Should India Lend To Gdh The Same Weight As To Gdp?, Sudhavna Char
International Review of Business and Economics
Growth for growth's sake goes against the grain of sustainable economics. It is not maintainable on the basis of full-cost pricing. The billing should include health and environmental costs, including charges for the exhaustion of natural resources, egregious disparities in wealth distribution, and increases in mental and physical sickness. Today’s material growth model transmutes many economic endeavors into preying on current and future generations. Unwittingly, the single-minded pursuit of growth without a global perspective has been resulting in loss of life and property, besides undermining prospects of life’s basics for upcoming generations. This is myopic, ignoring catastrophes hitting home. In …

Repurposing Of Small Molecule Inhibitor Ym-155 Inhibits High-Risk Neuroblastoma Growth By Directly Inhibiting Survivin Protein, Danielle Crystal Rouse
Theses and Dissertations
High-risk neuroblastoma (NB) is an aggressive pediatric tumor which develops from the extracranial sympathetic nervous system and accounts for almost 15% of all childhood cancer-related deaths. Current therapies include high-dose chemotherapy and radiation which have long-term toxic side-effects. Despite these intensive therapies, the overall survival rate of NB is less than 50%. Therefore, developing novel therapeutic approaches by directly targeting the molecular mechanisms that drives NB progression is very important. In the present study, we analyzed genomic datasets of 1235 NB patients and discovered that overexpression of survivin coding gene BIRC5 strongly correlates with poor overall and event-free survival of …
Human Otop1 Proton Channel Can Function As A Monomer, Gabriella Abigail Ulloa
Human Otop1 Proton Channel Can Function As A Monomer, Gabriella Abigail Ulloa
Theses and Dissertations
Otopetrins (OTOP) represent a new family of eukaryotic proton channels that do not share structural similarities with other renowned ion channels. Otop1 was initially known for its involvement in vestibular function and its significance for otoconia formation before it was established as a bona fide sour taste receptor. The cryo-EM structures for several Otop channels have been determined and demonstrated Otop1 as a homodimer comprised of two subunits. Each subunit constitutes twelve transmembrane helices that can be further partitioned into two structurally similar six transmembrane domains designated as the N and C domains. Molecular dynamic simulations have also previously shown …

Electronic Health Record (EHR) data, a rich source for biomedical research, have been successfully used to gain novel insight into a wide range of diseases. Despite its potential, EHR is currently underutilized for discovery research due to its major limitation in the lack of precise phenotype information. To overcome such difficulties, recent efforts have been devoted to developing supervised algorithms to accurately predict phenotypes based on relatively small training datasets with gold-standard labels extracted via chart review. However, supervised methods typically require a sizable training set to yield generalizable algorithms, especially when the number of candidate features, p, is …

Examining Pre-Service Teachers' Perceptions And Understanding Of Visual Literacy Instruction, Lin Gou, Daibao Guo, Eun Hye Son
Literacy, Language and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations
Despite the importance of promoting visual literacy in content instruction, there is scant research investigating pre-service teachers’ perceptions and understandings of visual literacy instruction. To fill these research gaps, we developed a unit in a literacy methods course that integrated visual literacy and social studies instruction for preservice teachers. In this qualitative study, we analyzed 65 elementary and secondary pre-service teachers’ reflections after the unit. Findings revealed that a majority of pre-service teachers developed a positive attitude toward visual literacy (instruction), demonstrated better understanding of visual displays (ViDis) and visual literacy skills, and recognized the advantages of using ViDis for …

Retinal Detachment: What Are The Types And Potential Causes?, Mera Skoblo
Retinal Detachment: What Are The Types And Potential Causes?, Mera Skoblo
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Retinal detachment is one of the few ocular emergencies. Depending on the extensiveness of the detachment, and whether it is macula on or macula off, will affect the patient’s visual acuity after treatment. Therefore, it is vital that after experiencing any common retinal detachment symptoms, the patient sees an ophthalmologist immediately. High-risk factors for retinal detachment include aging, ocular trauma, high myopia, and prior eye surgery. Statistically, the cause of a given retinal detachment often determines the specific type of detachment that occurs. There are three forms of retinal detachment, categorized separately based on their anatomical characteristics.
Gene Therapy For Cancer Treatment, Nechama Grossman
Gene Therapy For Cancer Treatment, Nechama Grossman
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Cancer is a genetic disease in which cells grow uncontrollably and can spread throughout the body. Cancer cells have distinguishing traits which facilitate their unlimited growth; these traits can be used in the development of gene therapy cancer treatment, which includes: CRISPR, a gene-editing tool that can precisely modify human DNA; Kymriah, which induces T cells to kill cancer cells; Gendicine and zinc metallochaperones, which utilize p53, a protein vital for the destruction of cancer cells. Scientists continue to improve gene therapy treatments, making them available to more patients and decreasing the toxicity of treatments.

Conference Papers
Older adults (≥65 years) are the fastest growing population group. Thus, ensuring nutritional well-being of the ‘over-65s’ to optimise health is critically important. Older adults represent a diverse population – some are fit and healthy, others are frail and many live with chronic conditions. Up to 78% of older Irish adults living independently are overweight or obese. The present paper describes how these issues were accommodated into the development of food-based dietary guidelines for older adults living independently in Ireland. Food-based dietary guidelines previously established for the general adult population served as the basis for developing more specific recommendations appropriate …

A Transition From Tradition: Employing Ta3 And Traditional Age & Sex Estimation Methods To Study Paleodemography In Umm An-Nar Arabia, Alyssa Bolster, Hannah Jeanlouis, Lesley A. Gregoricka, Jaime M. Ullinger
Year 2: AABA 2022 – Denver, CO
Background: Transition Analysis 3 (TA3) has enormous potential for the study of commingled skeletal material. Previous demographic analyses on commingled remains from Umm an-Nar (2700-2000 BCE) tombs Unar 1 and Unar 2 at the site of Shimal (Ras al-Khaimah, UAE) placed the majority of individuals in a generalized “adult” category using dental eruption. We hypothesized that we would identify more older adults (50+) in both tombs using TA3, and that more would be found in Unar 2, prior to the intensification of agriculture and regional aridification.
Methods: Commingled and fragmentary skeletal fragments (pubic symphyses (n=51), humeri (n=85), femora (n=194)) were …

Estimating Age From Fetal And Young Nonadults From Basilar Portions At Umm An-Nar Tombs From The Uae, Rachael Orkin, Christian Berends, Lesley A. Gregoricka, Jaime M. Ullinger
Year 2: AABA 2022 – Denver, CO
Background: The Umm an-Nar period (2700-2000 BCE) was a time of significant change in southeastern Arabia, prompted by agricultural shifts and seen in shifting social and mortuary practices. Communal tombs Unar 1 and Unar 2 from the Emirate of Ras al-Khaimah (United Arab Emirates), which date to the end of the third millennium BCE, contained commingled, cremated, and fragmented skeletons, a common mortuary pattern in this period.
Methods: Unfused basilar portions of nonadult occipital bones were examined to assess tomb membership and inclusion of young individuals. Three methods were used to analyze age, and measurements taken included sagittal length and …

Guidebook For Omaha's Urban Geology And Anthropocene Nebraska Well Drillers 2022 Field Trip, Harmon Maher, Ashlee L. Dere, Melina Luethje
Geography and Geology Faculty Books and Monographs
This geologic field trip focus is somewhat atypical but arguably reflects an ongoing evolution within the geosciences. Instead of traveling out into rural settings to look at outcrops and the stratigraphy exposed, or rural landforms and their geologic history, this field trip is focused on built and engineered environments in the Omaha area and the ‘modified’ associated geologic processes such as surface and groundwater flow, weathering, and soil formation. The ongoing evolution includes an increase in a multidisciplinary system science approach and is driven by a need to address environmental and resource management challenges using new tools and conceptual frameworks. …

"It Will Help Him Wonderfully": Placebo And Meaning Responses In Early Medieval English Medicine, Rebecca Brackmann
"It Will Help Him Wonderfully": Placebo And Meaning Responses In Early Medieval English Medicine, Rebecca Brackmann
Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications
Many early English medical remedies have been dismissed, even by sympathetic scholars, as “mere placebo,” with the implication that therapeutic benefits to the patient, if any, are thereby insignificant. My article challenges such dismissals of placebo responses in Old English medicine. I draw on current research demonstrating that in certain conditions, a placebo effect, or “meaning response” (to use Daniel Moerman’s term), can have striking success in bringing about healing. I describe contemporary clinical practices shown to enhance patient responses to pharmaceutical treatments both inert and active, and demonstrate that these strategies are also visible in early English medical practice. …

Recombinant Ahpc Antigen From Mycobacterium Bovis Boosts Bcg-Primed Immunity In Mice, Özgün Firat Düzenli̇, Sezer Okay, İnci̇ Kazkayasi Bölük, Ayşe Fi̇li̇z Öner
Turkish Journal of Biology
Tuberculosis (TB) is still one of the most common infectious diseases around the world despite the widespread use of BCG (bacille Calmette-Guerin) strain of Mycobacterium bovis as a vaccine. This vaccine does not always protect people from TB, and, thus, new effective vaccines or vaccination strategies are being investigated. In this study, alkyl hydroperoxide reductase (AhpC) from M. bovis was evaluated as a new candidate vaccine antigen against TB in BALB/c mice model. The ahpC gene was amplified from M.bovis genome, cloned, and expressed in Escherichia coli. Vaccine antigen AhpC was formulated with Montanide ISA 61 VG, an oil-based emulsion …

This study is based on a careful reading of Critical Race Theory: An Introduction (Third Edition, 978-1479802760) by Richard Delgado and Jean Stefancic. This book is considered “the best introduction available to Critical Race Theory.” Both Delgado and Stefancic are guiding lights of the CRT movement. Nevertheless, the reader should be aware that any ideological movement has disagreements among its adherents. My comments regarding CRT are responses to Delgado and Stefancic. The reader should also be aware that I am highly critical of CRT. My purpose here is to explain what CRT is, and point out its mistakes, exaggerations, and …
