Health Care Access And Use Among Children & Adolescents With History Of Parental Incarceration — United States, 2019, Rohan Khazanchi, Nia Heard-Garris, Tyler N.A. Winkelman
Child Health Research Institute Pediatric Research Forum
Background: Children and adolescents exposed to parental incarceration (PI) have suboptimal health care access, utilization, and outcomes in adulthood. However, very little is known about health care access and use during childhood itself for children and adolescents exposed to PI.
Significance: The United States incarcerates more people and at a higher rate than any other country in the world, with stark spillover impacts on the lives of over 5 million children who have had an incarcerated parent.
Objective: Using the nationally representative 2019 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) Child Sample, we examined the relationship between PI and key measures …
Effects Of Victimization And Community Characteristics On Health Outcomes, Katie Meyer
Effects Of Victimization And Community Characteristics On Health Outcomes, Katie Meyer
Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Drawing on the neighborhood disorder model, the environmental stress model, and general strain theory, this study examined the effects of victimization experiences, anticipated victimization, and perceived community characteristics on overall physical health and mental health outcomes. This study used cross-sectional survey data from the 2014-2015 Nebraska Annual Social Indicator Survey (NASIS). Linear regression was used to examine how victimization experiences, worry about victimization, community context, and perceptions of crime and policing were associated with the health outcomes, controlling for demographic characteristics. The findings show that more worry about crime, less positive community perceptions, and less perceived police protection were associated …
Evaluation Of Oregon’S Food Waste Recovery And Reintegration Policy Adoption Through Civic Capacity, Jenna N. Stathopoulos
Evaluation Of Oregon’S Food Waste Recovery And Reintegration Policy Adoption Through Civic Capacity, Jenna N. Stathopoulos
Student Research Symposium
The US Food System is complex and multi-layered, containing many areas for improvement. My research focuses specifically on the issue area of food waste. On a global and national scale mitigating food waste can seem too large to manage. Containing complexity across multiple sectors and with extended timelines for improvements, it is indeed a wicked problem, a problem which in its complexity is almost impossible to fully distinguish or address with one (or even multiple) solutions. (Rittel, 1973). However, when we look to local, place-based solutions we can develop more realistic and actionable plans. The state of Oregon is equipped …
Replicable Federal Oer Grant Proposal Model, Amy Hofer, Phoebe Daurio
Replicable Federal Oer Grant Proposal Model, Amy Hofer, Phoebe Daurio
OER & Beyond - Blog Archive
The Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) Open Textbooks Pilot Program call for proposals in Fall 2020 included requirements that proposals expand the use of open textbooks in high-enrollment courses or in programs that lead to in-demand occupations, while addressing a gap in the existing open textbook marketplace. The proposals also had to demonstrate signi cance through replicability. Open Oregon Educational Resources is sharing parts of our grant proposal because we believe that our datadriven approach to identifying high-enrollment degree pathways that lead to in-demand occupations, with minimal OER currently available, is replicable for future grant writers seeking …
Confronting Stigma: Ethical Leadership, Influence, And The Dignity Of People Struggling With Addiction, Jacob Fennell
Confronting Stigma: Ethical Leadership, Influence, And The Dignity Of People Struggling With Addiction, Jacob Fennell
Honors Theses
People struggling with addiction in the United States of America deserve better treatment. The current stigma of people struggling with addiction as moral failures perpetuates a policy of drugs that sees them as criminal. This policy should be repealed and a better culture of care should be created. People struggling with addiction deserve a standard of treatment based on the core tenet of human dignity. In engaging with the history and cultural beliefs that are the foundation of this mistreatment, this same tenet of dignity must be upheld. This specifically comes into my project when exploring methods of changing these …

Defund The Police: Snappy Slogan Or A Viable Solution? A Case Study Of Savannah, Georgia, Michayla F. Knox
Honors College Theses
The notion of defunding the police remains a hot-button political topic since the protests of Summer 2020. The forefront of the debate concerns how defunding the police will impact crime rates. Still, the topic has scarcely been investigated empirically. This thesis provides an early examination into the relationship between "defunding the police", reallocating funding, and crime rates in Savannah, Ga. Several experiments are performed to answer three research questions that involve comparing and manipulating the budget provided for policing and the budgets for neighborhood vitality and poverty reduction. The findings show that Savannah allocates significantly more money to the policing …

The Oppressive Ranking System: Issues For Black Undergraduate Students & Hbcus, Lynn Oberkehr
Theses and Dissertations
This quantitative study aims to address two areas related to the current research on Black college student experiences and college rankings. First, data obtained from surveys distributed from the National Survey for Student Engagement (NSSE) will be analyzed in order to obtain information related to the engagement of Black undergraduate students on two specific college campuses, Kentucky State University, a historically black college or university (HBCU) and Rowan University, a predominantly white institution (PWI). Second, after this data is analyzed, it will be utilized to determine which of the two campuses provided their Black students with a more positive student …

Art Therapy With Juvenile Offenders-Building On Community, Strengths And Self-Esteem: A Literature Review, Rylee Donovan
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
The Juvenile Justice System differentiates itself from the adult criminal justice system by running on a rehabilitative model for youth offenders as opposed to a punishment and deterrence model. It is not uncommon that the youth placed in these facilities suffer from many mental health issues and have extensive trauma backgrounds leading to their delinquent behavior and crimes. Juvenile offenders are a population who are labeled as deviant and isolated from the world due to their behaviors often stemming from unhealed trauma. If left without care, these mental health concerns and unhealthy trauma responses may only perpetuate into their adult …

Meet And Run, Gia M. Binner
Theses and Dissertations
A defense for Gia Binner’s MFA Thesis, Meet and Run, argues that accessible art, known in this paper as commercial dance, is a meaningful vehicle for social change and that it has the ability to dismantle the outdated, European concert dance dominance by modeling the interdependency of both worlds.

Body-Worn Cameras (Bwc): The Sword And Shield For Defense Attorneys, Joseph Santoro
Theses
The use of body-worn camera (BWC) technology in the criminal justice system has brought with it new ways of handling cases and effecting interactions between police officers and citizens. BWC use in the criminal justice system begins when the cameras are turned on and depending on circumstances, the captured footage may become valuable evidence to then be entered into court for trials. Amongst the studies of BWC, two criminological theories have stood out the most. Deterrence theory and self-awareness, both provide explanation towards what kind of power and influence BWC has over officers, citizens, and court actors. The first is …

Lawrence University Honors Projects
The seeds of this project were sown in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 2017. Having recently graduated high school, I found myself in a studio apartment. I was enrolled at Harrisburg Area Community College and wanted to devote all my time to school so that I could transfer to a nice university. I had signed a lease and had to come up with rent each month. This resulted in an unfortunate reality: given that I was only a high school graduate, it was nearly impossible for me to command an hourly rate high enough to cover my expenses without working at least …

“Willfully Defiant: Understanding The Role Of Authority And Racialized Punitive Burdens”, Riley Mccoy
Honors Thesis
“Willful defiance” describes a type of student behavior that intentionally disrupts classroom order against a teacher’s direct commands. In 2013 the Los Angeles Unified Board of Education reduced the use of willful defiance suspensions as it was the disciplinary category with the largest racial disparities. Despite initial positive outcomes following the policy change, LA Unified still maintains a racial disparity in its expulsion rates and use of willful defiance. In this thesis, I investigate the remaining racialized outcomes through a structural analysis of behavioral discipline policies. Willful defiance policies represent a direct interaction between the structure of the classroom, student …

Btk: A Case Study In Psychopathy, Matthew S. Hutnyan
SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research
Psychopathy and serial murder have been topics of great public interest and media attention for several decades. Dennis Rader, a serial killer well-known by his pseudonym “BTK,” was responsible for the gruesome torture and murder of ten people between 1974 and 1991. Although some information is known about him through media accounts, little work has been done to synthesize information about his life and crimes, and to examine him as a case study of psychopathy. Through careful literature review and analysis, this study aims to provide insight into Rader’s life and crimes, and to delineate his psychopathology to gain a …
