Degradation Issue Of Fescue-Forbs Rangeland In The Mountain Steppe Of Mongolia, Otgontuya Lkhagvajav, Lkhagvajav Namdag, Munkhbat Chimed

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The total area of Fescue-forbs rangeland in Mongolia is 10 million hectares, accounting for 8.5% of total rangeland area. The Fescue-forbs rangeland is the main type of rangeland in the mountain steppe. The Mongolian rangeland has degraded in the last two decades mainly due to overgrazing and climate change. The main objective of this study was to determine the change of plant community and reduction of frequency and productivity of the dominant species Festuca lenensis in different degradation states of rangeland. The dominant species and main plant functional groups have completely changed in Fescue-forbs rangeland in all three states of …

Observations On Regeneration Of The Pedipalp And Legs Of Scorpions, Martin Watz, Jason A. Dunlop Jan 2022

Observations On Regeneration Of The Pedipalp And Legs Of Scorpions, Martin Watz, Jason A. Dunlop

Euscorpius

An Opisthacanthus asper (Peters, 1861) (Hormuridae) shows a relatively rare example of pedipalp regeneration in which the lost tibia and tarsus was replaced by a smaller, curved element of uncertain homology to either the fixed or free finger. A comparable abnormal palp described in the literature hints that pedipalps can only regenerate a structure of this form, regardless of the site of amputation. An Olivierus caucasicus (Nordmann, 1840) (Buthidae) is described in which claws (pretarsus) of leg III regenerated directly at the distal end of the tibia, while in leg IV the claws regenerated at the end of a truncated …

Inducing Cognitive Reflection And Its Impact On Contradictory Belief Holding, Meg Powers, Marci Decaro Jan 2022

Inducing Cognitive Reflection And Its Impact On Contradictory Belief Holding, Meg Powers, Marci Decaro

Posters-at-the-Capitol

The idea that there are 2 distinct processing modes is seen throughout social and cognitive psychology research. One mode is generally fast, automatic, and relatively effortless, while the other is slow, systematic, and effortful. One mechanism of effortful processing is cognitive reflection which is one’s ability to reflect on their intuition. The Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT) is a 3-item measure that quantifies a person’s ability to recognize an intuitive answer as incorrect and identify the correct response. Additionally, a yea-yeaing score was collected to measure how often a person agrees with a statement and its opposite (i.e., endorses contradictory beliefs). …

One-Pot Conversion Of Carboxylic Acids To Aldehydes, Hannah Khan, Michael Nantz, Saurin Sutaria Jan 2022

One-Pot Conversion Of Carboxylic Acids To Aldehydes, Hannah Khan, Michael Nantz, Saurin Sutaria

Posters-at-the-Capitol

There are many different ways to convert a carboxylic text acid to an aldehyde. A common way to accomplish this transformation is to use multiple steps (e.g., reduction of the carboxylic acid to the corresponding alcohol followed by selective oxidation to the aldehyde). Our success in reducing the diacid muconic acid (1) to muconaldehyde (4) in a relatively mild, one-pot process has led us to examine whether the method can be expanded to other carboxylic acids. We report here our findings using benzoic acid as a representative substrate.

Breadth Of Vaccinated Cancer Patient Humoral Response To Sars-Cov-2 Spike Protein And Rbd Variants, Julia Corman, Joey Breckenridge Jr., Adrienne M. Bushau-Sprinkle, Krystal T. Hamorsky, Joshua L. Fuqua

Posters-at-the-Capitol

SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the COVID-19 of which several variants have emerged, such as the B.1.351 SARS-CoV-2 variant. The Receptor Binding Domain (RBD), located within the Spike protein is an immunogenic epitope for potent neutralizing antibodies. Current mRNA vaccines encode for the Spike protein, allowing the body to build antigen-specific antibodies. Assays measuring protective antibodies are essential to manage the COVID-19 pandemic and can be used as a platform for variant screening. RBD-foldon 2.2 is a novel antigen produced by fusing RBD with the trimerization domain Fibritin from Bacteriophage T4. Its amino acid sequence is based on the original …

The electronic age has made users search beyond print media while looking for information resources. Latest research work are sent across the world through electronic means and no serious researcher of this age ever depends solely on print media rather the use of internet, websites, e-mail etc are the language of the day. Functionally, university libraries of the current dispensation provide access to both print and electronic resources to serve users and to increase the visibility of their institutions, and as a measure …

Decomposition Rates Of Organic Material Across Herbivore Treatments In A Nutrient-Rich Semi-Arid Sodic Savanna, L. L. Erasmus, H. Van Coller, S. Claassens, F. Siebert Jan 2022

Decomposition Rates Of Organic Material Across Herbivore Treatments In A Nutrient-Rich Semi-Arid Sodic Savanna, L. L. Erasmus, H. Van Coller, S. Claassens, F. Siebert

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Decomposition is a major determinant of terrestrial nutrient cycling and therefore an important regulator of ecosystem structure and function. It has been widely documented that large mammalian herbivores (LMH) act as a significant driver of changes to aboveground structure and modifications to edaphic properties. Little is known about the role of herbivory, and particularly the loss thereof, in mediating essential ecological processes in a herbivore-adapted system. The Nkuhlu exclosures, a large-scale, long-term exclusion experiment in the Kruger National Park, South Africa, provided an opportunity to explore the effects of herbivory and/or its long-term exclusion on decomposition and stabilisation of detrital …

Comparative Anatomical Study Of The Grasses In The Range Lands Of Kovilpatti, Tamil Nadu Of India, B. Makesh Kumar, J. Stephan, P. Kumar

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Grasses are the crucial component of the rural rangeland ecology. Besides the morphological studies, micro-morphological characters such as stem anatomy were also investigated in this study. So as to get detailed understanding about variations during the summer and monsoon within species and also differentiating the species with the help of supplementary characters such as number of cortical layers and vascular bundles, xylem vessel length etc. In grass anatomy the characters are rather constant for some species and highly variable for others probably often due to the climatic variation. Still the characters are very helpful to differentiate and determine the genus. …

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has become a serious threat to global public health, underscoring the urgency of developing effective therapies. Therapeutics and, more specifically, direct-acting antiviral development are still very much in their infancy. Here, we report that two hepatitis C virus (HCV) fusion inhibitors identified in our previous study, dichlorcyclizine and fluoxazolevir, broadly block human coronavirus entry into various cell types. Both compounds were effective against various human-pathogenic CoVs in multiple assays based on vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) pseudotyped with the spike protein and spike-mediated syncytium formation. The antiviral effects …

Identifying the composition of avian diets is a critical step in characterizing the roles of birds within ecosystems. However, because birds are a diverse taxonomic group with equally diverse dietary habits, gaining an accurate and thorough understanding of avian diet can be difficult. In addition to overcoming the inherent difficulties of studying birds, the field is advancing rapidly, and researchers are challenged with a myriad of methods to study avian diet, a task that has only become more difficult with the introduction of laboratory techniques to dietary studies. Because methodology drives inference, it is important that researchers are aware of …

Identifying Conifer Tree Vs. Deciduous Shrub And Tree Regeneration Trajectories In A Space-For-Time Boreal Peatland Fire Chronosequence Using Multispectral Lidar, Humaira Enayetullah, Laura Chasmer, Christopher Hopkinson, Dan Thompson, Danielle Cobbaert

Aspen Bibliography

Wildland fires and anthropogenic disturbances can cause changes in vegetation species composition and structure in boreal peatlands. These could potentially alter regeneration trajectories following severe fire or through cumulative impacts of climate-mediated drying, fire, and/or anthropogenic disturbance. We used lidar-derived point cloud metrics, and site-specific locational attributes to assess trajectories of post-disturbance vegetation regeneration in boreal peatlands south of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada using a space-for-time-chronosequence. The objectives were to (a) develop methods to identify conifer trees vs. deciduous shrubs and trees using multi-spectral lidar data, (b) quantify the proportional coverage of shrubs and trees to determine environmental conditions driving …

Heterologous Production Of Plant Secondary Metabolites Resveratrol And Caffeic Acid In E.Coli And Synechocystis Sp. Pcc 6803, Yong Xue

Theses and Dissertations

Caffeic acid and resveratrol are polyphenol compounds produced by plants as secondary metabolites to protect against biotic and abiotic stresses. In the last decades, numerous studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of these compounds on human health as anticancer, antioxidant, anti-virus and anti-inflammatory agents. In plants, both caffeic acid and resveratrol are synthesized either from phenylalanine or tyrosine. Recently, heterologous production of phenylpropanoids using genetically engineered bacteria is gaining more and more attentions from industry because it can dramatically improve the yield with reduced costs. The major aim of the work is to explore the possibility of using Synechocystis or …

Massively Parallel Assessment Of The Functional Effects Of De Novo Autism Spectrum Disorder Patient-Derived Genetic Variants In 3’ Untranslated Regions, Tomas Lagunas Jr

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Human genetic studies have identified a large number of patient-derived de novo variants in presumptive regulatory regions of the genome that pose a challenge for interpretation of their effects since the impact of regulatory variants is highly dependent on the cellular context. In particular, current investigations have made significant investments in sequencing the genomes of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) families as a diagnostic method and to further understand the genetic architecture of this complex neurodevelopmental disease. These studies have revealed an enrichment of mutations in the untranslated regions (UTRs) of genes, which are noncoding regulatory regions, in ASD genomes. Assessment …

Cell-Type Specific Expression Of Apolipoprotein E By Astrocytes And Microglia: Implications For The Development Of Amyloid-Β Pathology In Alzheimer Disease, Thomas Mahan

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Alzheimer disease (AD) is characterized by two main pathological hallmarks, extracellular amyloid plaques primarily comprised of the amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide, and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles mainly comprised of the tau protein. Although the pathologies underlying AD were first described over one hundred years ago, researchers today are still trying to understand how the development of Aβ pathology is regulated in the hopes of developing more effective treatments. Advances in genetics over the last several decades have allowed for several genetic risk factors to be identified that increase or decrease ones likelihood for developing (AD). Of these genetic risk factors, the strongest …

Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cells And Cancer Immunotherapy, Chunmei Fu, Li Zhou, Qing-Sheng Mi, Aimin Jiang

Dermatology Articles

Despite largely disappointing clinical trials of dendritic cell (DC)-based vaccines, recent studies have shown that DC-mediated cross-priming plays a critical role in generating anti-tumor CD8 T cell immunity and regulating anti-tumor efficacy of immunotherapies. These new findings thus support further development and refinement of DC-based vaccines as mono-immunotherapy or combinational immunotherapies. One exciting development is recent clinical studies with naturally circulating DCs including plasmacytoid DCs (pDCs). pDC vaccines were particularly intriguing, as pDCs are generally presumed to play a negative role in regulating T cell responses in tumors. Similarly, DC-derived exosomes (DCexos) have been heralded as cell-free therapeutic cancer vaccines …

The Role Of Endoplasmic Reticulum Modifications In Protein Export In Plasmodium Falciparum, Alexander Polino Jan 2022

The Role Of Endoplasmic Reticulum Modifications In Protein Export In Plasmodium Falciparum, Alexander Polino

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Following invasion of a host red blood cell (RBC), the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum undertakes a program of dramatic host cell renovation. The parasite exports hundreds of effectors into the RBC, altering its shape and rigidity, increasing its permeability to nutrients, and constituting an intracellular transport network that traffics adhesins to the RBC surface. These adhesins mediate binding of the parasitized RBC to the host vascular endothelium, allowing the parasite to avoid destruction in the spleen, but contributing to the pathogenesis of cerebral malaria. Most of these exported effectors bear a pentameric amino acid sequence that marks them for protein …

What Do Epidemic History And Sexual Minority Men’S Experiences Of Hiv And Covid-19 Teach Us About Pandemic Preparedness?, Amy Braksmajer, Andrew London

Population Health Research Brief Series

For many, COVID-19 feels like the first, massive, life-threatening epidemic of infectious disease they have faced. However, for sexual minority individuals who have experienced trauma and loss stemming from the HIV epidemic, there are many similarities. This brief summarizes findings from interviews with men who have lived through both pandemics as a way to gain insights into the commonalities and differences of their experiences. Findings show that men who lived through both epidemics believe the government did not do enough to respond to either crisis. To better prepare for future epidemics, public health efforts must be less fragmented, including a …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Spatial regimes (the spatial extents of ecological states) exhibit strong spatiotemporal order as they expand or contract in response to retreating or encroaching adjacent spatial regimes (e.g., woody plant invasion of grasslands) and human management (e.g., fire treatments). New methods enable tracking spatial regime boundaries via vegetation landcover data, and this approach is being used for strategic management across biomes. A clear advancement would be incorporating animal community data to track spatial regime boundaries alongside vegetation data. In a 41,170-hectare grassland experiencing woody plant encroachment, we test the utility of using animal community data to track spatial regimes via two …
