The Correlation Between Spiritual Well-Being And Burnout Of Teachers, Joe Pong

Faculty of Management & Hospitality (THEi)

This study examines the correlation between spiritual well-being and burnout symptoms, including emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalisation (DP), and personal accomplishment (PA), among Chinese secondary school teachers in Hong Kong. The data were collected from 427 Chinese secondary school teachers (189 males, 238 females) aged 25–37 from different schools with one to eight years of teaching experience. The participants completed the Spiritual Health and Life-orientation Measure (SHALOM) to evaluate the status of their spiritual well-being in the personal and communal, environmental, and transcendental domains. The Maslach Burnout Inventory—Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) was also used to measure the extent of burnout in …

Professional Speech At Scale, Cassandra Burke Robertson, Sharona Hoffman Jan 2022

Professional Speech At Scale, Cassandra Burke Robertson, Sharona Hoffman

Faculty Publications

Regulatory actions affecting professional speech are facing new challenges from all sides. On one side, the Supreme Court has grown increasingly protective of professionals’ free speech rights, and it has subjected regulations affecting that speech to heightened levels of scrutiny that call into question traditional regulatory practices in both law and medicine. On the other side, technological developments, including the growth of massive digital platforms and the introduction of artificial intelligence programs, have created brand new problems of regulatory scale. Professional speech is now able to reach a wide audience faster than ever before, creating risks that misinformation will cause …

Justice By Geography: The Role Of Monetary Sanctions Across Communities, Gabriela Kirk, Kristina Thompson, Beth Huebner, Christopher Uggen, Sarah Shannon Jan 2022

Justice By Geography: The Role Of Monetary Sanctions Across Communities, Gabriela Kirk, Kristina Thompson, Beth Huebner, Christopher Uggen, Sarah Shannon

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Works

Monetary sanctions are a ubiquitous part of court systems. Previous studies have focused largely on these sanctions at the state level or solely on large urban jurisdictions. However, court systems differ considerably across communities of varying population size, composition, and density. This article examines how differences in court structure and organizational dynamics in communities across the rural-urban continuum lead to differences in how court actors consider the role of monetary sanctions. Using interviews with court actors and ethnographic observations in communities across four states, we find that the practical and symbolic nature of monetary sanctions varied by the acquaintanceship density …

To be their best, people need relationships. Social support systems are at the base of what makes a successful individual. Whether that be through sports teams, clubs, or any other facet, social support is the driving force for a healthy lifestyle. After-school programs offer students another opportunity to receive mentorship and build relationships that can impact the trajectory of their lives. This paper highlights Impact 180 – an after-school program located in Orange City, Iowa. The involved researchers used and discussed different community organizing methods and techniques to advocate for and raise funds for the durability, sustainability, and flourishing of …

Anger And Intimate Partner Violence In Young Adults: The Role Of Impulsivity, Olga Gulyayeva Fuller Jan 2022

Anger And Intimate Partner Violence In Young Adults: The Role Of Impulsivity, Olga Gulyayeva Fuller

Theses and Dissertations

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a widespread concern that has been associated with a number of negative outcomes, including mental health problems, and is especially prevalent among young adults (Black, 2011; Miller & McCaw, 2019). Anger has been identified as a risk factor for IPV perpetration, however not all instances of anger within a relationship result in the perpetration of IPV (Birkley & Eckhardt, 2015, Baumeister & Boden, 1998). Impulsivity has been proposed as a possible explanation for why some but not all instances of anger lead to aggression (Baumeister & Boden, 1998). Furthermore, some literature has suggested an interaction …

The Efficacy Of Us-Mexico Border Enforcement In Relation To Crime Prevention, Samuel Klopstock Jan 2022

The Efficacy Of Us-Mexico Border Enforcement In Relation To Crime Prevention, Samuel Klopstock

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

The Trump Administration brought substantive changes to United States immigration policies, and labeled undocumented immigrants as predisposed towards criminal behavior. This paper presents a brief historical perspective of three major waves of Mexican immigration to the United States: The Early 1900s – Before World War I, Post-World War I – World War II, End of Bracero Accord – Present, and considers the relationship between immigrants and crime. The author explores contemporary immigration enforcement, both conservative and liberal attitudes towards immigrants, and their effects on policy. Consequences of border enforcement policies and the efficacy of border enforcement in preventing crime are …

Parenting, Neighborhood Characteristics, And Disruptive Child Behavior In Low-Income African American Families, Alyssa Buthman Jan 2022

Parenting, Neighborhood Characteristics, And Disruptive Child Behavior In Low-Income African American Families, Alyssa Buthman

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to further examine the multifaceted relationship between parenting, neighborhood characteristics, and child disruptive behavior. Examining data from a low-income, African American preschool sample, this study investigated how self-reported neighborhood characteristics and observed parenting behaviors uniquely predicted observed disruptive behavior in children. Findings supported the strong relationship between parenting behaviors and child disruptive behavior where parenting sensitivity and engagement were predictive of fewer child disruptive behaviors while verbal and physical parenting interference and intrusiveness was predictive of greater disruptive child behavior. Neighborhood characteristics did not directly relate to parenting or child behaviors. However, neighborhood characteristics …

Understanding Possible Risk And Protective Factors For High School Students Who Experience Chronic Childhood Trauma, Albert Johnson Jan 2022

Understanding Possible Risk And Protective Factors For High School Students Who Experience Chronic Childhood Trauma, Albert Johnson

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Students enter their respective school buildings with unknown past physical, emotional, or mental traumas due to dynamics within their family, community, or school (Izard & National, 2016). Experiencing trauma in childhood can lead to a myriad of educational challenges, such as lower grades, more suspensions and expulsions, increased use of mental health services, and increased involvement with child welfare and juvenile justice systems (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2016). The prevalence of childhood traumas, neighborhood problems, discrimination, chronic strains, adverse life events, and daily hassles are also associated with severe mental …

Reimagining Public Safety, Brandon Hasbrouck Jan 2022

Reimagining Public Safety, Brandon Hasbrouck

Scholarly Articles

In the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder, abolitionists were repeatedly asked to explain what they meant by “abolish the police”—the idea so seemingly foreign that its literal meaning evaded interviewers. The narrative rapidly turned to the abolitionists’ secondary proposals, as interviewers quickly jettisoned the idea of literally abolishing the police. What the incredulous journalists failed to see was that abolishing police and prisons is not aimed merely at eliminating the collateral consequences of other social ills. Abolitionists seek to build a society in which policing and incarceration are unnecessary. Rather than a society without a means of protecting public safety, …

The Impact Of Intimate Partner Violence On Women's Financial Wellbeing, Rowan Dunton Jan 2022

The Impact Of Intimate Partner Violence On Women's Financial Wellbeing, Rowan Dunton

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

Domestic violence and intimate partner violence against women affects all aspects of their health, including physical, mental, emotional, and economic health. When social programs, support networks, and better opportunities exist to improve the lives of female survivors, the financial impact of their abuse can be addressed and reduced in a significant, sustainable manner. Reviewing existing literature on this financial impact of abuse makes it apparent what women want and need to recover from their former, or even ongoing, situations. Effective preventative measures against financial harm include closing the gender wage gap and offering welfare programs for lower-income women to increase …

Triaging Lomax: An Urgent Proposal For Legislative Reform To Restore Judicial Protection In American Prisons, Alexis B. Thurston Jan 2022

Triaging Lomax: An Urgent Proposal For Legislative Reform To Restore Judicial Protection In American Prisons, Alexis B. Thurston

Duquesne Law Review

In a 2003 study of trends in inmate litigation before and after the enactment of the Prison Litigation Reform Act ("PLRA"), Harvard Law School Professor Margo Schlanger described the PLRA's administrative exhaustion requirement as "the statute's most damaging component."1 Almost two decades later, in June of 2020, the United States Supreme Court indirectly strengthened the administrative exhaustion requirement through its ruling in Lomax v. Ortiz-Marquez.2 In Lomax, the Court found that all dismissals of inmate litigation resulting from the failure of an incarcerated plaintiff to adhere to the exhaustion requirement would count as "strikes" against the …

What Machines Can Teach Us About "Confrontation", Andrea Roth Jan 2022

What Machines Can Teach Us About "Confrontation", Andrea Roth

Duquesne Law Review

In this short Article, I argue that treating non-human conveyances of information-and other forms of evidence that cannot be cross-examined-as beyond the Confrontation Clause is unsatisfactory as a matter of text, history, logic, and principle. Instead, all of these clues lead to one conclusion: the right of confrontation is a right not only to physical presence of certain human witnesses to facilitate demeanor review and questioning, but to a meaningful opportunity to scrutinize the government's proof, whatever its form.8 That right would include out-of-court discovery of critical contextual information about the evidence, whether or not exculpatory, and a …

The Inscrutability Problem: From First-Generation Forensic Science To Neuroimaging Evidence, Jane Campbell Moriarty Jan 2022

The Inscrutability Problem: From First-Generation Forensic Science To Neuroimaging Evidence, Jane Campbell Moriarty

Duquesne Law Review

Expert testimony continues to turn away from human-based skills to embrace machine-based evidence. Technology is used to identify and locate individuals, unlock encrypted devices, and even to evaluate criminal responsibility. Perhaps this is a positive change. The shortcomings of first-generation forensic identification specialties are substantial and include the inscrutability of its subjective comparisons. As such, this newer generation of evidence may well be an improvement. Yet the inscrutability problem adopts many forms. Machine-based evidence relies on hardware, software, algorithms, statistics, and engineering to reach results-ones created and interpreted by humans subject to bias and cognitive error; results the justice system …

Technology - Revealing Or Framing The Truth? A Jurisprudential Debate, Dana Neacsu Jan 2022

Technology - Revealing Or Framing The Truth? A Jurisprudential Debate, Dana Neacsu

Duquesne Law Review

Technology is so much more than a prosthetic. But how much more? And what else is it? In the legal realm, its role is not yet clear. Such a lack of elucidation becomes problematic, especially when technology has the ability to convert assumptions into facts, and it takes on a truth-making, rather than a mere truth-revealing mission. This Article argues that it is problematic to enable technology to stand in for reflective thinking, and calls attention to the fact that evidentiary rules enable technology to decide what can be proven, ergo what truth is.

Considering "Machine Testimony": The Impact Of Facial Recognition Software On Eyewitness Identifications, Valena Beety Jan 2022

Considering "Machine Testimony": The Impact Of Facial Recognition Software On Eyewitness Identifications, Valena Beety

Duquesne Law Review

Andrea Roth's seminal work in Machine Testimony and Trial by Machine presented a problem that is now upon us: addressing biased algorithms and the rampant reliance on technology by prosecutors and law enforcement.1 That reliance, however, is no longer unquestioning. Roth's work came at a crucial moment in time, when other articles were embracing the apparent impartiality of technology and algorithms for use in the criminal legal system. Her scholarship steered us away from that blind acceptance and dove deep, not only questioning technology itself, but also how to frame those questions of technology in the courtroom.
