The Effects Of True Crime Media, Zoe Patton
The Effects Of True Crime Media, Zoe Patton
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
True crime is a media genre of growing popularity, and also of growing controversy. Recent media production has sparked debate over how the genre affects the public's perception on crime, as well as how it affects the victims family. I wanted to discover how true crime media can be a genre that helps the public more than it hurts, and offers information and education rather than romanticization of terrible people and events, and discover all the ways that it can cause harm, so we can learn how to stop and understand the parts that can be harmful. Research was conducted …
Deep-Brain Shape Features Differentially Relate To Social Outcomes In Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury, Braydon Lee
Deep-Brain Shape Features Differentially Relate To Social Outcomes In Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury, Braydon Lee
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a global issue with major health consequences. The integrity of brain structures and their social functional correlates are at risk in children with TBI. In this study, magnetic resonance images of the thalamus, caudate, putamen, and globus pallidus were examined in a pediatric TBI group from the Social Outcomes of Brain Injury in Kids (SOBIK). Shape deformations of these structures were compared to an orthopedically injured (OI) control. Additionally, the correlation between shape deformation and theory of mind (ToM) measures were mapped and compared. This study found inward deformations in the ventral thalamic nuclei …
Integrative Revision Of Five Genera Type Species For Zoanthidea To Bridge The Parataxonomy Gap, Jacob Colbert
Integrative Revision Of Five Genera Type Species For Zoanthidea To Bridge The Parataxonomy Gap, Jacob Colbert
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Cnidarian order Zoanthidea is a relatively understudied group of invertebrates inhabiting a diverse range of marine habitats. Over/During the last two decades, species descriptions within this order have largely been based on a novel molecular parataxonomic system that relies almost exclusively on DNA barcodes to detect and describe new species. DNA barcodes are short, conserved sequences that are readily compared across taxa and used to detect previously described species. The existing taxonomic system, based on anatomical analysis and the identification of evolutionarily informative characters for phylogenetic inference, has been recently replaced by molecular parataxonomy by some scientists/researchers. While molecular sequence …

Remaining Useful Life (RUL) prediction is a key process for prognostic health management in almost all engineering real-world applications, especially which are in hazardous and challenging environments where the failures and disastrous faults cannot be avoided such as space vehicles and aircraft. This paper proposes a predictive approach based on our proposed algorithm Enhanced Adaptive Guided Differential Evolution (EAGDE) is used to optimize the parameter selection of Support Vector Machine (SVM) to give high RUL prediction accuracy. The advantages of the proposed approach (EAGDE–SVM) are verified using the popular benchmark C-MAPSS which describes the degradation of the aircraft turbofan engine …

Transition Guide And Supports For Families Of Adolescents With Disabilities, Chelsey S. Traut
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Often when individuals with disabilities transitioned out of high school, there were a variety of repeated questions that teachers and administrators seemed to constantly be answering each year. The first goal of the project was to answer those questions and potentially serve as a resource for teachers and other professionals to answer the questions parents/guardians were asking them. Another goal was that even if the information was different for their district it could at the very least guide professionals and families in the right direction to find answers and support. The literature review provides information about parent/guardian and teacher collaboration …

Evidence-Based Study: The Effect Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Post-Secondary Enrollment And Chosen Fields Of Study, Hannah Fields '25
Student Research
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States in March of 2020 derailed educational systems at all levels. Specifically, at the post-secondary level, the pandemic sent many students online or forced them to take a fifth year to complete their degrees. As a result, post-secondary enrollment rates are likely to have dropped to reflect these changing post-COVID views surrounding education. Additionally, changing viewpoints about the essentiality of certain jobs and roles changed the chosen fields of study of these same students. Data for this study was collected by way of a short-scale meta-analysis, and enrollment rates were split …

Vertical And Diel Behavior Patterns Of Adult Lemon Sharks (Negaprion Brevirostris) Around The Southeastern Florida And Western Bahamas Coastal Shelves, Jacquelyne Reuder
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
The lemon shark (Negaprion brevirostris) is a large sub-tropical species found in the western Atlantic Ocean from Virginia to Brazil, including The Bahamas and Caribbean Sea. Previous studies on habitat utilization were conducted on juveniles in The Bahamas, but little is known about vertical depth and temperature preferences of adults. Given the species’ risk to overexploitation and habitat degradation, the IUCN Red List recently listed lemon sharks as Vulnerable. Pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs) were deployed on lemon sharks (n=7) in 2008 and 2009 off Jupiter, Florida (n=6; two females, four males) and Tiger Beach, Bahamas (n=1; one …
The Effects Of Poor Maternal Nutrition In Ewes On The Growth And Development Of Offspring, Zoey Weisman
The Effects Of Poor Maternal Nutrition In Ewes On The Growth And Development Of Offspring, Zoey Weisman
Honors Scholar Theses
Maternal nutrition is the diet that a mother intakes from before pregnancy through the end of lactation (Martin, 2018). Pregnant ruminants that are raised in pastures are frequently subject to undernutrition due to changes in the quantity and quality of available forage, which results in detrimental effects on the development of muscle and adipose tissues of offspring that can persist into adulthood (Hoffman, 2014). The quality of animal feed varies due to weather changes and climate fluctuations. Sheep usually gestate during the winter, as they are short-day breeders, and during this time, the forage consumed is limited and usually of …
Spatial Variability Of Greenhouse Gases In Blue Carbon Mangrove Ecosystems, Jordan Page
Spatial Variability Of Greenhouse Gases In Blue Carbon Mangrove Ecosystems, Jordan Page
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Blue carbon ecosystems, including mangrove forests, play a vital role in the global carbon cycle through their carbon sequestration and storage capabilities. Mangrove trees remove CO2 from the atmosphere and store it within these ecosystems. Buildup of organic matter also contributes to high production of methane that is eventually released to adjacent coastal systems and to the atmosphere through air sea gas exchange. It is necessary to investigate environmental conditions that drive greenhouse gas fluctuations to understand how they will change due to climate change and ocean acidification impacts. The goal of this study is to investigate the spatial variability …

The PI3K pathway is a major cell signaling pathway that influences survival and longevity in eukaryotic cells. Abnormal signaling of this pathway has been implicated in a number of disorders, including Alzheimer's disease and cancer. The PI3K pathway utilizes the inositolphospholipid PI(3,4,5)P3 as a key secondary messenger in the transmission of signals from outside the cell to the nucleus. The SRC Homology 2 containing Inositol 5’-Phosphatase (SHIP) also plays a key role in the PI3K pathway, mediating hydrolysis of the inositol phospholipid PI(3,4,5)P3 to PI(3,4)P2. Early testing has shown modulation of SHIP activity through the use of small molecule modulators …
Biological Remediation Of Fragipan, Corey Hale
Biological Remediation Of Fragipan, Corey Hale
Honors College Theses
The fragipan layer in the soil is a naturally occurring subsurface layer that restricts water percolation as well as inhibits root growth. A fragipan layer can be found almost ubiquitously across Southwestern Kentucky. This limits how agriculturalists manage soils in this area. It has been recently discovered by the University of Kentucky that Annual Ryegrass roots produce 3,4 dihydroxyphenylpropionic acid (DHPPA) that reacts with this hardpan to weaken the layer. Certain bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, Lactobacilli, and Bifidobacteria can also synthesize DHPPA through a breakdown process of chlorogenic acid. This reaction typically happens in the human digestive tract. …

Investigating The Contribution Of Marine Viruses To Optical Backscatter In The <0.2 Μm Fraction Of Seawater, Kacey Mae Lange
Master's Theses
Marine viruses are the smallest and most abundant biological entities in the ocean. Marine viruses play a significant role in carbon and nutrient cycles through the liberation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) through the lysis of their numerically dominant hosts (i.e. bacteria and phytoplankton). Despite their importance, little is known about how viruses contribute to seawaters inherent optical properties (IOP) of seawater, specifically backscatter. All particles produce backscatter, with their contribution dependent on particle size, concentration, and composition. Living particles contribute 10-20% of the total backscatter with the remaining 80% of unclassified backscatter, “missing backscatter”, contributed by submicron particles ( …

Impacts Of The Poultry Industry In Mississippi, Sara Watts
Master's Theses
This thesis examines the impacts of the poultry industry in seven counties in the Piney Woods region of South Mississippi: Wayne, Jones, Forrest, Lamar, Jefferson Davis, Marion, and Pike. Current research indicates that the poultry industry has a significant impact on the cultures and economies of rural towns throughout the United States. There is no current research that examines the effects of the poultry industry on residents of the Piney Woods. This thesis addresses that gap in the research and contributes to current understanding of how the industry molds and impacts the lives of those intimately associated with it.

Genome-wide association studies have identified thousands of single nucleotide variants and small indels that contribute to variation in hematologic traits. While structural variants are known to cause rare blood or hematopoietic disorders, the genome-wide contribution of structural variants to quantitative blood cell trait variation is unknown. Here we utilized whole genome sequencing data in ancestrally diverse participants of the NHLBI Trans Omics for Precision Medicine program (N = 50,675) to detect structural variants associated with hematologic traits. Using single variant tests, we assessed the association of common and rare structural variants with red cell-, white cell-, and platelet-related quantitative …

Antarctica is a central driver of the Earth’s climate and health. The Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica serves as a major sink for anthropogenic CO2 and heat (1), and the loss of Antarctic ice sheets contributes significantly to sea level rise and will continue to do so as the loss of ice sheets accelerates, with sufficient water stores to raise sea levels by 58 m (2). Antarctica's marine environment is home to a number of iconic species, and the terrestrial realm harbors a remarkable oasis for life, much of which has yet to be discovered (3). Distinctive oceanographic features of the …

TP53 mutation is the most frequent genetic event in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), found in more than 80% of patients with human papillomavirus-negative disease. As mutations in the TP53 gene are associated with worse outcomes in HNSCC, novel therapeutic approaches are needed for patients with TP53-mutated tumors. The National Cancer Institute sponsored a Clinical Trials Planning Meeting to address the issues of identifying and developing clinical trials for patients with TP53 mutations. Subcommittees, or breakout groups, were tasked with developing clinical studies in both the locally advanced and recurrent and/or metastatic (R/M) disease settings as well as …

Moraxella bovis (M. bovis) is regarded as a causative agent of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), the most common ocular disease of cattle. Recently, whole genome sequencing identified the presence of two distinct genotypes within M. bovis that differ in chromosome content, potential virulence factors, as well as prophage and plasmid profiles. It is unclear if the genotypes equally associate with IBK or if one is more likely to be isolated from IBK lesions. We utilized 39 strains of M. bovis that had previously undergone whole genome sequencing and genotype classification to determine the utility of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization …

Background: The technology of cotton defoliation is essential for mechanical cotton harvesting. Agricultural unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) spraying has the advantages of low cost, high efficiency and no mechanical damage to cotton and has been favored and widely used by cotton planters in China. However, there are also some problems of low cotton defoliation rates and high impurity rates caused by unclear spraying amounts of cotton defoliants. The chemical rate recommendation and application should be based upon crop canopy volume rather than on land area. Plant height and leaf area index (LAI) is directly connected to plant canopy structure. …

Purpose
To evaluate the safety profile of lenadogene nolparvovec (Lumevoq) in patients with Leber hereditary optic neuropathy.
Design
Pooled analysis of safety data from 5 clinical studies.
Methods
A total of 189 patients received single unilateral or bilateral intravitreal injections of a recombinant adeno-associated virus 2 (rAAV2/2) vector encoding the human wild-type ND4 gene. Adverse events (AEs) were collected throughout the studies, up to 5 years. Intraocular inflammation and increased intraocular pressure (IOP) were ocular AEs of special interest. Other assessments included ocular examinations, vector bio-dissemination, and systemic immune responses against rAAV2/2.
Results
