On The Intersections Of Childhood Maltreatment, Self-Control, And Behavioral Outcomes Across The Life-Course, Ameleigh Bippen
On The Intersections Of Childhood Maltreatment, Self-Control, And Behavioral Outcomes Across The Life-Course, Ameleigh Bippen
Honors Theses
Childhood abuse and neglect are highly deleterious experiences that a number of children continue to encounter. The purpose of the current discussion is to examine the impact of childhood abuse and neglect on the growth and development of self-control in early childhood. In service of this goal, several methods were employed, including a review of the historical and current research on the development of self-control. In addition to this, specific scientific theories and their advancements were analyzed to provide further insight into the connection between poor impulse regulation (and decision-making) and downstream linkages with criminal offending. Perhaps not surprisingly, evidence …
Effects On Youth Experiencing Homelessness In Public Schools, Abby Golish
Effects On Youth Experiencing Homelessness In Public Schools, Abby Golish
Counselor Education Capstones
Abstract
An examination of the issues of youth who are experiencing homelessness is crucial in supporting this vulnerable population. Public schools have a responsibility to assist these students in their academic, career, and social-emotional development. With unique, personal needs, students who are homeless must be understood by school counselors and other school personnel to be appropriately supported. Homelessness can be identified through many characteristics and identified needs. It is key for school counselors to recognize these characteristics and consider the impacts that the school and resources can make on the student’s life. Throughout the paper, the causes of homelessness, potential …
Pipeline To Power: A Creative Exploration Of My Journey To Black Youth Empowerment, Junichi Uehara Lockett
Pipeline To Power: A Creative Exploration Of My Journey To Black Youth Empowerment, Junichi Uehara Lockett
Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive
Through an arts-based autoethnography, I explored the influences and experiences that informed my approach to leading Black youth empowerment programming. Although there is a significant amount of scholarship on Black youth empowerment programming and its importance to Black children, there is limited literature on how one becomes a Black youth empowerment facilitator in the community. I sought to answer the following questions: (1) How did external forces and people inform my approach to leading Black youth empowerment programming? (2) How did my inner drive and consciousness inform my approach to leading Black youth empowerment programming? (3) How does a critique …

Mediation Of Intergenerational Trauma Transmission By Family Variables In Children Of Rwandan Survivors Of The 1994 Genocide Against The Tutsi, Jessica L. Bonumwezi
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Twenty-eight years after the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, children of survivors are being increasingly documented to show increased risk for adverse mental health outcomes. However, no studies in Rwanda have empirically explored psychosocial factors underlying this intergenerational transmission of trauma. We investigated family factors that could underlie this transmission in 285 adult Rwandan children of survivors (mean age = 23.31; 50.2% female) who completed an online survey. We found that 42.2% of participants had clinically significant secondary PTSD symptoms and 37.8% had clinically significant symptoms of depression or anxiety. For participants with survivor mothers (n = 187), …

Commercial Sexual Exploitation: A Survey Of The Knowledge, Concerns, And Training Of Transit Personnel In Las Vegas, Nevada, Elena A. Bejinariu
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Transportation personnel, in particular bus drivers, encounter young people who are commercially sexually exploited frequently and throughout the course of their daily jobs. Given the frequency of this interaction, bus drivers are perceived to be the eyes and ears of the transportation industry, playing a key role in the identification and prevention of trafficking. To support national efforts in combating human trafficking, between September 1st, 2020 and June 15th, 2021, the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Southern Nevada trained all its existing employees and new hires on human trafficking dynamics and reporting protocols. These included legal definitions, victim characteristics, recruitment …

Veterans Transition Center Self-Care Guide For Case Managers, Camille Quiroz
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The Veterans Transition Center provides transitional housing for homeless veterans in Monterey County and assists veterans in increasing their self-sufficiency. This project was completed within the Permanent Supportive Housing Program, which provides housing for up to two years. At the macro level, case managers and social workers experience work burnout earlier in their careers due to a lack of mental health support. The VTC currently has no established mental health support system for case managers. This project is an educational intervention designed to increase the case managers’ awareness of mental health and the importance of self-care by providing resources in …
Improving Knowledge Of Parents Of Hispanic Culture On Emotional Trauma And Abuse Towards Children, Marisol Ramos
Improving Knowledge Of Parents Of Hispanic Culture On Emotional Trauma And Abuse Towards Children, Marisol Ramos
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Some Hispanic/Latinx parents or caregivers raise their children in similar modalities of how they were raised, which, in the culture of the United States may include negative components that could lead to emotional abuse and trauma.
To address parents and/or caregivers' lack of knowledge to reduce those parenting practices that can contribute to emotional trauma and increase those practices that can improve well-being, I have created a one-day workshop curriculum for parents attending the Monterey County Department of Social Services weekly parent meetings in Salinas, California.

Immigration And Social Work: A Content Analysis Of Schools In Liberal States, Yenicka Avila, Stephanie Ibarra
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The social work profession vows to defend society’s most vulnerable populations, including undocumented immigrants. Yet, how immigration is perceived in social work education and the extent to which social works schools are integrated this concept in their mission statements and/or social media pages remain understudied in the existing literature. This study is a mixed-methods content analysis of 133 social work schools accredited (or in the process of accreditation) by the Council of Social Work Education (N = 133). It was hypothesized that the proportion of social work schools that overtly/covertly mentioned immigration in their mission statements and Facebook pages will …

Former Foster Youth Who Become Child Welfare Workers, Candace Watts, Shantel Ortega
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Former foster youth who become child welfare workers are an asset to the child welfare system because of the combination of their lived experience and professional experience in child welfare, which allows them to understand the circumstances of their clients on a deeper level. This study seeks to uncover the reasons why former foster youth become child welfare workers. There are three main questions that our study seeks to know: What factors lead former foster youth to become workers in child welfare? Do these workers have any advantages because of their past personal experiences with child welfare? And do child …

To What Extent Do Gender Role Stereotypes Impact Mental Health Professionals’ Perceptions Of Men, Raeshema Holland
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Many people suffer from mental health disorders. Gender disparities in mental health treatment and research need to be continuously addressed to ensure that all individuals seeking emotional support receive adequate and competent care. This research focused on bringing awareness to men's neglected mental health needs. Results are discussed in the context of theories of social roles and ambivalence towards men. This study used social role theory and ambivalent sexism theory to explain best how western traditional gender norms can impact us all. Ambivalent sexism pertains to how our attitudes and beliefs can be shaped and are extremely complex. Ambivalent biases …

Family Perspectives On Developmental Monitoring: A Qualitative Study, Sarah Behrens, Evan Dean, Marisol Torres
Developmental Disabilities Network Journal
Developmental monitoring, an ongoing process to identify children at risk for developmental delays, is an essential component to the identification of a developmental disability in young children. In collaboration with families, medical professionals are expected to monitor the development of a child; however, current research focuses on screening with less attention on developmental monitoring and the role of the family. Here, we show the experiences of families with medical professionals specific to developmental monitoring and how families obtain and develop knowledge on child development. We analyze qualitative data from a sample of family caregivers using semi-structured interviews. With a thematic …

From The Mouths Of Women: The Life Model Of Homelessness, Janeal M. White
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to identify commonalities in life events preceding a first episode of homelessness for women living in shelters in Texas. This built on the work of Nooe & Patterson (2010) who identified fourteen factors that contributed to increased risk of homelessness as visualized in the Ecology of Homelessness. While based on existing literature at the time, Nooe & Patterson may not have heard clearly the voices of women with lived experience. The current study sought to explore how these risk factors manifest in the lived experiences of women residing in Texas homeless shelters.
The significance …
Choosing Children: Preventing Intra-Family Conflict From Feeding The Prison Pipeline, Samantha D. Mier
Choosing Children: Preventing Intra-Family Conflict From Feeding The Prison Pipeline, Samantha D. Mier
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
Parents struggling to raise challenging children often lack needed community
support. These parents turn to law enforcement when they feel their
child cannot be controlled. Problematically, law enforcement officers are
trained to respond to crime, not simple parent-child domestic disputes. Thus,
when parents call police during disagreements, the argument may end in arrest
and contact with the juvenile court system. Interaction with the juvenile
justice system carries a myriad of risks. This comment outlines the risks inherent
in calling the police and entering the juvenile court system. The author
evaluates existing alternatives to calling law enforcement and recommends
that communities …
Embracing A Pedagogy Of Care In The Infant And Toddler Classroom, Paige D. Wernick
Embracing A Pedagogy Of Care In The Infant And Toddler Classroom, Paige D. Wernick
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Care is a universal concept which connects us all as humans. Everyone comes into this world needing care and most of us will exit this world in need of care. Care is necessary throughout the span of our lives and should be considered a human right. Everyone is entitled to quality care, no matter their age or social status. The U.S. society has been entrenched in a decades long division between education and care which has historically prioritized education over care. This division has contributed to care being hidden and undervalued within the context of early childhood (EC) as a …
Supporting Grandfamilies During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Federal Flexibility And New Funding, Ana Beltran
Supporting Grandfamilies During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Federal Flexibility And New Funding, Ana Beltran
GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy
The Covid-19 pandemic has elevated and heightened the challenges and inequities that grandfamilies face. Unlike parents, with automatic legal rights and responsibilities to the children, grandfamily caregivers are often left to navigate systems that impact them but do not understand them. Federal response to the pandemic began by perpetuating these existing challenges. The CARES Act failed to explicitly name grandfamilies for system support, and they and those who work with them had to individually advocate in local communities. Later in the response efforts, federal legislation specifically called out supports for grandfamilies by providing unique federal funding flexibilities for kinship navigator …
Relational Trust In Group Coaching With First-Grade Teachers: A Single Case Study, Jentry Stoneman Barrett
Relational Trust In Group Coaching With First-Grade Teachers: A Single Case Study, Jentry Stoneman Barrett
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Coaching has become a prominent professional development tool for helping early childhood teachers implement curriculum and research-based practices in their classrooms. One of the coaching strategies found to create positive changes in teacher practice and child outcomes is building trust between the coach and teacher(s). Despite what is known in terms of the benefits of these positive relationships, there is limited understanding of the nature of trust-building between coach and teachers, in general, and particularly in group coaching configurations. There is also scant literature exploring the nature of trust between teachers participating in group coaching sessions. Researchers call these two …

Analysis Of Follow-Up Times For Families Discharged From Opioid Addiction Treatment Facilities, Abigail Reith, Carley Reith, Lindsay Moskal, Rachael Neilan
Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium
Caregivers who receive treatment for opioid addiction often face adverse post-discharge incidents involving Children, Youth, and Family (CYF) services. These incidents can be traumatic for the children involved, potentially leading to the removal of a child from their home. Nonprofit social service organizations like Auberle aim to minimize these adverse events by implementing frequent follow-ups with discharged caregivers and their families.
We collaborated with Auberle social services (Pittsburgh, PA) and the Allegheny County Department of Human Services (DHS) to evaluate the effectiveness of standard follow-up times (7, 30, and 90 days post-discharge) in preventing CYF incident and to determine if …

This study characterized the rates of rates of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adolescent and young adult males with fragile X syndrome (FXS) using a multi-method approach integrating a DSM-based parent interview (Children’s Interview for Psychiatric Syndromes; P-ChIPS, Fristad et al., 1998) and a parent rating scale (Child Behavior Checklist; CBCL, Achenbach, 2001). Thirty-one males with FXS, aged 16-24 years, participated. Forty-two percent met DSM-5 criteria for ADHD and 35% exceeded the CBCL cut-offs. Agreement between the two classification methods was fair (κ=0.38). Autism symptom severity and nonverbal cognitive ability did not predict ADHD diagnoses/symptoms. Results show …

Examining The Relationship Between Functionally Assessed Parental Behavior And Child Anxiety, Allison Smith
Examining The Relationship Between Functionally Assessed Parental Behavior And Child Anxiety, Allison Smith
LSU Master's Theses
Etiological theories of child anxiety suggest an interaction of multiple factors that lead to the development and maintenance of child anxiety. Environmental influence, specifically that involving the family or parent, has been a target area of study for decades. Additionally, functional assessment of behavior indicates that certain behaviors may be maintained primarily by specific functions. Functional assessment has been successful at identifying functions of problematic behavior and planning treatment accordingly. However, in the realm of child internalizing disorders, research has not utilized functional assessment in this way. Acknowledging the impact of parental behavior on child anxiety as well as the …
