Neurotypes: Do Ocd, Adhd, And Autism Play A Role In Life Satisfaction?, Morgan Mcleod Evans
Neurotypes: Do Ocd, Adhd, And Autism Play A Role In Life Satisfaction?, Morgan Mcleod Evans
Honors Theses
OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), and ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) are neurotypes that impact every aspect of life, including daily activities and socialization, which is why they have been shown in prior studies to negatively impact life satisfaction. This study compared the levels of life satisfaction now and before the COVID-19 pandemic in young adults (n = 324) with typical neurotypes, those with only ASD (autism), with only OCD, with only ADHD, with two of the neurotypes, and with all three neurotypes. Contrary to predictions from prior research, life satisfaction did not decrease after the onset …

Beyond The Classroom: Building Professional Skills With The Flyaway Mural, Augusta Gaston
Honors Theses
In April of 2022, I completed a collaborative mural at Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Reflection Riding hosts a radio antenna connected to the Motus Wildlife Tracking System, which studies animal migration routes through North, Central, and South America. Working collaboratively with artists Rondell Crier, Tyus Allen, and Professor Derek Witucki, we designed and installed a mural that would communicate the Motus research to their visitors in the absence of a Reflection Riding employee. The project was funded by various grants awarded by ArtsBuild and The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and organized by budgets that …

Driving-Decision Making Of Autonomous Vehicle According To Queensland Overtaking Traffic Rules, Hanif Bhuiyan, Guido Governatori, Avishkar Mahajan, Andry Rakotonirainy, Meng Weng (Huang Mingrong) Wong
Centre for Computational Law (2022-2025)
Making a driving decision according to traffic rules is a challenging task for improving the safety of Autonomous Vehicles (AVs). Traffic rules often contain open texture expressions and exceptions, which makes it hard for AVs to follow them. This paper introduces a Defeasible Deontic Logic (DDL) baseddriving decision-making methodology for AVs. We use DDL to formalize traffic rules and facilitate automated reasoning. DDL is used to effectively handle rule exceptions and resolve open texture expressions in rules. Furthermore, we supplement the information provided by the traffic rules by an ontology for AV driving behaviour and environment information. This methodology performs …

Traffic Rule Formalization For Autonomous Vehicle, Hanif Bhuiyan, Guido Governatori, Andry Rakotonirainy, Meng Weng Wong, Avishkar Mahajan
Centre for Computational Law (2022-2025)
This study devised and implemented a Defeasible Deontic Logic (DDL)-based formalization approach for translating traffic rules into a machine-computable (M/C) format and thus solving rule issues: rule vagueness (open texture expressions) and exceptions in rules. The resulting M/C format of traffic rules can be utilized for automatic traffic rule reasoning to assist the Autonomous Vehicle (AV) in making legal decisions. The method incorporates the components and behaviour of regulations based on the rule's obligation, prohibition, and permission activities.
The need for the encoding methodology is motivated by the desire for automated reasoning over Autonomous Vehicle information involving traffic rules.

Examining The Effects Of Npra Antagonist Anantin On Sci-Induced Ployuria., Lindsey Zipperer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Polyuria, or the over production of urine, is a prevalent condition that significantly impacts the quality of life in individuals suffering from a spinal cord injury (SCI). Post-SCI induced polyuria is thought to have been associated with altered levels of vasopressin (AVP), atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), and natriuretic peptide receptor A (NPRA). In the present study, the function of NPRA was analyzed in the rat contusion model using anantin, an NPRA antagonist. A daily dose of either 100 µg of anantin or vehicle was administered intraperitoneally immediately following the SCI surgery and continued until termination, 4 weeks post injury (wpi). …

Hgf-Mediated C-Met Signaling In Human Corneal Epithelial Cells., Kate Tarvestad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Vision is often regarded as the primary sense of humans. The cornea is the main refractive tissue that permits light through to the retina, allowing a clear image. When the cornea sustains damage, it opens a pathway for infection and blindness through fibrotic processes. Healing the corneal tissue is critical for vision restoration and pain alleviation. Growth factors and their cognate receptors are currently under investigation as tools to restore proper corneal physiology. We hypothesize that manipulating the hepatocyte growth factor (HGF)/ c-Met signaling pathway is one route to promote quality corneal healing. This thesis investigates the signaling, trafficking, and …

The Monster Theory Of Relativity: Triggering Supernatural Monsters, Maggie Mercil
The Monster Theory Of Relativity: Triggering Supernatural Monsters, Maggie Mercil
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Current monster scholarship examines monstrous bodies, how they represent our cultural fears, anxieties, or forbidden desires, and how monsters can guard, break, or blur the boundaries between us and Other. While examining the monsters themselves can provide a better understanding of ourselves and our culture, it is just as important to consider the conditions in which these monsters were able to manifest in the first place. This paper argues that it is through our own actions, whether intentional or not, that we effectively “trigger” the monsters into our narratives. There are three categories of “triggers” that this paper will explore: …
The Impacts Of A Quagga And Zebra Mussel Infestation, Casey Silva
The Impacts Of A Quagga And Zebra Mussel Infestation, Casey Silva
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Invasive species issues have been on the rise in the United States for decades. These organisms can disrupt the natural flow of an ecosystem and overtake native species, altering an environment as a whole. The introduction of the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) in 1988, followed by the quagga mussel (Dreissena rostriformis) in 1989 is arguably the most prolific aquatic infestation the nation is currently up against (Hoddle, 2022). Beginning in the Great Lakes, both quagga and zebra mussels quickly spread their infestations through the Midwest and the East coast. The potential invasion of these species across …

(R2023) Analysis Of The Auto-Oscillation Of A Perturbed Sir Epidemiological Model, Seyive J. Degbo, Guy A. Degla
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we study a class of compatimental epidemiological models consisting of Susceptible, Infected, and Removed (SIR) individuals with a perturbation factor or exterior effects such as noise, climate change, pollution, etc. We prove the existence and uniqueness of a limit cycle confined in a nonempty closed and convex set by relying on a recent result of Lobanova and Sadovskii. Moreover, we study the existence of Hopf and Bogdanov-Takens bifurcations by applying respectively Poincare-Andronov-Hopf bifurcation theorem and Bogdanov-Takens theorem. Eventually, using Scilab, we illustrate the validity of our results with numerical simulations and also interpret them.

(R1992) Rbf-Ps Method For Eventual Periodicity Of Generalized Kawahara Equation, Hameed Ullah Jan, Marjan Uddin, Arif Ullah, Naseeb Ullah
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In engineering and mathematical physics, nonlinear evolutionary equations play an important role. Kawahara equation is one of the famous nonlinear evolution equation appeared in the theories of shallow water waves possessing surface tension, capillary-gravity waves and also magneto-acoustic waves in a plasma. Another specific subjective parts of arrangements for some of evolution equations evidenced by findings link belonging to their long-term actions named as eventual time periodicity discovered over solutions to IBVPs (initial-boundary-value problems). Here we investigate the solution’s eventual periodicity for generalized fifth order Kawahara equation (IBVP) on bounded domain in combination with periodic boundary conditions numerically exploiting mesh-free …

The Role Of The Filifactor Alocis Hypothetical Protein Fa1654 In Oxidative Stress Resistance, Malissa Makaylia Mangar
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The survival/adaptation of Fillifactor alocis, a fastidious gram positive asaccharolytic anaerobe in the inflammatory environment of the periodontal pocket, requires an ability to overcome oxidative stress. Moreover, emerging observations suggest its pathogenic characteristics are highlighted by its capacity to survive in the oxidative-stress microenvironment of the periodontal pocket and its likely ability to modulate the microbial community dynamics. There is still a significant gap in our understanding of F. alocis mechanism of oxidative stress resistance and its impact on the virulence and pathogenicity of the microbial biofilm. The pathogenicity of F. alocis may be impacted by its response to oxidative …
A Geographic Segmentation Approach For Satellite-Derived Bathymetry, Juliane Jussara Affonso
A Geographic Segmentation Approach For Satellite-Derived Bathymetry, Juliane Jussara Affonso
Master's Theses and Capstones
Safety of navigation depends on our knowledge of seabed and its features, and, as such, any improvements in deriving bathymetry for nautical chart updating are of major importance. Satellite-Derived Bathymetry (SDB) is an alternative to traditional surveys using ship and airborne sensors, particularly for mapping remote and shallow areas, due to its reduced cost and the absence of navigational risks in very shallow and unsurveyed areas. However, the accuracy of SDB can be judged as relatively low for nautical charting purposes and, therefore, is mostly used for reconnaissance or/and for filling gaps in remote or very shallow areas. One of …
Spatiotemporal Patterns Of Dissolved Organic Nutrient Lability Across The Subtropical North Pacific, Jessica Quinn Gray
Spatiotemporal Patterns Of Dissolved Organic Nutrient Lability Across The Subtropical North Pacific, Jessica Quinn Gray
Master's Theses and Capstones
Net biologically produced organic matter integrated over an annual cycle in the euphotic zone of the global ocean is equal to annual net community production (ANCP). ANCP is limited by the rate of delivery of essential nutrients (nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and iron (Fe)) to the sunlit surface ocean and the efficiency with which these nutrients are either metabolized or returned to the ocean’s interior. In subtropical oceans, which are regions of large-scale downwelling and consequently characteristic of nutrient-depleted surface waters, ANCP remains comparable to more nutrient replete ecosystems (~2 – 5 mol C m-2 yr-1). To understand what may …
Med12 Is A Critical Regulator Of Neural Crest Lineage And Nervous System Myelination, Fatma Betul Aksoy Yasar
Med12 Is A Critical Regulator Of Neural Crest Lineage And Nervous System Myelination, Fatma Betul Aksoy Yasar
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
The Mediator complex (MED) is a multi-subunit protein complex integral to the eukaryotic transcription machinery. MED12 is a Cdk8- regulatory kinase module subunit directly implicated in human disease and is genetically altered in neurological disease and cancer. Numerous attempts at generating an in vivo system to study the role of Med12 failed due to embryonic lethality associated with germline or developmental disruption of Med12 gene. To understand the cellular and molecular processes associated with its role in disease, we generated multiple mouse models with targeted depletion of MED12 in distinct cellular lineages. Our genetically engineered models with induced and conditional …

Trading Pain For Gain: Addressing Misaligned Interests In Prescription Drug Benefit Administration, Sheva J. Sanders, Jessica C. Wheeler
Trading Pain For Gain: Addressing Misaligned Interests In Prescription Drug Benefit Administration, Sheva J. Sanders, Jessica C. Wheeler
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Over the last two decades, Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs), organizations that act as middlemen between health plans and drug manufacturers, have become increasingly powerful players in the healthcare industry. PBMs promise to leverage their expertise and ability to aggregate buying power to negotiate lower drug prices and administer prescription drug benefit plans. In practice, however, PBMs are widely criticized for benefitting from, and contributing to, inefficiencies in the prescription drug market, particularly by imposing restrictions on beneficiary access to drugs in exchange for rebates paid to PBMs by manufacturers. To the extent that the rebates are retained by PBMs, or …

Growth And Mortality Of American Oysters (Crassostrea Virginica) For Several Years In The Mississippi Sound – Effects Of Freshwater Influence, Taylor Slade
Honors Theses
The American oyster, Crassostrea virginica, is a filter feeding bivalve native to the Gulf of Mexico, and an essential part of the Mississippi Sound estuarine ecosystem. In recent years, influx of freshwater into the Mississippi Sound as a result of frequent rainfall events has altered the water chemistry in several ways that are detrimental to the oyster populations. In this thesis, I examine the growth rate of C. virginica over the last five years in association with salinity fluctuations in the Mississippi Sound. Given diminishing populations and limited recruitment, researchers have facilitated citizen-scientist managed oyster gardens along the coast …
Using Reinforcement Learning To Improve Network Reliability Through Optimal Resource Allocation, Henley Wells
Using Reinforcement Learning To Improve Network Reliability Through Optimal Resource Allocation, Henley Wells
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Networks provide a variety of critical services to society (e.g. power grid, telecommunication, water, transportation) but are prone to disruption. With this motivation, we study a sequential decision problem in which an initial network is improved over time (e.g., by adding or increasing the reliability of edges) and rewards are gained over time as a function of the network’s all-terminal reliability. The actions during each time period are limited due to availability of resources such as time, money, or labor. To solve this problem, we utilized a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) approach implemented within OpenAI-Gym using Stable Baselines. A Proximal …
