An Internet Of Medical Things (Iomt) Approach For Remote Assessment Of Head And Neck Cancer Patients, Ruchitha Chinthala
An Internet Of Medical Things (Iomt) Approach For Remote Assessment Of Head And Neck Cancer Patients, Ruchitha Chinthala
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Internet-of-Medical-Things (IoMT) allows for a smart healthcare system to remotely monitor and assess patient’s progress at home. Head and neck cancers (HNC) are treated with various treatment options which are associated with significant side effects, mainly shoulder dysfunction, and trismus (spasm of jaw muscles). However, measurement of patient’s progress, and side effects while undergoing treatment, is limited to evaluation received based on scheduled appointments. Development of strategies to enhance monitoring during follow-up period is needed for earlier identification of problems such as trismus and shoulder dysfunction. In this interdisciplinary research, for the first time, we develop an IoMT enabling application, …

The use of easily accessible peripheral samples, such as blood or saliva, to investigate neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders is well-established in genetic and epigenetic research, but the pathological implications of such biomarkers are not easily discerned. To better understand the relationship between peripheral blood- and brain-based epigenetic activity, we conducted a pilot study on captive baboons (Papio hamadryas) to investigate correlations between miRNA expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and 14 different cortical and subcortical brain regions, represented by two study groups comprised of 4 and 6 animals. Using next-generation sequencing, we identified 362 miRNAs expressed at …

Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) is a toxin produced by cyanobacteria that can bloom in freshwater supplies. This study describes a new strategy for remediation of MC-LR that combines linearization of the toxin using microcystinase A, MlrA, enzyme with rejection of linearized byproducts using membrane filtration. The MlrA enzyme was expressed in Escherichia coli (E. coli) and purified via a His-tag with 95% purity. Additionally, composite membranes made of 95% polysulfone and 5% sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) were fabricated and used to filter a solution containing cyclic and linearized MC-LR. Tests were also performed to measure the adsorption and desorption of MC-LR …

Autonomous Design Of New Chemical Reactions Using A Variational Autoencoder, Terence Musho, Robert Tempke
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Artificial intelligence based chemistry models are a promising method of exploring chemical reaction design spaces. However, training datasets based on experimental synthesis are typically reported only for the optimal synthesis reactions. This leads to an inherited bias in the model predictions. Therefore, robust datasets that span the entirety of the solution space are necessary to remove inherited bias and permit complete training of the space. In this study, an artificial intelligence model based on a Variational AutoEncoder (VAE) has been developed and investigated to synthetically generate continuous datasets. The approach involves sampling the latent space to generate new chemical reactions. …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Globally marine-terrestrial interfaces are highly impacted due to a range of human pressures. Seagrass habitats exist in the shallow marine waters of this interface, have significant values and are impacted by a range of pressures. Cumulative risk analysis is widely used to identify risk from multiple threats and assist in prioritizing management actions. This study conducted a cumulative risk analysis of seagrass habitat associated with the Australian continent to support management actions. We developed a spatially explicit risk model based on a database of threats to coastal aquatic habitat in Australia, spanning 35,000 km of coastline. Risk hotspots were identified …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Clostridioides difficile PCR ribotype (RT) 017 ranks among the most successful strains of C. difficile in the world. In the past three decades, it has caused outbreaks on four continents, more than other ‘epidemic’ strains, but our understanding of the genomic epidemiology underpinning the spread of C. difficile RT 017 is limited. Here, we performed high-resolution phylogenomic and Bayesian evolutionary analyses on an updated and more representative dataset of 282 non-clonal C. difficile RT 017 isolates collected worldwide between 1981 and 2019. These analyses place an estimated time of global dissemination between 1953 and 1983 and identified the acquisition of …

The offshore wind energy sector has rapidly expanded over the past two decades, providing a renewable energy solution for coastal nations. Sector development has been led in Europe, but is growing globally. Most developments to date have been in well-mixed, i.e., unstratified, shallow-waters near to shore. Sector growth is, for the first time, pushing developments to deep water, into a brand new environment: seasonally stratified shelf seas. Seasonally stratified shelf seas, where water density varies with depth, have a disproportionately key role in primary production, marine ecosystem and biogeochemical cycling. Infrastructure will directly mix stratified shelf seas. The magnitude of …

NF-κB has been reported to both promote and inhibit bone formation. To explore its role in osteolineage cells, we conditionally deleted IKKα, an upstream kinase required for non-canonical NF-κB activation, using Osterix (Osx)-Cre. Surprisingly, we found no effect on either cancellous or cortical bone, even following mechanical loading. However, we noted that IKKα conditional knockout (cKO) mice began to lose body weight after 6 months of age with severe reductions in fat mass and lower adipocyte size in geriatric animals. qPCR analysis of adipogenic markers in fat pads of cKO mice indicated no difference in early differentiation, but instead markedly …

Global warming is causing an unprecedented loss of species and habitats worldwide. This is particularly apparent for tropical coral reefs, with an increasing number of reefs experiencing mass bleaching and mortality on an annual basis. As such, there is a growing need for a standardized experimental approach to rapidly assess the thermal limits of corals and predict the survival of coral species across reefs and regions. Using a portable experimental system, the Coral Bleaching Automated Stress System (CBASS), we conducted standardized 18 h acute thermal stress assays to quantitively determine the upper thermal limits of four coral species across the …

Phenotypic Disruption Of Cuticular Hydrocarbon Production In Hybrids Between Sympatric Species Of Hawaiian Picture-Wing Drosophila, Thomas J. Fezza, Matthew S. Siderhurst, Eric B. Jang, Elizabeth A. Stacy, Donald K. Price
Life Sciences Faculty Research
Interspecies hybrids can express phenotypic traits far outside the range of parental species. The atypical traits of hybrids provide insight into differences in the factors that regulate the expression of these traits in the parental species. In some cases, the unusual phenotypic traits of hybrids can lead to phenotypic dysfunction with hybrids experiencing reduced survival or reproduction. Cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) in insects are important phenotypic traits that serve several functions, including desiccation resistance and pheromones for mating. We used gas chromatography mass spectrometry to investigate the differences in CHC production between two closely related sympatric Hawaiian picture-wing Drosophila species, Drosophila …

Suicide And Homicide More Common With Limited Urban Tree Canopy Cover, Thomas V L El-Mallakh, Scott Hedges, Jayesh P. Rai, Aruni Bhatnagar, Sarah Moyer, Rif S. El-Mallakh
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Distribution of urban tree canopies is generally not uniform. Multiple variables have been shown to be associated with tree canopy cover, including violence, health, and general well-being. Herein we examine the relationship of tree cover with intentional deaths. Suicide, homicide, and tree cover data were examined by ZIP code for Louisville, a mid-sized city in Kentucky. Relationship between intentional death (suicide and homicide) and tree cover was examined with Poisson regression analysis. In both univariate and multivariate models, suicides (P < 0.0001 and P = 0.0005), homicides (P < 0.0001 and P = 0.03), and combination (P = 0.0541) were negatively associated with …

High-severity wildfires are becoming increasingly common across the American Southwest, and knowledge of how these fires affect native organisms is essential for their conservation. We evaluated changes in fish densities and habitat over 7 and 23 years in 2 tributaries of the Gila River, New Mexico, that experienced large wildfires. The Miller Fire affected Little Creek in 2011 and was followed by moderate monsoonal flooding. The Silver Fire affected Black Canyon in 2013 and was followed by a large monsoonal flood. These 2 headwater streams responded differently to wildfire. Influx of sediments reduced stream depth by 59% and increased fine …

Fabrication Of Porous Spherical Beads From Corn Starch By Using A 3d Food Printing System, Safoura Ahmadzadeh, Ali Ubeyitogullari
Food Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study introduces a 3D food printing approach to fabricate spherical starch beads with small sizes and high porosity for the first time. The results illustrated that 3D food printing could generate starch beads in different sizes depending on the nozzle diameter, printing pressure, and ink viscosity. The 3D-printed beads were characterized for their morphology, crystallinity, and textural properties, while the starch-based ink was analyzed for its rheological properties. A suitable printing was attained when viscosity was in the range of 1000–1200 Pa.s at a low shear rate (˂0.1 s−1). Among the starch concentrations (10–15%, w/w) investigated, 15% starch concentration …
