Applying Transformative Evaluation To Assess Service Provided To African Americans Through The Snap-Ed Program, Matthew Greene
Applying Transformative Evaluation To Assess Service Provided To African Americans Through The Snap-Ed Program, Matthew Greene
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Obesity and food insecurity are disproportionately experienced by African Americans compared to white Americans. African Americans encounter multiple barriers to healthful eating in their food environment, in part due to structural racism. Four studies were undertaken to understand how SNAP-Ed may best address the needs of African Americans and whether the program is serving African Americans in Louisiana equitably. In the first study, a scoping review was conducted to describe nutrition interventions addressing structural racism experienced by African Americans and compare them to the Getting to Equity in Obesity Prevention Framework. Nearly all included studies focused on PSE change interventions …

Donna Regan-Southwick, Oral History Interview, 2022, Matt Jones
Oral Histories
In 2021, Eastern Michigan University Archives lecturer Matt Jones began documenting the story of Ypsilanti’s Human Rights Ordinance #1279 in an effort to explore the ways in which local queer activism has evolved multi-generationally in Ypsilanti. What began as a refusal of service by a local print shop to a small EMU student group quickly turned into a years-long battle over who was deserving of basic human rights. To the LGBTQ activists and community members documented here, they had always been present in the community: working, paying taxes, painting their houses, mowing their lawns, attending council meetings, and even serving …

Intergenerational Risk And Resilience Pathways From Discrimination And Acculturative Stress To Infant Mental Health, Sabrina R. Liu, Curt A. Sandman, Elyssia Poggi Davis, Laura M. Glynn
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Preconception and prenatal stress impact fetal and infant development, and women of color are disproportionately exposed to sociocultural stressors like discrimination and acculturative stress. However, few studies examine links between mothers’ exposure to these stressors and offspring mental health, or possible mitigating factors. Using linear regression, we tested associations between prenatally assessed maternal acculturative stress and discrimination on infant negative emotionality among 113 Latinx/Hispanic, Asian American, Black, and Multiethnic mothers and their children. Additionally, we tested interactions between stressors and potential pre- and postnatal resilience-promoting factors: community cohesion, social support, communalism, and parenting self-efficacy. Discrimination and acculturative stress were related …

The national opioid crisis has had devastating effects on the United States (US) healthcare system with the financial burden totaling more than $2 trillion from 2015 to 2018 (White House Government, 2020) and the physical burden of 128 overdose-related deaths daily (Centers for Disease Control, 2020). According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), some of these deaths result from deficits in education of healthcare providers about pain management treatment (CDC, 2020). Improved education for healthcare providers has resulted in a significant decline in the total number of opioid prescriptions from 2016 to 2019, which suggests that successful containment of …

"Some Prefer The Seminoles": Violence And Disorder Among Soldiers And Settlers In The Second Seminole War, 1835-1842, James M. Denham
Florida Historical Quarterly
On November 26, 1835, Seminole Chief Charley Emaltha was murdered brutally as an act of retaliation. Against the wishes of many native leaders, he had agreed to emigrate west, as required by the earlier treaties of Paynes Landing and Fort Gibson. It soon became apparent that Osceola, a rival leader, and his band of followers were responsible. The news, when it spread, created panic throughout the frontier. At Alachua County’s seat at Newnansville, for example, Judge Robert Raymond Reid hurriedly dismissed the on-going session of the Superior Court of Alachua, Columbia, and Hillsborough counties so that everyone concerned could return …

"You Can't Go Wrong Being Safe": Motivations, Patterns, And Context Surrounding Use Of Fentanyl Test Strips For Heroin And Other Drugs., Megan K Reed, Amanda Guth, Venise J Salcedo, Jeffrey K Hom, Kristin L Rising
Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Unintentional drug overdose fatalities due to fentanyl contamination continue to increase. Fentanyl test strip (FTS) use has emerged as a valuable harm reduction strategy to detect the presence of fentanyl in drugs. However, motivation for FTS uptake and context surrounding use have not been well characterized in the literature. This study aimed to capture people who use drugs' (PWUD) lived experiences to understand motivations underlying FTS uptake, ongoing use, and actions after testing.
METHODS: We conducted qualitative interviews with PWUD at a harm reduction organization in Philadelphia, PA. Interviews asked about experiences with using FTS. Interviews were audio-recorded, professionally …

An Analysis Of Air Traffic Controllers’ Job Satisfaction, Sohel M. Imroz, Farhan Sadique, Nidhi Trambadia
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
The air traffic controllers' job is one of the most hectic in today’s world, predominantly due to its safety-critical operations and altering expectations. The primary purpose of this paper is to provide a holistic directory of determinants and synthesized reinforcements for air traffic controllers' job satisfaction. Researchers in the past have put the spotlight on individual air traffic controller’s technical job satisfaction factors, such as impacts from remote tower operation, airplane trajectory changes, and dynamic air traffic situations. However, none described the connection among those factors and how adjusting those factors can enhance the cognitive components related to their job …

Proceedings: 2022 Global Voices on the University of Dayton Campus
In 2000, South Africa’s president Thabo Mbeki stated that the twenty-first century would be the “Century of Africa.” Indeed I, like many, believe that Africa is a continent full of promise, rich cultural heritage, blessed with a wealth of natural resources, and poised to become a hub of innovation and progress. Recently, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken remarked that Africa is headed toward becoming one of the world’s most important economic regions, and that it will have a hand in shaping in the future of the world. Recent advances have been made in solar power, the “green tech” industry working …
Judicial Depictions Of Responsibility And Risk: The Erasure Of State Accountability In Canadian Sentencing Judgments Involving Indigenous People, Sarah Jane Nussbaum
Judicial Depictions Of Responsibility And Risk: The Erasure Of State Accountability In Canadian Sentencing Judgments Involving Indigenous People, Sarah Jane Nussbaum
PhD Dissertations
This dissertation is set within the context of Canadas mass imprisonment of Indigenous people and centres on a critical evaluation of reported sentencing judgments. In particular, the dissertation examines some of the ways in which sentencing judges both draw attention to, and obscure, state accountability. The dissertation demonstrates that sentencing judges erase the role of the state in the criminalization of Indigenous people and in the construction of Indigenous people as risky. The result is that sentencing judgments rationalize and support the re-entrenchment, rather than the redressing, of the states oppression of Indigenous people. The dissertation is theoretical and descriptive, …

Divergent Perspectives: Autistic Adults' Perceptions Of The Police, Megan M. Parry, Jessica Huff
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Purpose
Much of the current criminological research regarding police and the autistic community focuses on police training for interacting with autistic individuals or the experiences, fears and perceptions of parents or caregivers. Largely absent from the criminological research are the opinions and perceptions of autistic adults. The purpose of the paper is to examine perceptions of the police and police-led initiatives among these individuals.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors analyze data from 121 autistic adults regarding their perceptions of the police and police-led autism awareness efforts using ordinary least squares (OLS) regression. Variables of interest include perceptions of procedural justice, police treatment …

The Norm Life Cycle Theory And The Role Of Insol International In Shaping The Uncitral Model Law On Cross-Border Insolvency, Anthony Ikemefuna Idigbe
PhD Dissertations
The involvement of non-state entities in global public norm evolution has been the subject of many studies, especially in international human rights law and policy. This study explains the role of a non-state entity, INSOL International, in shaping the UNCITRAL Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1997 using the life cycle approach developed in the human rights and policy context. The study utilized a triangulation of doctrinal, empirical and legal history data to determine whether the norm life cycle theory could explain the role of INSOL in shaping the Model Law. The study found …

Jury Nullification As A Spectrum, Richard Lorren Jolly
Jury Nullification As A Spectrum, Richard Lorren Jolly
Pepperdine Law Review
Jury nullification traditionally refers to the jury’s power to deliver a verdict that is deliberately contrary to the law’s clearly dictated outcome. A spirited scholarship is built around this conception, with some painting nullification as democratic and others as anarchic. But this debate is largely unmoored from experience. In practice, courts have formally eliminated the jury’s authority to review the law and have established procedures that make it easier to prevent and overturn seemingly nullificatory verdicts. Thus, outside of a jury’s verdict acquitting a criminal defendant, jury nullification as traditionally understood does not exist. In no other context is a …
