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
The paper proposes statistical model and complete Bayesian inference for cancer survival data of two countries. Complete posterior analysis is done by generating random samples from posterior surface. Gibbs sampler, Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC)method has been used, for generating samples from posterior distribution. The paper also provides algorithm for Gibbs sampler generation scheme for proposed model parameters as well its density estimation. Model compatibility and inter model comparisons, using the measures of Bayesian information criterion (BIC) and deviance information criterion (DIC) has been used.

In this paper, a novel method is proposed to build an improved 1-D discrete chaotic map called flipped product chaotic system (FPCS) by multiplying the output of one map with the output of a vertically flipped second map. Two variants, each with nine combinations, are shown with trade-off between computational cost and performance. The chaotic properties are explored using the bifurcation diagram, Lyapunov exponent, Kolmogorov entropy, and correlation coefficient. The proposed schemes offer a wider chaotic range and improved chaotic performance compared to the constituent maps and several prior works of similar nature. Wide chaotic window and improved chaotic complexity …

We present a general framework for improving the chaotic properties of CMOS-based chaotic maps by cascading multiple maps in series. Along with two novel chaotic map topologies, we present the 45 $nm$ designs for four CMOS-based discrete-time chaotic map topologies. With the help of the bifurcation plot and three established entropy measures, namely, Lyapunov exponent, Kolmogorov entropy, and correlation coefficient, we present an extensive chaotic performance analysis on eight unique map circuits (two under each topology) to show that under certain constraints, the cascading scheme can significantly elevate the chaotic performance. The improved chaotic entropy benefits many security applications and …

The General Population's Perception Of Factors Associated With Positive Or Negative Perceptions Of Physical Therapy Care In Those With Low Back Pain, Jada M. Strowbridge
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Low back pain (LBP) has a global impact on health and is a substantial contributor to long term disability. The economic burden of LBP is immense and it is advancing annually. Costs attributing to LBP in the United States is about $84.1 to $624.8 billion. Physical therapy is commonly recommended for those with LBP since it is linked to improved clinical outcomes. However, patient perceptions can influence how this treatment approach is perceived. It is unclear if these perceptions can influence outcomes for patients suffering from LBP. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the factors associated with …

Levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation have increased in many parts of the world due to the anthropogenic destruction of the ozone layer. UV radiation is a potent immunosuppressant and can increase the susceptibility of animal hosts to pathogens. UV radiation can directly alter immune function via immunosuppression and photoimmunotolerance; however, UV may also influence pathogen defences by affecting the distribution of energy resources among competing physiological processes. Both defence against UV damage and repair of incurred damage, as well as the maintenance of immune defences and responding to an immune challenge, are energetically expensive. These competing demands for finite energy …
