America’S Race-Based Caste Structure: Its Impact In College And Professional Sports, Timothy Davis
America’S Race-Based Caste Structure: Its Impact In College And Professional Sports, Timothy Davis
Texas A&M Law Review
Racial inequities in college and professional sports remain prevalent and persistent despite the awareness of such inequities by those with the power to effectuate change. This Article proposes that explanations frequently offered for the slow pace of progress often fail to account for the hierarchy derived from a race-based caste system embedded in American society. Relying on the work of author Isabel Wilkerson, Part II describes major pillars of America’s race-based caste structure. Part III examines how stereotypes of Blacks’ presumed intellectual inferiority and a lack of fitness for leadership roles adversely impact their access to positions of power in …

Breaking The Cycle: An Analysis Of The Reduction Of Single Women In The Homeless Community, Luisa J. Lamagra
Breaking The Cycle: An Analysis Of The Reduction Of Single Women In The Homeless Community, Luisa J. Lamagra
Honors Projects
An analysis of homelessness with particular attention to King County and a focus on single women. This paper aims to address gender disparities in housing prioritization and homeless reduction solutions while suggesting gender-conscious policies and programs. The current system of housing prioritization is aiming to be neutral; yet it falls to the side of white, cisgender, heterosexual men. Single women without children have specific needs that are not met because the absence of children in their lives makes them insignificant, which feeds into the cyclical nature of chronic homelessness. By analyzing the specific pathways that women take into homelessness, this …
Improving Staff Education On Lung Cancer Screening At The Illinois Correctional Facilities For The Justice-Involved Individuals, Natalie Bethel, Jillian Youngquist
Improving Staff Education On Lung Cancer Screening At The Illinois Correctional Facilities For The Justice-Involved Individuals, Natalie Bethel, Jillian Youngquist
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Justice-involved individuals are at an increased risk of developing chronic health conditions, including lung cancer. Literature supports the practice of using an annual low-dose CT scan to screen for lung cancer. Illinois Correctional Facilities lacked a lung cancer screening protocol for justice-involved individuals. Lung cancer screening guidelines were approved for the facilities, however, the time frame for implementation was unclear. This DNP project focused on evidenced based guidelines for lung cancer screening with education tools for staff members to prepare them for implementation. Staff was presented with a pre-test, PowerPoint presentation, and a post-test to evaluate lung cancer screening knowledge. …
Investigation Into The Detection Of Drug Metabolites In Latent Fingerprints, Paige Oden
Investigation Into The Detection Of Drug Metabolites In Latent Fingerprints, Paige Oden
Honors Theses
Fingerprinting has proved a useful mode of identification for thousands of years. Following numerous technological advancements, it has become a technique for categorizing and keeping track of people over large geographical spaces for almost half of a century. Those living in the beginnings of fingerprinting used them as a form of signature as it was something completely unique to each individual that could not be replicated. Although they are no longer used as the primary form of signature, it certainly remains a biomarker of identity. Over the past century the practice has been heavily refined in order to identify people …

Marc Doggett was charged by indictment with conspiracy to import and distribute cocaine. He called and made an appointment a few days after he had been arrested in Reston, Virginia. The case itself was in Jacksonville, Florida, so he came to Jacksonville and hired us. I'm not altogether clear how Mr. Doggett found me, but the minute I met him, I knew what his avenue of escape from the clutches of the United States might be. I recall meeting with Marc in the conference room in the afternoon and, during the course of our conversation, I had the folks in …
Early Jail And Prison Conditions Litigation In The Middle District Court, William J. Sheppard
Early Jail And Prison Conditions Litigation In The Middle District Court, William J. Sheppard
Florida Historical Quarterly
Today, jails and prisons throughout the Middle District of Florida (Middle District) are hardly places a person would want to spend the night. However, those currently incarcerated in the Middle District have had many rights secured for them which did not exist prior to the existence of that Court. The story of prison reform in the Middle District illustrates the power hardworking, courageous pro se plaintiffs, attorneys, and judges can wield to ensure all inmates receive the constitutional liberties and protections to which they are entitled.

Extreme Circumstances Call For Extreme Measures: How United States V. Lyons' Radical Remedies Corrected A Grave Injustice, Samuel W. Wardle
Florida Historical Quarterly
Over the course of a decade, Antonino "Nino" Lyons appeared before the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida at least four times. In 2001, a jury convicted Lyons of crimes carrying a mandatory minimum sentence oflife in federal prison. In 2003, the Honorable Gregory Presnell ordered Lyons to be released on bail, only to be reversed by the Eleventh Circuit. A year later, in 2004, Judge Presnell again ordered Lyons' release, and this time, there was no appeal. Finally, in 2010, Judge Presnell took the extraordinary step of granting Lyons' petition for a certification of actual …

A Pioneer In Prison Reform: Costello V. Wainright And Its Paradoxical Legacy In Florida Prisons, Mariko K. Shitama
Florida Historical Quarterly
In 1972, prisoners Michael V Costello and Robert K Celestino filed separate pro se complaints in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida alleging overcrowded conditions and inadequate health care in Florida prisons. These claims were consolidated, amended by court-appointed counsel, and authorized by Senior United States District Judge Charles Ray Scott as a class action for declaratory and injunctive relief on behalf of all present and future Florida Department of Corrections (DOC) inmates. In their amended complaint, the plaintiffs alleged that the overcrowding and inadequate medical care in Florida prisons constituted cruel and unusual punishment …
Creating The United States District Court For The Middle District Of Florida, James M. Denham
Creating The United States District Court For The Middle District Of Florida, James M. Denham
Florida Historical Quarterly
The creation of the Middle District was tied up in fundamental changes that, in the mid-1950s, were working social, cultural, political, and all manner of other revolutions in the Sunshine State. The Middle District was carved out of the Southern District of Florida, a huge district that spanned the entire peninsula from the Georgia border to the Florida Keys. The new district resembled a cross ways slash of territory running from the Georgia border as far south as Brevard County before it swung west and south all the way down the peninsula to the southern boundary of Lee County. After …
A Liberated Journalist And Yankee Women On The Florida Frontier, John T. Foster, Jr
A Liberated Journalist And Yankee Women On The Florida Frontier, John T. Foster, Jr
Florida Historical Quarterly
Journalist Ellen Augusta Hill wrote an unusual newspaper column for two years in the 1880s- one that contains both her own extraordinary ideas and many of those of her rural readers. By tracing the journalist's effort and the response it helped to generate, a picture emerges of women who have received little attention in Florida history. Neither Hill nor her followers were native-born Floridians, or even Southerners. They were Yankee women who came from New York and, perhaps surprisingly, from both Ohio and Illinois. The topics covered by Hill and the dialogue engendered departed from earlier journalistic activities in Florida. …
Correlates Of Intimate Partner Cyber-Harassment Among Mexican American College Students, Erica M. Benavides-Moore
Correlates Of Intimate Partner Cyber-Harassment Among Mexican American College Students, Erica M. Benavides-Moore
Theses and Dissertations
The social issue of intimate partner cyber-harassment among Mexican American college students continues to affect dating violence. While there is a considerable amount of literature focusing on various forms of criminal behavior in cyberspace, such as cyberbullying, cyber-pornography, hacking, online fraud and identity theft, less attention has been paid to violence facilitated through cyber-communications and digital/electronic means such as CH. This thesis examines Mexican American college students to identify which factors correlate to cyber harassment (CH) offending and which correspond to cyber victimization. In this context, intimate partner cyber harassment (IPCH) is defined as a pattern of repeated behaviors by …

Marsy’S Law In Georgia: Are Domestic Violence Victims Actually Being Protected By The Law?, Victoria Hannes
Honors College Theses
Marsy's Law, or the Victims Bill of Rights legislation, was first passed in California in 2008 and has been adopted by 13 states. In 2019, Georgia was added to the list of states that adopted the policy. While an important step for the victims' rights movement, little is known about how Marsy's Law impacts the landscape of victims’ rights at the local level. Therefore, the current study endeavored to explore how Marsy's Law is shaping the landscape of victims’ rights for domestic violence victims in Coastal Georgia. Guided by the zero-sum conceptualization of victims' rights, the study investigated the law's …

Gang Culture And Their Territorial Space: Graffiti Analysis Using Geographical Information Systems (Gis), Christian F. Delgado
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to understand gang culture and how gangs come to define their territorial space. This thesis will focus on identifying gang spaces by utilizing geographic techniques to aid in determining where high gang activity and/or crime is taking place. This will be done by point pattern, data analysis, visualization analysis, and heat mapping on complaints, arrest, shooting, and graffiti data. This research has been conducted deductively, as it will use the theories mentioned in the literature review to define hypotheses.
Gangs are known for their violent and disruptive behavior. They ravage community resources and introduce …

Spiral Of Silence And The Use Of Social Media By Sexual Violence Survivors, Tanvi Thakur
Theses
Sexual violence has been a global health concern for over decades, but activism on social media such as #MeToo has increased public discourse and awareness about this issue. In its early advent, the #MeToo movement raised ample awareness, stimulated free discourse, and placed this issue as an important concern to address. While countries have implemented austere laws to prevent such hate crimes against women, societal norms and codes have deemed this type of violence as stigma or taboo resulting in the underreporting of the majority of sexual violence-related crimes. The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey conducted in 2015 …
