Evaluating The Influence Of The Inclusion Of Liquid Brewers Yeast During Gestation On Ewe And Lamb Performance, Colostrum And Milk Quality, And Transfer Of Passive Immunity In Lambs, Julissa Navarrete
Theses and Dissertations
The microbrewery industry has experienced exponential growth since 2005. As a result, the by-products associated with this industry are becoming increasingly available. One of these by-products is liquid brewers yeast, which is produced in excess during the production of beer. For livestock producers that have access to microbreweries, a potentially economical way to feed their flock would to be repurpose the by-product that would otherwise be disposed. Similarly, microbreweries would benefit from repurposing the liquid brewers yeast as livestock feed, resulting in less waste and a more sustainable beer production system.Researchers have evaluated the effect of liquid brewers yeast supplementation …

Racial Tension, Public Mistrust, And Policing: Insights From Police Leaders In The Rio Grande Valley (Rgv)- A Research Note, Marika Dawkins-Cavazos
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
This paper presents preliminary insights from police leaders in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV), a southwestern border region of the United States. Perceptions among minority police leaders with respect to minority-police interactions have received little attention. To better understand the perceptions of minority police leaders, this study focused on whether police leaders in a predominantly Hispanic region of the country perceive that racial tensions influence police-community interactions. Using a purposive sample of 29 police leaders, preliminary results suggest that recent high-profile incidents have had some impact on how officers do their jobs. Implications for public policy and suggestions for future …
Cochlear Compartments Segmentation And Pharmacokinetics Using Micro Computed Tomography Images, Sanketh Satyanarayana Moudgalya
Cochlear Compartments Segmentation And Pharmacokinetics Using Micro Computed Tomography Images, Sanketh Satyanarayana Moudgalya
Theses
Local drug delivery to the inner ear via micropump implants has the potential to be much more effective than oral drug delivery for treating patients with sensorineural hearing loss and to protect hearing from ototoxic insult due to noise exposure. Delivering appropriate concentrations of drugs to the necessary cochlear compartments is of paramount importance; however, directly measuring local drug concentrations over time throughout the cochlea is not possible. Indirect measurement using otoacoustic emissions and auditory brainstem response are ineffective as they only provide an estimate of concentration and are susceptible to non-linear sensitivity effects. Imaging modalities such as MRI with …
A Phenomenological Examination Of Probation Officers' Perception On Black Female Ex-Offenders Transition And Successful Reentry Into Society, Anita Michelle Bryant
A Phenomenological Examination Of Probation Officers' Perception On Black Female Ex-Offenders Transition And Successful Reentry Into Society, Anita Michelle Bryant
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the experiences of probation officers who provided supervision in a reintegration program for post-release Black female offenders concerning their efforts to reduce recidivism. The feminist theory guided this research study, as it shed light on the barriers encountered by female offenders in the United States and expounded how they were specifically unique from the barriers faced by male offenders. The research questions were: what are probation officers’ perceptions of how reentry programs contribute to Black female ex-offenders’ successful transition back into the community, what are the probation officers’ perceptions of how …

A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study Of The Motivational Experiences Of United States Service Members Attending College While On Active Duty, Sean L. Mulvaney
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to explore the motivation of attending college through the experiences of active-duty Navy service members stationed at Naval Air Station East (NAS East). Specifically, the study sought to better understand how intrinsic and extrinsic motivators impact the behavior or actions that compel that small percentage of Navy service members to pursue a college education while balancing their military service requirements. With self-determination theory as the theoretical framework, the central research question asked, “What are the determining motivators that influence United States Navy service members to attend college while on active duty?” Data …

Osteosarcoma is a primary malignant bone tumor arising from bone-forming mesenchymal cells in children and adolescents. Despite efforts to understand the biology of the disease and identify novel therapeutics, the survival of osteosarcoma patients remains dismal. We have concurrently profiled the copy number and gene expression of 226 osteosarcoma samples as part of the Strategic Partnering to Evaluate Cancer Signatures (SPECS) initiative. Our results demonstrate the heterogeneous landscape of osteosarcoma in younger populations by showing the presence of genome-wide copy number abnormalities occurring both recurrently among samples and in a high frequency. Insulin growth factor receptor 1 (IGF1R) is a …

Influence Of Strip Clearcuts, Deer Exclusion And Herbicide On Initial Sapling Recruitment In Northern Hardwood Forests, Stefan Hupperts, Christopher R. Webster, Robert Froese, Brandon Bal, Yvette L. Dickinson
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Sapling recruitment in hardwood forests is often suppressed by overstory shade, interspecific competition, and browsing pressure from white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus Zimmerman). In some northern hardwood stands, these three interacting factors may cause persistent recruitment failure of the dominant canopy species, sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.), into the sapling size class. In this study, we compared initial (two-year) sugar maple and hophornbeam (Ostrya virginiana ((Mill.) K. Koch) seedling and sapling recruitment in strip clearcuts to strip selection cuts, with combinations of herbicide and deer exclosures, in a northern hardwood forest with limited sugar maple sapling recruitment. We found that sugar …
Evaluation Of Nearshore Carbonate Chemistry Within Major Navigational Inlets Of The Kristin Jacobs Coral Reef Ecosystem Conservation Area, Harrison Davis
Evaluation Of Nearshore Carbonate Chemistry Within Major Navigational Inlets Of The Kristin Jacobs Coral Reef Ecosystem Conservation Area, Harrison Davis
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
The absorption of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) by ocean surface water is causing ocean acidification (OA), a process by which the reaction between water and CO2 changes ocean carbonate chemistry. Predictions of OA trajectories modeled by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) are based on open ocean trends and may not accurately predict changes to variable nearshore ecosystems. The dynamic nature of nearshore ocean chemistry, and prevalence of OA vulnerable species within these ecosystems complicates the process of making accurate OA impact predictions within the coastal zone. Florida’s coral reef is a nearshore ecosystem vulnerable to …

Tumor Microenvironment In Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma: Implications In Immunotherapy, Caitlyn Smith, Wei Zheng, Jixin Dong, Yaohong Wang, Jinping Lai, Xiuli Liu, Feng Yin
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is one of the most aggressive and lethal cancers. Surgical resection is the only curable treatment option, but it is available for only a small fraction of patients at the time of diagnosis. With current therapeutic regimens, the average 5-year survival rate is less than 10% in pancreatic cancer patients. Immunotherapy has emerged as one of the most promising treatment options for multiple solid tumors of advanced stage. However, its clinical efficacy is suboptimal in most clinical trials on pancreatic cancer. Current studies have suggested that the tumor microenvironment is likely the underlying barrier affecting immunotherapy drug …

Phospholipids are ligands for nuclear hormone receptors (NRs) that regulate transcriptional programs relevant to normal physiology and disease. Here, we demonstrate that mimicking phospholipid-NR interactions is a robust strategy to improve agonists of liver receptor homolog-1 (LRH-1), a therapeutic target for colitis. Conventional LRH-1 modulators only partially occupy the binding pocket, leaving vacant a region important for phospholipid binding and allostery. Therefore, we constructed a set of molecules with elements of natural phospholipids appended to a synthetic LRH-1 agonist. We show that the phospholipid-mimicking groups interact with the targeted residues in crystal structures and improve binding affinity, LRH-1 transcriptional activity, …
Mestiza Teatro: An Examination On The Historical Artform Of The Latina / Chicana Theatre Collective, Cheyenne Felicitas Flores
Mestiza Teatro: An Examination On The Historical Artform Of The Latina / Chicana Theatre Collective, Cheyenne Felicitas Flores
Theses and Dissertations
Teatro groups were a form of devised theatre that came to shape after the influential times of the Chicano National Movement of the 1960s and 70s. Due to its strong relationship with the movement, teatro became the epitome of performance culture for the Chicano/Latino public. But as Chicana scholars argue, the female narrative on stage through the use of teatro was limited, static, dichotomous, and misrepresented. This confining restriction to seeing Latina performers only as mothers, strippers, maids, and other stereotypical roles is still present today. This paper aims to articulate that this gender-subordinate representation has a history in formation, …

Proposal To Augment U.S. Army Lsa And Uars, Cameron Beard
Discovery Day - Prescott
The U.S. Army currently has a gap in its aerial reconnaissance capabilities, with the OH-58D Kiowa completing its phase transition to the AH-64E. Since the Army has done away with its rotary-wing scout aircraft, it currently relies on the AH-64E attack helicopter (an aircraft not designed for such a role), in tandem with UAS RQ- 7Bs and MQ-1C Grey Eagle. These aircraft use the MUM-T (Manned-Unmanned Teaming) system, which allows AH-64E pilots to control the camera and weaponry of the drones while both aircraft are in flight. The draw back to this system lies in two categories; 1) the inability …

Responsible Imagineering: John Dewey's Pluralistic Ethics And Technological Innovation, John A. Machielsen
Responsible Imagineering: John Dewey's Pluralistic Ethics And Technological Innovation, John A. Machielsen
Education and Culture
I argue for taking John Dewey’s pluralistic ethics as a starting point, or embedded practice, from and in which technological innovations are conceptualized, critiqued, designed, tested, and eventually implemented. Dewey reconstructs human reason into operational intelligence where all behavior becomes gradually imaginative. I take Dewey’s view of moral deliberation as a basis for a responsible process-based methodology combining creative technological design with the training of imaginative prospection. I further use Dewey’s conception of technology that holds that implements, but also ideas and concepts are tools, forms of technology. I end by looking at the educational impact for the creative industries.

Protecting Beaches From Bites: Shark Management Programs In New England, Grayson P. Szczepaniak
Protecting Beaches From Bites: Shark Management Programs In New England, Grayson P. Szczepaniak
Ocean and Coastal Law Journal
With shark encounters on the rise along the New England coast, state officials have the perfect opportunity to implement the United States’ first large-scale shark management program similar to that enacted in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Management programs are comprised of control measures that prevent sharks from swimming too close to beachgoers, and thus reduce the number of human-shark interactions. Sharks have long been portrayed by the media as man-eating monsters, and this negative image is deeply intertwined with lethal control measures taken by local governments in response to shark bites. However, such lethal action can cause a decrease in shark …
Maine Lobstermen And The North Atlantic Right Whale: The Ongoing Conflict And The Obvious Solution, Allison K. Briggs
Maine Lobstermen And The North Atlantic Right Whale: The Ongoing Conflict And The Obvious Solution, Allison K. Briggs
Ocean and Coastal Law Journal
The majestic North Atlantic right whale is on the brink of extinction. With fewer than seventy breeding females left, every loss contributes to a decrease in biodiversity and brings us closer to an unrecognizable planet. Like most critically endangered species, the plummeting number of North Atlantic right whales is a direct result of human activity. Specifically, gear used by the lobster fishing industry is entangling and killing right whales off the coast of Maine. The federal Endangered Species Act, meant to protect vulnerable species like the North Atlantic right whale, is violated every time the State of Maine permits Maine …
Uncertainty In Law And Science: The International Legal Status Of Scrubber Wash Water, Shams Al-Din Al-Hajjaji
Uncertainty In Law And Science: The International Legal Status Of Scrubber Wash Water, Shams Al-Din Al-Hajjaji
Ocean and Coastal Law Journal
This article argues in favor of stricter regulation to the wash water resulting from the Exhaust Gas Cleaning System aboard ships. These systems are also known as scrubbers. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has required the shipping industry to reduce the fuel oil sulfur limit to 0.5%, and in emission control areas to 0.1%. To achieve this reduction, ship owners use scrubbers to comply with this regulation, which essentially cleans the fuel. However, the current legal framework of scrubber wash water lacks certainty due to two reasons. The first reason is uncertainty in the law, because it is not clear …

Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers have multiple applications in plant breeding of small grains. They are used for the selection of divergent parents, the identification of genetic variants and marker-assisted selection. However, the use of SNPs in varietal purity assessment is under-reported, especially for multi-line varieties from the public sector. In the case of variety evaluation, these genetic markers are tools for maintaining varietal distinctness, uniformity and stability needed for cultivar release of multi-line or pure-line varieties of inbred crops. The objective of this research was to evaluate the purity and relationships of one original (AV-25) and two multi-line sub-populations …
