Herstory& Female Identity: Postmodern Feminist Revision Of Female Characters In Islamic Narrative In Mohja Kahf’S Hagar Poems, Aya Elbably
Dentistry
Contending with the re-reading and re-writing of history that has always excluded women from its grand narratives, postmodern feminist writers have always sought to revise canonical texts from a gynocentric perspective. Through their revisionary fiction, they aimed at challenging the subordinate, marginal and invisible position of the women characters in these texts. In place of the alleged objectivity of these accounts, postmodern feminist revisionist writers transform these ancient tales while employing female insight to re-narrate the story of humanity, yet through women’s perspective. Thus, they create new texts to challenge the fundamental gender stereotypes, namely the binary images generated by …
Vegetative Phenologies Of Lianas And Trees In Two Neotropical Forests With Contrasting Rainfall Regimes, Jose A. Medina-Vega, S. Joseph Wright, Frans Bongers, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Frank J. Sterck
Vegetative Phenologies Of Lianas And Trees In Two Neotropical Forests With Contrasting Rainfall Regimes, Jose A. Medina-Vega, S. Joseph Wright, Frans Bongers, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Frank J. Sterck
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
- Among tropical forests, lianas are predicted to have a growth advantage over trees during seasonal drought, with substantial implications for tree and forest dynamics. We tested the hypotheses that lianas maintain higher water status than trees during seasonal drought and that lianas maximize leaf cover to match high, dry-season light conditions, while trees are more limited by moisture availability during the dry season.
- We monitored the seasonal dynamics of predawn and midday leaf water potentials and leaf phenology for branches of 16 liana and 16 tree species in the canopies of two lowland tropical forests with contrasting rainfall regimes in …

Recycled Concrete Aggregates Are An Economic Form Of Urban Riparian Erosion Management With Limited Impacts On Freshwater Chemistry And Microbial Diversity, Rachelle E. Beattie, Bixia Su, Rebecca Thill, Krassimira R. Hristova
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Urban streams are at high risk of riparian erosion which impacts adjacent infrastructure stability. Methods to prevent stream erosion have been proposed including using recycled concrete (RC) materials to help stabilize the streambed; however, little is known about the environmental and biological impacts of using RC in urban streams. RC, new concrete (NC), and river rock controls were evaluated for their impact on water chemistry, water quality, and microbial community composition over 6.5 months in controlled laboratory mesocosms. Concentrations of 19 metals, nutrients, and pH of mesocosms containing RC were not significantly different from the river rock mesocosm throughout the …

The Elimination Of Political Groups Under International Law And The Constitution Of Political Claims, Farid Samir Benavides-Vanegas
The Elimination Of Political Groups Under International Law And The Constitution Of Political Claims, Farid Samir Benavides-Vanegas
Florida Journal of International Law
In this Article I will show, first, that there are no grounds to hold that the elimination of political groups can be treated as political genocide under international law, and second, that under the doctrine developed in ICTY Prosecutor v. Dusko Tadic there is no need to appeal to that category to obtain the punishment of the perpetrators of crimes against political groups. Nevertheless, I will show that the conceptual structure of crimes against humanity—especially the requirement of being part of a massive of widespread attack—seems to make plausible the question of creating a crime of political genocide. By the …
The Laws Of War Waged Between Democratic States And Terrorist Organizations: Real Or Illusive?, Emanuel Gross
The Laws Of War Waged Between Democratic States And Terrorist Organizations: Real Or Illusive?, Emanuel Gross
Florida Journal of International Law
In this Article, we shall try to define this new kind of war. We shall analyze the rules of war in the modern age and examine whether these rules are also applicable in an unconventional war—a war on terror. This is a war with an enemy that does not observe the limits of violence and force; an enemy which aspires to realize its irrational ideology in an irrational way, showing total disregard for the value of human life, of either its own terrorist “soldiers” or, of course, of it enemies.
Modes Of Warfare And Evolving Standards Of Environmental Protection Under The International Law Of War, John Alan Cohan
Modes Of Warfare And Evolving Standards Of Environmental Protection Under The International Law Of War, John Alan Cohan
Florida Journal of International Law
This Article examines the current norms and standards that exist in international law that address environmental damage occurring in time of war. To understand the complexity of the problem, I first address the theoretical underpinning of environmental protection—comparing the anthropocentric view and the competing view that the environment ought to be protected because it has intrinsic value. These competing perspectives help fame the issue in the later examination of this Article of relevant international conventions pertaining to the environment in time of war. Next, this Article discusses the current laws of armed conflict, as military planners must inevitably weigh the …

Intervention In Iraq: Towards A Doctrine Of Anticipatory Counter-Terrorism, Counter-Proliferation Intervention, Christopher Clarke Posteraro
Florida Journal of International Law
This Article analyzes the international legal implications of the particular problem facing U.S. policymakers are they confront the threat posed by Iraqi support of international terrorism and its pursuit of weapons of mass destruction. In Part II, this Article examines the bloody legacy of the Hussein regime. Hussein’s disregard for the lives of his own citizens, exemplified by the genocide of Iraqi Kurds, his pursuit of weapons of mass destruction, and his support for international terrorism, are essential components to an understanding of why the United States can justifiably view his ouster as imperative. Part III examines the existing international …

Pills, Patents, And Power: State Creation Of Gray Markets As A Limit On Patent Rights, Shubha Ghosh
Florida Journal of International Law
The question, of course, is whether allowing gray markets for pharmaceuticals is effective. I address this question in this Article and conclude that while the gray market solution is appropriate in South Africa, its effectiveness, as proposed, is questionable in the United States. While ideally it would be more appropriate to address the problems directly as human rights matters, the solution of creating gray markets may be the most effective within the constraints of the current legal system. However, the gray market must be created in a suitable and rational fashion. I develop these points as follows. Part II presents …

When Does Crime Become A Threat To International Peace And Security?, Daniel Pickard
Florida Journal of International Law
This article focuses on questions concerning the consequences of international crime, not from a judicial perspective, but from a security viewpoint, that is, as a potential threat to international peace that could trigger the use of force by Member states of the United Nations. This is to distinguish from judicial issues raised by the proposed permanent International Criminal Court (I.C.C.). This article examines concepts connected with the right, under international law, of one or more nations to use military force within the territorial boundaries of another sovereign state. The author uses as illustrative examples the factual scenarios of organized crime, …

Investigating The Proper Use Of Litani River Basin Based On Water Quality, Mohamad Diab, Mohamad Soliman
BAU Journal - Science and Technology
Litani River Basin (LRB) with a 170km length and annual river flow of 750 MCM is considered the most important water resource in Lebanon. Unfortunately, the river is facing water contamination as a result of human practices. Water Quality assessments was performed in the Litani River Basin using a combination of Principal Component Analysis method (PCA) and Water Quality Index method (WQI). Results revealed the improvement of the water quality significantly after passing lake Qaraoun. Moreover, according to WQI, Lower LRB water is ranked ‘’Good’’ for irrigation and ‘’BAD’ for drinking purposes. Microbial contamination is found to be the key …

BAU Journal - Science and Technology
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) including Ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease, is a chronic condition of the intestine characterized by an uncontrolled inflammatory response. Current biologic treatments developed to treat IBD are expensive and associated with significant side effects; thus, alternative approaches are required. Recently, herbal concoctions have emerged as promising intervention. This study investigates the protective effects of Salvia fruticosa (SF) against acetic acid-induced colitis in mice, a model of human inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Mice were divided into four groups (n=3). IBD was induced with acetic acid (6%). SF was administered by gavage at 1.5ug/kg mimicking folk medicine. …

Sources Of Resonant Vortices In Aero-Acoustics Resonance From Tandem Flat Plates, Atef El Khatib, Ahmad Al Miaari, Ali Hammoud
BAU Journal - Science and Technology
Aero-acoustic resonance in flows around flat plates is a major design concern in various practical applications, especially turbomachinery and heat exchangers, due to its significant effects on fatigue rates and radiated noises intensity. Although research has been intensive on the topic, there is still a lot to be understood for effective resonance prediction and control. Resonance in tandem plate systems is characterized by a double response. This study, investigates for the first time, the flow mechanisms responsible for the generation of low-velocity and high-velocity resonances of the double resonance response. Experimental testing and numerical simulation showed that low-velocity resonance vortices …

Antibiotic accumulation in soil and plants is a rising problem in agriculture creating a serious threat to living organisms in the environment, hence needing huge attention. To this end, glasshouse pot experiments were conducted to simulate contamination by veterinary antibiotic at 150 mg kg-1 and 4800 mg kg-1 in a virgin soil in which lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.), chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), arugula (Eruca sativa Mill.) and cress (Lepidium sativum L.) were grown, aiming at evaluating the potential toxicity of antibiotic in plants roots during their growth period. Biomarkers of toxicity such as malondialdehyde and proline …
Mandating Early Neutral Evaluations: Efficient Or Excessive?, William J. Baker
Mandating Early Neutral Evaluations: Efficient Or Excessive?, William J. Baker
Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal
This paper explores whether mandating alternative dispute resolution (ADR), specifically in the form of early neutral evaluations (ENEs), actually improves efficiency in federal courts. This paper attempts to challenge and test the presumption that ADR inherently promotes efficiency in all civil cases. Part I introduces the reader to ENEs, ADR, their presence in federal courts, and efficiency’s role within this framework. Part II challenges the notion that ADR and efficiency are inherently linked, and asks whether mandating ENEs can prove if this inherent efficiency exists. Part III presents the legal theory that addresses this question, tending to support the notion …

Emicizumab-Kxwh: A Critical Review, Kiera O'Leary
International Undergraduate Journal of Health Sciences
The first descriptions of haemophilia A were reported in the second century AD, with the first modern description by John Conrad Otto in 1803. Historically, the natural history of haemophilia A was associated with very high rates morbidity and mortality, often following trivial accidents. Although treatment options for haemophilia A have been revolutionised in recent decades, haemophilia A remains a hereditary disease of concern and factor replacement products remain the mainstay of treatment.
As such, patients with haemophilia can carry huge burdens, particularly when a complication such as a FVIII inhibitor is present. A recently approved novel therapeutic, Emicizumab-kxwh, has …

SARS Co-V2 virus outbreak has resulted in a worldwide pandemic causing the death of approximately 5 million across the globe. The virus particle is transmitted via air droplets or by direct contact with surfaces. Infected individuals may present with moderate flu-like symptoms or may remain asymptomatic. While most cases of SARS Co-V2 resolve, some patients may progress to acute respiratory distress syndrome. The onset of ARDS is associated with a broad range of complications leading to increased morbidity and mortality. Sepsis induced coagulopathy is a clinically significant complication associated with the development of ARDS. Approximately 3% of Covid-19 patients will …
A Review Of The Pathogenesis, Clinical Features And Diagnostic Indicators Of The Novel Condition Vaccine-Induced Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia, Ada Fleming
International Undergraduate Journal of Health Sciences
The introduction of vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 infection was a welcome and significant event in the COVID-19 pandemic. While vaccine administration was for the most part successful, it did come with the emergence of a novel condition, Vaccine-Induced Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia (VITT). This condition presents after the administration of adenoviral vector-based vaccines against COVID-19, causing thrombocytopenia and thrombosis in affected individuals. There have been 10 suspected cases of VITT in Ireland. While its mechanism is not fully understood, the condition is characterised by the presence of Platelet Factor 4 (PF4) antibodies. There are several laboratory indicators which may suggest that a patient …
