Quantifying The Toxicological Effects Of The Organic Uv Filters Avobenzone And Homosalate On Acropora Cervicornis, Samantha F. Buckley
Quantifying The Toxicological Effects Of The Organic Uv Filters Avobenzone And Homosalate On Acropora Cervicornis, Samantha F. Buckley
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Reports of the environmental effects of organic UV filters such as oxybenzone have led to the marketing of “reef-safe” sunscreen ingredients, including avobenzone and homosalate. Avobenzone provides broad-spectrum UV protection which blocks higher wavelength UV rays, the leading cause of aging and skin cancer. However, as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organic UV filters have similar structures to crude oil and estrogens, some of which have been labeled endocrine disrupters. Common in personal care products, UV filters enter marine ecosystems via wastewater effluent and swimmers. Significant stress and mortality have been observed in juvenile and some adult scleractinian corals after exposure …
Sourcing The Sacred: Application Of Reflectance Spectroscopy And Linear Morphometrics To Hopewell Mortuary Chert Discs, Brian Rowe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
ABSTRACT: Despite being one of the most intensively-studied culture phenomena of precontact North America, Hopewell peoples and their communities remain largely enigmatic outside of ceremonial earthwork sites. This research aims to examine Ohio Hopewell community by proxy of the large cache of chert bifaces disinterred from Mound 2, located at the Hopewell Mound Group (33RO27) in Ross County, Ohio. Numbering approximately 8,600 bifaces, these artifacts exhibit broadly similar macroscopic traits, and have been attributed in past archaeological literature as coming from a single source in Indiana. This research hypothesizes that this attribution is erroneous, and that the interaction of geographically …

The Influence Of Self- And Other-Oriented Persuasive Messages On The Intention To Engage In Health-Oriented Behavior Change, Kierstynn Arielle Hunter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Although there is research investigating the influence of self- and other-oriented persuasive messages on health-oriented behavior change, little exists on the influence of these messages on mask-wearing behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, much of the research on persuasive health messages uses advertisements and other textual presentations of these persuasive messages, and little research exists on vocal presentations. This study examined how the vocal presentation of these self- and other-oriented persuasive messages can influence an individual’s self-reported likelihood of engaging in mask-wearing. Analyses showed that hearing a self-oriented persuasive message led participants to give reasons to wear a mask that …
Dopaminergic Modulation Of Discounting Of Delayed Punishment, Grace L. Minnes
Dopaminergic Modulation Of Discounting Of Delayed Punishment, Grace L. Minnes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Effective decision-making involves careful consideration of all potential positive and negative outcomes. Importantly, negative outcomes often occur later in time, leading to underestimation, or “discounting,” of these consequences. The Delayed Punishment Decision-making Task (DPDT) was developed to study sensitivity to delayed vs immediate punishment during cost/benefit decision-making in rats. Rats choose between two levers, one resulting in a small, single-pellet reward with no foot shock punishment, and the other resulting in a larger, three-pellet reward followed by a mild foot shock punishment. This punishment is preceded by a systematically increasing delay as the blocks progress (0, 4, 8, 12, 16 …
Evaluating Executive Functions In A Proposed Animal Model Of Adhd: Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats, Joshua Lee Potter
Evaluating Executive Functions In A Proposed Animal Model Of Adhd: Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats, Joshua Lee Potter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Evaluating animal models of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is crucial for expanding the breadth of knowledge of the disorder. Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats (SHRs) have been used for several years as an animal model of ADHD, and routinely provide new information about aspects of the disorder that contribute to behavioral and pharmaceutical treatment interventions. Twelve male and 12 female SHRs as well as 12 male and 12 female Wistar-Kyoto rats (i.e., control strain for the SHR) were acquired and tested on a series of operant tests starting postnatal day (PND) 70. These tests consisted of measures of motor and executive function …

Toxicity And Effectiveness Of A New Two-Part Underwater Adhesive For Coral Restoration, Matthew Rojano
Toxicity And Effectiveness Of A New Two-Part Underwater Adhesive For Coral Restoration, Matthew Rojano
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
As coral cover decreases around the world due to disease, bleaching events, and anthropogenic effects, coral restoration projects become increasingly important. A crucial part of many coral restoration projects is the attachment of corals to substrates in nurseries or reef substrates during outplanting. The effective anchoring of transplants is a critical phase in coral restoration and the adhesive used for attachment is crucial. Commonly used adhesives have several drawbacks: there are long mixing times, low substrate adhesion, and lengthy hardening times. To address these issues and provide an effective alternative for coral restoration activities, a new two-part Mixed Adhesive was …

Overexpression Of Sox18 Increased Cell Proliferation, Migration And Colony Formation In Pediatric Sarcomas, Jack E. Ojile
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
Cancer has become one of the leading causes for premature deaths and continues to increase in rank across the world. An estimated 19.3 million new cases of cancer were reported in 2020 and 10 million cancer related deaths occurred worldwide. Ewing sarcoma and Rhabdomyosarcoma are two pediatric cancers that have not made significant improvements to patient survival for a metastatic diagnosis and the current chemotherapy regiment can cause several undesirable side effects immediately after treatment or later in life. SOX18 has been observed to play some role in various tumorigenic properties like proliferation, invasion, and resisting cell death signals in …

The Farriers’ Perspective Of Ergonomics, Hailey Harrington, Gwen Morris
Fall 2022 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Farriers, or individuals who specialize in the shoeing of horses, navigate a variety of ergonomic challenges. Such challenges have the potential to severely impact their working ability and other major areas of their lives. Early research from Holler (1984) and King (2003) investigated farrier perceptions of hazardous job requirements and tool hazards in relations to strain on their bodies. Additional factors to consider include other external factors such as human and animal interactions, physiological, and psychological factors (Flunker et al., 2020; Gombeski et al., 2017).The purpose of this study is to learn about the ergonomic conditions of farriers and their …
Standardization Of A Latent Blood Visualizer Based Upon Dna Degradation, Kailey M. Van 'T Hoff
Standardization Of A Latent Blood Visualizer Based Upon Dna Degradation, Kailey M. Van 'T Hoff
Honors Projects
Latent blood visualizers have been used in forensic science since 1937 beginning with Luminol. These visualizers through different types of reactions react with trace amounts of blood that cannot be seen with the naked human eye. These different reactions produce color that can then be seen by examiners. The four types of latent blood visualizers that were compared is luminol, leuco crystal violet, fluorescein, and bluestar. Luminol and bluestar use chemiluminescence, fluorescein uses florescent, and leuco crystal violet uses oxidation to react with iron in hemoglobin. At crime scenes when blood is detected which includes with the blood visualizers the …
Electrostatic Behavior Of Dielectric Elastomer Actuators With Discrete Electrodes, Adam Foster
Electrostatic Behavior Of Dielectric Elastomer Actuators With Discrete Electrodes, Adam Foster
Theses
Over the past couple of years, the field of soft robotics has seen tremendous expansion. As humans are looking towards a more collaborative, symbiotic relationship robots, actuators that are compliant and that do not employ a rigid frame are essential. One type of actuator that is currently being proposed is the Dielectric Elastomer Actuator (DEA), which use Coulomb force of attraction between two electrodes to generate motion. DEAs are often referred to as artificial biological muscle because they share many of the properties of biological muscle (high energy density, compliance, natural damper). However, they do have some severe limitations that …

BACKGROUND: Ovarian clear cell carcinoma (OCCC) accounts for approximately 8-10% of epithelial ovarian cancers in the United States. Although it is rare, OCCC usually presents with treatment challenges and the overall prognosis is far worse than high grade serous ovarian cancer HGSOC. The objective of this study was to examine the therapeutic relevance of combining oncolytic virus with cisplatin for ovarian cancer clear cell carcinoma (OCCC).
RESULTS: We identified that TMEM205, a recently discovered transmembrane protein, contributes to chemoresistance in OCCC cells via the exosomal pathway. Mechanistically, TMEM205 undergoes ligand-independent constitutive endocytosis and co-localizes with Rab11 to contribute to the …

Background: A critical unmet medical need in clinical management of colorectal cancer (CRC) pivots around lack of noninvasive and or minimally invasive techniques for early diagnosis and prognostic prediction of clinical outcomes. Because DNA methylation can capture the regulatory landscape of tumors and can be measured in body fluids, it provides unparalleled opportunities for the discovery of early diagnostic and prognostics markers predictive of clinical outcomes. Here we investigated use of DNA methylation for the discovery of potential clinically actionable diagnostic and prognostic markers for predicting survival in CRC. Methods: We analyzed DNA methylation patterns between tumor and control samples …
Screening Anti-Pd-L2 Peptides As Antitumor Ligands Using Phage Display, Chien Tran Phuoc
Screening Anti-Pd-L2 Peptides As Antitumor Ligands Using Phage Display, Chien Tran Phuoc
Honors Projects
Cancer still remains one of the top leading causes of death in America. Recently, programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) blockades have been demonstrated to be highly effective against various types of cancer. By blocking PD-1 from binding with their ligands (PD-L1 and PD-L2), the “off” signal to the immune system is inhibited, hence reinvigorating the immune cells to kill tumor cells. To date, despite PD-L1 and PD-L2 both interacting with PD-1, research efforts have only been focused on developing anti-PD-L1 inhibitors. Therefore, the work of this honor project has focused on finding anti-PD-L2 peptides by phage display, with the …
Winter Territoriality Of The American Redstart In Oil Palm Plantations, Samuel L. Oliveira, David J. Flaspohler, Jared D. Wolfe
Winter Territoriality Of The American Redstart In Oil Palm Plantations, Samuel L. Oliveira, David J. Flaspohler, Jared D. Wolfe
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Aspects of territorial behavior of Nearctic-neotropical migratory birds during the nonbreeding period are poorly studied. Information about territoriality, site persistence, between-year site fidelity, and territory sizes are not available for most birds, especially in tropical agroecosystems. Given the rapid expansion of oil palm in the neotropics, determining how oil palm affects the territorial behaviors of overwintering migratory birds is an important line of inquiry with conservation implications. The American Redstart (Setophaga ruticilla) is considered a model species for the study of population dynamics in the neotropics; however, territory size for American Redstart has only been assessed in native habitats. In …

Managing soils to retain new plant inputs is key to moving toward a sustainable and regenerative agriculture. Management practices, like diversifying and perennializing agroecosystems, may affect the decomposer organisms that regulate how new residue is converted to persistent soil organic matter. Here we tested whether 12 years of diversifying/perennializing plants in agroecosystems through extended rotations or grassland restoration would decrease losses of new plant residue inputs and, thus, increase retention of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in soil. We tracked dual-labeled (13C and 15N), isotopically enriched wheat (Triticum aestivum) residue in situ for 2 years as it decomposed in three …
Cross-Cultural Adaptation And Validation Of Lung Cancer Screening Health Belief Scale, Fang Lei
Cross-Cultural Adaptation And Validation Of Lung Cancer Screening Health Belief Scale, Fang Lei
Dissertations
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death and the third prevalent disease among Chinese Americans. Lung cancer screening with low dose computed tomography is an effective method to detect lung cancer. Compared to chest X-ray, low dose computed tomography can reduce the mortality rate of lung cancer by 20% in the high-risk smokers. Since 2013, lung cancer screening has been recommended by most health organizations and covered both by private and public insurances. However, the uptake rate of lung cancer screening is still low in the US, and there are few studies on lung cancer screening among Chinese …
How South Asian Activists Queer The Model Minority Myth: A Critical Oral History Project, Noorie Baig
How South Asian Activists Queer The Model Minority Myth: A Critical Oral History Project, Noorie Baig
Communication ETDs
The model minority myth (MMM) is predicated on stereotypical perceptions of Asian Americans as subservient high-achievers who comply with the ideologies of meritocracy, whiteness, and capitalism. However, South Asian American (SAA) activists and community organisers, the focus of this study, are working to confront and abolish racist, heterosexist, and other exclusionary injustices, policies, and practices. This dissertation seeks to understand the historical influences of the MMM, the challenges SAA activists and organisers face, and the communication strategies they use to negotiate the MMM through their activism. Oral history methods and critical thematic analysis are used to elicit and analyse personal …

Tobacco and alcohol use are heritable behaviours associated with 15% and 5.3% of worldwide deaths, respectively, due largely to broad increased risk for disease and injury1,2,3,4. These substances are used across the globe, yet genome-wide association studies have focused largely on individuals of European ancestries5. Here we leveraged global genetic diversity across 3.4 million individuals from four major clines of global ancestry (approximately 21% non-European) to power the discovery and fine-mapping of genomic loci associated with tobacco and alcohol use, to inform function of these loci via ancestry-aware transcriptome-wide association …

We examine the 4 recognized varieties of Penstemon scariosus that constitute a complex of related taxa that share overlapping morphological characters: namely varieties albifluvis, cyanomontanus, garrettii, and scariosus. Modern taxonomic descriptions and associated keys are not in complete agreement on how to clearly delineate these varieties. It is particularly important to understand the taxonomic circumscription of variety albifluvis, since it is being considered for listing under the Endangered Species Act. To address the taxonomic position of taxa in this species complex, we examine the genetic structure of 66 accessions of P. scariosus, representing the …

Penile Squamous Cell Carcinoma (PSCC) is associated with high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV). The immunohistochemical (IHC) test for p16INK4a (p16) is highly correlated with HR-HPV expression in other SCCs. To investigate whether the expression of p16 IHC or HR-HPV is associated with survival in PSCC, we conducted a single institution analysis of 143 patients with a diagnosis of PSCC and, available tissue were tested for p16 IHC staining patterns, histological subtype, tumor grade, and lymphovascular invasion (LVI) by an experienced pathologist. HR-HPV status using the Cobas PCR Assay or the RNAScope high-risk HPV in situ hybridization kit were also assessed. Patient …
