Can Physical Activity Modulate Pain Perception During Ontogenesis?, Maciej Pawlak, Aleksandra Jazdzewska, Katarzyna Leznicka
Can Physical Activity Modulate Pain Perception During Ontogenesis?, Maciej Pawlak, Aleksandra Jazdzewska, Katarzyna Leznicka
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
The aim of the paper is to emphasise the significance of physical activity as an element directly or indirectly modulating the perception of pain during ontogenesis. Pain is a distinctive sensory sensation and also a subjective criterion of health or disease. In contrast to other modalities (taste, smell, touch), it triggers solely negative emotions and sensations. Pain is a highly individualised sensory phenomenon, involving the physical, cognitive and emotional spheres of human life. Different reactions to pain during ontogeny most often result from the loss of communication skills, a systematic decrease in the functions of all systems and organs, in …

Single-Use Technologies V: Building The Future
Sterilization/decontamination by gamma irradiation is a standardized process for some medical devices, drugs and in the food field and has many advantages due to its significantly low toxicity. Many worldwide industrial sites offer gamma irradiation as a means of sterilization, and in the last decade, new irradiation modality such as X-rays or electron-beam raises. These methods make also possible the sterilization of products without significant heating and to handle them directly in their final packaging, to overcome the challenges encountered e.g., due to sterilization capacity constraints. All irradiation modalities are reliable and reproducible processes and ensure sterility over time by …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Studying ecosystem dynamics is critical to monitoring and managing linked systems of humans and nature. Due to the growth of tools and techniques for collecting data, information on the condition of these systems is more widely available. While there are a variety of approaches for mining and assessing data, there is a need for methods to detect latent characteristics in ecosystems linked to temporal and spatial patterns of change. Resiliencebased approaches have been effective at not only identifying environmental change but also providing warning in advance of critical transitions in social-ecological systems (SES). In this study, we examine the usefulness …

Qualifying X-Ray Irradiation Of Single-Use Systems To Address New Challenges Associated With Single-Use Growth, James Hathcock
Single-Use Technologies V: Building The Future
With single-use technologies playing a pivotal role supporting the rapid development and scale-out of vaccine manufacturing, the experience has highlighted benefits resulting from standardization of SUT requirements and identified key challenges ahead for SUT, including the availability of gamma irradiation capacity. This cobalt-60-dependent gamma irradiation market is led by a relatively small number of market providers, and underpins the entirety of the single-use bioprocess supply chain, regardless of integrator. As the demand for gamma irradiation has quickly outstripped the available industry capacity, significant collaborative industry efforts have been underway to qualify X-ray irradiation as an equivalent alternative to gamma irradiation, …

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Fisheries management is a complex task made even more challenging by rapid and unprecedented socioecological transformations associated with climate change. The Resist-Accept- Direct (RAD) framework can be a useful tool to support fisheries management in facing the high uncertainty and variability associated with aquatic ecosystem transformations. Here, RAD strategies are presented to address ecological goals for aquatic ecosystems and social goals for fisheries. These strategies are mapped on a controllability matrix which explores the ability to guide a system's behaviour towards a desired state based on ecological responsiveness and societal receptivity to change. Understanding and improving the controllability of aquatic …

Formation Of Trihalomethanes During Chlorination At South Cross Bayou Advanced Water Reclamation Facility, Pinellas County, Florida, Ian Grabo
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
South Cross Bayou Advanced Water Reclamation Facility (SCB) in Pinellas County, Florida, recently had a spike in effluent concentrations of bromodichloromethane (BDCM) and dibromochloromethane (DBCM) above the regulated limits, due to relying fully on chlorination instead of a combination of chlorination and ultraviolet light. The objective of this study was to determine the operating parameters most strongly affecting the formation of THMs. This was completed by analysis of long-term data sets obtained from SCB by multiple linear regression to create models describing THM formation. In addition, sampling of the chlorine contact chamber (CCC) was done to determine the effects of …
Integrating History Into Healthcare: Understanding Links Between Past Traumas And Current Health Disparities Within The Native American Population, Alison A. Gisi
Honors Thesis
The byproducts and motivators of colonialism- namely acquisition of land, pursuit of power, and assimilation of non-dominant cultures- have created a long legacy of historical trauma within the American Indigenous population, who have been at the targets of discrimination and conflict since the onset of European colonization of the Americas. Generations of losses have victimized Native American people and has left them to pick up the pieces of what they lost to colonialism. Researchers and experts in the field have suggested that due to the extensive and unique Historical Trauma experienced by the population has initiated the Historical Trauma Response …

Although emotional labor—defined as the process(es) by which a worker manages their feelings in order to produce the desired emotional response in a customer—has been studied in various fields and specific domains of librarianship, this topic has yet to be examined in school librarianship. In this exploratory article, I perform a close reading of school librarian job postings to surface expectations of emotional labor and explicate connections to the feminized history of librarianship. The article closes with a call to action, outlining steps for administrators and researchers to prevent the potential harms of emotional labor in school librarianship.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is defined by amyloid (A) and tau (T) pathologies, with T better correlated to neurodegeneration (N). However, T and N have complex regional relationships in part related to non-AD factors that influence N. With machine learning, we assessed heterogeneity in 18F-flortaucipir vs. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography as markers of T and neuronal hypometabolism (NM) in 289 symptomatic patients from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative. We identified six T/NM clusters with differing limbic and cortical patterns. The canonical group was defined as the T/NM pattern with lowest regression residuals. Groups resilient to …

Recognition of mammalian mitochondrial promoters requires the concerted action of mitochondrial RNA polymerase (mtRNAP) and transcription initiation factors TFAM and TFB2M. In this work, we found that transcript slippage results in heterogeneity of the human mitochondrial transcripts in vivo and in vitro. This allowed us to correctly interpret the RNAseq data, identify the bona fide transcription start sites (TSS), and assign mitochondrial promoters for > 50% of mammalian species and some other vertebrates. The divergent structure of the mammalian promoters reveals previously unappreciated aspects of mtDNA evolution. The correct assignment of TSS also enabled us to establish the precise register of …

Mitochondrial fusion is essential to mitochondrial fitness and cellular health. Neurons of patients with genetic neurodegenerative diseases often exhibit mitochondrial fragmentation, reflecting an imbalance in mitochondrial fusion and fission (mitochondrial dysdynamism). Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease type 2A is the prototypical disorder of impaired mitochondrial fusion caused by mutations in the fusion protein mitofusin (MFN)2. Yet, cultured CMT2A patient fibroblast mitochondria are often reported as morphologically normal. Metabolic stress might evoke pathological mitochondrial phenotypes in cultured patient fibroblasts, providing a platform for the pre-clinical individualized evaluation of investigational therapeutics. Here, substitution of galactose for glucose in culture media was used to redirect …
